- NBC Reporter with hidden camera in purse refuses official press credentials hoping to catch conference attendees committing to crimes (according to Defcon staff). She ends up fleeing Defcon 15 after being outed on stage. Video shot by Elizabeth Safran.
I enjoyed how they followed her like the press normally does to people in her situation
This was great. But, some of the people filming her should have been relentlessly asking her questions. Total turn of the tables. What she was doing was highly dishonest so she got what she deserved.
Always get your press credentials...
3:10 "Did we catch a predator?" LOL
I love how one guy's straight up out of breath at that part. "Whoo, I'm really fat!"
"Have you ever been on 60 Minutes?" Priceless.
An incident handled exceptionally well by the organizators/staff of DEFCON to the chagrin of this reporter. Great event.
Defcon Security Goons are among the best and brightest and, as the clip demonstrates, get the job done.
I love the eruption of nerd laughter as she's driving away! classic!
"Can I have your badge?" LOL...classic!
"this is for all those helpless predators"
I snickered
It's in the contract: Defcon owns all video shot of Defcon. It's a huge set of classes they won't teach at your local college, so Defcon needs to keep ownership of its product. Some folks who are there work in a VERY secure capacity for various governments and require their identities kept secret. A press pass insures that people wearing them were behave professionally or face consequences. She refused to behave profesionally and so faced the consequences.
"Please go home." There's something so brutal about the politeness of those words. This is a man who truly does not wish you any harm... But he's so sick and tired of your bullshit at the same time.
It's not about privacy... It's about Honesty.
Watch it again, it's all right there.
"What's wrong with NBC keeping society honest?" What's wrong with society keeping the media honest? Last thing we need is NBC interviewing some kid and spinning it into something it's not (as usual).
You under estimate the joy hackers having getting one over other people.
16 years later she is still humiliated
Her name is 'Michelle Madigan', look her up if you really want to know why people were upset.
Also, she apparently turned down an offer to get a valid press pass four times. (One should think that getting offered one that often -should- tip one off that one's undercover identity doesn't work that well... the organizers of the event apparently knew about things already hours before her outing.)
She was very quick to make her internet profiles private - MySpace, Facebook, LinkedIn. Of course, Google cache saves the day.
I hope this story stays in the spotlight - it's just so hilarious.
I remember a Dateline special like 7 years ago...A dateline reporter snuck a camera into a rave, took advantage of the positive energy/trustworthiness of the ravers, covertly taped what went down, and then broadcasted it nationwide. Now that was fucked up.
Nootpad: As DT pointed out, she was identified as a reporter and given the opportunity to get a Press Badge four (4) times. It is important that all publishing journalists have Press credentials at Defcon. Why? There are federal agents there who do not want to be identified. There are also more privacy advocates per square inch at defcon than anywhere outside Switzerland. She privately stated two goals: To get someone to admit to a felony and to get a picture of a federal agent.
That doesn't even begin to make sense
"tar and feather em" hahahaha
There's a difference between catching someone in the act, and catching someone making statements which may implicate themselves in a crime. The latter is technically known as hearsay, because no recording of those statements are admissible as evidence because they were recorded under false pretense.
Hell yeah-- I'd lie to an attractive woman asking if *I* were responsible for that horrific crime, if that sort of thing turns her on.
That was the greatest thing ive seen since To Catch A Predator.
She was humiliated in a way she will never forget.
A: You must feel like Lindsay Lohan
B: I dont know, Lindsay Lohan's pretty smart
bwahahahahaha
C: This is for all the predators muahahahaha
Man she got trashed bigtime
Now if this were a Dateline report, someone would be running behind shouting "why don't you want to comment on your crime against small boys"
give our love to the editors lol....you mean the government.
If they did a story now just imagine how long her credit history will be messed up
Hahaha. That nerd laughing at the last few seconds is the funniest thing in this video.
