Great tutorial, really appreciate the fact that you concentrate on the logic of your decisions , which can be applied to any nation rather than how to play as France etc.
Thank you for watching, but also, thank you for understanding what I was trying to do with this series!
Let me know if you have any questions :)
I assume others have said it in comments but... THE BOB ROSS OF TUTORIALS. Absolutely love it.
I may have heard that once or twice! Thanks for the kind words. Let me know if you have any questions.
As the writer of the go-to tutorial for HOI3 (for the motherland) on the Paradox forum, I can confirm that it is very hard to think like a complete beginner. This is a nice start. I will follow, even though I have over 1,000 hours on EU4. I just love good tutorials.
I appreciate that, and look forward to the feedback. Although I do think it might end up boring with so much knowledge and experience!
This tutorial is amazing! The way that you explained the mechanics in a slow and "historical" way really helped me to understand the game, and I am having a lot more fun with it now. Great video!
Very kind words, thank you so much! Good luck learning this crazy game!
I have put several hundred hours into hoi 4 and played a little ck3. I just picked up eu4 vic 2 and stellaris in the paradox sale. Very grateful that you took the time to make a tutorial that digs deep into the things new players should be looking at. Great work! cant wait to watch the rest of this series and get rolling in EU4
Awesome to hear! I think EU4 might be the most complicated of their games at this point as it has been refined, developed and expanded for the last 8 years. Although HoI4 is no joke! So I think you'll be just fine.
Good luck and let me know if you have any questions.
@@KRX_ You have a good tutorial but I have to disagree. Victoria 2 is a far more complex game when you get deep into the trade mechanics and such
Just bought EU4 today, looks like I started playing at a bit of a weird time, but thanks for the great update to date tutorial!
The game is fantastic! Just a lot of die-hard fans upset about a recent update and DLC. New players wont really notice much is wrong (aside from some technical issues that will be patch early next week.)
If you have any questions, please ask!
@@KRX_ I picked up a couple dlcs (art of war, common sense) that i've read were vital to the experience, are the changes they make really that drastic? and would playing the base game first before adding more content be wise?
Those are good ones to have. You probably wont notice most of the differences and additions for awhile. You keep the DLCs you own turned on, you might as well learn it all together. The game is actually rather solid without the DLCs, as demonstrated by the 2-3 non-DLC series we have on our channel. You should be able to follow along with this series just find, you may just notice a couple extra options and buttons in your own game to explore.
The England series we have on our channel (it's structured a little differently, only 4-5 episodes, but they're each much longer, ~1 hour long.) Is actually made specifically with the Empire Founder's Pack. Which includes Art of War, Common Sense and Rights of man, so that might line up well with the DLC you have if you wanted to learn from that perspective. I knew the Founder's Pack was a popular entry into the series for some new players, which is why we made a single tutorial series with that exact combination of DLC.
@@KRX_ thanks, check that out as well. does much change from patch to patch?
Yes and no... for newer players they probably wont notice much difference. A lot of the time changes might only be for certain regions of the world (in the case of Leviathan large changes for Southeast Asia and North America.) Sadly, a lot of the new content was behind the DLC pay-wall this time, and the base game has not changed much between these large patches. Especially for European countries.
man...this is what i love, not a chad, not an agenda, someone screen sharing on discord i mean a youtuber whos advice is hey man big world out there so pay attention to your surroundings and focus on the ground level, its all you need to catch on the rest. You sound perfectly comfortable and natural on my end, which no one does anymore. Even seriously popular channels with great content kill me with the reality tv levels of reality its doomed to become online. Volume definitely coherent, Content definitely one of a kind. Feel like I bought a EU4 tutorial through discord on Fiver but didnt pay a dime and didnt get robbed by ads. great man!
Very interesting comment! I appreciate all your kind words.
Glad that you are still continuing your series on EU4, KRX. I’m sure your pedagogy will help a lot of people who might be overwhelmed at first by this great game, and this, narrated with a soothing voice!
Hey Damos, thanks for leaving a comment and sticking around! I know we've been slacking lately. Of course this entry level series might not be as interesting for a veteran like yourself, but I appreciate you checking it out, and hopefully we'll move back into some more SWOTs and also general EU4 content going forward.
