I'm a firm believer in the in and out method.
In and out works with the misses too 👍👍🏋️♀️👩🏻🦰
Ha!
You would be surprised how many people breath wrong while working out
When I do that I loose track of reps 😅
Wow,what a break down.Appreciate yall.
Dr Andy Galpin... my old professor. Definitely one of the best out there. 💪🏾
Wow; Dr. Andy Gaplin is LEGIT!
I'm clicking on the video every time I see his face (even if it's something I might not think is interesting / I need to know)!.!.!.
Great information.
Respect to you andrew sir, for doing all this
Great Advice
Amazing topic
Great clip

Appreciate the knowledge and education as always Dr. Huberman. Great book to carry this important topic of breathe work can be found in James Nestor’s book, Breath. Keep learning and growing gentlemen.
I’m gonna forget about this in the gym tomorrow
I don't understand. Please show.
during deadlift sets do you take the breath at lockout or with the weight on the ground?
Please please please can you do a women specific training program with Dr Andy Galpin? Most studies focus on men so much of the research may not be relevant or even correct? Would really welcome an episode on post menopause optimal training - hope you see this comment !!! Dr Stacey Sims also would be an amazing guest!
just go to gym dude
There are no meaningful differences between genders in effective training methods for hypertrophy. Muscle tissue is not different in women.
Run A Search For Thomas Anderson!
How do you breathe during a bicep curl? You inhale before lifting then exhale when lifting and then do nothing when dropping the weight and repeat the cycle? You don’t do nothing when lowering the dumbbell?
A personal trainer at goodlife told me to stop bracing my ASIS and PSIS and to breathe less... How does oxygenation to organs in aerobic capacity adaption happen with breathing less?
In pulling exercise like - pull up,,, breathing pattern???
done
The pressure actually gets low which causes passing out
as a workout junky, I definitely recommend just breathing in from the nose out from the mouth.
No mouth breathing if possible
@@pikachupowers why?
@@hdrkn5247 look up the benefits of nasal breathing .
You could show it easily with a little lets say mimicking lifting weight with your arm!
Holding a breath for more than one heavy rep at a time? lol ok I'm an amateur. I'll take my breath per rep thank you :D
Is there any difference between inhaling through the mouth and inhaling through the nose?
I feel more tension in my core when I inhale through my mouth.
I want to ask the author or get other people's opinions on this matter.
The major difference is that inhaling through the nose allows us to breathe in more oxygen. So I gurss whenever you're lifting you have more air in your lungs to push out each rep and breathe out
I have two question .. first is can we breath through our nose for the brace and second can you visically show us how to brace please
That guy is always arriving to a point but never makes one. Never a solid one atleast,... it's as if he's always speculating and throwing shout outs to scientific studies 😂
I disagree in some points. Yes, brace and 360degree breathing, but holding breath too much creates compensations (talking about lifting).
My 2cents (how I do):
1-5 RM (or last few reps to true failure) : Breathe in, hold breath, do 1 rep, breathe out at last phase (finish) of the rep (or after finishing the rep if it feels safer). Side note: you can still breathe in shallow to belly without losing the brace, and when you really struggle you probably need that extra air as well.
6+ reps : Breathe in on the eccentric (lowering phase), breathe out on the concentric (lifting phase). Generally longer breaths with even tempo.
Personal preferences (and some exercises) may vary, but ideally you breathe IN when the torso is expanding (pull up & row concentric, chin up eccentric, bench press eccentric, shoulder press concentric), and breathe OUT when torso is "shrinking".
I agree with almost everything you said
But,
The "person preference" section is really convoluted...
Do you mean during "pull exercises" (like a row / pull-up) you should breath in during the concentric / out during eccentric; And during "push exercises" (like bench/shoulder presses) you should breath out during the concentric / in during eccentric.?.
Hell yeahh
I don’t get this, do you actually inhale or exhale during the exertion? And is there any difference when doing biceps, abs or push-ups?
