    there's a very famous and talented Australian swimmer, Susie O'Neill, also nicknamed 'Madame Butterfly' or 'Queen of the Pool' because of her near perfect form in both the freestyle and butterfly. Despite multiple Olympic Gold & Silver medals and a 200m WR, at the age of 48 she is still haunted by a single defeat ( 0.01 seconds ) towards the end of her astounding career. She still cannot speak about that one loss without bursting into tears. Such is the incredible and unrealistic expectations placed on these athletes. Give them a break, they are only human !!!

    The tennis world does not want controversy... that's not what they showed for Serena, eg. That girl, and her family, her dad, faced lots of racism, very ugly stuff, and it was deliberate, it showed hate, just because she is black. And on top of that she was supposed to shut up and keep it all together, as if she is passive to it all. And for the most part she did a fine job of keeping her cool.

    The issue is not mental health. She had a contract upon entering the tournament. She broke that contract and was fined then used MH as a scape goat. Its good MH is getting some exposure but there is more victimization nowadays. If I broke a contract with my employer for example I have to suffer the consequences. I am glad she had the means and endorsements to just say, "nah I will sit this one out." Before you say I do not understand MH think again.

      If Osaka's actions get other companies to put more accommodations in place or provide better support for it's employees just like other types of jobs who knows how that might save somebody?
      Many athletes turn to drugs. Many have mental break downs. Other jobs have built in accommodations required by law why not athletics?
      If she had said I can't play because I am injured everyone should say fine she can't do it. But she says I can't do this interview because I am going to break emotionally and suddenly it's not a real issue? That's what is going on. People don't understand.

    I understand that press conferences are important, but the major point imo is that in every other sport the athletes get a chance to clean up and take a breather before meeting with the press. Tennis is a very individual style sport and these athletes are made to endure the press without that few moments to calm down and relax. This is what needs to change.

    • @riley9932
      @riley9932 Před 3 lety

      Not totally true. At many events you can choose to go straight to press conference or go to the locker room and shower and refresh. She did the on court interview right after her win at the French and those are done right afterwards and are usually brief by one person, not the more chaotic, all these people in the room asking questions interviews. Most tennis pros pick to go straight to the press room when they lose, and take a break first when they win. And there are only so many press rooms so you may be told you have to wait and in those cases players go shower, change, etc as well.

    Naomi is great for bring attention mental health. But I disagree with Ciri Champion, it would be unfair to the other players for the Majors to excuse Naomi from press conferences. Tennis rely on the top players to promote the game thru these press conferences. If other player are required to do the same thing, then she should be as well, because I sure most players hate the press conferences. She did the right thing by withdrawing. It would be wrong for her earn the same prize money as others who had endured the press conferences. Players before her grew the game thru these press conferences, it would be unfair for her reap the rewards of millions in prizes and endorsements without having to contribute as other tennis player had done before her.

The rules were that players were fined if 20grand if they didn't do pressers. And she was going to go by that rule, then they changed it. I totally get what she is saying. Imagine someones asking you something 5 times in one day, then imagine them asking you the same thing for 5 days, every conversation you had. It gets to you after a while. The press often focuses on the irrelevant I formation when they could and should focus on the match.

To me, it would not be fair because all previous champions promoted the game by attending these tedious pressers. The game has grown to the point that the prize money for the Majors are $2M+ in part because of these pressers. It would not be fair for anyone to give up 140 grand to win 2.5million and not do their part as previous champions to promote for future generations. The rules didn't change. Many people have taken fines for not attending press, Venus Williams does so quite often.
