Vinyl Storage Solutions - More Resleeves / Dual Pocket Gatefold Demo

  • This is the third video I've done concerning a resleeving project using Vinyl Storage Solutions Dual Pocket Sleeves. In this one I take you through a couple of new boxes of titles I've decided to redo in the Vinyl Storage Solutions sleeves, and show you a more detailed demonstration of how I use two sleeves to do the dual pocket gatefold.
    Vinyl Storage Solutions inner and outer sleeves are the best solution I've come across to fully protect your valuable record collection. Although they make a variety of different configurations, my favorite and the only one I'm employing are the unique dual pocket sleeve with resealable flap. I also use the 3mil inner sleeves to completely protect my records.
    The demo is here to clarify how I do the dual pocket gatefold. Here I show how the paper trimmer is used to get a perfect relief cut. This is not the only way to do a gatefold - many tape the inside flap across the inner fold. I find everything sits better with the flap removed.
    Also if you are concerned about the unused white strip on the inside, a viewer has said he avoids this by using the tape on flap version rather than tape on body. Makes sense if this aspect bothers you visually.

    Yo yo Mr Pressing Matters.
    Looky what subject we have here…
    As you know, VSS is the way to go! For various reasons. When joining the dual pockets for a gatefold, cutting the inner flap provides a gap or relief on the inner portion so as to not have any bunching of material. Just like any 1 piece gatefold sleeve on the market that you would buy would have that relief gap… and for a good reason.
    This is the way…

    • @AndrewBell
      @AndrewBell Před 7 měsíci +1

      @@ThePressingMatters That makes sense. I actually think a CD player is an unnecessary expense since you don't actually need one to get the best out of your CDs. If you use any cheap external disc drive and connect it via USB to your Mac, you can copy a CD as lossless files on Apple Music. If you play those ripped files through your speakers, they actually sound better than playing the CD in a CD player. This also avoids any "CD jitter" that often occurs with CD playback.

    VSS also sells a 12” dual pocket sleeve with the tape on the flap. When making the cut and removing the flap with the tape you now have no white tape strip on the inside. This is how I have done all of my gatefold covers.

    Ok I finally bought the cutter. I now have quite a bit of surgery to perform on my collection. I’d wondered why the VSS sleeves got “cockeyed” when there were several conservative ones on a shelf. I saw your video a few months backed and bookmarked it knowing I need to review it. Only about 18 months of sleeves to address😜.

    • @ThePressingMatters
      @ThePressingMatters  Před 2 měsíci +1

      Ok great, so to clarify, you've done your collection in dual pocket sleeves and you did the gatefolds with two, but without a cut? And you want to go back and make the cut?
      I'd try the method on a few new, unsleeved gatefolds first.
      One thing you've got to be very careful with is the cut. You want to be close to the pocket but avoid cutting into it. You need to be sure you're cutting just the flap. Good lighting will help you see that the fold of the pocket is safely under the guard. I've sliced a few too close and ruined them so be very careful.
      Going back to redo seems a big task, but it can be done I think. The problem is exposing the tape. It could pick up dirt or dust if you are not careful.

    • @JeffersonDD
      @JeffersonDD Před 2 měsíci +1

      @@ThePressingMattersyeah I’m thinking now it might be better to address this going forward. TBH, I almost think the way I do my inner gatefolds is fine, but that I should trim the excess on the outer sleeve. My issue is that after say 20 or so on the shelf the records end up being less than perpendicular because of the cumulative effect of the extra plastic on the outside. Oh the first world problems!!

    • @ThePressingMatters
      @ThePressingMatters  Před 2 měsíci +1

      @@JeffersonDD I'm not sure im understanding the visual, so on the inside of the gatefold, have you crossed the flap and adhered it to the tape strip on the left side. Or did you just leave it draped across?

    • @ThePressingMatters
      @ThePressingMatters  Před 2 měsíci +1

      @@JeffersonDD The only thing for me is in smaller gatefolds you do end up with a bit more plastic on the right side of the closed gatefold. I wish they had a sleeve designed for what we're doing, a bit shorter, to get a custom fit.
      I would just move forward for now and if you love the result of the new, cut gatefolds then maybe go back and either cut the existing right hand sleeve and put it back, or replace the right hand (back) sleeve with a new one. Maybe you could reuse the existing one on a single pocket jacket.

