Been off the bike 9 weeks and counting, from a bad crash. Was on crutches 6 weeks and my leg visibly atrophied. But the muscle is already coming back, just from walking and light daily strength work. The body clearly doesn’t forget what it once had and can renew it rapidly

Glad to hear you're recovering well, Lane! Heal well, and here's hoping you can get back on the bike soon!

syncytia...from syncytium, first used in 1876 to describe a histologic structure where the cells are fused, as you describe for muscle. It may be possible to regain former fitness, but I'm finding its sure not easy.

One question I have is, is hard training cumulative season on season (I.e I build from 220 ftp to 280 in one season, take an off season, then can I expect I build from say 260 quickly back to 280 but the expect to build on to 300+ with the same level of training stress...or do I need to increase training stress to push on from 280? - this podcast seems to suggest there is potential for season on season gains?

Season to season gains are absolutely possible, even after a hiatus, however the exact number to reach for is completely independent upon the duration of the off-season, training volume, training history, etc. Its best to just enjoy the process of making gains and see how far you can take it! :)
