Better Call Saul is the prequel to the award-winning series Breaking Bad, set six years before Saul Goodman (Bob Odenkirk) became Walter White's lawyer. When we meet him, the man who will become Saul Goodman is known as Jimmy McGill, a small-time lawyer searching for his destiny, and, more immediately, hustling to make ends meet. Working alongside, and often against, Jimmy is "fixer" Mike Erhmantraut (Jonathan Banks), a beloved character introduced in Breaking Bad. The series will track Jimmy's transformation into Saul Goodman, the man who puts "criminal" in "criminal lawyer."

Well yea because he was a sniper in Nam.
@Minerales en rebaja I don’t think it’s needs to be confirmed, the scene where he first meets with Lawson the gun dealer strongly implies if not outright says Mike is a Marine and Vietnam veteran
@Minerales en rebaja it was confirmed in behind the scenes of the episode Mike gets killed. Jonathan Banks literally says it word for word.
@@Wolf-wc1js it literally was confirmed though. Jonathan Banks says it himself.
Yeah, it's obviously implied he was a military veteran deeply involved with the Marine Corp. during the Vietnam conflict (either a jarhead himself or other military service specialist who embedded with them).

This is one of the only shows that accurately portrays how bullets tear through cars and provide zero cover.
depends on which caliber used and the position of the gun mens important
Not zero - the engine block and tires provide some. Plus, being behind a car gives you concealmenr.
I wouldn't say zero cover. A lot of the lethal shots shown were through windows. I'm pretty sure it wouldn't make it far going through the metal body. You may still get hit but it would be with significantly less energy.
Not to mention that to mention that the bullets are likely will tumble as they go through the car, quite possibly turning an otherwise hit into a miss.

@Azazel no lol. Almost every movie with snipers without fail ignore it and make the sound come at the same time as the bullet. I've even seen films put the sound BEFORE the bullet impact.
@@nekajuii true but it depends on the point of perspective of where the scene is. If the scene is from the point of view of the sniper, the sound is immediate. If the scene is from the guy getting shot, the bullet will hit before the sound travels there.

My favourite one is Inflatable, just because of the scene of where he tries to leave Cliff/Main with his bonus by being an "overall jackass" as wise Cliff said
While I do agree somewhat, the way in which BCS distinguishes itself as a GOAT show, is its cinematography.
@@quintvermeulen703 Oh, sure. Definitely.
I think Chicanery is the best one personally, but Bagman is definitely up there.
The only scene I've witnessed where the sound delay on the rifle rounds have been taken into account. Marvellous.

Violence and action only ACCOMPANY the actual story and have no purpous by themselves.
They only appear after the story builds up tension and mark a tipping point after which characters and stances PERMANENTLY change.

Can you imagine if we didn't see Mike at all in Better Call Saul, and this was his first scene?
That would have been absolutely epic
Thinking about it now, they could have potentially done this in that way, maybe have this kinda scene earlier in the show and have mike come a bit later
It wouldn't have had remotely the same impact on a character level. It might be a fun one off shock value thing but it has so much more weight now that these two have an actual relationship. Jimmy knows that Mike is not someone you mess with. Now he truly understands just how deadly this old man he started off butting heads over stickers with truly is.
No, I like stickers :D
That's what a cheap show would do
Its hard to believe such a slow buildup of a show based on law practice can make such an action filled moment so much more meaningful and suspenseful.
My favorite parts of this scene. The man with the mouth tried to use his mouth against those that speak another language, his powers are useless here and maybe he needed to know his own toolkit for the future. Another thing is how empathetic Mike is towards his shock. Mike knows you don't become as hardened as him without going through those first moments of shock the first few times which makes me think either he felt the way at one point or he cares about Saul in a way that he cared about another almost, maybe his son, if Mike can't protect his son maybe doing what he does for others makes him feel less useless. Either way Mike didn't need to save Saul he choose to.
It’s so funny you mention that his powers were useless in this situation because he didn’t know Spanish, all he said was lawyer and friend of the cartel. In Breaking Bad when Jesse and Walt take Goodman to the hole in the desert, he speaks a little more Spanish than this time, showing he’s brushed up a little bit to strengthen his footing with a language barrier. Granted, I don’t think he says much more, I just remember his use of siempre
@@biohazardsoldierPMK very true he was much more prepared to defend himself in Spanish the 2nd time
@@biohazardsoldierPMK True. The second time he says that he has always been a friend of the cartel and asks if Lalo send them. However he is still in a bit of a panic because he never became as hardened as Mike.

