Jenny used to pray for God to make her into a bird so she could fly far, far away from her abusive childhood. The last thing you see as he leaves her grave is a flock of birds flying far, far away.

The saddest most ironic thing about this scene is Jenny told Forrest he didn't know what love is, and in the end he showed that he knew what love was more than she ever did.

I know a lot of people don’t like Jenny, but I feel like there were two stories here. Jenny kept pushing Forest away because she hated herself and kept running away from her problems. And the way Forest kept accepting her showed how compassionate and kind he is. This is one of the best movies I’ve ever seen.

    • @HienPham-ow5ky
      @HienPham-ow5ky Před 2 lety +168

Some people look down on Jenny for the way she treated Forrest, probably because they've had difficult relationships themselves. But when you look at what happens with an objective mind you can see she goes out of her way to not harm him. She stays as far away from him as possible whilst she suffers the effects of having been raped as a child. Indeed the worst thing she does is leave him without saying goodbye and deprive him of fatherthood for some time in a later scene. It is quite commendable to limit your pain to yourself rather than becoming corrupted by it to the point of harming your loved ones. It is also quite commendable that Forrest looks past the destructive behaviour she has limited to herself and still sees only the good in her. Whatever limited pain he does experience as an unintentional consequence of her actions he depletes within himself in a productive way through the force of his spirituality czcams.com/video/tWzbCk18wTw/video.html. This is what Eternal Dharma/Soulmateship is all about, indeed this is what Love is all about. Doing the utmost to not harm the harmless, and depleting the pain you do receive within yourself. But all of that requires great spiritual fortitude that has built up over countless lifetimes. Those who are not so spiritually developed risk intentionally hurting others. For them all you can do is set a good example by living according to Principle, and making yourself available to give therm guidance. But you need to be very careful when you do encounter corrupted persons. On the one extreme you should not judge and condemn them as being worthless. On the other extreme you should not destroy yourself to try and save them, which is a risk that exists if you're spiritually driven because you will find something good in them. Instead you should approach everything in life in an intelligent, balanced way. That means just teach thern Principle if they are interested. Without making the mistake of "falling in love" that is actually lust. Such corrupted persons often suffer from being unloved by those they have loved from a young age, such as their parents. So they have a twisted idea of what love actually is and that can lead to bad outcomes when combined with the greed, hatred, ignorance that arises from their pain. If their love remains unrequited they will destroy themselves trying to replace it with sensual pleasures. Their only hope is to find spirituality and serve the Principle of Love itself rather seeking love from others. And your duty is limited to showing them the way if you have the Wisdom to do so. All of this means you should never help anyone in a way that indulges their greed, hatred, ignorance, out of your misguided love for them, because that will actually harm them tbh with you.

@@HienPham-ow5ky That's a really fascinating and interesting view on the characters. I've learned that a lot of drug abuse and addiction is a symptom of some kind of underlying trauma. We never really learn much about Jenny's grandma, but it's entirely possible that she was her paternal grandmother who also may have abused her in some way, taking her anger out on her son (Jenny's father) being imprisoned for the abuse he did to her. It could also be that she genuinely did the best she could for Jenny, but didn't know how to help her.
I think there's something to be said about Forrest's character in this movie as well. Most movies like this would have the protagonist go on a mirror of his journey, where they seek out fortune while taking their loved ones for granted, up until the final act where they begin to reconcile and rebuild those relationships. For Forrest, all he ever wanted was to maintain those relationships he had with friends and family, but tragedy happens frequently. His wealth isn't even something he really cares about, as long as he can make his loved ones happy, and the way that he initially makes money is keeping a promise to his dead best friend. At the end of it, all Forrest has left is his son and Lt. Dan.

I will say that if jenny did not have her own life the way it was, she would have never been content with Forrest. If Jenny was with Forrest since the beginning, she would probably keep on thinking of what if and both of them would be miserable. This is the beauty or perhaps the curse of life, sometimes we need to make those "wrong" choices in order to know what is right for us, or may there weren't any wrong choices to begin with. In life, it will happen to all of us when we are so upset of our loses, let it be a break up, or a divorce, or losing a job, but without those events, we will never become who we are now. Its just like what Forrest said in the scene, perhaps life is a combination of randomness but at the same time full of destiny.

