[4K] Octopath Traveler: PC vs Switch Graphics Comparison - 60fps and 4K Unleashed!
Vložit
- čas přidán 7. 06. 2019
- The PC release of Octopath unleashes the full potential of Square Enix and Acquire's unique JRPG. Armed with a full settings menu, this is the first time we've seen the game pushed to 60fps - and in doing so, sidestepping the frame-pacing issue on Switch. Tom covers the details.

This game has one of the best soundtracks I've ever heard
i been listening to the soundtrack for almost a year and still find it exhilarating
*They who govern reason*
But somehow RDR2 won the award for best music at the game awards 🙃 like wtf...
Bravely defaults soundtrack is far better
@@Hetsu.. YES, OMFG YES. Bravely Default soundtrack is memorable, while Octopath is more remeniscent of in the moment. Both great, Bravely is better in the music department.
Final Fantasy VI in this style would be absolutely amazing.
Octopath with gameplay, story, and characters like FF6 would also be amazing.
Chrono Trigger too...
Why did you make me need to change my pants?! What did I do to you?
I love the style but I'd have to disagree. The style they use in this game just makes it way too hard to tell where you're going half the time.
I agree, though I feel FFVI still holds up much better than the PS1 games, but I would love to see a full 3d remake or made in this engine with updated sprites that look better than the mobile versions.
Loved this game on my Switch, glad more people get a chance to play it!
we need more people like you
the real hero
"Upcoming" Yoshi for Switch? That game already came out in March.
No, there's going to be a new Yoshi game soon, codename "Tax Evasion."
Who cares? That’s not what this video is about. That’s all you got out of this whole review?
@@amoschiang7242 this is a channel dedicated to nit-picking. They count pixels and frame timing, and we're going to fact check their writing.
Plot Twist: Digital Foundry made this video months ago, and the embargo just lifted.
@@Owlero lmao Honestly wouldn't be surprised. However they did mention E3 or was that in the Script dun dun DUUUNN! xD
I have a friend working on the title. He mentioned once that the team was able to push the frame rate on Switch up to North 50fps before decided to put a cap on it (maybe it's not stable enough).
One benefit of using UE4 is that it uses TrueType fonts with OpenType features. With that it's able to render text correctly and beautifully across multiple resolution. I think it also uses distant field font sprite as well.
That's interesting. I think they should have made a small sacrifice or two for that 60 or given us the option to uncap like in KH3. Either way loved this game
Also if you do read my comment tell your friend that some random internet stranger is pretty grateful for that friend of yours to go through the shitty working industry for gaming to give us this game that is definitely one of my favorites
@@regalsteel7074 Well I don't know what trade-off they have to pay if they really want the frame rate. And given that this is small developer we are talking about (not a huge development division at SE like KH3), my guess is they don't want to spend much on different configurations that ends up hurting every settings they provide.
Also we are talking about UE version that does not officially support Nintendo Switch here (that support was added much later after Fortnite is released I believe). Probably the engine stability at the time they work on this title might not be stellar. It's probably quite challenging already to push the game out as a release.
PS. I've heard that the development of this PC version is made by a different team than the original, which is currently focusing on the mobile 'Gacha' game of the series now.
Oh and, if you go to Japan, you might want to pay a visit to their offices. Though I'm pretty sure they won't let you in if you don't have any business with them.
But hey taking a photo with a sign in front of that office might be cool too don't you think lol :D.
PS. Acquire is at Akihabara, Square Enix is at Shinjuku. I've been to both office, but never enter any of them as I don't have any business with any lol (I do have friends working at both places though).
PhysX is used as default middleware for all physics in UnrealEngine. I don't think the devs went for overkill so much as it was just the tool that came in the box.
First time here on digital foundry?
A lot of what they say is filler best to let the video do the talking.
Thanks Nvidia...
@@batmangovno it's actually very good. A lot of games use it and it doesn't need to be GPU-accelerated. Witcher 3 used it, too -- all done on the CPU.
@@batmangovno how do Unreal Engine games on AMD work??
@@nowonmetube Not as well as on Nvidia. No idea why.
I hope this HD2D thing takes off. Itd be cool to see more games like this
I'm here from the future to tell you that it is indeed starting to take off, ;)
Porting the game was likely very straightforward thanks to Unreal, and that PC version sure looks really nice. I won't double dip due to the pretty steep pricing, but I'd still recommend playing it.
