A New Hope was a pivotal film. If you look at the movies from the decade before it to the decade after it you can see almost single handedly where it made the shift to films that were more tonally optimistic and more open to science fiction and fantasy.

Great interview. So glad Hassan, who is brilliant, refrained from his earlier habit of trying to looking like a tough interviewer, and just asked extremely good questions aimed at understanding what his interviewee thinks. And Bernie, God bless him, got a chance to say, "It's going to take a long time, but you can do it. It's going to be hard, but hold the politicians feet to the fight and eventually you'll have the country you want. Giving up is not an option." This man understands how American democracy can work, and speaks the truth.

      @freeforest Před 11 dny +1

since you think hASSan is "brilliant", I wonder if you know about that story he told about his prom date from high school? It was false - he made it up, but she's a real person and she did actually get death threats because of the story he told. He knew about this going on for years, yet did nothing to defend her against the many threats against her and her family. Finally, it was exposed in the NYT and other sources. His defense was that his show wasn't supposed to be taken literally or as fact, but was instead just "comedy". Which is weird, because he definitely presented his show as serious commentary (done in a "funny" way) on current events, not him just making up funny stories.

As an American citizen of Jewish background (I'm personally atheist), this is such an important conversation. Visiting Israel, through Birthright almost 20 years ago, only solidified my position that Palestinians deserve the right to their own state. The horrors that happened to my people in Europe due to the rise of Hitler should NEVER have led to some of the same exact crimes being perpetrated on a different population at our hands. It's unconscionable, to put it mildly. It's too late to go back and undo the past.... but at a bare minimum Palestine needs independence and the right to self-determination and all of the land stolen since the Oslo accords agreement returned

Mind you, Senator Sanders is also Jewish (idk how religious he is tbh) but the fact that he doesn't use that in his stance on Gaza as I've seen with many Jewish students from my school. Many have said bc they're Jewish & have a closeness with Israel with their ancestry/religion, they have to support Israel which breaks my heart to hear. One can still be Jewish and still be pro-Palestine.
The important comment is Israel DID have the right to defend their country. Totally agree bc if that was the US, we'd do the same. BUT, they went way to far to ethnic cleansing causing a genocide.
Besides that, the other issues he's been fighting for, it's politicians like him we need. Hope we continue this legacy. This is a great and important conversation that we haven't seen with major political figures. Thank you for this video.

@@gmh471Exactly, Bernie continues to contradict himself throughout the entire interview. He claimed to support a palstn state while endorsing the party that is spending billions on weapons used to destroy that state. He claimed he supports universal healthcare while endorsing a presidential candidate who is agaisnt universal healthcare. He claims he is agaisnt the billionaire class and their agenda while he supports the politicians that accept campaign donations from the billionaire class and pass legislation to advance their agenda. What Bernie is saying in this interview definitely sounds good, but I'm sure even a 5th grader could understand that what Bernie said just doesn't make sense at all.

Dual citizen here. Born and raised in Canada, & live in the U.S. now. I will never move back to Canada due to its rationed govt monopoly of a healthcare system that is almost collapsing. People dying on waitlists at unprecedented rates. Including my own mother. My healthcare here is even cheaper in the States than in Canada. A family of 4 in Canada pays approximately $17,000 CAD/ year via taxes.
My family down here pays around $8,000 CAD/year. In Taiwan and S Korea we paid around $7,000/ year.
Have also lived in Taiwan & S Korea.
      1. You do realize that Canada is now the worlds only social democracy with a Govt healthcare monopoly not emulated by any other country on the planet, right?
      2. Even Quebec, since the Supreme Court, in 2005, have that one Province more health care rights more than any other Province.
      3. The word “Private” does not mean just for profit. It means both non-profit and for profit.
Bismarck models, such as those used in Japan & Germany use MANY non-profit insurance providers and many non profit service providers. This emulates the free markets, decreases administrative bloat & uses tax dollars more efficiently than single payer & beveridge systems. Also, less wait times & increased accessibility.
In Canada, each Province has ONE govt monopoly insurance Provider, Provincial Medicare. Which has become bloated with administration, no matter what Province & has lead to:
-historic #’s people dying on waitlists (my mother was one of them)
-BC had to send 5000 cancer patients to the US for treatment
-people waiting years in pain for surgeries
Alberta is definitely on the right track with decentralisation. Govt just sucks at running these systems.
Sure, there is “private” for dental, vision, physio, etc. but hospital services and doctor visits are not allowed to be covered by the private market. So, Govt basically owns your body. No country emulates the level of Govt monopoly Canada does. Not even the 5 remaining communist countries. We’re way to the left of them. Even Denmark, Sweden, Australia & others don’t allow govt to own their citizens bodies.
      4. In the States, there are 5 publicly funded programs that taxpayers fund.
      A. Medicaid - single payer
      B. SCHIP- single payer
      C. Veterans - beveridge model
      D. Healthcare.gov -Bismarck model
      E. Medicare - single payer model.
Taxpayers pay the premiums for those who are too poor or physically incapacitated.
Again, proof is in and Bismarck models are much better than both Beveridge and single payer models.
Now, because the states is a Republic, each state decides whether they wish to “mandate” people to sign up for healthcare- making it a “right”. It is a States decision. Again, if a person doesn’t want to use their employer insurance, they have the federal program, healthcare.gov to use .
Instead of criticising the States, a thank you is more appropriate. As the States indirectly subsidizes every country with a socialized medicine in two ways:
      A. When your country puts more tax $ towards your social programs rather than the required 2% of NATO, the States ends up putting a disproportionate amount in to NATO to make up for this lack of funding.
      B. Canada & many other countries free load off of the States with lifesaving drugs & medical innovations. They use IRP (international Reference based) pricing, but omit the States high price which includes the R&D costs. All these countries should include the costs it took to develop these life saving drugs because the U.S. is the country that pays for & funds most of the development for these drugs.
So, instead of criticising, a thank you to the U.S. is more appropriate.

I hope people understand -- I stood in line in Sander's rallies alongside republicans (who graciously held my place), and in the same year, watched him shout down students demanding we go to war with Israel. This man is a moderate, and the world should take grave concern with respect to the fact that he is considered fringe-left in this country.

Idk man, but I don't like when people originate the Palestinian genocide to Oct 7. It's been ongoing for decades.

Agree, uneducated people are the targeted audience I’m guessing…. FFS, a couple hrs of googling the illegal occupation of Palestine could be easily done by all Americans for as long as the genocide has been happening,

As a Frenchman, I would just like to say, his entirely correct analysis of the situation in France shows that he pays attention not only to what goes on in his country, but also abroad. And in this context where he must already have a lot on his plate as it is, in America alone, it really shows the man cares very deeply about what's best for our collective society all over the globe.
    Fucking love this man.
