I THINK YOUNARE WONDERFUL THE MAGEFIER IS SUPER THOUGHTFUL HUGS
Ill be using the magnifier for 2021. I like it.
Bing the peppers in before not after they are exposed to frost. One out of six survived exposer to a mild frost.
Another thing to use in the bottom of the pots is basket type coffee filters. The larger ones fit 1 gallon pots perfectly.
I live in zone 4. I brought in 12 plants, 2 from the garden and 10 from my greenhouse. Only the 2 from the garden managed the shock of being brought in as they had started dormancy. One of those ended up dying off. It didn't like having its leaves picked off after I brought it in the house mid October. So I had one plant out of 12 survive.
All the ones from the greenhouse were still trying to produce even though I had been gradually cutting back on water, pruning them back and picking off blossoms for over a month. I do think that dormancy is the key to success. Next year I will pot them up and try to find a cool, shadier spot that won't freeze. Our temperature extremes are a factor here. I need them inside for 5 - 7 months.
Good luck and thanks for the info.

I love overwintering peppers. I did last year and they took off more than doubled in size. The peppers i am planting back outside this spring will be their 3rd year 😊 and Gary love the new zoom affect on your videos this year!!!
Followed your advice and everything looks great. I have one Arroz con Pollo leafing out and another staying green but no leaves. I’ve found them notoriously ornery. And slow. I’m very excited! The Ozark Giants, Quadrato d’Asti, Sugar Rush Peach and poblanos are doing great!
Total confidence builder. Thank you. I brought in a jumbo jalapeno plant, first time ever. It seems to be keeping up with yours. I'll quit be a helicopter plant parent. :)
What a great video. Exactly what I needed to know. Thank you!
That's my goal. Good luck.

Cool peppers 👍
Hello.nice to watching you video and thank you for share.
Glad to share
Hi I'm extremely glad you're replying to comments and super relief to find you. Last year was my 1st year as a beginner planter, I raised a baby bell pepper plant 🫑from 3 inches to a 2.5 ft plant. I did it all in a pot and it was very successful.
I just found out that I can overwinter the plant, sought out to watch CZcams videos and did the following:
1. Cut ALL the leaves off
2. Prune to the Y shape
3. Change pot, change to new soil, put perlite cover over it.
4. Put it near the EAST side window [big mistake, should be in a cool, dark place]
Now, the tips of where I cut the stem is turning brown then slowly to black . I cried in the inside. I don't know what is going on and I tried to read and looked online to see if anyone knows anything about it, but came back empty.
Do you know have any advice for me?
So overwintering is tough. Of those plants in the video like 1/3 died. The stem may die back but if the root system survives and the stem is at least alive just above the soil, it will grow again. It may leaf a bit in the house as it is warm. So nothing you did is wrong but they dont always make it. I would also start indoor peppers early and let them grow nicely indoors if you have tried that. Sometimes that is easier but I would refer you to my see starting videos. Good luck.

I used to overwinter the c. Chinese peppers because they took so long to grow. It gives you a big head-start next year. You are going to have so many scorpion and habs!
Good to know. I think they will be really productive.

You and Fraser Valley Rose Farm are me go tos! Thank you@
Didn't cut my ghost pepper back hard enough, I guess. It is flowering with lots of branching.
Do I pour the light on, feed and see what happens? It certainly isn't dormant!
Next year I wont be reluctant to knock the soil off the root ball. Thx for the sand tip.
Sweet zoom effect 🎉
Wish I would have seen your other videos especially regarding bugs. I'm "dealing" with that now. Also glad you showed a few that aren't doing so good, as I have a few that have done the same. Please have a video on how to re-plant after over wintering!. Thank you or a great video.
Ill put it on my list. Good luck this year

Yes. I have 8 super hot varieties that I overwintered in the basement. They had about a foot of long spindly growth with some flowering. Should I cut all this weak growth back to where I pruned it in fall and repot in my 5gal buckets? Zone 5b WI.
I sure wish I had indoor space to have overwintered my peppers. They were very healthy, very productive plants. Now that you've shown us how far back to trim them (other video) and how to keep them indoors, maybe I can incorporate overwintering at least a few of them into future plans. I always enjoy all of your videos, and appreciate you sharing your knowledge and tips. Best wishes for you and your loved ones always.
I think it worth trying a few. I am setting up some cold frames to to help overwinter next year.

