Years later, this is exactly what I needed to watch today.

Thank you for this video. I started cycling later in life seriously for fitness and health ,not for competition . I am a 51 year old male. When I turned 45 I was 250 lbs, unhealthy to the point my doctor wanted to put me on medications for Type 2 diabetes, for blood pressure, plus an anti-depressant. I considered myself healthy in my younger years. I served in the Marines, I lifted weights on and off and regularly got complimented on my physique. When my doctor suggested these medications to control the symptoms that a typical western diet ends up punishing you later in life with . My first thought was what can I do to change the way I was living. I didn't want to throw medicines at the problem. I told her how about if I change my lifestyle, from what I ate and take up some aerobic exercises. I initially started jogging. within a week I had horrible pain in my left knee, it ended up being arthritic. I started riding the crappy bike I had and within days I noticed the pain was almost gone but tolerable. At that moment I think I was bit with the cycling bug. My next physical the following year, I had lost 30 lbs. I was vegetarian at this point but not taking it to seriously. The next year I lost another 30 lbs. At this point I had watched a few Durianrider videos on CZcams and decided to go vegan. I bought an entry level road bike (Trek ALR 5) and increased my miles. Now 4 years later I am at 165 lbs, my total cholesterol level is never above 150, and I take no medication at all.The pain in knee has never resurfaced and the depression is long gone.I do have my down days but riding my bike always gets me out of that glut. I live in the hilly state of Florida, so all my riding is outside. I do not have much experience on trainers.
I came across your channel rather recently and even though I am not a competitive cyclist, my cycling friends might say differently, I have found your videos informative. Particularly this one. When I heard you mention tightness in the hamstring and saddle height and the advice you offered that one hit home. My right hamstring is tighter than my left, and for quite a while I was making adjustments to my bike to compensate for it. No position ever seemed right. I do stretch movements with the bands I also foam roll and lift weight 2-3 times a week, usually low weight and higher reps. It has taken a while but I have seen the improvements in my flexibility and in increased comfort on my bike. I am more consciously aware of my posture when I am sitting and standing. Thank you for this information. Since I got my road bike and a hybrid Trek bike in the last 4 years,I have put over 30000 miles on them. My doctor is quite impressed and every year she tells me to keep doing what I am doing . She uses my situation as a success story that she doesn't see to much in her line of work. I am looking forward to rest of my life as a vegan cyclist and what future rides and locations have in store for me. Thank you again and forgive the long rant. Cycling has saved my life and made it worth living. By the way I think Chad has the best hair style. HAHA!

This comment needs to be pinned.
Really shows just how great cycling can be.

After a long break from the bike I ride for 30 days straight. No structure just ride. I am always fitter on day 30 and ready for structure. I make sure I tell my mates what I’m doing so I’m accountable. Works a treat for me.

Coming from a guy that took off 8 years (cat2 rider) I started back last winter and have regained an incredible amount of fitness. I set a goal for a t shirt ride that i did a couple of weeks ago and finished in the top 10 riders with over 1,000 riders. I still am not where I once was and maybe never will be but i am having fun. My next goal is the DK200 if i can win the registration lottery. The first two minutes of this video is spot on.

Yeah it's pretty easy to get back a big chunk of your fitness. I missed a good 3 years of riding and after a few months I was back to beating my PR's. But you did say the keyword there, having fun that's what cycling is all about to me.

For me it’s habit, habit, habit. If I start “small” and focus on simply creating a new habit, once the habit is in place, building upon that becomes much more achievable.

The idea of setting a lofty goal in the future that you train towards is called an "anchor event." It's a good idea if you're feeling stuck doing the same old thing. It should be something that can be achieved and motivates you to get out and train!

Hey, I had a knee imbalance that was causing pain for when I was racing 20 years ago and also for the last few years since my return. I'd just accepted that it was just something I had to put up with but since doing the pedaling drills on Trainerroad stopping my knee's from coming inwards towards the top tube on the upstroke the pain has pretty much gone. Thanks guys!

You guys were talking about hip strengthening etc, you need to check out 7 way hips, (Ryan Flaherty has a good video on it.) Killer exercise for cycles, and all athletes.