I got bored before I finished chapter 1 for every character... the story is so boring so far. I love games like FF but this I couldn't bring myself to continue.
Yeah, Square has a tendency to be on the steep side of the pricing. This game could have easily been only $40. Plus Square is always slow to drop the price.
@@Skylancer727 isn't it weird that FF VII and IX rarely gets a price drop in a special sale?
@@cliffturbo2146 Most popular FF games, Square wants to keep milking them. Gotta laugh when you see FF 13 on the cover of the sales though. 😉
@@Skylancer727 At least FF VIII gets some special sale. It's just that I got FF VII already to PS1, but I wanted to start from scratch and record the game on PC. I just hope, there will be summer sale soon on Steam...
We can now Mod Octopath. I repeat, we can now Mod Octopath. This is the best timeline
Andrew Kos you think people will remake other RPG’s using it?
CalvinCrack definitely
@@CalvinCrack 100% and I can't wait
I’d so want to see a Game of Thrones RPG with this engine
We can also get the game for free now, no need to pay! Rejoice!
Many of the comparisons in this video are presented in a somewhat misleading way. When discussing the particles, wouldn't it be more accurate to say that the PC version has more particles added, than saying the Switch version has particles "reduced?" The Switch version isn't a port. It's the original version, and shouldn't be portrayed as a "step backward" from the PC version. The PC version is enhanced over the Switch version.
THIS
Shh...Just let the definitive version shower ever so slowly over you...
(You lost this round)
The game runs on Unreal Engine so IMO it's a PC developed game ported to Switch. We're only just now allowed to play the actual primary version of the game.
@@Grimspoon Wouldn't that make almost all console games ports then?
Tbh doesn't matter you can look at it either way
Guess that's why the Switch version ran at 30 pfs then.
Lots of effects used were actually paired back to make it run on the machine better. Game still looks good on both platforms though.
*pared
@@MysteryD no
The Switch version actually can run at 60 fps.
@@NatalieRath Have yet to see that without modding the console or code within the game to an unnatural/unstable state. I've only seen it once and it's pointless. SE did a PHENOMENAL JOB on the PC port.
@@dirozx Yes. He is correct. The phrase is "pared". You are wrong. He is correct. You have wrongly corrected someone. Nevermind, you are subbed to Tobuscus... how embarrassing...
Whether on Switch or PC, if you love old-school JRPGs, you should give Octopath Traveler a go.
EDIT: Or Stadia or Xbox.
Or Stadia
An additional comparison would be nice: Octopath Traveler on Switch undocked vs. PC handhelds (GPD Win 2, Smach Z)
Octopath Traveler was awesome on the Switch! I'm glad it's on PC as well now.
2:52 WHat was that voice crack hahahahah
Loved the video though, great work!
3:35 yoshi has already released!
ahah i was coming down to comment the exact same...
Great. Another one of these useless comment that have nothing to do with what the video review is even about.
@@amoschiang7242 well, at least they talk about the video. You just nag on every comment.
Is the rumble feature from switch there when using a controller? That was pretty neat.
This is one game that would look amazing with full ray tracing support.
Literally every part of the lighting would have to be redone but yeah it would be super cool
Sounds like a good port. Wondering howv this runs on a GPD WIN2
Holy crap!!! Didnt know it came out on PC, it took me 70 hrs to complete the whole game, i think i can play another 70+ hrs on PC

This game would be great for PC if the regional pricing for this game wasn't so absurdly high. In some countries, you have to pay more than double what they would normally pay for a standard $60 USD game. On top of that it also has Denuvo DRM.
PC games go down in price really fast though, thats one of the benefits of PC gaming
@@toad8840 No - cracked games have pretty much the same FPS....and it also doesn't destroy SSDs (incase anyone believes that one too)
I’m actually happy it has Denuvo or everyone would just pirate it anyway.
Well, it's on PC after all. You can always download it for free.
MORE THAN TRIPLE here in India.

"In the upcoming Yoshi for Switch"? What? That's already out for a long time :D 3:35
Oops.
