Better Call Saul is the prequel to the award-winning series Breaking Bad, set six years before Saul Goodman (Bob Odenkirk) became Walter White's lawyer. When we meet him, the man who will become Saul Goodman is known as Jimmy McGill, a small-time lawyer searching for his destiny, and, more immediately, hustling to make ends meet. Working alongside, and often against, Jimmy is "fixer" Mike Erhmantraut (Jonathan Banks), a beloved character introduced in Breaking Bad. The series will track Jimmy's transformation into Saul Goodman, the man who puts "criminal" in "criminal lawyer."

When Kim called him out as the parking attendant, he had a PTSD flashback of Jimmy harassing him over stickers
Simpler times . . . .
It would have been funny had the writers made Kim 'GO OFF' like, "so, YOU'RE the one who gave Jimmy SO MUCH TROUBLE with those parking stickers! Let's _STEP OUTSIDE."_
"You're like a troll under a bridge, yOu mUst hAvE tHe sTicKers or you wont PASS" PTSD
Troll alert here, don’t feed it
😂
"I think you're made of sterner stuff."
Man, that's _extremely_ high praise coming from Mike.
It's like being Knighted
Is it though? Let's not forget just how cowardly and scared Saul/jimmy was back in the desert. I'm still amazed we did not see him with a brown stain on the seat of his pants back then...
Especially after the desert thing
Well, he was pretty dehydrated.
Dude watched her talk back to Lalo. I'd say it's justified
When Kim remembered Mike was the parking attendant she couldn’t believe someone seemingly so insignificant played a major role in the criminal underworld lol that shattered her sense of the world
If it were me, I’d lose half my brain cells just to try and wrap my head around it 😂
if a parking attendant can be major player then that means any one can be, bet she nice to all the insignificant people she comes across now

i mean, that whole dissing howard thing she's got going on with jimmy is weird, but that's not random people on the street.
she was definitely shocked though.
but then again this is a fictional character in a drama series and maybe i'm reading too much into it.
To me it felt more "we were" or "i was" moment for Kim.
They were something pretty normal and casual before with normal jobs and normal lives. Now they are something different. They are in the game and there is no going back.
Kim’s realisation that this man used to be the parking lot attendant of the court would have been the final straw of sanity for me here
you can see her let out this sort of nervous laugh as Mike leaves - I think this moment did have a big impact on Kim - but I'm still not sure where her final arc in this season is going to go at all
She gonna leave Saul for Huell
I’m trying to imagine if a guy who worked as a parking attendant at my job 5 years ago met up with me again, only now he’s a hitman who saved my spouse from a cartel. I would question every interaction with anyone from that point on.
I think what she realizes is how far behind the curve she must be.
@@JimBob-gv3ry little did we know she saved huell from the safe house after breaking bad.
I love that Mike treats Kim with so much more respect than Jimmy, probably because of the way she handled the Lalo confrontation last season

I love Jonathan Banks' performance here. He looks more frail and disarming than usual. Even his spoken voice sounds huskier and lower. It's like Mike is trying to make himself look less threatening to not scare Kim.
also cuz he knows that kim is much more vulnerable than jimmy in that she is more or less accidentally in the game as opposed to a willing participant like jimmy

And beautifully acted.
Kim recognizing him working in the parking lot has more significance for Mike's character arc than peoole think. Kim reminding him that he started in such an innocent job, made him realize how far he's gone. How despite trying to run from it, he's now neck deep in evil.
He said he was the parking attendant, but also means he was that man and he can never be him again.
Or it could mean that he could had been an undercover mob since season 1 and she never knew

An EPIC meeting that took so long to reveal. It was worth the wait. Her guess that he was the guy out in the desert was a nice touch. Even nicer was remembering him as the parking attendant. I love this show.

Lol he literally was a parking attendant, reading waay too much into it lmao
@@gamerjamson Yes, he literally was, which is why it makes sense in-universe. But the writers of this show like slipping in poetic meaning into banal lines. It struck me immediately, I'm sorry it didn't strike you.

For sure, HAHA
That's how he knew she's made of sterner stuff.
Also when you see people in completely different contexts then you'd normally see them and dressed differently its hard to recognize them. All Kim ever saw of Mike was him in his little booth and probably didn't even bother to remember his name.

