The New GTX 1650 - Why This Graphics Card Isn't As Bad As It Used To Be

- Today we're looking at the GDDR6 version of the GTX 1650. The original GDDR5 versions of this graphics card were pretty poorly reviewed, but earlier this year upgraded memory made it a bit better; so how does it hold up in 2020?
Thanks for watching :) - Věda a technologie
I just sent my dad one of these for Christmas because I found out he was playing PGA 2K21 on a GT 710.
Dear God 😳 poor dad
That's really sweet.
Oh my, nobody should ever live with those
You can play all Games on GT 710 /730 in 720 p Low setting
@@lovekush9103 you haven't seen real graphics
Even on 720p there are alot of games that can't run on gt 710
I'd say you need atleast a gtx 1050 for 720p low
Nobody should buy a gt 710/730
I actually really enjoy the "reviews" this guy does with cheaper or older GPUs. Not only are they actually really interesting and informative, but it also makes me feel good with what I have
"Makes me feel good with what I have."
Damn straight.
What you have?
It makes me want to hold on to a card for a long time.
That and if you are looking on ebay, it gives you a good idea of what to look and not look at.

@@GameFrostYT yeah, some prebuilts use a gtx 1660/1660 ti tho, idk if the super is faster but i know for a fact this the most common one in prebuilts especialy gaming
@@NoobGyver Yea the super is indeed fast but oem prebuilts like Dell (Trash) have low Power PSU's and GT 1030's are mainly installed in those systems. But I see where you're getting at, systems over 500$ mostly have 1660!
@Zuck Daddy Bruh XD
It does a great job in red dead 2. I was thinking it was gonna be 30fps -40fps at medium. Not high at 46fps
Yeah it was a pretty surprising result to be honest. Just wish it was priced a lot lower to make it more tempting for potential buyers

Nice to see a review of this card. I bought one earlier this year because I was constrained by power (no 6 pin) and small form factor. I just built a new computer that overcomes both of these constraints but carried the old card over for now. It will be nice to move on, but it does reasonably well for the neural net and nvenc jobs I throw at it.
I built a gaming system using a 300W PSU (because thats what I had) using one of these 1650 cards I picked up cheap with good results
Same here. I wanted a cheap pc to play world of warcraft, and some other games.
i use a gtx 275 ("216W") card on a 380W psu + i5-3570 with no problems
I tricked my OEM pc by adding a pcu 750 watts for $50
Also a 24 to 2x4 pin $5 motherboard connectors, just to add a used gtx 1070. $75
And it was worth
I'm running the 1650S fine with my 310W Gold prebuilt's PSU
@@abandonedaccount8769 wow, i bought a 1030 new for 110$ ;-;
I just want to thank you for your updated review of the DDR6 because sadly in the USA I was not able to find the super edition or anything really comparable in the price range due to everything that's going on. I purchased this card as a replacement and I do like gaming but a lot of photo editing so your review definitely made me feel a little bit better about purchasing what I did especially considering the lack of options I'm sure we're all facing right now. It's definitely sad the way that the prices are skyrocketing on hardware right now but once again I love your videos.
Pretty crazy how good this card is at 75w. I just wish they bumped it up to at least 6gb vram, but I guess would really hurt the sales of the super and 1660.
Actually the 1650 has been refreshed 3 times with 2 new models. The gddr6 TU116 and TU106, basically these two are clocked higher but has a higher tdp sadly. The TU117 is the only 75w card oof
Vram uses power. usually that wouldn't be a big deal, but with a hard 75w power limit, that would probably hurt the core performance of the card.
@@SoylentGamer yea and limit overclocking by a hige margin, if I was going to find a 75w model i'm going to find the highest clocked card
Because this was the lowest end GPU of the past generation. The new minimum may be a 1070 Ti or a 2060 level GPU.
6gb would be useless. Should have went AMD. They don't make useless overpriced non competitive GPUs.
I watch nearly all of your videos and most of the time we rock the same main specs in our personal gaming rigs. We share the same mentality when it comes to builds. I love your content and I've been following your channel since the early days. Keep up the good work! Greetings from Switzerland.
Great content as always, straight to the point and very insightful and entertaining, which is great since i don't really understand that much of pc hardware. Been watching for a few years now, keep it up mate.
I bought one at a sale because it was the best one that I could afford, the AMD cards here are often more expansive than the NVidia cards (at least in the low end).
For 1080p its still a fine card for medium-high settings , nothing wrong with that
Here, a used RX 560 costs about the same as a used GT 1030
Why not go for the super? It's probably gonna be more on sale since it's more common
When I was building my PC, I had to decide whether to go with gtx1650 or a slightly cheaper RX570 (both in the used market).
The RX looked so good to be true and I've heard about them being used in mining so I went with the safer option with GTX1650.
Also helps that my PC doesn't turn into a furnace when I game lol
@@solanumtuberosa actually the 1650 is suprisingly cheap on sales, like $120-140usd ($20-40 off) whereas the super is only like $165-180 ($10-25 off)
Nice more videocard reviews ^_^
Will you be doing a 1060 GTX review or have I missed that (it was my previous card)
The last time I revisited it was comparing it with the 1070 and 1080 a few months ago I think :)
@@RandomGaminginHD im using a GTX 1060 and its not a bad card even today, medium to high settings at 1080p on watch_dogs legion and it gets 60fps, but i wouldnt mind seeing the GTX 1060 vs GTX 970 since the 1060 is suppose to be 10% more powerful
Also have you thought about using World Of Tanks EnCore as a benchmark, you dont need a account just download the benchmark and run, it will even let you test ray traced shadows on non RTX cards
@@DTronicsUK Depends on the 1060 I found. If you are comparing the GTX 1060 3GB to the GTX 970 then the result are in the margin of error, sometimes the 1060 will win, sometimes the 970.
It's the extra vRAM on the GTX 1060 6GB that gives the card an edge over the GTX 970 with its 4GB (or 3.5 depending on who you ask), with you being able to bump up the settings more and keep better performance.
@@voteDC apparently the die inside the 3gb version is different and less powerful...

