That time Slash taught us how to play Paradise City

- Back in 2010, Slash talked us through the making of his debut solo album - playing with Josh Freese and Chris Chaney, working with producer Eric Valentine - and showed us how to play By The Sword, the song he wrote with Wolfmother's Andrew Stockdale AND explained how GN'R wrote Paradise City - and showed us how to play it.

How to become a legend
1. Have a curly hair
2. Become brian may or slash
Don't forget the🎩
And the shades
Ive got hair just like slash and May, still waiting on the legend part though lol.
Marc bolan started the trend he even wore the top hat
I think you mean BRIAN JONES , a real LEGEND , that plays any instrument , hand picks the members and gets the gigs and picks the name of the band that no one has ever come close to doing , BRIAN JONES AND THE ROLLING STONES , and fuck the hat and sunglasses
He speaks well, no swearing. I have a new found respect for Slash. He's intelligent and has some class. Super talented too.
fuck'n aye!
English upbringing 😉
@@jwm2568oi bruv ya got sum fuckin knackers on ya, eh?
Well, he is David Geffin nephew lol. All that BS about living on the streets is nonsense
What did you expect ? He s not a rapper !
I could listen to Slash talk forever.
Something about his voice is soothing.
watch asmr
You should listen to his audiobook I don’t know if he does the voice over but there might be a CZcams video
Yeah right😍😍😍
I was literally just thinking that same thing......
And Axl, too.
wow I never knew slash was such a chill guy.
so well spoken too.
read his book . not what you think
How long did he speak? A total of 4 of 11 minutes...Boy you are a real listener....
@@jeffreymarchant4020 who shit in your cornflakes
@@jeffreymarchant4020 4 minutes of speaking is still long enough to realize he's well spoken, you dumb fuck.

Yes! I can confirm it. He is my uncle
Billy .A I feel it as a sarcasm, I cannot prove it, just said as a normal thing...
I love how easy he makes guitar playing look.
He is amazing my friend
Thats because he's only playing short riff's...
@@jeffreymarchant4020 Idiot.
It is easy when you can devote every waking hour for decades to it ! ! Duh, Its what he does.......like your job of collecting people's garbage at the curb.......Same Thing
Yeah I agree it’s his job but it’s taken years of dedication to get to where he is. I read his book and he originally wanted to be a pro BMX rider. Not a bad career switch being in one of the biggest bands of all time 😆
You can hear his passion when he talks about guitars, GnR and music in general. The guy is a living legend!
He Is!!!!!!
He reminds me of the cool dude in high school that knew he was good, but didn't brag about it & always had a guitar around.
Def has a humble way about him.
Pretty sure slash is the original version of that dude
@@cjaria444 I graduated in '81, kinda doubt it! 😁
@A Lucky Man! haven't seen him since 1982, wouldn't know.
Worth watching the whole video, but for those with ADD, Paradise City starts at 7:00

"For those with ADD" hahahahhahahha
Slash please, never die. You´re the spirit, the very essence of Rock n´ Roll.
yea and along with all the gnr members
The song just wrote itself. When you put the ego aside and just let the music flow. What a humble man.
For him to say that these Rock Anthems "wrote themselves" when he clearly wrote them shows what a humble genius he is.
They did though. He’s just the antenna. There’s a reason artists don’t just make unbelievable song after unbelievable song. They can’t. They just fall out of the sky.
clean and sober..man..he looks..sounds good!
for a day...cause his editor told him he needed to go to Alcoholics anonymous before his video...or he wouldn't get paid...
Jeffrey...you’re a fucking moron
@@mr.smithgnrsmith7808 haha
That's why I love the work of Izzy and Slash together. They hardly ever play the same thing on the guitar but both thier parts together make up the song. Night train, Brownstone, My Michelle and Rocket Queen are my favorites on that record.
yes, this album is one of the best examples of 2 guitarists complimenting each other in amazing ways. and you are right. if you look at the tab, these guys very rarely play the same thing at the same time but their 2 pieces fill everything out.
My favorite songs from that album is exactly tha same.
Your right
I agree, those are the best songs!
I just came across this comment, and I actually have the record Appetite for Destruction on the turntable right now. And it's interesting to me that your favorite songs are the songs that weren't necessarily the singles! Rock on, brother 🤘🏾