The “sterner stuff” comment confused me for a moment before I remembered that Mike heard Kim dress down Lalo. No wonder he thinks she can take it better
It's also a reference to Shakespeare's Julius Caesar.
Well everyone knows Saul is a little paranoid and cowardly when it comes to danger so I think it's more him knowing Saul is cowardly then Kim being tough

2:17 I love how at the end of the "I'll answer anything I can" line Mike delivers that tingling in the voice that he uses to show empathy for the person he's talking with, like when he talked about avenging his son or before murdering Ziegler. Such an incredible delivery by Jonathan Banks.
I hate how people say all Banks does is have a serious face. Aside from the "I broke my boy speech" he ALWAYS has a different way of talking and looking at different people, depending if they are good, bad, criminals or civilians.
No wonder Mike thinks she's sterner. Her confrontation with Lalo says it all 💪🏻🔥

To be fair that was an accurate statement at the time. It seems like Lalo only approached them because he was backed into a corner.
Since that meeting, Kim’s had time to consider what she’d do or say if Lalo ever reappeared. I wonder if she came up with a game plan. She knows people attacked Jimmy, that Mike saved him, that Mike is hostile to Lalo, yet Mike made sure Lalo got free on bail. From this, she could infer that a 3rd party wanted Lalo to stay in jail.

I think the series ends with Jimmy getting caught and confesses to all the crimes he committed including the ones he did with Kim against Howard. This will result in Kim getting released, and Jimmy goes to jail for the rest of his life but is satisfied knowing that he made one final sacrifice for Kim and doesn’t have to live in fear of being caught anymore.

Imagine finding out that the local parking attendant saved your husband's life by sniping 5 guys and is now hunting a cartel leader. Kim was probably so shook after this conversation lol I'd think I was tripping
Look at her hand gesture as Mike walks out the door.
She's already on the edge of a breakdown on screen.
Kim's right hand opening up with the universal signal for "Bro what" after Mike says "I am" never stops being funny
Funny you caught that because the camera purposely puts it out of focus.
I was, not "I am"
3:29 I love Jonathan Banks' delivery of "I was" there. Mike left Philly and that part of his life behind, moved across the country to ABQ hoping to find peace, yet somehow he found himself entangled in the criminal underground once again. Full of defeat and burnout, the last thing that kept this man going was the well being of his family.
He asked for that life coz thats all he could do.
The same way Jada found herself... entangled? 😂
In hindsight, this really was a Chekhov's gun moment. You don't setup the idea of Lalo reappearing in Kim's life, unless you want it to pay off and actually happen.
The twist was, Mike wasn't there to protect them when the moment finally came, unlike the sense of omnipresent security he exudes during this scene.
It's kind of wild that a show's second and third most important characters can wait 5 and a half seasons before interacting. Made this scene all the more epic.
Gus and Saul went a combined 11 seasons and never met.
@@britaneejustinmosley1900 Saul and Gus actually interacted once in Season 3 of BCS when Mike asked the former to eat at Los Pollos and spy on Victor. Gus approached him with his restaurant owner persona there. So Saul has met Gus even though he never found out what a big deal the man is.

3:06 “You and your husband... go on living your lives”
The way he said that, even though he said he didn’t care what Kim and Jimmy were doing, I wonder if Mike actually was repulsed by what they were trying to do to Howard, even though he may not have all the details of their plan.
tbh just from looking at where they go and what they do he is probably just trying to figure out what their goal is. It's a pretty complicated plan with a lot of moving parts, I'm not sure you'd be able to understand what the plan was just from surveillance
he doesn't know about them going after Howard or Howard.
@@parknplay8328 You can….if you’re Mike
Personally, I think his tone of voice is somewhere between depression and envy. Mike's job is gritty and grim, a life filled with a gangster's errands that constantly has him looking over his shoulder for either the police, or the warring factions of the underworld he's sunk back into. But, he's also mourning Nacho here, the young man who got himself into a mess he didn't understand, like his son. I think up until that moment, he was managing the gangster's life well, but the final, "I was" shows the regret.
Contrast that with Jimmy and Kim's life - lovers with somewhat cushy careers, running what Mike at this point would call a "game" on the side before he finds out the scope of their meddling mess. In a way, I think Mike would swap his position with hers in a heartbeat at this moment.
He just sounded exhausted, dragging himself along the road he's chose because there's nothing more for him to do.
The moment at 2:35 when Mike says, “Because you are made of sterner stuff” and the reaction of Kim towards this statement is simply excellent acting. She had been pushing and facing so much difficulties and without any recognition, especially from Jimmy. Then, when a supposedly nobody (Mike) recognises her mettle, it breaks her. You can see it in the way she takes in an instant gulp of breath and through her eyes.
It's also her mentally running through both her memories of Lalo, and a short inventory of her understanding of Jimmy, especially when it's coming from someone who seems to know him quite well.
*_"I was"_*
You can hear the exhaustion in Mike's voice, almost yearning for a much simpler time.
I love the way he says "I was", and how it sounds with the music in the background. There's something sombre about it.
kim is like the friend that's not gangsta, but tries it out and ends up being more gangsta.
The altercation with Lalo was like her doing premium drugs. she's chasing that high now.

