From the perspective of a former pet store employee, I can confirm that like 80% of the employees either aren’t informed on the animals they sell, or they just don’t care.

I hate some pet store workers (obviously there’s the good ones) if I was the pet store worker and someone came in wanting to get into fish keeping and wanted to do it properly like Jenna I would’ve recommended a 10 gallon with live plants and once it’s established I would’ve told them to come back in a few weeks and get a betta and maybe some snails. I own 5 bettas in fully planted tanks and I love them so much. They are gorgeous fish but also when kept in the proper environment they also have a ton of personality and I even taught one of mine how to jump for their food and they always greet me when I go into my room except for my blind one that I rescued.

Such an emotionally intelligent human being. Jenna is a role model for me indefinitely, and I'm proud of the life lessons that she's helped me learn. She has absolutely no victim complex attached to her wrongdoings, no chip on her shoulder, and is quick to make an example of herself if it means her mistakes may not be repeated by anyone she influences. A female hero of mine for sure. Not because she's a perfect person, but because her desire to be humane surpasses her desire for self-preservation.

Girl, as a hobbyist fish keeper of goldfish, you are NOT the first one to do this. People at pet shops generally aren’t very well knowledgable about fish. So they will recommend tanks that actually aren’t suitable, so honestly don’t worry about it everyone’s made the mistake at first, but some fish will die before you can finish researching & rectify it. If you wanna try keep fish again, I’d recommend cold water fish, they are hardier & generally easier for beginners ^_^
My goldfish lives in a one gallon round tank. It has marble things in the bottom and a fake plant. Is that okay?
tdbsid dhbhedk I do not keep goldfish, however I do know enough about them to say that goldfish need a bigger tank than a gallon. Goldfish can grow very big, however in captivity they do manage to stay pretty small. Depending on the type of goldfish you have, the minimum for MOST (not all) is 20 gallons for one goldfish according to the information I’ve read (again, I’ve never owned goldfish, so I am not very experienced with them, I’ve just read up on them). I don’t recommend fish bowls for any type of fish, they are too small and fish don’t normally get the amount of oxygen they need to survive, so that shortens their life span. I definitely recommend getting a filter (which I doubt you have since you’re housing the fish in a bowl and you didn’t mention it) since goldfish generally produce a lot of waste. As for substrate, make sure the gravel (if that’s what you’re using) is big enough that your goldfish will not be able to swallow. I personally believe real plants are better for fish than fake plants, but i’m sure goldfish will live just fine with fake plants as long as the plants are hardy and they can’t bite chunks off. If you ever decide to get real plants, make sure they are safe to eat as goldfish do eat plants. I hope this helped you even a little bit. I hope the best for you and your goldfish.

tdbsid dhbhedk goldfish need a minimum of 20 gallons for the first fish and it’s recommended that you do 10 - 20 gallons for each after. We had success with 3 in a 60 gallon. They get huge. One of my fancy goldfish is as big as my hand. They are also very messy so they need water changes more frequently or a very large filter. If you have the long body goldfish then they really need a pond environment. Like she said in the video. Just because they can live for a while in an environment doesn’t mean it’s the best. Five gallon is really only suitable for a betta. Nothing below 5 gallons is suitable for anything but a mossball.
I am only 13 and trying to get my mom to help me. At least it’s not in those tanks in the store anymore. I am trying my best to save up to get a decent size tank, but they are expensive.

I work at a pet store, and im in charge of all the animals there and the fish tanks. I try my absolute hardest to give the best advice i can from what ive learned through my own research. Im going to school for zoology/animal education, so I really do care about giving people the best advice that I can! I always try to encourage people to go home and do their own research as well. But, sadly most of my co workers know NOTHING about the animals and just give random advice, however its not really their fault. Pet stores dont do anything to train their employees and teach them about the animals their selling/caring for. There's also a lot of ignorant people , who i will give advice to and tell them for example do not buy a tiny plastic fish bowl for their fish, it will die, and they don't listen/care because "its just a fish". The main reason i even still work at a pet store is to hopefully provide decent care to the animals we sell. and provide as best advice as i can to people buying animals, so those animals dont suffer.