Slash rocks. He’s so humble. The video where he’s playing with Les Paul shows what a great guy he is. Doesn’t show off his skills too much. Just jams along to what Les is playing. Super cool. Love this guy!! 🕶🎶✌🏻
Purely succking the dollars right out of your pocket for a venue...
Agreed. Les Paul was a monster on guitar, and Slash payed his respects to him accordingly.
I love hearing break downs of music. I think Paradise is so well put together. Blend of southern rock, hard rock and punk.
Yes sir! That minor/major hook that he attributes to Izzy is pure country/southern rock.
Paradise is my favourite song of all time.
The lads certainly hit the jackpot with writing songs that wrote themselves, One of the best albums of all time.
Slash is a real talent and seems to be a really humble down to earth guy. Not full of him self. I really enjoy just hearing him talk.
"Slash" is still the best sounding record of Slash's solo stuff (sonically, speaking, of course). Erik Valentine is amazing.
7:25 did he just reference dungeons and dragons?, god this man is a living legend.
Thank you so much for surfacing this! Now I finally understand how Slash and Izzy’s rhythm parts intertwined.
I think this comment is the reason why i'm here. Thanks!
never thought i'd see you here
I'm curious Adam, do you play any instruments?
when worlds collide!! Adam I didn't know you got down like that!
This is the First time I'm seeing Slash Talk

Thank You Slash, for reminding me of fun filled school days. !!!! Those were the days man....
El tiempo me dió la razón. Slash el más lindo y talentoso de GNR 💘🎩🎸
I love how his cat just hops in
Am I the only one who finds it satisfying to watch him play? He makes it look so easy.
I don’t know if you ever look back at the comments for these videos but you may not have any idea how much you meant to all of us back on the 80s we had nothing and then Guns came along and lit up the whole thing for us. Thank you Slash for your incredible talent and for being willing to worm so hard to share it with the rest of us.
He has such a nice speaking voice
I love that slash loves SONGS FOR THE DEAF. such an all time great album.
Very underrated with his theory, and his phrasing. He knows that fretboard very well. I actually learned a lot from watching Slash
Love your pro pic, where do I find it?
Didn't take long for some to say a world known guitar player is underrated...stop
@@WillGGG most of the population is brain damaged and don’t actually know what words beyond monosyllables like “food” and “go” mean. with underrated, what they are trying to say is not popularly known, or something to that effect, is my translation of the drooling drooping mouth mumbling incoherently.

Slash is a National Treasure.
Never will forget (what I remember) New years at Joe Robbie stadium in Miami …G&R thank you, so grateful to have been at that show.
I always admire Slash professionalism, he speaks with respect no cussing, that’s why he’s blessed.
saw him in chicago last thursday it was an awesome concert