It's interesting how they dropped the machine gun's volume down drastically at 3:02, as if that'd be Saul's perspective of someone who's experiencing a state of shock, numbing out the stressor. Brilliant filmmaking.
That’s not a machine gun, that’s an automatic rifle.
Machine guns are typically belt-fed
Edit: Correction, rifles are typically lower rate of fire than a machine gun
@ALJ9000 A: That's not true. A machine gun doesn't NEED to be belt fed to be a machine gun and B: even if it was technically true (which it's not), it would be the dumbest level of pedantry on the planet.
@@ALJ9000 the RPK would like a word with you
Bob odenkirk is such a great actor, even in a scene like this where he is just meant to act scared it comes off as really genuine, he looks terrified and i feel so bad for him just by looking.
apparently he refused to wear earplugs during this scene because he wanted to be able to react to the gunfire more realistically
I read that Vince Gilligan actually got Bob Odenkirk and Jonathan Banks in trouble with a real cartel, so here they actually are in a gunfight. This shows how dedicated Vince is to capturing the dangers of the drug trade.
@@scottvelez3154 Bravo vince!
This episode has the best cinematography in both shows. It looks amazing on every level.
I think the episode “crawl space” from BB had slightly better cinematography but this is very close as well
Now I know why saul was so nonchalant when walter and jesse kidnapped him. He was yelling, but he was still saul (cracking jokes), in this scene he was completely jimmy.
that and he knew he could probably talk himself out of the situation, unless it’s cartel or lalo related
good news, the latest episode gives his perspective and proves this theory
I always come back to this not only because of the great scene but also since I love the color palette, (the blue sky and desert colors and then jimmy's bright clothes and his yellow car, which kinda shows how jimmy doesn't fit there) it's so nice to look at despite what's happening
I swear nobody mentions the sky in breaking bad and better call Saul it has always felt like a trademark
The color scheme overall is awesome in BCS. It's got like a Grand Theft Auto vibe
An underappreciated element of Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul is their meticulous, gorgeous cinematography. Throughout all the hideous depravities and human tragedies, I don't think there's a single _shot_ in the entire setting that is dull or unpleasant to look at.
I have never felt relief more intense than when I heard Mike's voice. When he's there things just always somehow work out
I love the choreography of this firefight. You see them just randomly dumping rounds downrange without selecting targets because they have absolutely no idea where the shots are coming from. They have a vague idea of the direction, but that's all. Even if they did know precisely where he was, it'd be trying to thread a needle in a tornado with their optics. Best they could do would be getting the rounds close enough that Mike is forced into cover and they can drive away.
Mike, however, has a vantage point and cover+concealment. They could empty every round they have and never even come close to being a threat to him. He can simply take his time and eliminate each one.
They were overconfident, where Mike had a plan & experience.

I LOVE the attention to detail. Jimmy's shirt is sprayed with blood from the shot, then a second and a half later, a distant crack is heard from Mike's rifle. Brilliant.
It actually really bums me out that after all they went through in Bagman, Saul barely batted an eye when he found out Walter killed Mike.
It does seem pretty heartless, but to be fair by that time their relationship had deteriorated to the point Mike didn't hesitate to threaten Saul on Gus' behalf.
Not to mention Walter at that point had poisoned a child, killed a cartel boss, and made it clear he wasn't going to stand any more backtalk from Saul.
its not after, its before, stop acting like they have already written this episode 10 years before it aired not everything is intentional
Nice little detail but you can hear the bullet "swoosh" by and the sound comes a second later just like it would in a real long distance shot.
Easily one of the tensest moments in the show. Odenkirk's performance here is outstanding, I really felt for him this entire scene.
We all knew Jimmy wasn't gonna die. Still the creators built so much tension, its unbelievable!!

Yeah, flight fight response. One time a car drove by and someone yelled out the window. I thought it was me and I bolted like Scooby doo
Growing up in EPTX at this time, I am impressed at how BCS even made sure that Chihuahua plates were accurate to the era this was set in of 2004.
The yellow strip plates are what I would see on "regular" cars back then, coming in from Ciudad de Juarez. Rich people driving newer cars had a different plate, like seen on the twins' Cayenne Turbo. Crazy how time accurate this is.
Although i knew he will survive this, cause he is in breaking bad, i still was so damn worried about Saul in this Scene. So well done
the end of this scene was amazing. he was about to break down. that is one of those moments when you're a different person for the rest of your life- it's when you realize how small you are in the grand scheme of things.
This scene is the only time Mike ever sympathizes with Saul.

I absolutely love the tires going out on the vehicles one by one as Jimmy looks around frantically. From his perspective, even if he DOES survive this, he's getting indicator after indicator that there's no escaping whoever is doing this. Brilliant filmmaking showing them going out in the background as he crawls around in the foreground.
He deliberately shot out the tires to lower the cover, exposing a clean headshot.
That first shot where he feels the blood before hearing the shot is an epic part of this whole scene
2:41 Love how the bullet hole lines up with the car, really cool shot.
Literally a cool “shot”…
what really helps make this great.... other episodes as well..... is the BRILLIANT camera work and visual editing..... a work of cinematic art!

4:11 "Come with me if you want to live"
When the cartel started shooting I bet mike was thinking “That’s cute, do you even know where I’m at or are you just shooting blindly?”
That’s the difference between men that do the homework on their surroundings and those that do not.