This is a very silly comparison but it’s like will Ferrell in the get hard movie. The whitest dude possible ends up being more gangsta than anyone in the movie
kim had the makings of a varsity gangster at that moment.
2:55 THIS IS KIM'S UNDOING RIGHT HERE! She will let her guard down and mistake Mike's men for Howard's PI or APD
You’re on to something for sure
i said the same thing!!!!!!
Great point
I thought of APD, but Howard could ruin her also if he gets evidence of her nefarious behavior plotting with Jimmy
Yeah. What I’m also wondering is if Mike’s men mistakenly identify Howard’s PI as someone working for Lalo.
Or they assume Howard’s working for Lalo and hired the PI, potentially leading to a Gus/Howard confrontation in a desert some place
Doubt it. Kim notices EVERYTHING, including the cars driven and appearances of those following her.
Mike: because i think you’re made of Werner stuff
Kim: what
Mike: *what*
"You said you were watching us! WHERE WERE YOU HUH?!"
Mike says "I was" with a slight hint of regret.
Man I love how actions and consequences are written in this show. Mike presence during Lalo's confrontation with Jimmy and Kim, Jimmy coming to Mike's house for information on Lalo it lead to this moment where Mike think Kim can handle this information better than Jimmy. Great
You did not just do that. You did not just pull the "actions and consequences" line from a show that Jonathan Banks was in and nobody even knows what you just referred to. More accurately its "decisions and consequences".
Mike telling Kim he believes she's made of sterner stuff is the ultimate compliment.
Just a regular meeting between a lawyer and an attendant
I absolutely love this scene. Jonathan Banks's delivery is impeccable.
One of the best meeting scenes in the history of the show. Others being Mike meets Héctor Salamanca, Mike meets Gustavo Fring and Jimmy's first encounter with Tuco Salamanca.
_Anyone's_ first meeting with Mike - or, _especially_ with TUCO - would be the best meeting scenes of a show!
I love Tuco.
I love it when Jimmy first meets Lalo and Mike meets Chuck.
"I was"
My God, what a fantastic way to close the scene. Mike 's able to see for a second how far he got down the criminal world and he forever lost the chances of having his normal life back
One detail i missed and i liked in this scene is if you look at Kim's hand after Mike said "I was", she holds it out like she was expecting an answer, but didn't get one. She honestly can't believe what she's seeing.
someone else on here called it the "bruh what" reflex and I think any one of us would have a very similar reaction, along with the humorless breathless chuckle she lets out as she does it. Just trying her best to grapple with the absurdity of the reality.