Former pet store employee here. I can confirm this is 100% true. It was honestly the most emotionally draining job I’ve ever had. I was there for about 8 months, but the fact that I was one of the only employees that actually made an effort to care for the animals just ruined the whole experience for me.
As a former employee that worked at a pet store. I always gave the most info I could give to someone. 90% of the time people would be mad at me because they didn't like that they couldn't put certain fish in with other fish of their choice. Yes, it gets very draining when these animals can live a long time. Other people were understanding, Some employees do just give whatever to make the customer happy. I am sorry that you had a bad experience when you got your fish. The golden rule is one gallon per inch of how big they are going to be when they are fully grown, Some fish are an exception to the rule that they need way bigger tank.

I had fish as pets growing up. I cried and mourned each of their deaths, no one around me understood. I appreciate this video and it normalizing my intense emotions around my fish even though it's been years since I've had any. It made me feel supported and I am sending all my love.

Hi Jenna, I'm an avid fish keeper of seven years and I just wanted to thank you for they heart you have put behind caring for your animals and for these fish. I think it's horrible that the store would give you this information. That's not good ethics or a good way to run a fish business on their part. It can be hard to do research on these animals and get good information, but I hope this doesn't discourage you from trying again. These are truly wonderful and rewarding animals. I think it is brave and kind of you to point out your mistake in hopes of preventing others from making it. Your dedication and kindness is an inspiration. Best of luck.

I wish people cared as much as Jenna about fish. A family my mom was petsitting for had a betta in a small bowl, no filter, no lighting or heating, just a bowl of dirty water. The fish died while my mom was watching them, and the family said, “oh yeah they die all the time.” And then they got a new fish.

Felt this. As a child, I didn't have a great many pets as I am allergic to both cats and dogs. When I was 13 convinced my mother into letting me have a betta fish to care for on my own for at least 6 months to prove I was responsible enough for something else like a bird, rabbit, or hamster. I bought him and all of his equipment myself. I put him in one of those very high-tech Aquafarms that use the fish waste to fertilize plants. One day he got a swim bladder problem and I freaked out thinking he would die. We put him in salt water and it turned out he was just constipated. Not a big deal. However, before we decided to take him out of his hospital tank I decided to look from the top of the tank and check for anything. I noticed that his scales weren't looking as smooth as they were supposed to and I knew it was dropsy. Being 13, I couldn't do much but tell my mom about it. She overlooked it and said "He's fine you're just overreacting." and proceeded to not believe me until there was no hope of saving him. I was crushed. I couldn't even look at him for the last few days without crying. I had to ask my mom to check him for me the night before he died and she told me he looked like he was struggling to breathe. I came home from school the next day to have my mom tell me he died in the middle of the night (10 days after the 6th-month mark.) I cried many times that day and buried him in our backyard. I knew he wasn't going to live very long, but it tore me up to know he was suffering and I did something wrong to let him get sick. RIP Marty.

And also, the association I volunteer at doesn’t have a “shelter” per say, we have a big farm that was provided by us from an animal lover and we care for about 200 dogs in that farm. I used to keep betta fish in tiny little bowls without even heat or filtration. Now I don’t keep betta fish in anything less than ten gallons with a heater and filter.

All rodents and rabbits from a pet store will be from mills, their siblings will be snake reptile/bird food. As someone who has never owned fish or know anything about fish, I would have done the exact same thing. It’s an honest mistake and it is okay, know you know what to do and what not to do. Anyone with fish knowledge know that bettas are aggressive fish and they should never be kept together... Obviously it didn't take long before the male bit the female to death.. I have no intention of ever buying a fish but I still listened to you talk about this for half an hour because it felt like we truly saw your heart. So glad you’re here in our lives.
I had the same experience when I bought my leopard gecko. The woman at the pet store told me that the substrate he needed was sand because they live in the desert. But that was totally wrong. Turns out sand would kill my gecko because it's highly likely he would get impaction and his digestive tract would explode. I have since learned that there was so many things they neglected to tell me about his care, so many things that if I hadn't done my own research he would've died within two weeks. Pet stores are terribly run in relation to the care and well being of animals.
Katie Hensley yeah, I don’t really trust pet stores anymore for my leopard gecko’s care, he was in not very good conditions before I got him, he had two hides (he should have a shedding hide) and was on sand (not safe for the reasons you stated).
He’s much happier on Eco Earth now, he’s about to get his nice third hide, and he’s a bit underweight so I need to get his tail a bit fatter