Her father sexually abused her and she spent the rest of her life trying to escape intimacy. When she did have intimacy with him she left because she couldn't handle it. She finally straightened out her life when she realized she was pregnant with his child. She got a job and was doing well, but then she found out she was sick. She got in contact with him so that he would know that he had a child and he offered to take care of her in her death as the only family she had left. She asked him to marry because she genuinely loved him and she wanted to give him that as proof that she really loved him. Nowhere was it ever implied that little Forrest wasn't his.

He was always belittled by everyone else, but never shaken. Pure resilience that was mistaken for the lack of understanding or intelligence by those who never bothered with him. Doing one's best to carry on without someone you love is one of the hardest things to do, but you're right about Forrest. He was brave enough to deal with that it's tough to deal with reality and how hard it was to say goodbye to Jenny just like it was tough for me to say goodbye to my grandmother after she died of breast cancer despite early treatment and I cried when Mom told me that she died. But, other than that she is whole again and in a place where she will be loved for ages!

It's true, most people would commit suicide or freak out, maybe even become murderers if they would have had to go through the same things as he had to. His character represents the idea that inner strength does not depend on your intelligence but on how much you appreciate your own life and living in general.

That moment at 01:32 where Jenny tells Forrest: "I love you."
That is a HUGE step for her.
Jenny learned as a child not to trust. That is the lesson that her father taught her through his abuse of her. She learned that she was not worthy of respect and love. To close herself off. Not to let anyone in. To run away when people came too close..
But now she has healed enough that she can trust. Healed enough to feel worthy to love and to be loved. Enough to say "I love you" and really mean it, without fear.

What’s amazing is that this scene truly shows the amount of feelings he had for Jenny. He lost Bubba, he lost his mother, but the amount of emotion he shows after losing Jenny is on a whole different world of love and compassion and I, as a grown man, will always tear up every time I watch this. Especially after he says “he’s so smart” and being a father of two, that hits really deep. I want my kids to be better than me.

The face he makes when he connects "his son" with himself, the realization that he may have passed on some genetic anomaly, Tom Hanks nailed that. This is a tough film to watch. I have known people like Forrest Gump - and they were the nicest people you could ever want to meet, so this film is a way to connect with those friends from years past. But you are correct, his soliloquy is poignant and touching.

Jenny: "I wish I could have been there with you."
    Forrest: "You were."
Oof, the two words that kill me in this movie...
The final moment as he walks away, the birds pass over..."Dear God, make me a bird, so that I can fly far far far away from here."
    Jenny's prayer.

