Same. Sumo and Super Saiyan are generic and seem to be aiming for singles popularity rather than meaning something in the context of the work. But other than that, I think he is sonically consistent more often with the different themes that help pick up the slack on the sometimes contradictory lyrics when compared to the theme they are in. I'd bump it up to a light 9.
But Sumo is a banger. I don't care if it's generic as long as I like it, which I did.

The "light', "grey", and "black" concepts to me weren't talking about the material. To me these three acts represented three different stages of his career. The light act is when he was just rising into his fame. This lead to him celebrating in the final track on the act "Sumo". In grey however while there he is still happy with the status he has received he battles losing friends, internal issues, and him realizing not everything was good as it seems. The final dark is when he comes to realize how bad the industry truly is and how much he has loss to achieve success.

I think he’s talking about his depression and being bipolar. The light section is him talking about having problems, or black balloons, over his head, but he is able to push them aside because of his money and fame. Grey is about the realization of these issues, and dark is the acceptance of the issues

In an interview one thing Denzel mentioned that I found interesting was how both sumo and Super Saiyan Superman we're very cocky and braggy and all about materialistic things and switch it up was him quickly switching that narrative as the character he is rapping as has become just like everyone else in the rap game and grows hateful of how it is run and how they glorify drugs and materialistic items. Leading into clout Cobain where he realizes this and later leading into percs where he is very aggressive and angry at the rap Industry and all the fake people in it.

Damn I really feel like the Light, Grey, Dark motives flew over your head. While I can agree on Sumo not fitting as much as the rest, I can wholeheartedly disagree on how you perceive every act. Light isn't as positive as you think because it's not supposed to be, it's to show Denzel at his lightest side, which still is pretty dark hence in the first track 'Welcome to the darkest side of taboo'. He even says in a track that he only feels happy when he's high and he's self conscious about it. Grey is there to see how people feel at the point of seeing their darker side, hence so much subjectivity and a lot of opinionated bars. Dark is basically the whole aggression and depression coming forth and dominating Denzel.
Nyles EXACTLY, the mood of the songs go from light, to grey, to dark. But throughout the theme consists of pain, suicide, depression etc. That was part of the point of having the different sections. Showing how people can put on a mask to hide these emotions as denzel does with the instrumental/mood of the songs (hence why he is wiping the paint off his face in the album cover and at the end of the clout cobain music video which is the last song in the grey section)

At least 2 or 3 songs on this album are just flat out not very ambitious and 10/10 albums don’t have that. If that wasn’t enough, the cohesiveness needed for a 3 act album just wasn’t there and it’s hard to give it any more than say, an 8.5/10 for these two reasons. Still one of my favorite albums of the year but it could have been a bit more cohesive and thought out

I love this album to death, coming from someone who generally listens to -core genres, and the three EP approach clicks a few listens in, the whole project is dark...but his APPROACH changes dramatically.
Light: Escapist, hooky and bubbly. Lyrics based on the ways he unwinds both internally and externally. Sumo's here because it's him being happy about his success.
Gray: Analytical, flowy and precise. Lyrics based on how he sees the world in general, low key assassin jabs aplenty. Clout Cobain's here because it's singsongy despite being darkly introspective. Easily the best part overall.
Dark: Aggressive, technical and loud. Lyrics based on hatred towards the very things he unwinds from and is surrounded by. A catharsis to end the project culminating with a soulshredding boss battle that is 13MT.
On the day I actually release tracks of my own, you best believe 'Zel is getting a very strong influence credit.

I just listened to this album today and Denzel's re my favorite rapper. Everything about this album I love due to his flows the production the lyricism I can see why people love Denzel
Denzel in past interviews has talked about his history with poetry and his enjoyment for it, and that past seriously shows in this album. The abstract concepts discussed in the earlier tracks in a lighter tone as it, of course, devolves into darkness as his mental state changes. I also love how, as the album slowly transitions from song to song and the themes change just as fluidly, the lyrics get more and more on the nose. Small details, but I love them.
Imagine if Ski Mask came through with SUMO feature. I agree with Anthony that the song is pretty generic for Denzel, however I feel like Ski's energy on this track would've made it that much better.
Sumo is track of the year for me so far. But maybe youre right cause Whohasit is runner up

I was a fan of him not making the 3 acts very defined. The subtlety of transitioning to the darkness is more realistic as to how people fall into those negative spaces vs going from super highs to super lows. Furthermore, you don't notice the light side until you've fallen into the dark. Much more interesting than blatantly making happy songs vs darker songs to show versatility for shits and giggles.
With that being said, I agree with him on Sumo.
I still come back and rewatch this review.

I think Light, Grey , and Dark refers more to the subject matter rather than overall sound, as Sumo is a braggadocios track, similar to Cash Maniac
While it is a light side, "darker side of taboo" doesn't carry the same positive connotation as light lol. This is a foreshadowing of the songs on the gray and dark side. I thought the light side was very intriguing and my favorite side imo

I think the lightness differences had more to do with the pace and attitude of the track overall. Aside from Sumo showing up on the first side, as the album went on the tracks went from a more lowkey vibe to harder tracks, finishing with, probably the hardest track, Black Metal Terrorist.
I think sumo was the transition from light to grey, like the initial shock from all the fame and drugs, thats why he said, "Pockets too big, they SUMO!" that's what i got from it though

It’s deeper, I think what he basically means by having taboo in the “light” section but saying “welcome to the darker side” is that even the most «light» or positive sides of Denzel have something dark in them, which is one the themes throughout the album.

The thing about the acts is that even the light side is dark, so when he says this is the darker side of tabboo. He's letting you know that we're starting with the darkest side of the light side. And when you have that mind it transitions very well. The only track ai think doesnt fit in as well is Sumo, but other then that the acts very easy to tell apart. Because in the gray part he starts to look at things not in his own perspective. But in other peoples perspective.
Although the concept wasn’t fully fleshed out and maybe lacked with lyricism making some of it not as accessible. This is easily one of the few records that due to its social commentary maybe could even push to a 9 as the message is not for what is happening right now but messages that are deep rooted from decades ago to the future , what also adds to this is Denzel’s own experiences eg. His late brother , like you said making many of lyrics composed and the delivery even more impactful and current.
I didn't even like denzel curry before I heard this album. Easily 9/10 at least

Kaiser its not boundary pushing, its not good enough, not all the tracks are memorable (case in point, SUMO), and its definetely not been long enough for it to be even close to a classic. sure, its a great album, but nowhere near classic status
