- A bid to restore a 19th century fresco (Ecce Homo) in a Spanish church has gone horribly wrong, with Jesus transformed into something out of Planet of the Apes.

But surely that elderly women knew it was a historical, valuable painting. And obviously means a lot to the painters family too. Couldn't she respect that? Didnt even ask for permission to do that...I just dont understand how anyone could even "attempt to restore" a painting if youre not a qualified painter.

Frankly speaking, the original painting was mediocre at best.
Pork Cutlet i assume you are good at frescoes. They are notoriously difficult. You have to paint on top of moist plaster and you try to finish it before the plaster sets. It may not have been a Michaelangelo but it was a good example of its kind.

Poor lady. She didn't know that restoring a painting meant 'touching it up.' Technically, all she had to do was fill in the spots that no longer had paint. The restoration would have been a wonderful project for advanced art students who live in the area.

I'm just curious HOW the hell did she figure out she could do it? WHERE is that bottom scroll thing in the original? Was she actually painting over the old stuff, just making stuff up, or using some sort of kitchen cleaner to "clean" it? I'm actually very interested in HOW she did this.

I saw a different version in Spanish with English subtitles, where she said that the priest allowed her to "restore" the painting - I do not understand Spanish, so I don't know which version is true....

I'm spanish, she was allowed by the priest, but she says she couldn't finish the work as she had to go out, and when she came back the paint looked like that.

it was an average painting, not even original, the og artist didn't think about its conservation, Doña Cecilia messed up, we know, but the thing she did is one of the most important paintings of the century and the most famous “restoration” in history. This world its surreal

she´s been restoring the painting for more than two years ,what happened was she only touched the robe ,the problen cames when she started with the head , but every body were aware of her job .
by the way for me it´s a great job

Really impressive. Spanish people never accuse the old lady but love her as their neighbor despite the fact that is normally unacceptable, totally illogical/stupid, beyond redemption and so on. Me Japanese have to learn quite a lot from this with regard of some cases raised by our neighbors recently.