Just rewatched Forest Gump for like the 5th time: I laughed, I cried, I shrimped, etc. It's one of my favorites. But when reading the discourse of the movie most of the critisism is always with Jenny. Like everyone seems to genuinely think that 30 second Family Guy joke actually is what happens in the movie.
I think it just shows how a lot of people don't have experience or knowledge with sexual abuse victims. Jenny is portrayed fairly tragically and realistically.
There's a reason this part of her life is clearly pointed out as it's integral to her actions. There are so many movies that have Jenny like characters without that background and the depth, but here when it's being done so accurately, is the time people get the most upset about it (probably bc Forest is so lovable everyone wants to protect him).
Yes she isn't the best person (I wouldn't judge Forest if he didn't want anything to do with her) but even watching now I see the internal struggle she always has regarding Forest. But his unconditional and relentless love is something hard to let go of for someone who's been through what she has, growing up in a time where she was unable to get the help from mental health experts she would need.
So she tries filling her life with sex, drugs, adventure, etc to keep her mind occupied. And being with all those abusive boyfriends is a very common action for someone who's suffered from abuse.
And critics ignore that Jenny seems aware of all this and does try to get away to let Forest live his life without her, that's part of why she keeps leaving. But codependent relationships are much more common and harder to leave without unbiased intervention than people think. And every time she sees Forest or gets too deep in her choices she runs back.
I think the perspective it just helps play into this subconscious heteronormative idea that women can be a succubus who will use men who love them and drain them of their love and money but not really care about them. Instead of seeing women as actual people with depth and complexity and especially ones who have been through what she has.
And they also ignore how the movie portrays her, breaking it down to small bits that obfuscate the complexities. If a woman isn't a completely altruistic character in a story then she is generally considered a bad person (look at how complicated bad men are treated by audiences in media vs women) and then going further with Jenny being more damaged than that makes her hated. I don't personally think a character has to always be the best person morally to be a great character.
And furthermore she indirectly helps Forest succeed. His love for her is what often kept him passionate and moving to be successful. And her leaving all those times gave him space to pursue those activities. I'm not saying she's responsible for his success but she definitely didn't undermine it.
Though I can't help but feel my heart break every time I see the scene when she leaves one of the times and Forest is with his mom by the lake and rests his head on her shoulders. Pretty relatable to me especially in my younger dating life. It's just a sad reality of life that the people you love may not be able to love you the same way.
But it's all part of the depth of the story, Jenny torn between giving forest his space (she tells him numerous times she thinks she's bad for him) but unable to ever completely relinquish that love he has for her. Neither Forest nor Jenny have been given their fair share of direction in life to love in a healthier way (Jenny being broken by her history and Forest not having been taught to move on from unrequited love).
But I also think people undermine Forest's intelligence more than he deserves and put all the onis on Jenny. Kind of like many people in the movie undermine his intelligence (fancy that...). Forest isn't stupid, he just treats and perceives situations in more simplistic and naive ways. A big factor of why he thinks he's stupid is that people keep telling him he is rather than his actions being stupid. He's a product of a time before we understood nuero divergent intelligence, yet still succeeds in spite of all that.
The man is a captivating storyteller, was an ideal soldier when things were explained in clear unambiguous ways, yet still knew to break rank to save his platoon in Vietnam, he understood everything that was happening in Vietnam and it's dangers, starting a shrimping business (how many of you could get a boat and start shrimping without CZcams tutorials), didn't let the prostitute sleep with him bc he didn't like her or her breath, understood he was lying in an ad for money, also understands and sympathizes with Jenny's trauma (the not enough rocks line is very underrated imo), etc.
He also knows Jenny doesn't love him the way he loves her. He literally calls her out for it and says he understands what love is regardless of what she thinks. He also seems to get that Jenny is dying of Aids (EDIT: It's never explicit what she has) and wants to marry him for the safety and care at the end. Forest chooses this life with her because it makes him happy. I don't really see it as taking advantage of someone cognitively divergent, but two people choosing a situation that works for them.
I see it as two wayward souls in a world that doesn't understand how to see anyone not completely binary in their mind and abilities finding each other and living their best life at the end. It's not all perfect, Jenny is not a great person, but Forest is happy and successful. I think that matters.
Out of all the critiques on the movie (Jenny, Forest being too pure, coincidences, etc) the only ones that make sense to me now are how weirdly the movie is anti counter culture and pro traditional culture. That anyone can be successful if you pull yourself up by your bootstaps and all the liberals are angry abusive drains in society.
And the total belief in a Christian God. I mean damn, the movie implies God caused a storm to ruin the shrimping boats of a bunch of poor black shrimpers just so 2 white guys can become rich. Can't believe I didn't catch that until this viewing. Gump being so effortlessly successful gives unintended creedance to conservative values.
As much as I absolutely love this movie and it's one of the few 9 out of 10s in my head cannon, I still can't help but laugh to myself when I think a good tag line would be "Even the dumbest white guy has it easier than minorities and women in this country".
But I just blame that on the source material. I mean they fixed up so much from the book (don't read it, I promise you it's not worth it, there's a reason the film rights were sold before the book was published bc the central premise is literally the only good thing about it) it's not surprising some very unuanced anti left aspects stayed involved tbh

Forrest may not be the most… I guess traditionally intelligent person but I feel like he is extremely emotionally intelligent. And he’s just so unique because he clearly is capable of so much. And he never let his IQ get in his way. He never was ashamed of himself. He knew his life was a bit harder because of his low IQ but he wasn’t necessarily held back by that. He went to freaking Vietnam for goodness sake. He could disassemble and reassemble his gun in record time. He was incredibly brave, he started a shrimping business on Bubba’s behalf and was very generous with his earnings. He became a complete self made millionaire and celebrity. And still remained humble. What an amazingly written character.