There's another one coming up called "Tax Evasion."
great video. may have to try this out on pc
Damn, this game looks amazing
The frame pacing in the Switch version is a nightmare. I wish they'd have patched that. I can't believe they released the game knowing it suffered from frame pacing.
It really wasn't that bad. To everyone reading, don't listen to this clown. It happened every so often when walking through cities that's it, battle too but not noticeable
@@regalsteel7074 Look how defensive you got, you don't have to polish a turd you know.
Could i play this on my surface go tablet ? How about controller support ?
Guys what about the recent Nvidia driver with the integer scaling capability ? does it solve the textures blurriness on higher resolutions ?
I was sold just seeing this at 60 fps.
OMG...EVERY. SINGLE. ACTION. PERFORMED is like heroin for the eyes. Prepare for itching and withdrawls with that 1080p/60fps goodness.
Mmm....... heroin..
@Haste I couldn't even imagine 120 LMAO. Prob overkill for this title as 60 looks beyond perfect w/ no stutters.
And the resolution
@@LuciferDSatan-vn8gl *2160p/60 :P
@Haste sadly uncapping the frame-rate makes your companions bug out.
When it's on sale on Steam I'll get it. Already have it on Switch - but I would love to see it in 4K on my TV.
Has anyone looked at the load times EXITING battles from Octo 1 vs Octo 2 on switch? I am counting a consistent 3 seconds on Part II.
This game is the SaGa Frontier succesor I never knew I needed. Even the combat has the same feel.
Moravia90s it’s actually a lot like Live-a-live which sadly never left japan
@@geoffreychauvin1474 People keep making the Live-a-live comparison, it's very surface level though.
There are 8 characters with their own story. That's about it. The plot execution, gameplay, world design, etc. is much more like SaGa.
Now we're getting a remake!!!
A fair comparison.
Saying that. I never thought about performance when I played the game.
sometimes it slows down in heavy scenes
@@teacherfromthejungles6671 I honestly didn't notice.

Do "Journey" next!
I really thought this was done on Yuzu for a moment (the switch emulator)
I do wish square would have the menus on the switch run at a native 1080p though
I believe they do actually?
Nice! Can't wait to get it :D
Does the switch version have physx as well?
Alright I just picked it up. Im gonna play it after work. Ill check back in once I get a feel for the game.
So, are we moving from switch to ps5 version for octopath traveler 2? I want to lay down like a fatty with my switch, but I also want the best graphical experience.
But what about HD-Rumble? Octopath was the game that convinced me of its possibilities on switch, is it in the PC version?
If you were convinced with hd rumble on octopath, then you must’ve not played Kirby star allies. There’s one post game level in that game that truly will surprise you if you haven’t played or bought star allies.
Tirex367 the rumble was the only thing that was weird for me. It felt so weird. It was different to the regular rumble it was just weird
what is the space game @ 3:27?
Just watching this to see what i'm missing out on with the switch version before I make my decision.
Great stuff!
Lower shadow quality, frame rate, res, less particle effects. Sounds like a lot but doesn't look too different. I can live with the differences. Tbh I do prefer the higher blurry effects on Switch on edges I forgot what it was called like an idiot but I remember it being a simple term. Either way I hope that both PC and Switch users can get along and celebrate the game because truly it is amazing, underrated in my opinion. But now with PC the fanbase can grow bigger so let's all be friends
Man, I cant wait for that Yoshi game on Switch
While not portable to the level where you could leave your house, at least as far as latency is concerned. You can easily run your PC games on a tablet, or phone in your homes 5g wifi network with no real noticeable latency issues. Rather there is latency because its an encoded video but its low enough to be almost indistinguishable from say running on a high end TV. I know a lot of people like to play switch laying down on a couch or in a bed, that was my primary use of portable mode.
Sometimes i'll plop on the couch and play something like Sekiro on my galaxy S8 active and a DS4 phone clip. Feels good~
Still baffled that the Switch docked runs Mario Kart 8 at 1080p and 60fps but can't run this past 720/30.
Wow, would've imagined it would use a little more CPU than that. Nice port.
Good analysis Tom!
My i7 6700k @4.2 doesn't go up past 30c
Holy crap....I had no clue OT was coming to PC. Day made. :)
Coming...it came out yesterday.
Well, it is not Nintendo IP after all
Already put in to many hours on the Switch to start all over on PC.