@@KRX_ I've been trying to finish this for 4 days now so I can play the game but dude is right. Your voice is soothing lol and I end up falling asleep
As a new player, I've already figured out a lot of these basics. That said, watching this video would have saved my first few countries and citizens an immense amount of pain. Watching now I'm picking up tips that will certainly be useful for future campaigns. Great Video and Well Done! I'll be binging this series!
BTW: Bourgeois is pronounced Boor-zhwah ;)
Thanks for checking this out, glad its been helpful. Good luck!
You sir are truly the best with the way you're talking and explaining!! Finally, after playing tons of hours within both CK2 and 3, I decided to give this game a try and got overwhelmed by all the mechanics!
Glad this is working for you! I'm excited to hear you're giving EU4 a try. I wish you the best of luck!
Great tutorial! I just got EU4 and started playing from scratch. Your tutorial helped a lot. Greetings from Colombia!
From Colombia, thats amazing! Welcome aboard. If you have any questions let me know. Good luck with your EU4 learning.
Loved this video!!!! I'm coming from crusader kings to EU4 and I'm really interested in this game but never knew how to start. Thank you so much!!
Glad I could help!
This is a great video! a lot of other tutorials teach you which buttons to press not how to actually play the game so this is great thanks.
Glad you enjoyed!
Finally starting to make some progress in this game. I lost count of how many failed attempts I made trying to learn it. Great tutorial, and while there is still a lot to learn, at least I know some of what I am doing now.
It is awesome to hear that you're figuring it out! You got this! Thanks for checking out this series, let me know if you have any questions.
@@KRX_ Your video does a great of job of putting the focus on the most important things first, and works down from there. Also it really helps to add, yes these are numbers, we don't know what they mean now, but we may well come back to them later. For now we don't worry about them unless they are red and large.
It would maybe be a great help if that was part of the gameplay, ie, you start with very basic controls and as you go through the years you unlock a lot options, and to some degree that does happen. Colonising the new world for example plays out exactly like that. But your opening statement nailed it, it's SO MUCH all at once, and yes, it can take a good 5 or 10 minutes before you even unpause, and technically start the game in ernest.
Later we will talk about managing expectations, and why Scotland can't invade England on turn 2, and how you can have a massive war and gain but a single province, and then have a 10 year cooldown, and that is actually a huge win.
I’m so glad that you’re back :)
Hey Idk!
Thank you so much for checking this out, sticking with us and commenting! Sorry we've been absent for the start of 2021. Here's to getting back on the wagon and uploading once a day for the remainder of 2021!
I am glad too!
Brilliant stuff. I've had this game for years but never managed to get into it. Your tutorial is helping me a lot.
That is awesome to hear! Let me know if you have questions.
Thanks for the video! Very useful
You're welcome!
Thanks so much for this tutorial! I have played a decent amount of vic2 and hoi4, and have heard really good things about eu4, so I am very excited to play
EU4 is a very deep and polished Paradox game. I don't think you'll be disappointed! A lot to learn and a lot to do. Let me know if you have any questions! I suspect coming from CK2 and HoI4, you'll pick things up pretty fast.
@@KRX_ Thanks! I played vic2, not ck3, but from what ive seen with the tutorial, the combat system of eu4 is pretty similar to vic2
rly what i need now this guy a hero
Glad it is helping!
Thanks for comming back
Thanks for checking it out and commenting! My goal is to get back on the wagon and have an upload each day. Should be lots of EU4, but also a variety of other indie management and simulation games as well.
I rlly needed this… thank you sm!
Thank you for the kind comments! Good luck learning this crazy game!
thanks for this, i havent played yet but plan to later today. this is a good beginners guide video for someone totally new to the game. you have a very nice style and pace. i will watch all your videos on this. i also subbed to you after a few mins of watching
I appreciate those kind words very much! Yes, this is for COMPLETE beginners, very slow and steady! Let me know if you have any questions!
I bought the game on saturday, very nice video, exactly what i needed :D
Great to hear! Good luck learning this crazy game and let me know if you have any questions.
7 min in and ive already subscribed you dont do things like a robot you keep it interesting
I appreciate those kind words very much. Let me know if you have any questions and good luck with learning EU4!