Wow they really did do "harm" to her...... also that laugh "HUEHUEHUEHUE"
word up to DEFCON for handling it the way they did. corporate press blows so hard, and it's about time they got completely OWNT.
Serves her right. If I were her, I'd check all information held on computers about her. I wouldn't be surprised if her credit rating for the next ten years has already been sabotaged!!
how did they know a Reporter was gonna be there?
This is why you don't pull fast ones, kids. They tend to end with you at the end of something quite unsavory
An eye for an eye was in reference to someone earlier who said that what they did to her was the same thing reporters do all the time. Although they don't follow people insulting them & making fun of them.
The point is that just b/c reporters do it, doesn't mean its okay to do
Have you no sense of ethics? How can you justify treating someone the way they treated her?
There is no need to insult/harass her, all they had to do was escort her off the premises, but they decided to go further
It was a game. "DefCon" regularly holds the game "Find the Fed" (involving REAL FBI agents) and "Find the Reporter" (this year)
this girl actually was a reporter who had a hidden camera and she didn't accept a press pass.
So, she was chosen as the target for the game.
The game is all in good fun actually.
hughesa12 - She was at a DEFCON hacking convention as press, but not marked as such. The rules for attending DEFCON (no this is not a "everyone can come and no rules" kind of convention) are that press that are there as press must be marked as such by wearing the Press badge.
Have you ever tried to run a camera after being up all night on a WoW and redbull binge? Ok then.
wow that guy at the end "i got it on film" like.. yea you and the 15 other people
It's the biggest hacker convention in North America.
it would be great if youtube would feature this. I'd like to see it be #1 most viewed and discussed.
yes, but how often do you hear about hackers destroying huge companies are getting into trouble?
Seriously, I fear the light sabres. And you know when the sabres come out, the kill shot from the fully functional DeathStar is not far behind. *shudder*
It's pretty much mandatory if you want to get a quote from your subject. Just watch any investigative journalism piece. I really respect the one guy asking, "Can I have your badge?" ;)
"Do you have any comments?" LOL Classic!
wow did she really expect not to get caught haha
especially in your own private convention
That's not to say that this "evidence" couldn't be used to aid further investigation, but it wouldn't bring in a conviction as the defendant was never placed under oath or read his rights.
There were many filming. They said she was welcome to stay with a press pass.
Maybe you should read some of the article about the situation. The minute that guy said "spot the reporter" she tucked ass and got the fuck out of there. Regardless of how fast she was moving, thats called fleeing.
she should've just taken the damn press pass and filmed the whole thing with her bag-cam.
Yet, she was the ONLY person kicked out.
"Do you have any comments?" hahahahaha
The term "hacker" means "guy who messes around with computers and other electronic stuff and gets them to do neat shit". It doesn't neccessarily mean "guy who breaks into other people's computers", although many people use it in that sense exclusively.
Alisonnn, she is NOT just doing her job. NBC Dateline has really gotten into the "sting" operation lately (predators, attending a NASCAR race, etc.) and it's unethical and stupid. You can very rarely make a case for a reporter going undercover, but in this case, DefCon allows in press that are legitimately registered, and this reporter was trying to go "undercover" without a clear reason. NBC has to end this "sting operation" style of reporting, as it is very unethical.
Good point. I wouldn't be suprised if they do the story anyway. If the general public sees the way she was treated at Defcon, they're absolutely going to look down on the hacker community now...
Because she didn't agree not to hound people.
As this clip demonstrates, no one wants a camera shoved in their face against their will. If she registered as 'PRESS' then she couldn't have used the camera hidden in her purse to photograph anyone she wanted. She would have been compelled to obtain their consent.
Of course criminals are afraid to be exposed! They really acted like one!
"Video by Elizabeth Safron"
Yeah, you're right. Lots of guys named Elizabeth.
how did they know she was a reporter?
"did you catch a predator"
The woman should have just been honest and got a badge instead of being sneaky about it.