He’s capable of feeling ALL of his feelings. He can hold grief in one hand, gratitude in the other. He knows life is not an “either or” proposition; instead, life is ‘this AND that’. • @baonguyenxuanthai711
      @baonguyenxuanthai711 Před 2 lety +43

Clearly Jenny was a very troubled girl, young woman, and woman. From a very young, vulnerable age, she was sexually abused by her father, which ultimately led to her moving in with her grandmother, but didn't find the love that a child requires there, but rather with her good friend Forrest. They grew up together like peas and carrots, and from the short glimpse we see of them in high school, they are each other's only friends. Consider high school from a social perspective, and you can see that even with the best intentions, pretty girls are not best and only friends with the mentally disabled, but Jenny was never ever to branch off and have other friends. She stayed by Forrest, and Forrest stayed by her.
When she got to college, she sought out someone to fill the emotional hole that she had inside of her, and we see this when she's in the car with the guy that Forrest beat the snot out of. It's at this point that I think Jenny begins going down the wrong track. Since Forrest ruined her chances of getting lucky that night, she chose to take advantage of him. It didn't matter to her that this was her best friend of 10+ years! she needed physical confirmation that she worth a damn, because her entire life she had felt worthless. This was the beginning of a seemingly endless wild goose chase for confirmation of self worth.
As children, her answer to life was simple: run. This personality trait stuck with her throughout her life. Run away from dad. Run away from bullies. Run away from danger in Vietnam. Running was Jenny's best defense mechanism to pain or challenges. When she was faced with the shame of having her best friend see her naked and abused in a nightclub, instead of facing it, she told Forrest to leave her alone and never talk to her again. At this point Forrest tells Jenny that he's going to Vietnam, and she tells him that no matter what, don't be a hero, just run, and then gets into a cab and runs away from yet another disaster in her tragic life.
The next time we as an audience see Jenny she seems happy for the first time in her life. She's a hippie, playing guitar, but the subtext is so in your face that it's almost too easy to gloss over. A stranger approaches her and invites her to San Francisco, and she goes with him. What I mean is that Jenny could never stay anywhere too long. This theme is reinforced throughout the rest of the film, at first through Forrest's letters to her being returned to sender.
When Forrest returns home from Vietnam his is awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor, and while in DC he is giving a speech on the Mall when, as can only happen in movies, he reconnects with Jenny as thousands of people cheer them on. And they're happy together.
But then the spark goes out when we see why Jenny is there. In her search for purpose and confirmation of worth, she's hooked up with a complete disaster, a man with anger issues who's abusive. Sound familiar? Jenny is trying to recreate her father and get it right this time. In her mind, what happened to her as a child was her fault, and if she can find a person who embodies who her father was, and come up with different results, she can fix her past. Forrest then does what Forrest does best and beats the snot out of another bad influence on his best friend. Unfortunately, Jenny chooses to go with the abusive boyfriend instead of Forrest, and they wave goodbye to each other as her bus pulls away from DC.
At this point, what happens next with Jenny becomes unclear, but it eventually leads to nightclubs, drugs, other men, and contemplating suicide. When she's used up all of those people and devices, she turns to the one constant in her life: Forrest.
She returns home to Greenbow, Alabama and stays with Forrest, and they "was like peas and carrots again." On a walk, they come across her childhood home, and Jenny breaks down with the memories of her broken childhood, and her decisions that she's made in her life ever since. She finds comfort in the life that Forrest can give her, but that terrifies her more than anything. When Forrest offers her an opportunity to leave it all behind and become his wife, she rejects him, and tells him that she wouldn't make a good wife.