Love the vids dude. Could you include in your testing how well the cards perform with a quick MSI overclock? Maybe you could make it a whole video showing how well different cards overclock. For example I would guess that a card that takes it's power from the mobo would be more limited in it's overclocking potential than one with a power supply?
I was just thinking that the gddr6 gives a similar 5%-10% increase in fps, similar to the boost from an afterburner clock.

I ended up getting this one since the 1650 super costs twice as much here and it's not worth it, glad to know the GDDR6 version gets 7-10+ FPS, thanks for the video!
hey hows it going RGHD hope you're doing well. Appreciate the work you've put into your videos , i always come over to the channel to watch your coverage of budget friendly pc hardware over the past couple years, its also fun to watch you cover old high end gpu's. i was a bit reluctant to ask this but would it be possible if you could include monster hunter world in future benchmarks ? if not totally understandable, especially if not many people who watch your videos play that game. Anyways have a good one :) thanks for the videos.

I was going to get a 1650 super or rx 580, but they were both insanely priced, the cheapest one I found was 230 dollars and that’s outside my budget, so I opted for an itx gigabyte 1650 for 160. From this vid I see that it was an okay choice for my situation. Great video!

Also another feature of some of the GDDR6 1650s is the improved Nvidia encoder for livestreaming/video recording with programs such as OBS. Some of the 1650 GDDR6 cards use the Turing encoder vs the older Volta. The 1650 GDDR6 cards that use the newer Nvidia encoder are the TU116 and TU106 cards.
The original GDDR5 (and the first GDDR6) cards used the 200mm TU117 die. They had the 5th gen Volta encoder, and a TDP of 75w. On 6/18/20, they released a new variant of the GDDR6 1650 using the 445mm TU106 die from the 2070 that uses the 6th gen NVENC encoder and has a TDP of 90w. The TU116 die is used for the 1650 Super and 1660's.

@Ladioz the i5 can easily handle 1660ti, I doubt that there's any bottleneck
@Ladioz Depends on the game or application really. Just look at your GPU and CPU usage and see which is hitting 99% while the other isn't. Some games will pin my CPU at 100% while my GPU chills at 20%.

Dude I think you're psychic. I was just going to look for stuff about the 1650 and your video popped up...
Both GDDR5 and GDDR6 variants are great cards depending on the use... SFF builds especially with older workstations and all of a sudden you can run recent games with 1080p and decent framerates. Also in a used HP entry level gaming rig it runs with an i5 8400 and gets cyberpunk running with medium settings 40+ fps. What more to ask for?