These awful misogynists! I can't believe they said such rude things to her! THEY WERE LAUGHING AT HERRRRRRRRRDRRPPPPPPPPP.
Who's the rule breaker? What we do is protect your information by exposing the flaws in the products we buy. This lady broke the simple rules of honesty and trust. I would have given the lady an interview if it was approached right. I have nothing to hide and alot to tell. :)
It wouldn't be entrapment as nothing was done to solicit the desired response.
It also seems like a poorly thought out plan. Unless they could guarantee they would be the only person from the press attending, they wouldn't have gotten the footage they were seeking.
when is defcon and how do you sign up/get in id like to go
They probably had to run to the point that she already was, then walked with her.
What incompetence. If Dateline wanted a reporter to blend in, they should have sent a heavyset guy in a "there's no place like 127.0.0.1" t-shirt...
OOOOH, how wrong of me! They are actual upstanding citizens - how foolish of me to think that! That's like saying criminals are out to test the security of the police. WHAT!!! You my friend have a warped sense of justice!
Owned. So awesome. The end was great.
how are they hiding?
"Not very bright," he said. ®
Terribly disappointed that nobody had the wherewithal to verbally demolish her. This story has much less strength without the full story from DEFCON attendees.
If she had showed any sense of humor at all, she could have diffused the situation.
I hope the camera in her bag was heavy to carry all the way back to her car, haha.
Thats what you get when you mess with hackers, hell she just got a taste of what the press do to people. Seemed more than fair.
"to catch a reporter" lol
Couldn't they get a camera person not suffering from Epilepsy? PLUS the dude speaking at the podium (I think it was speaking) had a mouth full of marbles. I sure hope those kiddies had fun at their play date.
That is awesome. I take back a few of the bad things I've ever said about Dark Tangent in the past ten minutes.
I cant watch these videos because I always feel vicarious emabarrasment.
She needs to go down bigger than Bernard Shifman. A message needs to be sent.
All a hacker is is someone who likes to explore something to see how it works. Computers, cars, knitting, you name it and there are hackers there. They may not call them selves hackers, but the mindset is there.
who the hell is laughing at the end. lol.
As pathetic as this reporter was, it's hilarious seeing how many of them are out of breath walking 100-150 meters.
news programs don't require a model or likeness release. if you're in a public place, your face can be on TV. that's the reason why local news can roll up on a crime scene and film the people being arrested, etc.
"I'm glad they outed the media predator, but FOR GOD SAKES: how hard is it to keep a video camera on your subject? Zapruder did better with a Super 8."
Reporters attending DefCon are prohibited from filming anybody's face without acquiring written permission. The cameraman was probably trying to avoid getting peoples' faces due to this.
She was probably really easy to spot, since she was probably the only girl there.
"If there were no undercover reporting..."
Evidently they suck at undercover reporting.
I think there's a problems in terms. To flee means to leave in a faster than liesurely pace to prevent one self from being the subject to less than enjoyable circumstance.
The reporter was outed and ousted from the convention. Was she suppose to just hang out and have drinks in a hostile enviroment?
"this is for all those helpless predators?" so a guy who gets caught about to have sex with ur thirteen year old son or daughter is helpless?
Sounds like they need to get out more...they're kinda breathing heavy from just walking haha.
"Excuse me, miss, do all of your kind act this way?"
Drunk Tank!
shes not doin her job, she turned down the press badge.
The convention supposidly got tipped off by someone working at NBC. Is what one of the articles said.
This isnt a hacker convention. Defcon is more about security and networks.
Everyone is missing the Jist of the video. She turned down press credentials to try to catch someone in the act of a crime. Some how she let it slip and the defcon ppl found out and booted her. I'd do the same thing too (boot her out of the conference).
She was a dateline NBC reporter trying to find "dirt" on domestic terrorism by going to Defcon 15. She was called out, and fled.
it's preposterous to say that there are no blackhats at defcon.
