    Great Video Ken with lots of useful information! W.T. Kirkman while not the cheapest place to buy lanterns they are top quality and they guarantee satisfaction to the customer which is very hard to find elsewhere. The Kirkman brand lanterns are as good as a lantern gets and they stock all the parts you could ever need to service and restore lanterns.

    Good video. I have used nothing but diesel in my lanterns for years with no issues whatsoever. The odor isn’t as bad as some say. The MSDS for Kerosene and Diesel are nearly identical with similar flash points.
    I have brought many vintage lanterns back to life for daily use. One thing I recommend for new lanterns or ones you are cleaning up is to line the interior tank with POR 15 before putting any fuel in them to ensure the tanks will never leak or rust from the inside.

    Good stuff you mention there! One thing I always chuckle when I see is the flame on peoples lanterns. It always jumps out at me when its too high. Many times the globe is already super sooty or it turns sooty rite off and the flame is raging high.

    Great video. I’ve bought a few older Dietz lanterns on eBay and they were fine. My luck ran out on the last one though. This one has a cracked globe and a bad burner. I guess this one will be a display model. 😀

      @@lotsatrains Thanks for the link. I plan to buy replacement parts. One question. I noticed the replacement globe for the Dietz No. 8 Air Pilot is 1/4” shorter than the one I have. The replacement part is 4-3/4” in height whereas mine is 5”.
      I’m pretty sure the shorter globe should work, since the other dimensions are fine. It’s just strange that it’s shorter, and that’s assuming mine is the original part. However, it does have the Dietz sticker and does fit like a glove…
      Just curious, have you come across anything like this with regards to replacement parts?

    • @lotsatrains
      @lotsatrains  Před rokem +1

      @@jasper60103 are you measuring the total height including the lip? I think the Kirkman measurements might not include the lip since it tucks under the smoke dome but usually everything that I have ordered from them fits nicely 👍

      @@lotsatrains I did it on two hurricane lanterns - both work perfectly.
      I even sewn in some copper wire strands to give better thermal feedback (keeps the fuel warmer during operation).
      Plain old speaker wire or copper picture hanging wire (26 gauge). 1-3 strands down the length.
      If I were to make an olive oil lamp, I would have to add in a lot more strands. Stuff is hard to use very well.