7:00 for Paradise City. One of the best if not the best Gun and Roses songs..
yea tied with sweet child o mine
One of the coolest guitarists and an awesome person!
I love how he didn't lose his appearance/talent like Axl did
You mean he didn't start eating 5 cheese burgers a day? Lol
Rodrigo Mariath Implying he had those to begin with?
+Gadwin van Doom Supposedly Slash drank A LOT. Like in one day enough whiskey to kill an entire graduating high school class. Obviously an exaggeration. I heard his liver was so fucked up when he went to a doctor he was told if he didn't stop drinking he'd be dead in a week or a month or something.
MaynardOwns I was referring to Axl
Oh oops. I replied to the wrong person sorry. Was supposed to go to Rodrigo.
timeless video from a timeless player. Slash will live forever, or as long as humans populate this planet Earth and Rock and Roll is alive.
He is so much more down to earth, humble, and articulate than I imagined him being when I was a kid.
Such a nice guy!
Saw him play with GNR in 2017 at Orlando Fl....a childhood dream came true to see GNR live with Axl and Slash and they played for like 3 hrs straight...best show I've ever seen (I've seen a bunch of great ones!) it was unreal!!! Slash is truly a rock genius !
If I die and be reborn... I want to nail the guitar like Slash!
Timeless Frequency you can do it now
Or come back as the guitar Slash plays 💥
@Khaine Able you are absolutely right! It was more of less a joke. I play music for fun. and i make my own music in a way i can.
People say whatever they want about him. There are dozens if not hundreds fantastic guitar players and guys like Paul Gilbert or Buckethead are or another level of what you can do with this instrument but all of these years after he got established I can still hear a song that I have never heard before and know Slash wrote that. He released several albums outside of Guns n Roses. I have to say I don't own all of his albums he did with Meyles Kennedy, so I still sometimes here a song that I have never heard before and you can instantly say when he wrote a song and that can't be said about nearly any other famous guitar player.
Saul Hudson really is down to earth!
Slash is the master of guitar.
slash seems like the kind of guy that'll light your cigarette before you even ask for a lighter
Awesome....Thanks Slash
Slash is such a chill dude, My personal favorite guitarist
When legends take the time to elaborate on one of the most legendary ( and best selling albums ) and songs,
It shows how much class and influential there were and will be.
Slash is up there with Santana
Thanks
So much to learn playing at this level. A truly gifted and talented artist
I remember when appetite came out man that was something great
Slash is so cool and humble just a regular guy with a great talent that took him to stardom
This is pretty awesome! Love hearing the origins of one my favorite albums. Got Appetite as a little kid. One of the most kick ass ballsy records ever made. Less heralded favorite solo is from "Rocket Queen". Would dig playn and chatting with Slash, like many many would
Rocket Queen is a great tune with awesome playing throughout by Slash. Man there's fantastic guitar playing all over that album!
omg nightrain, fkin cried first time i heard that solo
I don't like so much of that solo, I prefer the Welcome To Jungle one.
I really dig Slash. He can really take you places listening to him play. I so glad he got himself together. He is worth it.
Absolutely ,if i saw Slash in person and shook his hand i would probably just pass out on the ground..He is a hero to me...I'm no fool ,i am a grown man i just respect people who shook the world with integrity ,great great performances humility and respect .

Slash , your just a freaking bad ass man !!!!
I've been a fan of Slash, and GnR since the first time I heard the Appetite album.. it is fascinating to be how intelligent he sounds when he speaks.. definitely weathered the height of fame better than most..
Quand la passion parle, avec Slash c'est le paradis de la guitare, les anecdotes des GnR , tout simplement pour notre plus grand plaisir❤❤
Talented, well spoken and down to earth.
Simply the greatest guitar player ever. Thank's for be here and give us inspiration
7:49 sounds so chill
I do believe his 59 SuperLead had a lot to do with his sound on AFD. but I also believe it was Clink who found a great EQ, Compression, Fit in the mix sound that we all know and love. in other words, I think Slash had the perfect combo of guitar and amp...but more importantly, he had the right tools and producer (all the way from Mic placement, to PreAmps, to tape compression. a lot of things had to go perfectly right..and they did. all the stars aligned for that album and its recording production. you had the right band, the right sound, the right engineer. what a lot of people also fail to include in this path is "what cab was he using + what speakers were in that cab"
Slash is a Vintage 30 and Greenback player...at least now he is. I'm not even sure he knows what gear was used on Appetite though. One of life's many mysteries.
Slash made everything go right!
You're my master Sir Slash ! I love your humbleness ! It's written in your face while you talk.
Ive watched this so many times and it never gets old
I like how slash builds on his riffs every 4 bars.. whether by compounding the chord.. inverting.. or by arpeggiating the chord with some legato spreads...
+Akili Alexander Yeah dude! He also platitudes the intonation of the chord by spreading the vertical harmonics around the basic linear melodies of the song.
+Larry McDaniel LOL

Don't forget the centrifugal, dead center constant, use of the exotic and rarely used pentatonic scale.
Yall are fcking killin it
+Clark Feeley He uses trillinear scales more, tbh.

how does his hair still look that great?! love this dude.

First time seeing Slash smile
2021 and I could still watch Slash all day! ❤
i could listen to 12 hours of this. i will now write some words and then you can writhe in the content's lack of existence... slash and izzy for 2 hours talking about how they wrote the guitar parts for each song on Appetite. all the stories, all the gear discussions, the "no, you should change that note to this" stuff, the stories of where they were and what they were doing when they wrote a riff, "we ate McD's and drank Jack every day when we wrote this album," etc. i would pay hot money for such a thing.