The company that built my computer back in January 2021 put an MSI variant of this card in my computer and forgot to bill me for it. I've had nothing but pleasant/surprising experiences with it.
I'm VERY curious to see if you can get your hands on a TU106-based GTX1650. It was launched July of 2020 and is based around a cut-down RTX 2070 core. According to Techpowerup, it still retains all of the Tensor cores and RT cores from its fully-unlocked version. All the cards based on this will have GDDR6 memory AND a 6-pin power connection, as this version holds a 90W TDP. Notable cards that have this chip include the Asus TUF GTX 1650 GDDR6 and the EVGA GTX1650 KO GDDR6. I'm mostly interested if this chip can support DLSS in supported titles, because if so, it could be a very exciting budget entry in order to use DLSS to hit playable framerates at 1080p in otherwise stuttery games.
Tbh I think the non super 1650 gddr5 should stop production and just have the 1650 gddr6 as the minimum version.
Now I'm glad that i bought a strix 1650 GDDR6
I chose the gtx 1650 Kalmax from palit (completely passive card) for my father as a stop-gap solution until rtx 30 last year.
The requirement was at least 3 displays at the same time and ideally useable as a test card (so no power connecter if possible) for other systems and fairly cheap.
He even used it to play some Flightsim at 1080p and to my surprise, it did better than i thought and the card stayed at 70 degrees. I was really surprised what 75w low-end cards can do by now.
But in January I got an rtx 3070 too many (for just 650€) which he is using now. He got incredibly lucky with his GPU buying, without even trying.

I was tempted to get one until I realized how weak it is. I don't think it's a bad card for the money, but it's one of those cards where I would save up a bit more and buy something like a 1660ti which was the card I got. overclocked it and very happy with it.
@Anand Shah you're right, which is why I said it would be better to save up more money. the 1660ti is about 70-80% faster than the 1650 plus it has more vram for $130 more which is a steal IMO. if we're talking about the 1650 super, that might be debatable but I would still save up for the 1660ti or the 1660 super since they have 6GB of VRAM and are a bit faster. by the way, instead of a 1660ti, I would go with a 1660 super since the performance is near the same as the 1660ti and is about 40$ cheaper which is an even bigger reason to save up more for that extra vram and faster performance.
@@OutlawedPoet There's really no point in buying the 1660 Ti anymore unless you really like Nvidia, either get a 1660 Super or shell out the cash for either an RTX 2060/RX 5600 XT, much better value for money

Great cards for the money and handle the thermals well considering it's a Mini variant - but the card really only likes to be used in the vertical position and not in the standard horizontal config as such used in ATX cases. When placed horizontally, the fans really make some horrific catching noises when they are ramping up from like 500rpm - 2000rpm & only for a few seconds, the same goes when the fans slow down as well. Strangely and when in the vertical position which is 100% the time now (SG13 case), no strange noises from the fans at all.