Pet stores are just as bad for guinea pigs. They sell cages that are way too small, they sell food/treats that will make them sick, and they sell plastic balls and wheels that they should NEVER run on. I don't get it!

From what I understand everyone who was correcting her are apart of the fish keeping community on youtube who've likely either made the same mistake of trusting the guys working at the stores when they started keeping fish or have seen it happen a million times since from the way Jenna was describing the situation this is actually kind of normal sadly. It was obvious this wasn't her fault, it's just a shitty situation all around.

I'm a fish hobbyist. I'm about 9 minutes in.
Jenna, honestly yeah you couldve done more research, but I would 100% blame it on the fish seller. They're a privately owned fish company. They are going to tell you the EXACT wrong thing so that your fish die, and you come in and buy more fish from them. I have seen it a thousand times. Circular tanks are not good for ANY fish, and barbs, tetras and even bettas are NOT beginner level fish. They're all extremely aggressive, and incompatible with each other. Intermediate level. But again, the seller will tell you that it's okay to put them together so that they all attack each other, then die, so you can come back and buy more.
I guess, if you're even reading this, my advice for you is to do more fish research before you commit to a tank, and dont rely on the things a fish seller says to you. Maybe throw up a poll here on CZcams? Buy a tank for yourself, you dont have to go to a fish store to get something you are satisfied with. Walmart sells a 10 gallon tank, with the filter and lights for 30 dollars. Let us know, you have this size tank, what fish are good with each other and are easy to care for. I think your apology is 100% sincere and I'm sorry you were given bad information and wasted your money. I'm not going to compare you to Laura Lee. There is no comparison. You have true compassion for your pets.

Raynii Denee Hey! Just curious - would you still consider betta fish as intermediate level for someone planning to *only* have a betta fish, and not try to find compatible species for tank buddies?
@@LadyUnderhill Not really, no. :) bettas are easy to take care of on their own, but I'd highly suggest not getting a "betta tank." They need at LEAST 1.5 gallons to swim in, and places to hide. TetraFin has a 1.5 gal tank you can find at Walmart, complete with a light and filter. Throw a snail or two in there with it and you got a happy boy :) good luck!!

@@LadyUnderhill Bettas need a minimum of 5 gallons to be happy. They actually originate from very large rice patty fields with extensive swimming areas. No fish should ever be kept in less than 5 gallons tbh. Goldfish need 10 gallons for the first fish, and add 10 gallons for every additional fish, they get very large after a few years, eventually they'd need 20 gallons for one.

I know you’ll probably never read this Jenna, but I wanted to share that watching your video made me educate myself about proper fish care and help my sister get the right environment when she decided to get fish for my nieces and nephews. I went along with them to the pet store and the sales person recommended a small glass bowl and plastic plants, but we bought the right supplies because of what I learned from watching your video. Ps. Your compassion, humility, and kindness have always inspired me to be a more conscientious, better person. ❤️

I am currently cycling a 40 gal tank and could always use more pointers! I do hope one day you feel healed from this experience and consider having a tank of your own with more fishies. They are quite a joy to see swimming around. I never knew about the dangers of the curved tank and I am thankful I couldn't afford one and just lucked out with getting a rectangle tank. Also, I would recommend a beta fish with a 5-10 or more gallon rectangular tank, filter, heater, safe plastic plants are ok, live plants, gravel and/or sand, hiding areas, proper food, water with water conditioner, and then anything else you want to have.
