  • There's nothing quite like relaxing with a nice glass of whiskey after a long day of hard work. But, when your inner booze aficionado comes knocking, something a little more niche might be just what the doctor ordered. Enter bourbon. To the untrained eye, the amber-colored liquid might easily be confused with any number of different spirits including scotch and Irish whiskey. However, a particular manner of production, not to mention a specific ratio of ingredients, separates the traditionally Kentucky-centric liquor from its peers. We hope you're hankering for a few fingers of the good stuff, because we finally know the difference between bourbon and whiskey.

Which do I prefer? Bourbon or whiskey? Well, Bourbon is a type of whiskey. There are a number of types, and types within types. Irish Whiskey is a type, but within that type are Irish Pot Still, Irish Single Malt, Irish Single Grain and Blended whiskeys. Scotch also has Single Malts, Single Grains and Blendeds. Each has its own requirements.

Bourbon is whiskey. There is no difference. Bourbon is whiskey made with specific criteria. Scotch is also whiskey. It just must be made in Scotland. There are some nuances but treating like it is different from whiskey is annoying. Whiskey is what you get when you ferment a grain, then distill it. Whiskey broad type with subclasses like Bourbon.