Mike was wrong about Kim. She may have been made of "sterner stuff," but she was also secretive and had an outsize belief in her ability to handle any situation by herself. If he had told Jimmy, Howard would probably still be alive.
Mike underestimated Gus and underestimated Lalo. He overestimated Kim.
@@Black.Sabbath wait how exactly did he underestimate gus?
@@epicfan1598My guess to OP’s answer is that Gus didn’t come by as an evil drug lord the same way the Salamanca’s did and took the job as the right hand man. By the time he realized Gus meant serious business it was too late.
Looking at this scene in hindsight, Mike made a huge mistake, the same mistake that everyone else did (including us) by trusting in Kimmy more than Jimmy.
He thought that Kimmy is braver and will handle the Lalo situation better than Jimmy (because he heard about what happened when Lalo visited their apartment for the first time) while Jimmy is an emotional trainwreck coward who won’t handle the cartel things really well (because of their experience in the desert) when in reality, things turned out to be the opposite. Kimmy was so caught up with the con against Howard so much that she took ZERO precautions to Lalo’s return and she chose not to tell Jimmy about this because not only Jimmy will freak out, but Jimmy will also stop the con on Howard and put saving themselves from Lalo as first priority. Kimmy didn’t want any of that. She wanted the con to come to fruition and now we all know what happened. Now we all know that the consequences escalated big time.
Mike’s distrust on Jimmy will also be his biggest mistake in the future, because not trusting Jimmy causing Mike to hire someone else to take care of his money. With a little threat from the DEA, that lawyer ended up ratting on Mike which led to a series of events ending with Mike’s death without giving a single penny to his family.
Kim took a risk of getting at Howard even though she knew the risks of Lalo still being out there. Yeah, she was told that he most likely wouldn't go after them, but it still caused Howard his life. She has blood on her hands, and she could have been rational if she wasn't so stuck up in becoming more like Jimmy.
@@JimboMarsh What happened to Howard was in no way her fault, neither she nor Jimmy would've had even a slight reason to suspect that Labour would contact them. @@morethanlegend4767 It's their fault the same way that the airplane crash in Bb is Walt's fault. Not directly a consecuence of their own actions, but rather indirectly. Now I think it's more of a philosophical question wheter you consider that to be their fault or not, but I believe it is, in a way; still, they were responsible for starting the chain of events that led to these catastrophic events.
@@joahqin I don't think they hold fault, just because you're involved in a series of events that lead up to an incident, doesn't mean you hold fault, fault would mean that you knew what you were doing would have negative consequences, or at least you should have seen how your actions would have had those consequences, in both cases neither Kim nor Walt could have realistically predicted the outcome of their action. Both the fact that the planes crashed, and that Lalo and Howard would have shown up simultaneously were complete coincidences outside of boths control. Walt didn't know the father was an air traffic control planner and Kim assumed logically from the information she was given that Lalo was dead (even if he wasn't). While you're correct in saying they were part of the reason for the tragedies it would be very unfair to assign them any fault.
Nice catches
This and her managing to convince Lalo the first time made Kim way too overconfident about herself.
Mike made a big mistake telling this to Kim rather than Jimmy.
The song playing in the background is "Isle of Misery" by Teri Norton. I've long thought that the music throughout BB and BCS is low key perfect, and this is my new go-to example.

Bravo Rhea & Jonathan. What a gem of a scene. Two stellar actors...knocking it out of the park. And I think Rhea did a great job directing this episode.

I love how BB and BCS absolutely raised the bar of story telling, through film.
Amazing to see a conversation between two characters who talk with their eyes
Rhea is so staggeringly good in this role. Not many actors ever land a role that showcases their immense talents so perfectly and so fully for so long. Rhea will always have Kim.
Great subtle acting. Kim's body language is an open book to Mike.
And when she spits out "I DO know you!", I think Mike was slightly annoyed by it, not because she knows him, but her approach to deal with such situation.
He knows she does shady things with Jimmy and both are smart, but her "I DO know you!" move was just stupid, considering she has no clue with whom she's dealing with (cartell henchman). Such line could make the difference between stay alive or end up in the desert. Mike is just fed up with civilians who set a food into criminal territory, but don't know how do behave infront of bad guys. Well, Mike is the most low key character in this series.
Soooo many details for us all to dissect long after the series comes to an end. So many possibilities for prequels and spin-offs. Truly masterful work.

This reveal is Better Call Saul’s version of when Walt visited Skyler and he was hidden off camera.
Which scene?
@@prot07ype87 I assume they mean Walt and Skyler's final conversation in "Felina."
To me, one of the great scenes from this show. Has everything, respect, admiration, courage, and acknowledgment. Two wonderful actors at the top of their game, interpreting a well written scene!
Every week Mike/Jonathon amazes me with how much he can convey with a nod or a stare
A thousand to one chance eh?
You can see and feel the pain from Mike in this scene.
I just realized that Kim is better at understanding silence than Saul may ever be.
It just struck me how many characters/actors, whenever they are present, give unbelievable weight to a scene.