@@KRX_ thanks so much just keep it up man! Best EU4 tutorial ive watched
I love how you reply to every comment
I definitely read every comment, as I mention in some of the videos! I'll respond to about 90% of them, if there is something to respond to.
Thank you for this i bought the game to play with my uncle and had no idea what I was doing even coming from ck3. I needed this lol
Glad I could help!
Man, I just love how to teach! I understand the game better now.
Thank you for the kind words! Let me know if you have any questions :)
Great tutorial. Thank you.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Yo man great videos now I have learn how to play the actual game thanks I will sub.
Glad to hear it was helpful! Let me know if you have any questions.
This looks like what I'm looking for. A step by step walkthrough in which I can copy the same thing that is shown. Its the best way for me to learn it.
Well you'll never be able to copy what is shown. The game is too varied and deep for that. That isn't a property of any tutorial. This tutorial specifically discusses that it is trying to teach you how to make decisions, not tell you what decisions to make.
I'm fairly confident this tutorial is strong, and has helped a lot of people out. So if you stick with at least the first handful of episodes, I think you'll be able to get going in the game yourself. However, what you learn here isn't specific to France, it can be applied to anyone you decide to play. Focus on the reasoning behind the decisions, not the decisions themselves.
@@KRX_ Thx. Looking forward to your guides and see where it will take me. Fingers crossed.
Feel free to ask questions in the comments as they come up. The community discord is also a good place to get help with EU4. (Link in the video descriptions.)
speaking of france fun fact in a week may 5th is 200th aniversity of napoleons bonaparte death!!!
That is really neat. I'll have to try and remember that come the 5th.
Thx man you deserve more subs
Thank you too!
Complete beginner to games like this, my Uncle plays them a lot though. He got me this game and a bunch of DLC in a Humble Bundle so hopefully this tutorial will help me
Thats awesome to hear! Good luck with your campaigns.
just what I need
Glad to hear it! Let me know if you have any questions!
Such a helpful guide! Just got the starter pack on the steam sale and have no idea what’s going on haha
Glad it has been helpful! Let me know if you have any questions.
Thank you
You're welcome
Yo thanks so much for this. I’ve had this game in my library for years but have never gotten the hang of it despite liking ck2, vicky2.
Thanks for checking this out. Good luck with EU4. Let me know if you have any questions.
Actual masterpiece of a video. I bought the game on sale a couple days ago. As interested as I am in the game, I felt like I got thrown into the deep end without knowing how to swim. But this has helped so much. The way you introduce and explain parts of the game itself in a slow and steady way that feels natural is done wonderfully. Can't wait to watch the rest of the series.
Thank you very much for the kind words! I feel like you understand what I was trying to accomplish with this series, thank you for giving it a chance.
Let me know if you have any questions and good luck learning the game!
Hello Krx!!!
Average! Thank you so much for checking out this video and commenting! Hope you're well!
Decided to try this out since it's free on Epic currently. Came from the Total War series of games and man EU4 is a lot more complicated than I expected. Still learning the game but having a blast at the same time.
When I first got into EU4, I got HOOKED. This game is much more satisfying than Total War or Civilization for me, and a big part of that comes from the depth of decision making.
This game is a beast to learn, but I have yet to get bored of it after many years of playing it!
Good luck learning the game, and let me know if you have any questions.
Very cool tutorial, subscribed, I have around 300h on EU4 but I can still watch tutorials though haha, you can try to make some kind of tutorial let's play but with small nations, it will add more depth and struggle, I actually started playing EU4 with small nations, by this time I never played a Castille or Ottomans game
Well it definitely sounds like you're beyond the intended level of this video! Making a video about a weaker nation would really only be useful to people who are more advanced and want to see a general Let's Play. I don't think we have a wide enough audience for a series like that to do well. We did do a long playthrough of Delhi (which is a pretty tricky nation.) Admittedly that series was a long time ago, but needless to say it didn't do well.
I think what I want to do is more "50 year walkthrough" type series, similar to the Aragon and Songhai playthroughs we have. These could highlight small/weaker nations and be series designed for more experienced players. Do you have a specific nation suggestion?
