That's kind of doubtful as the backing vocals are multi-tracked and would've been added later. The lead vocals were probably done on the first take, but Karen probably did not play the drums simultaneously.

    • @SayItAintSo4real
      @SayItAintSo4real Před 3 lety +10

Most every song she ever sang in the studio was done in one take, hence her nickname "one-take Karen". They recorded her lead first, generally with only the bass and drum tracks backing her. On the road she was the exclusive/only drummer from 1965 (Dick Carpenter Trio & Spectrum days, with the ultimate name change to Carpenters in 1969) through 1972. Their first album was actually called "Offering" (later repackaged as "Ticket To Ride") & she is the exclusive drummer on that album. Excellent album! She was all of 19-years-old. For live events, by the end of 1972 they did hire another drummer to play on a few songs due to TPTB being frustrated that she was behind the kit all the time. The 1972 Australian & Japan concerts are amazing! And can be found on CZcams. The Australian concert has the best quality. Outstanding drummer! Her jazz roots really shine through. By 1973, Cubby O'Brien (former Mikey Mouse Musketeer) had joined them and took over playing on every song. Karen played her kit with Cubby about half the show, while still singing lead - both of them ripping it on the drums. So fun to witness their joy playing together. The concert in Budokan, Japan in 1974 is fantastic, with Karen & Cubby ripping it on Johnny B. Goode. She was on the kit for the entire "Then & Now" album & most of "Horizon", and played many of the songs on most of the other albums. They, like every other recording artist back then during The Wrecking Crew years, had Hal Blaine as the drummer on any song for radio play. Karen did have some that went to radio play as well. Several actually. When Hal did play, a lot of it was lack of time for her to record everything, lead vocals, backing vocals, and percussion instruments, given she was the lead singer. Hal loved her. He has said some of the sweetest things about Karen and always praised her drumming, too. She adored him, and quickly set up her octoplus kit similar to his, too. Karen is amazing! There has never been another female artist, with both the lead voice of the band and percussion skills that she had. Truly Karen Carpenter is one of the greats, and one of a kind.

Young man, I enjoyed your reaction big time! Here, a 20 year old Karen...I still today get chicken skin...so many memories growing up in the 70s. Just to let you know, the 70s had the greatest music ever! All different genre' with the best songwriters, musicians, and vocalists. We all had our groups to listen on the radio and stereo. From R and B, Rock, Country, but...when Karen's voice was played no one and I mean no one would be talking. Below, many have already given you a list of their hits. I HAVE to listen to the Carpenters at least once a week. Great analysis too sir!!

This is the first time I've ever commented on a reaction video. You, sir, got it right; it's clear you know music. Brief bit of background on the Carpenters. They are a brother-sister duo. The guys you see in the video are their touring band. They are known for 1) Karen's impeccable, rich voice and elegant but understated delivery; 2) Richard's outstanding arrangements, and 3) their lush overdubbed harmonies. Sadly, Karen died in 1983 at the age of 32 from complications of anorexia. But in her short life she succeeded in not only being recognized as one of the best singers of all time, but in becoming a role model for female drummers. (Trivia tidbit: Karen also played electric bass on two songs on their first album.) Next up on your list of reactions should be, in no particular order, the studio versions of "We've Only Just Begun", "Superstar" (perhaps their best performance ever), and "Rainy Days and Mondays." There are also a few videos of Karen on the drums. The best of those is "Karen Carpenter: Kickass Drummer." I'd LOVE to see you react to any of those.

Yeah, that was Richard Carpenter on keyboards, one of the greatest pop arrangers EVER, and his sister Karen, then at 20, one of the greatest pop vocalists EVER (this song barely scratches the surface of what she can do vocally or with drums). This is their first #1 hit of many. We’ve Only Just Begun, Superstar, Rainy Days & Mondays, Solitaire, Masquerade, Hurting Each Other, and on and on. Everything they did was immaculate. They started as a jazz trio, but Karen’s vocals got them signed. If you want a real freak-out, listen to I Can Dream Can’t I.

Hello! New subscriber here! I LOVE that you do not interrupt the song!! They are a brother -sister duo. Richard arranges-writes all songs and Karen sings- plays drums. She didn't even know she could sing! She was the drummer to begin with!! She was posthumously named one of the best 100 drummers of all time by Rolling Stone!! She suffered from Anorexia Nervosa, and passed away from the disease at age 33, in 1983. Check out her playing just the drums. And any of their songs. This group is incapable of doing a bad song!! And Karen ALWAYS got her part perfectly on the first take...ALWAYS!! She was once asked by a DJ what she would want the group to be remembered for. She answered..." Just good musicians and nice people."

