ABOUT THE OXFORD UNION SOCIETY: The Oxford Union is the world's most prestigious debating society, with an unparalleled reputation for bringing international guests and speakers to Oxford. Since 1823, the Union has been promoting debate and discussion not just in Oxford University, but across the globe.
The Oxford Union is deeply grateful and encouraged by the messages of support in response to our determination to uphold free speech. During our 200 year history, many have tried to shut us down. As the effects of self-imposed censorship on university campuses, social media and the arts show no signs of dissipating, the importance of upholding free speech remains as critical today as it did when we were founded in 1823. Your support is critical in enabling The Oxford Union to continue its mission without interruption and without interference. You can support the Oxford Union here: oxford-union.o...

But maybe... just maybe.... those nations wouldn't have been able to thrive on thier own. Y'know, with all the local tribes and chiefs declaring and enslaving each other, along with human, child and blood sacrifices and the occasional kidnap and mass rape of women from said rival chiefs and kingdoms. To the best of my knowledge, the UK, well, didn't do ANY of that at all. It's almost like (as some have been saying for literally decades at this point) some cultures are better than others... but I guarantee you probably don't agree with that do you?. Oh well. Her main point is that the artifacts were forcibly stolen from other ppl without their consent, & the British & Western world make a lot of money & wealth through these items to flourish their countries; while Africans are labelled as poor & inferior, & they don't make any money out of their own property. This is abuse of power. If Britain & the Western world can't use their power wisely, then they are like babies who are not qualified or worthy to have such powers. Use your power to empower others in order to empower the collective, not the other way round, by stealing from them.

Let's tack a little fact on the end of the conversation about Benin. The British outlawed slavery and human sacrifice in Benin, so trying to demonise the British and elevating Benin falls flat when attempting to make any kind of moral argument.
The argument against the British Museum is incredibly banal, 'Things in the British Museum aren't British'. She is objectively a dumb and her entire argument can be summed up as 'Britain is bad, and their institutions should serve as an act of self-flagellation and guilt'. This is also why she included the completely irrelevant fact about the Benin victory leaving only 2 survivors.
The British Museum is British not because of the items it holds but because it is an educational institution that safeguards and studied these artefacts rather than selling them and destroying them. Many MANY of the artefacts stored in the British Museum were seen as literal trash and others were bought.
There is a reason King Tut's tomb is considered amazing - it is because it wasn't pillaged by Egyptian people.

    What a silly proposition.
Fact, the musuem is in Britain therefore it is British. An art gallery is not defined by the origin of the contents, nor is a library, so neither is a museum.
Secondly, this is going to irk a lot of people but it is what it is. The "ELITES" that ran the country during the colonial period did in fact either secure those assets while they control those regions or they were gifted them in some way.
Thirdly, stop with this continued effort to dismantle everything from our past based on whether it was done with victims or not. I can assure you these artefacts in the meseum did not originate through virtuous or innocent means.

Today’s British is British 🇬🇧 when we call them a looted items in their own land they are the one who says fair enough. Now time come in such a way that and they changed and realise such a way that there best educated students wanted to tell them looted. What you called this level of achievement in term of human civilisation? Can we be like that ? If not what is point of taking this good from the people of this levels now and we who can’t even imagine to discuss this level. Therefore if we are all truely educated and if we know what that mean then British not yesterday but today made true victory in term of peace and peace prices writing better history from their poor history. I of have enough knowledge and levels of understanding to understand this , this state of national practice is not normal and not after any Indian 🇮🇳 legends kingdom history we know and not and never till today British has shown. Now if know there is two similar items I think the way it is the museum deserves one to be there. That’s what I thinks.. if good gives good back good should be respected in good way and that how the good way is..
