  • People often ask me what my favourite games of all-time are. I don't really keep a definitive personal ranking outside of the top two games that I've ever played. The one that unquestionably tops the list is Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time.
    Nowadays, it feels like the action-adventure video game genre is pretty standard. It's fairly standard platforming broken up by intermittent bouts of combat. What if I told you that I found the game that revolutionized the genre and became the game that the likes of Uncharted, Tomb Raider and more copied en route to their own success? By taking classic ideas and pairing them with brand new ideas, Ubisoft Montreal was able to create a game that may have had a bigger impact on modern gaming than we could have appreciated in 2003.
    In this episode of the RETROspective, I look back at the Prince of Persia franchise from its creation through to the launch of The Sands of Time. Then I review this game and explain what made it revolutionary in 2003 and allows it to still be one of the greatest games that I've ever played even 19 years later.

    Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time is an action-adventure game developed by Ubisoft Montreal and published by Ubisoft in 2003 for the PlayStation 2, GameCube, Xbox and Windows PC. Another game called Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time was released for the Game Boy Advance. It was re-released in 2006 on PlayStation 2 and 2009 on Windows PC in the Prince of Persia: Sands of Time Trilogy. A remastered version of the game was released in 2010 as part of the Prince of Persia Trilogy HD.
    The Sands of Time is the fourth game released in the mainline Prince of Persia franchise. It followed 1989's Prince of Persia, 1993's Prince of Persia 2: The Shadow and the Flame and 1999's Prince of Persia 3D. It is also the first game in what is colloquially referred to as The Sands of Time trilogy that includes this game, Warrior Within, The Two Thrones and The Forgotten Sands.
    Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time stars you as an unnamed prince. Having helped your father's army sack a kingdom, you take one prize for yourself: The Dagger of Time. However, this starts a chain of events that see time itself corrupt a neighbouring kingdom leaving you and a captive of that sacked kingdom to reverse time's revenge while an evil vizier tries to thwart you.

    Sands of Time is still magical after all these years.

      When I was re-playing the game for this video, I was really worried that I wouldn't enjoy it as much as when I played it the first time. I am quite happy that it's held up even after 19 years.

    Played the dos game with my dad, this game can be considered one of my pillars of gaming, like doom 2 which I played with my mom.

      Actually, you just jogged a memory loose. So back in the early 90s (I was maybe four or five), my family went to visit my mom's relatives in Italy. I remember one of them showing me a game on their computer and my foggy memory wants to say that it may have been the original Prince of Persia. Don't remember much. The colour scheme fit and so did the level design (the multiple levels of verticality that the Prince can explore). No idea if it was but maybe there was something subconscious that drew me to Sands of Time. In any event, it was quite fortunate.

    This game…THIS GAME seriously MADE my childhood! It was so revolutionary with its movement, the story was so cool! I remember when my dad bought our ps2 (which I have to this day) and this was one of the games we had with it. He described it as some ninja game, but man was it so much more lol. I really hope we get that remake!

    The Prince Of Persia franchise is one of a kind and I can safely say that it inspired most of the modern games and I have no doubt that will keep inspire future game developers and no doubt that will remain unique and one of a kind game in future

      The one thing that I hemmed and hawed about in making this video was if I should do a quick sizzle reel of the likes of Uncharted or rebooted Tomb Raider to show the modern take on this style of platforming. Decided to keep the visual focus on PoP but they definitely brought this style of platforming to the fore.

    Sands of Time and Prince of Persia 2008 are also my favorite games of all time!
    hope to see you talk about 2008 version soon,
    the platform design, art visuals and story telling of 2008 is also stunning and magical just like fairytale,
    SOT Prince and Farah, 2008 Prince and Elika, they're all wonderful character building !

    • @UnsilentOnAir
      @UnsilentOnAir  Před rokem +1

      Because I liked the various elements of SoT, I wasn't sure what to make of 2008 when taking it at its face. Then I played it and powered through it twice in a week. It was different than SoT and didn't reprise a lot of what I loved about that game but it was okay because what they made was still an amazing game. When this franchise is on, it's lightning in a bottle. They capture that magic so perfectly.

    I love the series. I remember as a child that what really impressed me about the game is the continuous flow. From the moment the hourglass is opened till it is sealed there are no real loading screens (cutscenes mask that cleverly). I found that so beautiful. There are many more things to love about it, but that aspect always struck me

    • @UnsilentOnAir
      @UnsilentOnAir  Před rokem

      Ah! I didn't even think about hiding the loading screens as a unique aspect of the game. It's funny because the next longform review that I'm working on includes a mention of badly hidden load screens in that game.

    Never played a Prince of Perfia game (grew up a PC snob) but I did see the movie with my high school friends at the time.
    I've also played the first 2 and a half Assassin's Creed games. This video was a comforting reminder that I've never beated Brotherhood for what feels like almost 10 years since I started it. Damn flying machine section.

    • @UnsilentOnAir
      @UnsilentOnAir  Před rokem +1

      And I was a dirty console peasant. Not that the last six years didn't make that obvious, anyway.
      I remember those flying machine sections. I didn't like particularly care for them either. That said, I stopped in the middle of Revelations and tried to play AC3 but literally fell asleep while playing it inside the first couple of hours. I figured that if a game put me to sleep, it's probably not for me.

    • @bustedsim
      @bustedsim Před rokem

      @@UnsilentOnAir I used to think that about falling asleep during stuff myself, but I started granting more lenency to account for my own fatigue. I've fallen asleep in movies that I later watched and liked and heck, I nodded off in the early sections of Mass Effect cause I just wandered the Citadel talking to squabbling alien diplomats, one of whom was incapable of expressing emotion. My own fault on that one really. That ssid, if a game or movie KEEPS doing that, yeah, probably not great.

    Prince of Persia was a inspiring game for many franchises and now people don't remember it
    Sad reality that i believe remake will not work much
    Even when my fav franchise is Prince of Persia

    • @UnsilentOnAir
      @UnsilentOnAir  Před rokem

      One thing I considered along the way was spending more time picking out elements in other games that can trace back their roots to Sands of Time. Not just the platforming design, mechanics and animations but even how some 8/16-bit game re-releases have a rewind function (it's not the same but I was stretching for comedic effect). I decided to keep the focus on PoP but I'm starting to think I should've talked more about the legacy of the game.
      And I was there with you on concerns about the Remake. I'm still not sold on it but now that they've moved it to Ubi Montreal, I'd imagine the team on it has triple-A experience so that's a positive.

    I have never played this one. I played the original DOS Prince of Persia, but that is the only one in the series I played.

    • @UnsilentOnAir
      @UnsilentOnAir  Před rokem

      I tried playing the original for footage to use in the vid. Didn't go well. But if you sit on the main menu enough, the game does a demo reel for you so that's what made it into the vid.
      Dang. I can't believe I missed a chance to reference Galaxy Quest. I'm sure I can find a way to wedge that into the next PoP game. "Never give up. Never surrender." would fit with the next game in the Sands of Time trilogy...
