There is a little back story behind the can collection scenes. Shift ups plans were to get some product placement from some drinks companies and she holds the holds the cans up like a model and gives a little history behind the drink before the world went belly up but couldn't get drink companies on board so had to make fictional drinks for the games.
One of my favorite elements of the game, besides the combat, was the enemy design. The origins of the Naytiba is blatantly obvious when you're exploring Altess Levoire, but that doesn't detract from how twisted & animalistic their designs are. The degree of genetic splicing & "evolutionary adaptation" makes me wonder if we'll see more of their kind in the sequel. I'm even surprised that Eidos 9 never threw in any new fish-like monsters, especially since fishing was the most focused-on minigame. Overall, I'd say that the worldbuilding through the environment & item descriptions helped make the story interesting enough to leave me with a few questions, and it makes sense why EVE is extremely reserved throughout most of the game, but therein lies the biggest compromise Shift Up made between the story & gameplay. Stellar Blade's plot falls in line with Nier Replicant, but takes more aesthetic inspiration from Nier Automata, but the twist here feels less like a plot revelation & more like a grand conspiracy. If the sequel wants to be an even greater success, it needs to dive deeper into the past, and with EVE becoming the very thing she once despised, her perspective can grow. And like you mentioned with Su & Enya, I enjoy side quests that intersect & help flesh out the characters of Xion. That needs to be expanded upon in greater length. Bounty board quests can be as superficial as they need to be, but genuine side quests should change & evolve familiar faces.
I’ll be honest I’m glad they didn’t go too crazy with the story and just focused on gameplay, it wasn’t trying to be Nier Automata, it definitely took inspiration but it did try to stand as it’s own thing and not just completely be like 2B with a different code of paint. I’m an old school gamer so I all I needed was a reason for the characters to be doing what their doing in game and I was satisfied I do think lately games forgot that their video games and not movies and as a game can have a story and it be great but if the gameplay is not good it fails as a game regardless of story, but Stellar Blade definitely delivers on being a game that’s fun and hopefully the sequel it’s even more fun than the first one and they add some new move sets to Eve.
I don’t think it needs to have a crazy deep story, but since this a game with a story that’s trying to takes it self seriously, I would have like to see more depth there, especially from our characters as well. Since it’s inspired by Nier, people are naturally going to compare it to one another. There are things that Stellar Blade does very similar to Nier but just watered down. But by the end it definitely feels like they’re trying to branch off into their own thing. And now that a sequel is likely coming I think they should definitely double down on that aspect of the game as well. Of course I’m a very big story person so this means a lot more to me than others. On a gameplay perspective, this game is pretty great, though, and that’s a win in itself.