What happens next is where my cynicism comes into play. Clearly the two have sex that night, and those who I discussed this with last night say it was consensual. I think it was rape. At this point in his life Forrest is an adult and certainly knows about the birds and the bees, but I think he was still a virgin. Jenny comes into his room in the middle of the night and takes that from him. Even though this was probably enjoyable for Forrest, he didn't have much of a say in the matter. Either way, this becomes too much for Jenny and she leaves the very next day.
Distraught with losing Jenny yet again, Forrest begins running. He equates running to Jenny, because that's what Jenny has always told him to do. If he can't have Jenny, he might as well run. During his run, years pass, and we see Jenny working in a diner. She's dressed professionally for the environment, she cut her hair, she looks like she finally got it together. And that is the very last time we, as an audience, see Jenny during Forrest's story on the bench. The next time she's seen is in the movie's present.
Before I get to that, I just want to dissect Forrest's story about Jenny before getting into his future with her. She was abused as a child. She was always searching for self confirmation of worth. She made poor decision after poor decision. She chased after the wrong kind of men. She constantly took advantage of her dearest friend for personal selfish gain, even it was subconsciously. She played with his emotions in order to feed her own. It's clear that what happened to her as a child made her into who she became as a woman, but never once throughout the story does Jenny take personal responsibility for any of her poor decisions. But she doesn't blame them on her father, either. There is simply a complete and total lack of accountability. She went through life searching for confirmation, purpose, and answers. She truly loved Forrest, but wouldn't do anything and everything she could for him, like he would for her.
The reason Forrest was at the bus stop was so he could visit Jenny. When he arrives at her apartment, it appears as if she finally got it right. She looks clean, she's got a job, and the reason behind all of this is because she has a son, Forrest Jr. Going back to my first point of this, it seems like a given that Forrest Jr. is Forrest Gump's son, but the whole reason I wrote all of this is to ask the question: REALLY?
We find out that Jenny is sick. It is my assumption, and everyone I've spoken to about the matter, that it's AIDS. With no cure and a ticking time bomb on her life, Jenny had to put someone else first for the first time in her life. She had to think of the well being of her son. Faced with a very short timeline and a huge disaster, I believe that Jenny turned to the one constant in her life, who just so happened to be a wealthy, somewhat balanced landowner. She knew that Forrest would do anything for her, but she was afraid of him rejecting her and her child, because she had rejected him time and time again. So she lied.
Jenny's entire goal in life had been self confirmation, worth, and purpose. She found all three of those with the birth of her baby boy. At this point her purpose was to protect him, and nothing else. When she found out she was terminal, her purpose didn't change, and neither did her character. Jenny would do whatever it took to protect the most important person in her life, so she turned to the only constant in her life to protect him. By telling Forrest that the boy was his, she knew that his ceaseless sense of responsibility and accountability would force him to take care of Forrest Jr., long after she died. She once again took advantage of the simple man, because of his greatness.
Did she love Forrest? Absolutely. Did she ever mean any harm or malice towards him? Absolutely not. But with her back against the wall and a clock telling her that she needs to act now, she lied to Forrest about fatherhood in order to protect and ensure that her son has a good future.

