And he's right that they don't put stock in angry or emotional people. They see it as weak or something. Would love to see public question time formalised in our government structure,
We need a citizens democracy but it feels like we have a glorified modern version of nobility, our votes don't really mean much sadly. They don't represent us.

Just an idea about restructuring benefits and taxes.
Have read multiple articles that crunched the numbers and stated that you could reconstitute the existing welfare budget (with the exception of incapacity benefits, for obvious reasons) to that of implementing a basic income of £250 a week for everyone from age 18 to retirement.
And introduce a third tax bracket as follows.
    Basic Income
    £250 pcw / £13,000 pa
    Income upto £25,000 pa = 20% Tax
    Income upto £50,000 pa = 40% Tax
    Income upto £100,000 pa = 60% Tax
    Thoughts please everyone.
And please don’t bother with the whole “if you give money to people for free they’ll never go out and get a job” argument. Countries that have trialed BI have found the exact opposite.
With the non means tested safety net it offers, people are alleviated of much anxiety and depression derived from financial disparity and are empowered to get a job on their terms. Essentially not working excessive hours that’ll burn them out and also make them depressed.
Because let’s face it, £13,000 is survivable. But who wants to survive. People want to LIVE life. And not live to work.

If you mean 'income over' for your brackets, then yes. 40% tax on £25 - 50k would be quite a bite. Also, there would be £billions of tax available if we only forced companies like Amazon & Starbucks to actually pay the taxes on their UK sales, instead of using legal but morally dubious loopholes to pay almost nothing.

They don't want a society, they want poverty. The tax system in place currently hits to many middle earners and creates less equality and creates essentially: dead poor, surviving poor, keeping it together, doing alright, rich. We need a more fitting tax scale and we need welfare that does what it's meant to do. It's a wasteful, useless and beurocratic monster presently that delivers very little.

@@tanyagibbs1618 unfortunately the city of London plays a major part in the global financial system of making taxable money disappear.
The Russian oligarchs used London to launder their money from taking over state industry’s & taking the wealth out of them.

    • @SyTurner
      @SyTurner Před rokem +4

@@tanyagibbs1618 Yup. But yes Corporation Tax and tax loopholes are a whole other matter that needs tackling urgently.
After their extensive investigating, the ICIJ and the Tax Justice Network concluded, there is an estimated cumulative £27 trillion in off shore tax havens.
If that money was freed up it’d solve so many problems.
As Richard Flanagan said, “Money is like shit. Pile it up and it stinks. Spread it around and things will grow.”
And while we’re at it, the formation of a publicly owned industrial ‘evolution’ would do wonders. Developing green technologies that we can ship globally and truly bolster our economy. Instead of being whores to foreign companies that pay our people the ‘bare’ minimum legal wage.
I mean foreign companies should either get ‘marginal’ tax breaks for creating jobs and then pay higher wages. Or vice versa. Having both isn’t even imaginably sustainable.
Plus, when adjusting for inflation, to be equal to the cost of living in the 1960s (and accounting for global population growth) the national minimum wage in 2021 should have actually been £21.50 per hour. Imagine that with 2021’s cost of living.
But if anyones going to go by the Consumer Price Index’s most recent report on inflation of 10.1% in 2022, that means the National Minimum Wage should now be £23.60.
But no. It’s £9.50. That’s £14.10 an hour they’re stealing from us and making obscenely excessive profits. Windfall tax anyone?
Sorry bit of a tangent there. You spend so much time reading about this stuff it starts to boil over.

So universities will disappear because the highly skilled individuals can earn massively more in other countries. Your highly skilled workforce (engineers, doctor etc.) will follow and then proceed to work elsewhere as they take home more. New companies won't start up in the UK as the workforce wouldn't be skilled and the owners could profit if they worked abroad.
£1 million salary in many countries around the world results in a take home in the region of £400,000 to £600,000. The idea being proposed would result in £100,000. While yes the government has more to use, you cannot deny the fact you would move yourself and business to another country if you could earn an extra house every year with the extra £300,000 to £500,000 a year

For a few years now I've felt disillusioned with the Northeast. I'm from the region but yet see a complete abandonment of working class ideals and good morals. The ownership of NUFC, Brexit and some areas voting Tory has really hurt my heart. The region used to do great things, but now it a shell of itself, becoming nothing of moral goodness. This video has shown positivity, but god I fear for the area.

Newcastle is still hanging on there are enough people left in the city clued up about what’s going on it’s just the Tory’s are with holding money from it as it keeps voting against them, we voted remain as well, peoples morals are still there & people help each other it’s just hard times again in the city with all the social programs cut to help the less well off parts of the city.
Its Sunderland & Co.Durham that you have to worry about, I grew up from 12 in consett until 19 when I went to uni when we still had grants, Consett with its history voted Tory & Brexit, it’s forgot it’s own history & the Brian drain from Co.Durham & Sunderland leave you with a petty anti intellectual population in parts.
The Labour Party has let the Northeast down ( the factionalism, opposing their own leader to lose general elections and so on)but most of us know the Tory’s are always worse.
Younger alternative people from the Northeast have always came to Newcastle & mixed with the locals plus students from the uni’s it gives the city a vibrant mix of people.
It’s hard times up here but the people are still some of best in England spoken as an exiled Yorkshireman whose family had to leave after the 1984 strike.

A lot people from the Northeast as you will know leave for work to London or overseas or move to North of the Tyne if they want to stay local, it has led to most of the music & art in the North east being Newcastle.
Consett has gone the same way a lot of young people don’t vote & arn’t even educated in a class conscious way anymore, the Tory’s cut educational grants for young people & increased university tuition fees so younger working class people aren’t getting access education which suits them as it discourages critical thinking add poverty to that mix & things are pretty toxic in Co.Durham, Sunderland & Boro in a way they arn’t in Newcastle.
