Loyal TrainerRoad racer. Got Omicron and first indication was feeling fatigued the day after a one hour easy ride. So I tried and failed a 4x10 minute threshold ride. Basically I wasn’t recovering from one interval to the next so after two I called it off. The next morning I was very fatigued and felt tired if I went up a stairway. So I guessed Omicron and took five days off the bike. Felt normal after four but took another day because I’m old (63). Then one hour easy. Felt good. Another hour moderate endurance. Felt good. So I went for a 1:30 sweet spot to test my recovery. Completed it but HR was higher than normal and didn’t feel quite right. So I went easy one hour and did not feel right. So two days off. I’m basically taking a careful, diagnostic approach to recovery. Rest, test, assess. YMMV! N=1.

A year after Stem cell transplant (lymphoma) and trying to recover some fitness from that, I got covid. That was 8 weeks ago and I still have covid. I'm realizing that I just need to stop any training and really just rest and drink water. Prior to covid, I was starting to realize how stem cell transplant was a "hard reset" for my body and I needed to start from scratch with mostly zone 2. Business as usual was hurting more than helping.

I thought Amber Pierce's advice was the best I have read or heard anywhere and matched my own experience particularly after Covid. I restarted training (very easy) while the virus was still kind of hanging around (slight cough) and I went backwards in my recovery. Take it slowly in every sense!

Good info right now. Not sickness but I've been dealing with some physical issues I'm trying to come back from.

That advice of checking in with your body and being patient/kind to yourself when getting back into training can DEFINITELY apply to returning from injury as well!

@@TrainerRoad Thanks, I just wish my body was giving me better signs that I was ready to return. My last good ride was Christmas eve. Still going through the process of Drs and other fun stuff.

Hi new trainerroad member/user here since Christmas last year. Great encouraging video and really puts the right things into perspective for someone like me who just got covid 4 days ago and was wondering when can i get back to proper training again and how long do i need to be off the bike or trainer... listening to your body and being honest to yourself though simple as it sounds is really gold advice but the most difficult part is 'being ok with it' or state of 'acceptance' i guess... did my low intensity zone 2 ride on the trainer today for 45 mins and felt ok not my usual self... and i knew i shouldn't push it. Will see how i feel again tomorrow... maybe skip a day... and do a another zone 2 the following day to see how i feel again... and take it from there... probably gonna get dropped on my next bunch ride LOL but i guess i have to deal with it and build up again over time but surely... would other forms of exercises or body conditioning work help to at least retain some fitness you might otherwise lose over 1-2 weeks of not cycling at your usual intensity or volumes? thanks guys and keep up the great podcasts and content.

Regarding 'other forms of exercise' to help out during your recovery; of course! ***As long as you're medically cleared and ready for it, incorporating more core work and strength training during this time when you're riding a lower volume is a great idea, as long as your comprehensive goal is still focused on your recovery and wellness. Take care of yourself!

This is just what I needed to hear. I’ve been sick for the past 3 days with the flu. I was supposed to do my first actual race today. But unfortunately I’m still sick. It’s highly frustrating to not be able to do what you think you can do. But I’m trying to take it one day at a time. I was supposed to start the specialty phase of the training plan on Monday. But would you recommend pushing that off a week or two an do an east half hour to hour sweet spot or endurance work out?

Hey Chris, this is a great use for time-off annotations, where adding the time you've taken away for being sick will result in adaptations to your future workouts to ease you back into training appropriately. :)

    Hi
I am a cyclist. And the last 4 weeks it was really hard. I came down with the flue and covid the new Omicron and it kicked my butt. I thought I was going too die.
I lost mussel mass in my legs and arms I dropped down to 165lbs . I feel like I am a 90 year old guy. .
I test nagitive 3 days ago covid. Now I am trying to get my body back into Cycling. And it's hard . I road 9 miles today at a slow pace just to get back on my bike. ..I felt like I did 60 miles .
Looking for good advice . I use to ride 100miles no problem. 4 weeks ago.

Our advice is: take care of yourself, be patient, nourish yourself, and of course seek medical advice if you feel something is amiss. Get well soon!