That's why I haven't bought FF15 for PC, because I have almost 200 hours on the PS4. No way I'm doing all over again.
@@Fendera1 Same here.
Why tho?
@@Fendera1 I luckily found FF 15 on sale for under $30 on Steam... Backlogged LOL
@@LuciferDSatan-vn8gl I really enjoyed it for what it was, even with the flaws.
That terrible sprite scaling is fixed?! I was decided to not get it again, but now I'm reconsidering.
Yoshi already released
It looks like a comparison between 2 consoles. What about control customization, M/K, ultrawide resolutions, 144hz?
I don't have an Ultra wide so I don't know about that. The controls for mouse, keyboard and Controller are fully customizable in the settings menus.
No 21:9, 60fps locked. Full customization for controller and kb/m.

Brilliant game but the framepacing on Switch did my head in. It stutters all over the place. Still looked great though...
This is gonna sound stupid but the extra blurriness in the Switch version, what with the changing focus of the camera, make this game look even better to me. It has that old feel, kind of like how Paper Mario felt but with a very different style.
I wonder how it will work/perform with proton. Probably not gonna buy it twice though unless it goes on a good sale.
KingEdgeHead well it is so much better to play this game everywhere. So no buy from my side as well.
Does anyone know how to reduce the depth of field, but not disable it
It is a great game.
Grinding on a portable system though makes it a great Switch game.
Wish we could use our switch save on pc and vice versa. That would be killer. Buying the same game twice though.....
@@arechikitsune I am kind of surprised that they didn't add that feature. I would buy it again if they did.
There's always, always a defensive switch owner in the comments
@@kylerclarke2689 Who is being defensive?
@@kylerclarke2689 I agree with you but no one is "defending" the Switch here.
If you think you like classic JRPGs... If you think FFVI and Chrono Trigger are perfection.. you NEED to play this game. The music alone is absolute perfection.
Can’t wait for mods and console commands.
9:01 what about surface go? also some "gaming" pocket tablet/laptop thingys, the switch is probably greatly outperformed by current gen phones already
Doesn't every Unreal game from pretty much UE3 and up have PhysX libraries just as part of the engine?
Pretty sure that's just how it is.
Ahhh we really need a pokemon game like this!!!
I wonder if this would run well on a surface tablet
Prolly, on low
Maybe just maybe, we be able to get a remake of Final Fantasy 3 (6 in Japan) in this style, which would make it insane! IMO FF3, is ranked #2, and that is a hard place to put it since I had to juggle its position with FF7.
Will you make a benchmark with *integrated GPUs* (e.g. Intel HD 520) on this?
I know it's unusual for the channel, but in this case it's clear that everything else can run it no problem. And it would be interesting considering the Switch clearly is more powerful than Intels "APUs".
Well, I don't know how powerful the HD 520 is but the new UHD Graphics 630 in the new 9th Gen lineup is with a maximum performance of 423.2 Gflops in FP32 computing actually around 1/8 more powerful than the switch in docked mode. The reason why it performs worse in most cases is because most pc users use a resolution way above the one of the switch and the applications are most times also more demanding.
But on 720p or less like the switch in many cases, it should perform better.
However, if the switch uses the 1GHz clock of the Tegra X1 chip, it would be slightly more powerful. Sadly, the switch can only maintain this speed for a few seconds without overheating. They boost it to that number only for loading times anyways
Even 400 series can run it
If 4K runs that easily, might as well bump it up to 8K lol
Will eventually check this game out in the future!
True. There are people running bf3 in 8k 60fps already. Of course bf3 is very easy to run
The main menu background will be fairly easy to fix with just recording a 4K footage of the same nature and replacing the video, I suppose.
Welp, there goes this month's bonus.
Honestly other than the resolution bump the switch version doesn't really look much worse. Even the high/low comparison I could barely tell the difference other then the shadow pop-in.
I even think the colours and depth of field looks better on the Switch.
naah man Switch is so blurry and the frame rate... Glad it's on PC. 30fps makes me actual nauseous and gives me migraines. As a kid I constantly got sick and never really knew why, 30FPS games were the problem soon as I started playing PC at 60fps I don't get headaches but when I play my PS4 for to long. I hope PS5 everything is 60fps.
Switch version looked like garbage next to PC version, docked and handheld. First hand account.
