    Fantastic! I was thinking wouldn't it be so much easier if you had a press and heating element all in one. I looked at electric roti makers but apparently they're not rigid enough to be good tortilla presses. Putting this on the stovetop makes so much sense. I think if you let it heat longer the lid would probably also get hot and might prevent some of the sticking but you've proven we can use a cast iron press to also cook our tortillas. If you had to make a lot of them probably not idea but for just me and my wife, we only eat a few at a time this is the solution. Thanks for sharing.

    Good idea. I think I would use the press just to smash the dough then transfer to an additional comal to keep the process going.

    Great Video! I just got my Uno Casa 8" press from Amazon this morning, and wanted to go online to watch videos about making tortillas using a press, and I've never seen one used directly on a heat source. Genius!! My question is that I"m wondering if I should have bought the 10" size. Are there things you can do with a 10" press that you can't do with an 8"? Can you still make enchiladas and burritos with the smaller 8" size? Thank you for a great video, and the idea of putting the press directly on heat! Love it!

      It's useless for flour tortillas. Hers can't puff up. Use a rolling pin and do it the correct way. No gas needed.

    I’ve never seen anyone heat up a press. Usually, the press sits next to the comal (or skillet). Use a plastic or wax paper on both sides of the press, flatten to your liking and peel off the plastic. Cook the tortilla in the comal or skillet.

    • @GatheredTogetherHomestead
      @GatheredTogetherHomestead  Před rokem

      Yes we tried that first and that’s what we saw as well, but they shrunk up so bad and were to thick. When we did it this way they are perfect thickness and they don’t shrink!

      @@morrismonet3554where’s the fail? She said she’s aware of how how the press is normally supposed to be used. But for her in HER HOUSE this works. Her family likes it. I can’t wait to try it myself. Telling someone how to eat in their own home is just plain weird 😒

      I bought the same press, about to try it for the first time (hence watching this video) and the instructions literally talk about heating the press.
      I mean I'll probably just use it as a press without heating it (I only have an electric stove top and don't think it would work with that) but yeah, I'm pretty sure she's using it as intended.

    The press is for corn tortillas. You just roll out the masa like you would pie dough and cook them in a dry hot pan. They should puff up and blister.