Hi, I missed your videos, I will put the sand on top. Thanks.
It helps.

at what Indoor temperature would you keep the pepper plants at and Is the sand your using play sand or Is there a special type of sand you would use
Thank you Gary, great information!!! I have saved this video and will try it next fall. I am also setting up my grow area for the near future (and of course watching your videos on that). For your zone when will start peeper seeds indoors, and when will you slowly acclimate, and transplant it outdoors (I presume around mid-May)?
Most of mine will go out late april and early may. And this year I am taking them out as soon as the germinate for like 15 minutes a couple times a week. Starting acclimation early. Indoor peppers are started typically around mid Feb.
THANK YOU
Yep
I have several bell/ sweet peppers overwintering for the first time! Super excited to see what comes from them🙌🏻
First time for me too -got 4 different kinds but forgot to label them which kind except the Hot Banana. Agree, it’s exciting to see them with their tiny leaves!
@@bycfr08 lol I forgot to label mine too😂
How did your over wintering peppers produce in the garden this summer?
@@buckbeaksgarden761 at first they seemed great then two plants died of thirst😂😂🤦♀️ same thing happened with the survivor, I had so much going on with my starts. Next time I will try to put them somewhere I won’t forget and maybe not cut them back? I will definitely try again. This year I waited too long and the frost got them🤦♀️😩

Hello Gary! How did these do? Did the remaining pepper plants survive in 2021? I am limited in space so unsure of this is worth it. How quickly did they start fruiting? Would love to see a follow up video.
Overwintering a Jalapeno and a Cayenne. 1st trying this so very interested in how they will do in the 2nd growing season. I will plant them next to new starts in spring to see how they compare.
Great experiment.

Very helpful! Should I be plucking off flower buds? I hope you will show how these do throughout the winter so I can compare.
I had the same question. Some of my hot peppers are starting to flower
QUESTION: I have 8 peppers in grow bags. I’m in zone 9 B and want to overwinter them on my covered patio. I do not have enough light inside from my windows. My plan is just to prune and move the grow bags so they’re protected from frost. I do have a pepper i overwintered in my raised bed. I kept it covered through the frost. The plant is green but it didn’t come out of dormancy all summer. Any thoughts or advice appreciated!!
how Gary, love your channel and love watching your videos. they are my inspiration of my awesome gardening this season. i watched them while having lunch at work. im starting to overwinter 3-4 types of peppers including my fav Bell Peppers here in Toronto, 🇨🇦. Ive heard about putting some sand on top of the potting mix soil to messed up the gnats. Why kind of sand is it? Can I buy them from Home Depot or local garden center. Thanks Gary and hoping to hear back from you soon.
Thanks so much! So glad your garden did well. Just plain old play sand works.

Didn’t even know you could do this. Is the fruit production the same in the second year? Also I’m from Hammonton, nice to see another South Jersey guy doing well! Merry Christmas to you and yours, Gary.
It is better. Peppers are basically woody shrubs and keep growing if no frost and cold comes. Merry Xmas.

Yeah i had some evil green bugs trying to take it slug like. I never had any bug problems with peppy out doors when she came in she was great. Then suddenly these green bugs were horrid. I had to cut off all her beauty. She is doing well has a bloom on her. I have 3 other smaller ones. All are well. Blessings brother
Hello until this year I never even knew you could save peppers but my question is does this only work for chilli peppers or can you do with sweet peppers too? Thank you for sharing your home and your knowledge 🇨🇦🎄✌️🥕
Yep. Any pepper can be overwintered. Glad to share.

I've heard hot peppers take longer to fruit so they would be more of a candidate for overwintering than bells.
I cleaned off my strawberry plant roots with a water and peroxide solution, helped kill the bugs on the roots and had a little rot from container (then I had transferred to the ground) but that might be a good way to clean off the soil on peppers too get off any bugs. I just dipped the soil clod into water/peroxide solution till the roots were cleaned and then replanted
That would work. I would have to figure out the concentration but great idea.

What a great tip. Whatnus the ratio you used?
Hey, nice informative vid. I hope you have those pronunciations down pat by now :) I'm in north Jersey and plan to overwinter a few peppers, eggplants, & even a couple to tomato plants. Hopefully they'll do ok in my south facing kitchen, which has a big glass door. Question: the sand you use, is it the one you can buy at Home Depot & Lowes? Thanks
Still working on them Lol

I live in an area that gets freezing temps maybe 5 times a year during the day. Is there anything wrong with following the re-potting and pruning advice and maybe leave the plants outdoors on my patio during the day to take advantage of the sunshine then transfer them into my garage at night if it looks like temps gonna get below 45F? Thanks for all the great videos. They are extremely helpful.
I think that would work just fine actually

@@THERUSTEDGARDEN I transplanted about 12 plants and they have been under a timer light in my garage the past 3 weeks while I was away. Most of them have started to leaf out really nice and at this point I am able to let them have direct sun during the day. Should I just allow them to continue to sprout new leaves and if so does this create any issues when I am ready to transfer them back into the larger 5 gallon grow bags for outdoor season?
Hi Gary, What should I do if my overwinter peppers start to have blossoms? Should I pinch them? I am in Zone 6A and it will be a while before I transplant them back into the garden.
I am pinching mine off. Sort of an ongoing experiment. I am tempted to leaves some but the plant should stay alive with minimal growth.
Please check out The Rusted Garden Seed & Garden Shop for all your gardening needs: www.therustedgarden.com
Question: after overwintering, do the plants need to be hardened again before transferring back outside? Slow reintroduction to UV rays? Thank you.
Yes if the leaves grew indoors they should be hardened off. If you dont do it, it wont kill the plant but it will get leaf damage.