@@KRX_ well for the life of me I am trying to restore the Roman Empire as Wallachia, but even until now I could not do it so that can be a thing, also there are some cool missions around the Ottomans, including impaling the sultan of the Ottoman Empire
There are definitely some very interesting things to do in EU4. Some are very challenging! Good luck with your campaigns.
Found it ... thanks!
Nice! Let me know if you have any questions :)
I am a couple hours into the game and can say your tutorial is WAY more helpful than the one in the game. I am absolutely going to have questions and am enjoying learning the game mechanisms.
Good to hear this has been useful. Ready for any questions whenever! Keep in mind Discord can also be a great place to ask questions other community members will see and be able to answer as well!
Just got el dorado dlc and I’m having tons of fun making custom nations and playing tall than blobbing tbh.
They've definitely added a lot of reasons to play tall, and fun things to do while you're building up your own country!
Thanks
Thank you for checking this out, and commenting. It helps a lot!
Hi there, hope I'm not too late, just finished a no DLC run with Castile after watching your Castile run and had a blast. My question is, in your opinion would you recommend the 3-month subscription or buying key DLCs? Just checked the price for all DLCs and even 50% off it's a ton of money.
The subscription service is going to add up over time for sure... so if you're having a blast with the game, I'd probably start slowing collecting DLCs during the sale. You don't need all the DLCs, a few good ones will go along way! Rights of Man, Art of War, & Leviathan would be some examples of what I'd recommend (sadly Leviathan is new and probably the most expensive currently.)
A lot of the DLC is just fluff, so most of that can be ignored, just try to research out which ones were good and which we not so good.
Hey everyone! Here is a good start for beginners, restart until you get Burgundy and Castile/Spain as an ally. Do note Castile needs to rival England so that they join. This is the best start that I can think of.
Thank you for the kind words Genesis! Also, yes I agree, Castile is a great ally for France!
Hey, I wanted to ask which mod you’re using that thickens the borders between nations? Thanks!
It is called 'Thicker Borders' - You'll find it on the Steam Workshop
@@KRX_ I’m having some trouble finding it, what’s the author’s name?
Thick Borders and Recolored water: steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=297339191
15 minutes in and I might be jumping the gun here, but does this game stick to history and force you to play through it, or are you able to shape the world through your "fictional" actions... For instance, could you turn and make peace with England and avoid the Battle of Castillon, or will it happen regardless? Really excited to get into this game and this tutorial is A+ so far! Thanks!
It starts in a historical position. Then when the game is unpaused an alternate history plays out each time. The game will never follow history unless you try and make it follow history. Even then, there are so many forces at play that events will be different each time.
@@KRX_ Fantastic. I was hoping you'd say this.
I have a question. I like attacking a lot I always get ae but I am able to make sure that I don't get a collision. When is a good time to conquer a lot? Age of absolutism? or a different age?
The later into the game you go, the quicker you'll be able to conquer. France can spread and conquer very quickly because they have so many directions they can go, Iberia, North Africa, Italy, England/Ireland, Germany... So they can go pretty fast if you're experienced!
I came in thinking I might have time for a 40 minute starter tutorial, not realizing there is 7 to 8 hours of content ahead... Now I'm even more hesitant to dedicate the time and mental energy to get into this game.
In all honesty, this might not be the game for you then. It is very optimistic to say that even after 7 to 8 hours of study you would feel prepared to start playing this game on your own. That is the goal of this series, and I think most people can that work through this series will be able to play the game, with their own choices and decision making. However, it takes hundreds of hours to get comfortable with all this game has to offer. It is a extremely deep game, multiple steps above something like Civilization in terms of complexity.
I've searched the Paradox forums but couldn't find an answer. If I'm not mistaken, every EU game has had a different start date. Why 1444 for this one? Thanks
I believe there are some historically significant events from the year 1444. However, the reason why the developers picked this exact date, I have no idea. Overall this time period marks the end of the Medieval Age.
If any of you have the epic store, eu4 is free until 10/7/21
And, thanks for the video. Just got it today
Yeah that is really neat to hear. Hopefully a lot of people can get to try this game out!
You're welcome, let me know if you have any questions.
After I watched this tutorial, I became France and took over england
Glad it was helpful! Thanks for watching.