The video wasn't very clear
I have recently started Weight training and a lot of times my back and neck nerves get pinched or impinged , does anyone else have this problem?? Like when i try to go to failure in Chest supported rows or lat pulldowns there's a lot of pressure on my neck and back and suddenly some randaom nerve is messed up 😅😅
So can I inhale during the concentric movement?.
correct
exhale slowly when pushing or exerting
is this comparable to the breathing that Jet-fighters do? or what is the difference
Biggest problem I have when doing squats is I get light headed after the very few reps. How do I fix this?
More cardio
It's normal, try doing a longer warm up building up more slowly to your set weight
Hydrate and build up steady
Dude.!.?
Dr. Gaplin just told you exactly what to do / how to do it / gave you options!.!.!.
If you're getting light headed during the rep' it's your breathing - go back and watch this video thoroughly, take notes even!
If your getting light headed right after you rack the weights, you're probably lifting too much (for now) - 2 of the other people in this comment string had great ideas: Do more cardio' - build up your anaerobic threshold, or start with less weight / work your way up slower...
2:18 here he talks about blood pressure and how it can get too high, causing you to pass out.
Hi
hello
Hej!
hello man
Do you mean when I do a bicep curl or ab workout I have to exhale before lifting, hold during the lift and inhale while I lower?
Assuming starting with weight in top position: Inhale+brace > lower > lift > exhale > inhale+brace
@@PhilipWeber thanks, but what about if the weight is in bottom position?
How do I fill my belly with air and around my lower spine? I have lungs in my chest, not in my stomach. I don`t understand. How does the air get there? It goes to the lungs..
diafragm

I heard this twice and still didn’t know what to do. I don’t understand the fascination for using heavy terminology. I’m fairly science driven and I lose interest in most of Huberman podcasts convoluted answers which is a pity cuz I think he has a lot of knowledge
He complicates very simple concepts. 😓
You're American aren't you?
The clavicle thing he's talking about doesn't have anything to do with clavicles or breathing at all afaik... It's squatters bracing the bar and making sure their upper back is rock solid tight before descending.
My varicocele acts up all the time. Sucks
excellent question - but an overly complicated answer without communicating how to properly breath. Dr Huberman had to re-ask the question and answer it himself in order to get confirmation from the guest. What a poor communicator the guest is OR he is just intending to get customers for his method, book, videos, etc by speaking in general terms without specifics. Many guests TEASE viewers that way
Omg just show me how to breathe
This a recipe for hemorrhoids lol
I don't know. This video didn't seem very helpful to me
I think that the title would be better suited to be called how to breathe during 1 to 3 rep max
This clip was not helpful. If I were a beginner, I'd be more confused than ever - and at greater risk of injury because I might think I could safely do 1RM without breathing.
Can someone give fcuking summary
The Huberman Lab… How to overthink every single little thing you do every day.
How to drink water, how to breathe, how to eat, how to take a shower, how to sleep, how to walk, how to… Do stuff
Hahaha there's a balance to be found with everything. A lot of the protocols are simply underutilised and over doing any will be diminishing returns that's for sure
Well, "how to breath" isn't the same thing as "how to breath when lifting weights" because you aren't carrying weights around with you 24/7
Ahahahahah
@@philphil8388Getting good sleep is literally the biggest issue people have in the modern world. Almost no one gets enough sleep (8 hours minimum). I mean that seems like a pretty good topic to help out on. Also eating too. Idk, I guess if you aren't too into what huberman wants to preach (mind you, he backs it up with scientific evidence), you could not watch his podcast.
Funny how many gym bros with zero scientific data are throwing in their anecdotal experience like it compares to the video. Try learning something new children
This guy has clearly never squatted or deadlifted 3 times his body weight
You probably haven't as well
Andrew Huberman does this thing where he seems like he is saying something really impactful, but really he’s just telling you to dart your eyes around like an insane person to stay awake or something. (Actual Huberman advice btw)