She has faults, her faults arose from a tormented childhood. She made choices that hurt one of the only people who ever truly loved her. Poor Forrest just wasn’t capable of seeing how toxic her life was. I think the dislike stems from people not understanding that anyone can be redeemed. Even if her change of heart came in the last few years of her life. She finally was able to realize that the happiness she had been searching for her entire life was from one of her first friends. Someone who never stopped loving her despite her self destructive habits. It’s a tragedy but I think that’s an important parts of the story. I think the entire movie when viewed from Forrest’s perspective is the idea that you should always try to see the best in people, see the beauty in life no matter how bad things seem, and to take things slow. Jenny’s life is used to show that sometimes the thing you so desperately search for could be something that’s was right next to you the whole time. @@KeiFox Some people look down on Jenny for the way she treated Forrest, probably because they've had difficult relationships themselves.

@@KeiFox Jenny's behavior is being miscast and oversimplified. She's not simply a gold digger and using Forrest. It's clear she has loved Forrest ever since childhood.
Trauma wrecks havoc on a person's belief systems and self-worth.
Jenny grew up in an abusive environment. She did not grow up with the security and love of a Mother and Father. She learned from a young age to run anytime she was confronted with something that was difficult for her. She even told Forrest, “If you ever run into trouble, don’t try to be brave - just run. Just run away.”
I am not saying this was a good or healthy way of living; but nonetheless she learned this unhealthy belief and it stuck with her.
It’s also clear Jenny is chronically depressed. She contemplated suicide by the bridge right before Forrest told her he was going to Vietnam. Later, she nearly committed suicide by jumping off the building. She slept a lot and didn’t talk much when she came to visit Forrest at his home. She had a traumatic, PTSD -like breakdown when she saw her childhood home.
Most people castigating her as a gold-digger, POS, etc in the comments have never experienced one-tenth of what she went through, and it shows. This callous and harsh attitude often makes it even more difficult for people suffering with mental health issues to overcome because so many people instantly demonize them without taking the time to understand their perspective. And it's probably a contributing factor towards why mental illness cases continue to rise in the world - lack of support.
To be clear - I am not defending Jenny's actions. Having sex with Forrest then leaving the next morning was wrong. Not even telling Forrest that he had a son was egregiously wrong. She made a lot of bad decisions in her life, and she suffered the consequences from them, including losing her own life.
What I AM saying is - one can say that a person's words and/or actions are wrong and ALSO be compassionate and sympathetic towards them at the same time. It doesn't have to be one or the other - you can be both.

@@KeiFox Just rewatched Forest Gump for like the 5th time: I laughed, I cried, I shrimped, etc.
I mean they fixed up so much from the book (don't read it, I promise you it's not worth it, there's a reason the film rights were sold before the book was published bc the central premise is literally the only good thing about it) it's not surprising some very unuanced anti left aspects stayed involved.

Hey Charlie Brown/Tuna! Forrest Gump is 1 of those movies that never gets old for me! Whenever I watch it, I just find that it is SO engaging and well-acted that it feels like it is a quick watch even though the movie is almost 2 1/2 hours long. I also love that it has moments that most people can relate to on an emotional level. For me Personally, I often connect with this movie because my brother actually has Autism (So Forrest and my brother can relate a bit since they are both disabled).
I also just wanted to mention that I actually posted a video on my CZcams channel that is almost like a tribute video to Forrest Gump (though I called it a Mashup). You see, there's a band named Family Of The Year, and they used their hit song "Hero" for Richard Linklater's 2014 movie called Boyhood. For my video, I used "Hero" as background music while showing various scenes from Forrest Gump. Aside from matching song lyrics with movie scenes, my intention with the video was to try and create something unique.
If you have a few minutes sometime and happen to be Interested, here is a link to the video: czcams.com/video/Or-sIiNANYg/video.html
If you don't check it out, then no worries at all! I certainly will Not be offended! But Thank You So Much in advance if you do see it! I hope you Have A Great Day Today, Charlie Brown/Tuna! Please Stay Safe and Stay Awesome! 🙂

So I’ve had a very rough few months. I’ve felt as though I’ve been slowly sinking into a dark void with no sense of direction. I wish I could say that it was sadness but it wasn’t even that. I could no longer experience what being happy was like, and when I tried to look back at the times when I used to be happy, they felt so far away. There was a civil war in my own head that I could not escape. I sank so deep into this void that began to harm myself and wish that I would no longer be alive. I had gone five months without crying, not because I didn’t want to, but because I physically couldn’t. I felt empty. Forrest Gump has always been one of my favorite movies and I love anything Tom Hanks. I’m not sure how it really happened but I just searched up Forrest Gump best scenes and found this one. I finally was able to let out tears and release the emotions that were long inaccessible. Forrest talks about the simple beauty of the world and how even in Vietnam the rain could stop and reveal the heavens. Often in life we take those around us for granted and lose sense of why we are here. Forrest is a masterpiece of a character because he teaches how we stray from recognizing the gift of life that was given to us and how we are blind to the true beauty of the world and everyone in it. He never takes his son for granted and he never loses remembrance of those he has lost. My relationship with my dad hasn’t always been the best, but I think we can all learn from Forrest. He shows us the love we can give eachother when others chose to spread hate. He stands by Jenny’s grave speaking of destiny and if it is a given or if we live our lives carried by the wind. I think that we should take a step back from the chaos of life and learn from Forrest. We can learn to love instead of hate, we can learn to appreciate the beauty of life, and we can learn to never take those around us for granted and show them that we love them. I have felt myself slowly beginning to pull myself out of the senseless void that has haunted me for too long. I have realized how wonderful life really can be if we know how to treat it. We could all use a Forrest in our lives.
