The Discovery & Restoration of Leonardo da Vinci's Long-Lost Painting "Salvator Mundi" | Robb Report

  • Leonardo da Vinci is one of history's greatest artists and thinkers. Only about 15 of his paintings are known to exist and one was thought to be lost forever. Leonard painted that masterpiece, called "Salvator Mundi" (Savior of the World) around 1500. It was owned by no less than three kings and, in 1763, it disappeared. This video tells the story of that incredible painting, how it was rediscovered in 2005, and what happened when it went to auction at Christie's in November 2017.

The sad part is that even if someone who is not associated with the circles would find out with 100% certainty, he would still not be able to convince people about it. The painting would have to end up in some mid/level art fanatic's hand before people can actually research the particular painting-

500 years is a long time, and careless edits made to the painting made it seem fake. I'm not saying certainly that it's genuine or fake, but it is plausible based on that story that it's genuine. The painting disappeared in 1763 - with such a large window of uncertainty a lot of things could have happened to it. Heck, it could be that this painting is a fake - and that the real thing was destroyed 200 years ago.

Helena Nilsson it never made it to the Louvre in Abu Dhabi. It might of been sold already. Or the Louvre determined that it was a fraud. It only was declared a Da Vinci by a visual inspection. It was not scientifically tested.

They didn't just invite in da Vinci experts to look at the painting and say that it was. Once they saw what was underneath the overpainting, science came to the forefront. Carbon dating of a small sample from the original paint would give them evidence of age. The paint sample would also be chemically analyzed to see if it matched that of other da Vinci paintings. Each artist has a particular style of brushstrokes, which experts would already be very familiar with.

Most of the time when very old paintings are suddenly "found" there is a lot of skepticism. Just because they didn't show experts testing the painting, comparing previous works to it, style/color, etc. Doesn't mean it didn't happen. A painting like this doesn't just show up and NOT get tested. It was being sold as a copy anyway, (and having been repainted) which is some more proof that someone didn't just paint this and try to pass it of as an original Leo.

Dianne Dwyer Modestini comments reminded me, if I may say something and many may have noticed. Some of these great Master painter's pieces gives off an energy that can be literally felt. This happened to me a few times over the years and once to my husband with the Monet in the Musée d'Orsay and then again to a friend I took to Ringling Museum. It was the Peter Paul Rubens room, it even quieted our toddlers. So when Ms. Modestini says oh yes this was the real thing, I think I understand what she meant.

"We tend to think in black and white-one or the other, when it comes to attribution, but that's definitely not the tradition. The tradition was to get help from the studio.” I, personally, don't think it should matter how much percent of it he did, all that matters is that he contributed one way or another. I have a real problem with a painting like this, a true masterpiece, being in a private collector's possession. At least it is on loan to the Louvre, for now... I feel it should belong to a museum, to the public, not a single individual.

Ken even if it is. It has been restored multiple times over the years, the original artists work is not there in full anymore. And has been reinterpreted. I studied this work in art school and quite a few people think this piece is not even the original too.

Whether a Leonardo, Michelangelo, Rembrandt, Raphael, Van Goh, etc., there are always 'tells'...illustrating technique that could have only been accomplished by that master. Virtuosity is never seen in the work of a maestro's students, and, if it is, it will demonstrate his own self expression and only an influence of the maestro. This painting is definitely a Leonardo.

I highly recommend to watch the documentary on this, dianne modestini restored this painting so heavily it’s more her work than de Vinci’s. There’s also the question if the painting was actually by the great master himself or one of his students.