I think Switch owners like to get all huffy over this shit.
you need to have your vision checked if you can look at 03:58 and the clips shown there and not think the Switch "look much worse" as there is a huge difference in quality.
@@lucasromerova6150 I feel bad for you then. Being unable to see movies must be sad.
does anyone experience lag when in main menu settings?
So weird how much they say step down, when they can say step up
Great video! Could you make a new video wih Yuzu's version aswell? Regards.
"Armed with a full settings menu", yeah as it should be? Why is that adressed in the description?
@@ratmicc who would think that though? No console game has a settings menu with graphic options.
@@postscriptum8142 as in, the video itself is a comparison between pc and switch, so its emphasising that the pc's graphics setting is much more detailed than the switch's? idk man lol
I'm glad gameplay didn't change. Nothing is worse than owning the original copy of the game, then finding out the new game has more than you have.
3:36 UPCOMING!?
That’s how little Tom cared
Yes, Japanese Full Supported language. I love it!
I had no idea high quality pixels were a thing.
Picking up a Switch in the next few weeks, and Octopath Traveler is one of the games on my 'must buy' list. Been wanting to play it for some time.
I love the switch, but despite it's portability, (as a 5'6" 130lb male) it's still to cumbersome. It practically requires a backpack, or a large jacket pocket (if you remove the joy cons) in order to transport it.
I'm shocked no one mentions Steam Link in these comparisons... For things like visual novels and a turn based RPG like this, Steam Link is indispensable. And all it requires is a PC to run steam, good internet connection for streaming, and a phone capable of using the Steam Link App from the play store.
While it's plenty possible to use this strictly via Wi-Fi... with unlimited 4G data (and soon 5g), you'd have very little issues playing this on the go as well. Steam Controllers supposedly work as well, though I can't say I have tested it; my old moga pro seems to work fine though.
Just make sure your mobile provider doesn't have a crazy low bottleneck on data. Streaming games certainly does use a lot of data.
Won some money playing the slots and then I purchased the game with said winnings for my husband. He was talking about it since it came out and his eyes lit up like a Christmas tree when I got it. Turn based games are his favorite.
The depth-of-field is much more easy on the eyes on PC!
You can also turn it off.
@@ChairyCrasher Thank god - I actually didn't buy it on Switch because of the DoF....just made my eyes feel weird.
So what about 21:9 and >60 fps?
Enjoy 2 chapters in 4k/60 then experience the highest quality boredom as you grind grind grind grind grind (in 4k/60) until you stop playing.
Haven't had to grind yet and I'm halfway through everyone's third chapter.
Up until the true ending, I didn't grind a single second in this game. If you need to grind during the main game, then you're just bad... (Coming from someone who never played a JRPG game before Octopath)
I love octopath, i hate most games very few speak to me... every story had something that made me reflect. only change id have added, some legit romance would be okay just beyond the level of zeph but not too much more then that. The storys are awesome
I'll wait for the HD Remake.
All this time I thought that the weird sprite scaling was on purpose. Guess not.
next video: Octopath Traveler with Ray Tracing
Cool minor differences I would say. I personally won't double dip, especially because I play it lying in my bed, but it is good that other people can play it!
No 21:9 information unfortunately.
Would love to know that too
@@karma_decay From what I can tell no 21:9 right now.
I wonder if anybody would be willing to make a demake of this game on SNES
Y tho .-.
I massively enjoyed this game on the Switch, for PC users only I highly recommend this - it's an amazing game.
Don't know the portability really made this game for me
Still looks stunning whatever you're playing it on. Shows how certain art styles can somewhat transcend resolution. An excellent title which I'm glad can now be enjoyed by PC players.
It might be an unpopular oppinion but I actually feel more pleasant the lower res version of the game. This 4k rendering reminds me somehow to increase the resolution in old PSX games by emulation and I don't think the result is as harmonious
as in the Switch version.
60€ on steam, a bit pricey but the moment it gets on sale, I will buy it
It will most likely cost 30 after 2 months and 10 after a year
Question is why only release on PC?
This is a clear money maker, I played and enjoyed it on the switch and its a game that would do well on all remaining platforms, strange why SQE didnt.
The same question applies to Kingdom Hearts series. Why is there no pc version? Damn SE!
