I’ve never heard a more fearless vocalist. He was never afraid to give himself over completely to the performance, just going for maximum raw emotion even if he strayed off pitch or out of key. I can’t count the number of times he’s left me in tears and in a state of blissful awe. Jeff Buckley was a once in a generation level of special. I’ve been fan from the beginning and the music still hits hard.

He was definitely on the track to stardom. He had signed to Columbia’s prestige label. They were pretty convinced he was going to be big. That first record was so amazing. And then the drowning while he was recording the second album.

He didn't hit that "sweet spot" in his career where he'd become super-famous by dying (James Dean, Kurt Cobain, etc). But he did become an underground legend forever.

I've listened to this song countless of times and yet, it brings me to tears every time, such a complex song, takes me an emotional rollercoaster, his vocals, his lows, his highs, the long falsetto in the end, the intensity, he held nothing back, such a tragedy he's not with us anymore.

I met him briefly at a free concert his girlfriend’s band put on in Boston in 96. At the meet and greet after the show, the singer for the Dambuilders was talking to him when I went up for an autograph. He said “if you like our stuff, you should check his out.”
Jeff was friendly, but a little quiet.

I had the immense pleasure of seeing Jeff Buckley live in Sydney less than year before he died. He was probably bigger in Australia than anywhere else, due to relentless airplay on the legendary 'alternative' radio station TripleJ. Back then they also had an amazing weekly metal show called 'Three Hours of Power' that introduced me to Devin Townsend.
In fact, even today, if TripleJ does one of their 'Greatest Songs of All Time' lists then Buckley's 'Last Goodbye' is bound to be in the top five.
I was very young when I went to that show. Just barely over 18, but I remember it being a mesmerising experience.

The entire Grace album is incredible, and when you listen to it all the way through you'll see why so many artists from Robert Plant to Bruce Springsteen agree that he deserves the iconic status he's slowly gaining from that one album he released before he passed. His vocal range is incredible, but the musicianship and lyrical content of his songs are equally impressive. The build up he creates is one of the most remarkable things about several of the songs on this album, starting out slow and romantic and building up into this crescendo of almost acrobatic vocals that really pulls you in.
I would recommend reacting to Mojo Pin live in Chicago, it's one of the most incredible live performances you'll ever see and if you don't understand why he's so loved to this day watching that will probably explain it :)
His rendition of Hallelujah is also widely believed to be the best and it's worth reacting to.

He does a 10 minute version of Van Morrison song “The way young lovers do”, and it’s just him and his guitar…..it will blow your minds, lol. 👍

  • @johncampbell756

This is my favorite album. It must be heard straight through as it goes through multiple genres in a mix of eclectic covers and originals. This is his only official studio album as he drown in a river on the way to a session for the following album. He previously released a four song live solo electric episode. (The Legacy edition is 2 packed CDs.) Then I highly recommend watching the Live in Chicago DVD. This album was extremely influential, first on obvious artists like Coldplay and Keane, but it came out while Radiohead was recording their second album The Bends and had a huge impact. Surprisingly, I discovered him because this song and the Last Goodbye videos were in "MTV's Buzz Bin." He had a four octave range. His father was folk singer Tim Buckley, but he barely knew him. Both died too young.