    • @ThePressingMatters
      @ThePressingMatters  Před 7 měsíci +1

      Do you mean when using two to cover a gatefold? I find it closes more cleanly without the bunching of having the extra flap crossing the center of the gatefold. It's just more appealing to me as nothing shifts or bunches when opening and closing. Until you see the difference it's hard to understand how much better it is. In my opinion of course. Many people leave it on and free or even tape the inside together. Do you tape the inner gatefold pieces together?

    • @michaellord9745
      @michaellord9745 Před 7 měsíci +1

      I was curious about that also. I leave the flaps intact (no cutting) and utilize the inner tape seal as well. One reason is because I don't like the look of that white strip (covering the sticky part) although I can see an advantage of doing it your way since it does create an additional pocket. For your oversized jackets with two LPs I utilize the VSS OS4DFG12CPP (12" standard gatefolds) or the OS4DFG12.75CPP (12.75" larger gatefolds). These styles have dual tuckable flaps on both ends of the gatefold sleeve (which is in one piece) that allows you to utilize the jacket pockets, which is how I use them, and saves on valuable storage space. You can also store the LPs in between the sleeve and the jacket in you prefer. I use these outer sleeves for A.P. and Mo-Fi double LP over-sized jacket releases, and any other over-sized jacket with two LPs. Very nice!@@ThePressingMatters

    • @ThePressingMatters
      @ThePressingMatters  Před 7 měsíci

      I think either way works, this is just how I was shown to do it. I found there was some movement doing it with the flap and seal that doesn't occur with the relief cut. As you probably know, their own one piece gatefold is designed with a relief cut as well, so there is something to it. I know some don't like the white strip that's left doing it this way, but I kind of like it. It doesn't bother me personally.
      Either way you do it, this is a great product and my collection has never looked better!

    Interesting procedure
    I do not uderstand why people put condoms on their records that cover each part of the cover. I like them loose.
    I use a thick outer clear sleeve, drop the artwork and records behind the cover and can get to all of them, pull everyyhing out and touch everything intimately. Avoid cramming records in a cover when you can. I buy in big bulk from QRP (2 grades) and Sleeve City for larger outers.
    Vinyl needs to breath so avoid those flap over sticky seal versions. I have 40 year old records where the old audiophile discwasher inner sleeve is still pristine.
    Wait for the Who’s Next UHQR.
    Good luck with your recovery

      @ThePressingMatters  Před 7 měsíci

      Hi, thanks for your reply! I'm recovering well, and should be back to my normal routine in a few days.
      I didn't say it, but I'm definitely going to wait out Who's Next until the UHQR.
      Regarding the sleeves, I felt exactly the same when I saw this more and more. If fact, I remember back in the day seeing some collectors keeping records behind the jacket in an outer sleeve. The idea of a record outside of its jacket for storage seemed so odd to me. Then I realized the benefits to the protection of the jacket and ease of access and understood why they did that. I still never did it, only for the more fragile jackets. Then I started to notice keeping records in jackets really did affect the integrity of the jacket over time. I had tried resealable Japanese sleeves before, and liked how they looked but hated ripping in and out of them and catching the tape. So I went to thick 5 mil outers for my whole collection and left it at that. A friend showed me these and I tried a few. I still thought it was overkill but lived with it a bit and realized it was a really nice solution for me. Jacket protection is perfect, clarity excellent, still have access to enjoy the jacket, and record handy without putting wear in the jacket, and the clear spines with no seam look excellent on the shelf. The only thing missing is the tactile touch of handling the covers, I agree. To me the trade off is worth it, but I can see how some might say it is over the top OCD 😊

      Than you Tony,
      Recovery is going good, thanks. That Hendrix record is a treasure. Last time I auditioned my copies I really fell for the mono. Great jacket and pressing too.
      I can understand passing on The Lamb. It's not my top Genesis record, and the idea of four 45s seems daunting. I even auditioned it recently to refresh my thoughts on it, particularly Side Four which I always had reservations about. On that audition (just streaming) it was not really pushing me to pull the trigger. A few nights later I played the Classic 33 on my main system and got swept right up into it. After the stunning success of Selling England on 45, I decided to go for it. If the improvement is anything like that, I expect total immersion and a new appreciation for this album.