@@kendog0013 good to see free will doesn't exist anymore [sarcasm].
@@kendog0013 if you can snag it for a good price, it's not a bad card, just a bad card compared to the competition
Would be interesting to see how it overclocks. Especially the memory.
I was considering to get the GTX 1650 with gddr6 memory but in the end I bought a GTX 1650 super, I'm very happy with its performance
I got a £90 1060 for my 2nd rig. I'd take that over one of these every day of the week.
Where did you get one for £90? I've been trying to get one sub 100 and theyre constantly at around£150 used on UK ebay
Yeah, the 1060 is far better value, this card is really only for the low power niche
@@josephscott1870 I got it on ebay bud. I searched with listings for best offer and simply made an offer. Start bid was £60 iirc on a new listing, I offered £90 and they accepted. Nice card too, it's an asus with single fan. I needed it to be small as my 2nd rig is a small build
@@mx3fto you got a good deal there the 1060 is very decent
@@josephscott1870 It was a pretty good deal as it was boxed and complete as well. Keep your eyes peeled mate, they come up cheap every now and then :)
Early gang :)
you came early.
got screwed over on ebay on my first PC build right as the GPU market was going crazy. bought what was listed a 1650 super for 155 excluding shipping only to realize 3 months later it was just a base 1650 OC. Being new to PC gaming I was ignorantly surprised by its performance. Despite being screwed over I paid pretty cheap compared to current prices for something that is doing what I need it to do for the most part. Pulling for the little guy.
The 75W half height versions are great for old office PC's; I've got one sitting in an SFF Optiplex with a 7th gen i7, 16GB RAM and a pre-installed 256GB SSD (with NVME and USB-C) for the same price as a GTX 2060. Runs mid 2010's games at 1080p great.
the rx 570 is still better and 4gb is also not good anymore
the super variant is much better than rx 570. I have amd ryzen, but amd gpu drivers are complete joke
Gotta admit though. Red dead 2 at 46fps on high is pretty good result for this card. Its not terrible.
the 1650 super is still a vram cripple and is 2 years younger than the rx 570.
Can u do a review on the gtx 1650 4gb oc version with only 1 fan i want the temps and the performance please .
And love ur vids keep it up
I have the Zotac single fan 1650 GDDR6 OC - Temps are fine and it handles most to all games at around medium to high at 1080p
@@cs_044 ok thanks
been using palit 1650 GDDR6 Gaming pro OC for about a month now, its pretty good budget card imo, mainly playing esport title on medium setting so it still maintain in 144+ fps
I just got this gpu today, can’t wait to try it when I get home
So strange to me that a full triple A gaming experience is perfectly achievable on such low tier hardware. I was astounded with the RX 5500XT I bought my girlfriend when I was running AC Valhalla in 1080p at the medium preset with textures set to high at roughly 40fps. My 5600XT can't even get those frames smoothly at 1440p.
I'm planning on building a 60fps low-end gaming PC for the bedroom TV, and a card like this for a small form factor might do the trick. Absolutely love these videos, because never would I have looked at a 1650 of any kind and go "Yeah that'll play the newest games at high 1080p" until now. Appreciate this.
I use a 1650 low profile card from zotac (the gddr6 version) and it's been really good so far. I usually only play halo it and it's always 144 frames+ for all the mcc games on enhanced so gotta love optimized games like that. The most demanding games were the battlefield games (4, 5) and battlefront 2 and warzone with dropping frames constantly from firefights but it's still above 60 frames when that happens. I'm surprised to see Red dead is playable.
Have the GDDR5 and I'm really satisfied specially considering my last PC had a 9500GT lmao.
Played BF1 at decent FPS, RDR2 at 40ish with decent details and the witcher 3 also.
I'd maybe upgrade to a 1660 but honestly I'm fine with the performance and I'm not really finding any games that would justify an upgrade, maybe get it with a 144hz monitor but that's gonna take a long time to save for.
I bought a Gigabyte "OC Edition" new on special with the GDDR6 RAM to go inside a DELL 9010 SFF PC. I'm right on the power limit of the PSU and right on the thermal limit of the GPU but it'll boost and stay at around 1800Mhz which I'm happy with.
Can you put destiny 2 in the Benchmark suite? It's f2p on steam now and really popular!
This was super informative thank you!
Can you do a review for the rx 570 or 580? I want to see how they hold up in 2020 i managed to snipe a deal on a rx 580 red devil card for 100€ few months ago but i can't test it on newer games since i can't afford buying at the moment
Man that msi afterburner with white stats make it so hard to focus in ac valhalla benchmark
I got the INNO3D nVidia GeForce GTX1650 Twin X2 OC for the price of a GT1030 because the webshop I bought it from gave me the wrong advice. I was going to drive a LG CX 65" with it and wanted to run Netflix 4k HDR as well... GT1030 can't do it because it is missing the hardware NVENC/NVDEC and they exchanged it for free to a 1650. So this card is combined with my spare Pentium G4560, MSI PCMate H270 and 2x 8GB Crucial DDR4 2400MHz CL17 and a 256GB Trancend 220s nVME M.2 drive in a NEON CL-A53U3 case, and Denon AVC-A110 Atmos/DTS:X setup with Denon 7.2 speakers and 6 Polk Audio 3-way in-ceiling speakers (AKA 7.2.6, calibrated with the Audyssey Multeq XT32) Yeah we watch too much TV :P We probably could've gone with a 7.1.4 set-up since the TV room is quite small, but we were redecorating anyway :P
Running games is not the main use of this machine (it is a streaming/smart-tv system) but I've been able to run a lot of older games consistently at 30+ FPS and it runs emulation great up to the NGC (haven't tried any higher end systems as I have my PS3 and Wii U and Switch all connected to the TV as well :) ) and for hardcore gaming I use my i9 9900k + RTX2080ti system and with Steamlink or Shadowplay I can run 99% of the games at 4k on my TV, if I so desire :)
Currently I am looking to maybe change out the CPU heatsink (it still sports the awesome intel stock cooler that came with the CPU) as it makes quite some noise even at low temps. I've replaced the stock thermal paste with some nice Arctic MX-4 and that made about a 4-5 degree difference compared to the standard goop that's on the heatsink, but it still gets up to around 50 degrees at idle (no other fans in the system at all) and maybe replace the standard goop that is on the GPU as well, but that one is just doing fine (fans never spin up when using the streaming services)
Anyway... the 1650 is an awesome HTPC card :)
I have one of these with a6 pin connector. Overclocked to 1930 gpu boost clock and 6800 memory clock and same temperature as stock. Free 8-9 fps, as i play in 768p it helps when using heavy reshade
The 1650 is my go to recommendation for someone who has a low profile case, as it's basically the best card that you can get in that form factor without going used, because some people want warranty or 3rd party can be sketchy sometimes, and it pairs really well with an old slim optiplex.
I use the Gigabyte LP GDDR6 version in my HTPC. It works well for what I need it for. I play games on it, but nothing AAA like RDR2 or Witcher, and it works just fine. I will be replacing it, however, if/when they make a LP 3050 or 3050ti so maybe I can play some AAA games on it at a decent framerate at 1080p.