Sir : The summer of 1970, " Close To You " was #1 ALL OVER THE MUSIC WORLD ! Written by Burt Bacharach & Hal Davidback in '62, it took Richard Carpenter's brilliant arrangement at 23 y/o, & sister Karen's 20 y/o voice, now fully realized, to turn the song into a 70's Classic. They are BRo & Sis. And by the way : all the voices in studio, are by Richard & Karen, over-dubbing their own voices to make 8 voices in harmonies. In concert, they had 4 part harmony that still, sounded fantastic ! The voice of an angel who left us tragically, at 33 y/o. She didn't smoke, drink, or use illegal drugs. Karen died from a combination of severe ANOREXIA , combined with binge-purge eating, using Ipecac syrup to induce vomiting. At 33 y/o, her heart just gave out on her. Feb. 3, 1983. By their 1980 ABC TV Special, Karen looked dangerously thin already. The anorexia really took over then, & after her brief marriage failed. it was a terrible tragedy. Still, An Angel among us. Her brother still lives. He & I, are the same age, 77 y/o. ---------------MJL

She is also a very fine drummer. Her singing talent was discovered accidentally when she tried out for the Wrecking Crew as a drummer. She passed in 1983. There’s so many great songs and artists in popular music of all sorts from the 1960s to the 1980s that aren’t around anymore or have retired from the business. Your openness to old acts new to you is a great example of how more of us need to be more open minded and less dismissive of things we know nothing about, not just in music either. One of the great female voices of all time. Amazingly, Karen Carpenter never considered herself a singer; she considered herself a drummer who sang. In later years, the Carpenters added a second drummer and brought her out front on some songs, especially the slower ballads. She still drummed on many of the upbeat songs. By the way, the drummer the Carpenters added to back up Karen during tours was Cubby O'Brien, who got his show business start as one of the original Mouseketeers in the 1950s.

Great Review & reaction. Carpenters are one of the very few bans or artists that I can listen to over & over again without ever getting tired of. It has been over 50 years & I still get tears in my eyes when I hear her voice. Thank you for the reaction

She and her brother, the pianist were pretty big when when she died, but she would have definitely become a vocalist legend had she lived longer. Beautiful voice. Her brother went on to become a well respected composer and song writer.

Yeah you nailed it. Her brother was immensely talented, and was destined for fame from a very young age. But even he couldn't escape the shadow of her talent. She didn't even learn how to play the drums, she just decided she could do it and just started doing it, and that was that.

Karen Carpenter is one of the greatest female singers of all time. You have pretty good taste! Try "Superstar" or "We've Only Just Begun." Her voice is unique, period.

The Carpenters actually only consisted of Karen and her brother Richard. The “Carpenters Sound” is all of the layered overdubbed harmonies you hear and is actually only the two of them overdubbed multiple times.
The band was always good and live they did well to provide background vgs but the studio recordings (which this is, and the video is lip sync’d) are just those 2.
Pretty amazing! For the time it was brilliant and Richard’s arrangements made the sound what it is but Karen’s voice is what carries it.
Did you know they didn’t even know she could really even sing like that? She started as a teen drummer in Richard’s jazz trio. While auditioning for record deals the labels were looking for vocal groups so they threw together some stuff for those purposes.
And out came THAT voice!! 😳😳

Karen Carpenter was one of the best singers/drummers that ever lived. I saw her sing in 1972. She died at the age of 32 from a heart attack from complications from anorexia . To see her skill at drumming --check out Karen Carpenter kick-ass drummer. Check out Ned Nickerson's video of her singing Don't Cry for me Argentina, check out Crescent Noon ., Desperado ,and duets with Carol Burnett, John Denver, Andy Williams, and the legendary Ella Fitzgerald.

I’ve seen your other Carpenter reactions as I speak from the future. I’m so glad to see your first reaction. I kinda chuckled when you warned about not knowing and not liking and what you’d do. I knew in about 30 seconds when you’d start the song and you’d hear those opening notes and Karen would start to sing… your eyes would lock, your jaw would open and loosen and you’d just melt. It happened and still happens to all of us still to this day. Only the knowledge of the past tempers it with that lingering sorrow and loss. I have noticed with rare exception in these reaction videos that is kind of a universal reaction. It makes me happy that another heart has been warmed by the voice of an angel. As I know your future; welcome to the rabbit hole. It’s a warm soft and loving place with beautiful, some sad, music. ❤️
If you see this, one of their best songs they never released as a single, yet named an album after was A Song For You. I’m not sure if you did that already but if not…

Sheer joy for me to see a young man react to Karen Carpenter. The Carpenters are one of the most important duo American bands ever produced on record - period. Master musicians, both.