Hello Gary, all of my pepper plants were in pots, they had flies in the soil over the summer, I put couple of an organic insect repellent and hydrogen peroxide mixed in water throughout the summer. I tried to buy new potting mix but almost all of the stores bag even if they were sealed has lots of flies inside. So I could not use any them. Now should I keep these plant inside my house ( I live in an apartment) or I should throw them away. Or the sand technique should help? Right now I don’t see those flies but them can probably grow anytime back, right?
Sand should help. It seals the top. If it gets bad after that, I might just toss them.

Hi, I brought my pepper plant from 5 degree to 23 degree and also sunlight is not that great. I am new to indoor planting during winter. They seem to be not doing that well, can you please help me what should I do?
Peppers indoors should stay dormant. I dont grow them inside for peppers. To do that you would need specialized grow lights. I bring them in because they would die outside. They should just sit in a house to be planted back outside when it is warm.

For the first time this year, I have been growing peppers in 3 gallons pot and they did very well. Now that I would like to overwinter them I don't know how to handle the situation and I would like to get your input in the matter. Can I still leave them in the same pot for the winter or do I need to transplant them in a different pot? I mulched the top of the pot, do I still need to put sand on top?
Any help from you would be much appreciated. Thank you!!!
You can keep them. I would sand up the top. Insects hatching and loving the house are the concern. Sand for sure. Get rid of the mulch

@@THERUSTEDGARDEN Thank you for answering. Your input was much appreciate it. This is my first time on trying to overwinter peppers and
it will be a good experience. I live in a very short season climate and I hope they'll resist the long and dark winter. 🤞 I appreciate the links and I will visit your store in the very near future. Thanks again.. 🌻
Hello Gary, I am overwintering my pepper plants and potted them in new potting soil before bringing them inside but I can still see a few bugs flying around and inside my soil. I assume they are gnats and want to treat my soil before they get out of hand. Is there a rule of thumb on what type of product to use for different situations.
You talk about Neem oil, Hydrogen Peroxide and Insecticidal Soap to get rid of pests but not sure which one to use on my overwintering pepper plants. I assume I am only treating my soil at this point because there are no leaves to spray.
Perhaps you could do a video on what type to use for different problems.
Also what is the difference between gnats and white flies or are they the same?
Thanks again and love your channel.
It is a tough call, because the can come from soil and leaves. So any strong insecticide on leaves. The soil, I put down like an inch of play sand and they spray that. That should work. Spray the stems.

My pepper plant grows indoors all year. I cut back the leaves and not water it much. This is my 4th year with the same plant and it looks like a small bonzai tree. I've put mine next to a plug socket with a child light in it. The light comes on automatically when it gets dark.

In southern Arizona can pepper plants remain outdoors and survive?
If you check your growing zone, you can usually look up the plant variety and it will say hardy to zone "_" I have heard peppers overwinter outdoors really well in the southwest, but I would look it up anyway just to be safe.
How big do the pots need to be to overwinter pepper plants? I have 5 green bell pepper plants and one purple bell plant I saved when my area in zone 6b was hit with a late October icy rain and snowstorm. I pruned them per your video. All the pepper plants are doing good, however, they are all flowering. I don't need that many bell peppers. I would like to grow my purple bell, maybe 2 green bell peppers over the winter, and winter the others until spring. What should I do?
Those were mostly 1 gallon pots. Some were about 1/2 gallon. I would stay around that. Indoors that can happen. You can pinch off the flowers and cut back some foliage. If you have the room, you can let them grow too. Really up to you. Im going to try and keep mine from flowering but the warmth of the house just takes them in that direction.

@@THERUSTEDGARDEN I was told I needed 5 to 7 gallon pots to overwinter my pepper plant so that’s what I purchased. if I would’ve known I could’ve got away with 1 gallon or smaller I would’ve got those instead. Is it too late to downsize or will that be too much of a shock for the plant OR should I just leave them and the 7 gallon pots and just keep them indoors instead? I winterized them today.
I overwintered a few Aji Amarillo and Bhut Jolokia peppers 2019 to 2020. At the beginning of the season I was glad to be ahead of time,
however it didn't take long for the new transplants to catch up. And the overwintered plants didn't produce as well as the new plants, their production dropped significantly in the second half of the season.
I'm overwintering six plants this year to see if the result repeats itself.
Hmmm. Interesting. Ill watch for that too,

Did it repeat itself?
@@dt-paz516 Not much difference. I have since then learned that Capsicums naturally reduce their yield after about 3 to 4 years. I don't overwinter anymore. Hope this helped.
Will peppers continue fruiting if you bring them inside for the winter. (being careful not to bring in bugs)
The will need better light than what I am showing in the video but it is possible.

Could you sterilize the soil with hot water or not worth it?
You need boiling water to sterilize and root damage would occur.
