    This was great. But, some of the people filming her should have been relentlessly asking her questions. Total turn of the tables. What she was doing was highly dishonest so she got what she deserved.

    It's in the contract: Defcon owns all video shot of Defcon. It's a huge set of classes they won't teach at your local college, so Defcon needs to keep ownership of its product. Some folks who are there work in a VERY secure capacity for various governments and require their identities kept secret. A press pass insures that people wearing them were behave professionally or face consequences. She refused to behave profesionally and so faced the consequences.

    Also, she apparently turned down an offer to get a valid press pass four times. (One should think that getting offered one that often -should- tip one off that one's undercover identity doesn't work that well... the organizers of the event apparently knew about things already hours before her outing.)

    I remember a Dateline special like 7 years ago...A dateline reporter snuck a camera into a rave, took advantage of the positive energy/trustworthiness of the ravers, covertly taped what went down, and then broadcasted it nationwide. Now that was fucked up.

  • @SaintNobody
    @SaintNobody Před 17 lety +1

    Nootpad: As DT pointed out, she was identified as a reporter and given the opportunity to get a Press Badge four (4) times. It is important that all publishing journalists have Press credentials at Defcon. Why? There are federal agents there who do not want to be identified. There are also more privacy advocates per square inch at defcon than anywhere outside Switzerland. She privately stated two goals: To get someone to admit to a felony and to get a picture of a federal agent.

    There's a difference between catching someone in the act, and catching someone making statements which may implicate themselves in a crime. The latter is technically known as hearsay, because no recording of those statements are admissible as evidence because they were recorded under false pretense.

    An eye for an eye was in reference to someone earlier who said that what they did to her was the same thing reporters do all the time. Although they don't follow people insulting them & making fun of them.
    The point is that just b/c reporters do it, doesn't mean its okay to do
    Have you no sense of ethics? How can you justify treating someone the way they treated her?
    There is no need to insult/harass her, all they had to do was escort her off the premises, but they decided to go further

    It was a game. "DefCon" regularly holds the game "Find the Fed" (involving REAL FBI agents) and "Find the Reporter" (this year)
    this girl actually was a reporter who had a hidden camera and she didn't accept a press pass.
    So, she was chosen as the target for the game.
    The game is all in good fun actually.

    hughesa12 - She was at a DEFCON hacking convention as press, but not marked as such. The rules for attending DEFCON (no this is not a "everyone can come and no rules" kind of convention) are that press that are there as press must be marked as such by wearing the Press badge.

  • @lwirbel
    @lwirbel Před 17 lety +1

    Alisonnn, she is NOT just doing her job. NBC Dateline has really gotten into the "sting" operation lately (predators, attending a NASCAR race, etc.) and it's unethical and stupid. You can very rarely make a case for a reporter going undercover, but in this case, DefCon allows in press that are legitimately registered, and this reporter was trying to go "undercover" without a clear reason. NBC has to end this "sting operation" style of reporting, as it is very unethical.

    Because she didn't agree not to hound people.
    As this clip demonstrates, no one wants a camera shoved in their face against their will. If she registered as 'PRESS' then she couldn't have used the camera hidden in her purse to photograph anyone she wanted. She would have been compelled to obtain their consent.