Coming in with around 800 hours of ck2, I already know this learning curve is gonna be awful for the first 200 on this game too😂
True! But I think with 800 in CK2, you'll transition over quickly! In fact, EU4 might seem rather straight forward by comparison!
If Bob Ross did a Paradox game play along
Krx, Can you do a guide for eu4 starter pack dlc's
We did a tutorial guide with the "Empire Founders Pack" which is a starter pack combination of DLC on Steam. I'm not sure exactly which starter pack you're refering to, but that pack includes Common Sense, Art of War and Rights of Man. The tutorial we did for that was the England one. Episodes are very long, but it's only 5-6 episodes total (I was trying a different style to see if people enjoyed that better.) However, it turns out that series didn't do as well, probably because of the longer episodes. Regardless it's basically the same thing as this France series, just with SOME dlc rather than none and of course from the England perspective.
Can you make formables in base game or have to buy dlcs
What is a formable? Formable nation? There are tons of nations that can be formed in the game for free. Spain, Great Britain, Hindustan, Russia, Arabia, and many more are examples of formable nations in the base game.
There are additional tags that are specific to a DLC. An example being the Roman Empire, is a tag that is added with Mare Nostrum DLC.
like the video but your audio is insanely low. I had to turn the volume up to to max to hear properly
Well that is good that you would able to adjust your volume to hear. I think that is reasonable that each person can adjust the audio as they need. Sadly I've tried to raise the volume, but it leads to clipping when I simply pump the gain. For some reason, my voice just doesn't carry well or something, and it's been a struggle to get it louder.
There are of course multiple sources of volume, internet tab volume, windows volume, youtube volume, speaker or headset volume. So sometimes I think people need to make sure their own volume settings are how they need it. For example, I can listen to the videos comfortable even with only 40% headset volume, but that is will the other volume aspects kept to near max.
@@KRX_ I wasn't on headphones admittedly but there's not a lot of videos i come across that require 100% volume over my speakers either. You're video was great nonetheless so a minor issue of volume and editing isn't going to take away from that. Keep it up dude and thanks for replying.
Its very good feedback, I appreciate that.
As a new player is it a bad idea to start with south asia first
Honestly, yes I think that would be a bad idea. The game is mostly designed to be played in Europe, especially if you do not have the DLCs and are a new player. There are a few systems in the game that will blind side newer players when playing non-western nations.
@@KRX_
What about morocco?
Is it western?
@@yasmineelboubsi6038 Morocco would be a tough start for a new player, however, Morocco is pretty powerful in this game! So you might be able to sneak by, especially if you have experience with other grand strategy games. I would start as Castile, try it from that perspective and then switch to Morocco for a second campaign.
@@KRX_
Thx for your advise i just got the game from the epic games store.
Should I pay for all the dlc straight away or only the full game
Just the base game! Should be able to get it for $8-10. That way you can try it and see if you enjoy it. This tutorial is a small part of a playthrough without all DLC! I always find myself having a lot of fun in this series, even without all the DLC content. There is a lot to do in this game and the DLCs might even make it overwhelming and harder to learn!
@KRX can you turn your mic up a bit?
Sadly I'm not sure I really can, if I turn it up more, I tend to get clipping/static with the audio. I think it might ultimately be an issue with my voice not carrying enough in the first place.
That all being said, I do think the audio should be loud enough for people to hear comfortably. There are three points of volume control on your end and I am curious if you've double checked to make sure they're all adjusted properly. You have the youtube volume, you have the windows volume (which controls your browser volume) and you should also have speaker or headphone volume. I can comfortable listen to these videos with 30% headphone volume, which means I could make it very loud by just adjusting my headphones. I can even use my speaks are 40% volume if I choose to use speakers. This with youtube and windows set to their 100% values.
I've also compared my videos to others and while yes, the voice is much softer, the volume seems to be about the same or louder. If by chance you're referring to game sounds, I do intentionally keep those quieter, that should allow people to hear me more easily and also the game sounds can be distracting or annoying a lot of the times.
@@KRX_ you obviously have a soft voice thats why I asked if you could turn up the mic because it might sound rude to ask you to talk louder. I had the youtube volume and the system volume maxed but with a fan in the background I couldn't hear so I turned it off, but the room was so hot I was sweating 💦😂
Big true! I've been running a fan constantly as well. It has been crazy this summer.... Sadly there is no way for me to go back and increase the volume of a published video. But also as mentioned, when I try to increase the gain anymore for the recording it starts to distort the audio. Next time I upload something, I'll check and see if there is a way to boost the volume in the video editor without messing with the sounds quality.
Just got the game and went through tutorial I started France to follow your tutorial and my map does not look like yours I turned all the dlc off but worry I missed something
I'm using a mod that just makes the water darker, and makes the borders thicker. This is a playthrough with no DLC. If you have just the base game, you wont be missing anything!
@@KRX_ i solved the problem a friend of mine had given me a link to his copy and he had turned updates off so was playing on 1.22 thus the map was different because it was not current so when i went to follow your walkthrough there was stuff fundamentally different t=making it so i could not follow well. bbut we are fixing this issue
Maybe the Vikings were the aggressors and not the English?
Not sure what this is in response to, however at the start of this game, 1444, we are hundreds of years past what we think of as the Viking period.
Truly an interesting way to introduce the game. Not having someone reading every tooltip is great 😀
We start off pretty slow, but this is a very complicated game! I think this series was pretty solid and thematically explaining the game process. Let me know if you have any questions though!
How about a tutorial with all of the DLC's. Or at least an updated one.
We definitely need to do another for 2022. However, we do actually have a full DLC tutorial with Brandenburg on the channel already. The Brandenburg was made after Leviathan was released mid 2021. There hasn't been any major changes to the game since that DLC/update was released. So that series is fully up to date and is made with all DLCs active.
The series we've made with Castile and The Ottomans are both DLC tutorial series. Those series are still effective at teaching new players the game. Even if they're slightly out of date, the differences are minor. Regardless, I agree, we'll do something new here soon with another countries perspective.
Is Lithuania a good nation to start off with?
No! Lithuania is very unstable at the start of the game, definitely not a new player friendly country! Poland however, is a good new player nation.
@@KRX_ Okay thanks for telling me!
I don't mean to discourage you too much! Just try to get a successful campaign with a traditional beginner nation, then if that goes well, try Lithuania second!
Would you say this playthrough is relevant still?
Absolutely, 100% relevant. This is a NO DLC playthrough. The only update that has occurred since this was for the Northern Lords DLC with had almost no changes to the base game.
@@KRX_ Ok awesome! Thanks for the quick reply! I enjoyed your CK3 tutorial excited for this one.
Just keep me posted if you have any questions! EU4 is by far my favorite Paradox game!
*THEMATICALLY*
Exactly!
lovely tutorial, however i didnt ally castille ;) smh they hate france now
That is fairly common. You'll be fine though, France is a powerhouse! You have many other options for alliances besides Castile. You could ally Aragon, Savoy, Portugal, Switzerland, Milan, Denmark, Scotland, and maybe even Burgundy!
Sorry but you repeat alot of thesame stuff and you quickly veer into what you admittedly call 'not important for new players' and then start diving into it. Play the game and explain what you're doing. You're just being a talking tooltip through most of it.... this is like the third tutorial where I almost fell asleep...
Well, if you've tried digesting three separate tutorial series and kept falling asleep, maybe this game isn't for you? This game requires a lot of patience and study. We go slow and repeat ourselves because the information is vast and without that, most of the information wouldn't stick. A lot of the mechanisms of playing EU4 are repetitive, so there will be a lot of repetition when learning. This doesn't mean the game is simple, it is still deep due to how intertwined everything is.
How many times did your teachers and professions repeat themselves in school? Much of the homework you were assigned was essentially to go home and repeat what was discussed in class...
All that being said, I'm not actually sure how valid your criticism is that we mentioned something was unimportant, yet veered off in order to discuss it in depth. Do you have a specifically example? That would definitely be an error, and I do admit that each of this tutorial series is an attempt to get better at teaching this massive game. This game literally has hundreds of mechanisms and thousands of considerations when playing. There are going to be some situations where important information is not explained, and less than important information is explained. There is also a level of subjectivity in determining which is which.
Long story short, playing this game is hard. Teaching this game is much harder! I'm just trying to not only do my best at teaching the game slowly and thematically, but also trying to improve the 'teach' each time.
