    I'm a bike mechanic and reach adjustment doesn't put air in the system it only brings your lever closer to the bar. But if you want to get a more solid feel remove the caliper and very gently advance the pistons out a little further by gently squeezing the lever but not too much. Then reinstall. If their too tight on the rotor push pistons back in with a clean screwdriver. The lever will feel better because pads are already closer to the rotor

    I just got my hands on these recently. Note that these are my first hydraulic brakes ever so I don't know really how to assess them and I don't have a benchmark. First the downsides:
    1. The bleed port on the side of the calipers - you have to unmount the caliper, hold it horizontally and screw the syringe in to prevent excess oil leakage. It would be better if the bleed port was on the top of the caliper.
    2. Ratling when braking with front caliper - I could hear the same pad rattle on the video during the bedding. I don't know why the pads do it. With my previous mechanical zooms db680 I had no such issue.
    3. Lack of bite adjustment. Even though I bled the system thoroughly and it's topped with oil, there is still a significant lever travel until the pads sart to bite. I don't know, maybe it's just how it is with hydraulic brakes with no bite adjustement, but that lever travel will only get bigger with pad wear.
    4. Some of the pistons get lazy just after ~300 km of dry dusty riding and servicing a lazy piston in a 4-pot caliper is quite tricky.
    5. The set includes only one pair of barb and olive for the rear hose to get it plumbed. How much would it cost them to include a second spare pair for the front hose which I had to unplumb and snip because it was a bit too long.
    Pros:
    1. Stopping power is imense. I compare it to these zoom db680s mechanical brakes. The difference is like between day and night.
    2. Ergonomic blades. They feel well with one finger and very good with two fingers.
    And that's actually all good I can honestly write about them. I can't write anything authoratitive about the brake feel or modulation as I don't have any benchmark.

    @zethjugos1250 Před rokem +20

    Nah, reach adjustment does not have anything to do with getting air into the system. they already have air in the lines. And u are ryt, Bigger rotors paired with finned pads really helps keep the system cooler

    • @dylan-5287
      @dylan-5287 Před rokem +2

      Agreed, I've never heard that either or seen that but I've only used tektro and shimano. Gotta love shimano, just put the bleed cup on top, tap the line, and any air comes right out.

    • @Paulklampeeps
      @Paulklampeeps Před rokem +1

      The reach adjustment probably messes with the diaphragm inside

    • @zethjugos1250
      @zethjugos1250 Před rokem +1

      @@Paulklampeeps no it does not. The adjuster only affects the lever blade. Even if you max out the adjustment the length of the pushrod to push the piston does not change. People who have reported their levers getting spongy are the type who do not know how a good set of well bled brakes should actually feel. The difference is with the longer throw of the lever it has enough travel to squeeze the air inside the system before it actually pushes the piston. With a shorter lever travel it does not have the space to compress the air in the system thus the levers will stay spongy...a well bled system will never feel spongy even from the start of the stroke...it should always feel firm no matter the position of the lever

  • @patchesthejaybird8431
    @patchesthejaybird8431 Před rokem +1

    You guys have so much experience with bad brakes, you know exactly what you don't want, and thus, what you do! Maybe you can myth-bust the lever reach conundrum? If they don't get spongy, busted! You nailed it, the brake lever throw stays the same, so people probably hit their fingers before getting solid pad contact, therefore the brakes seem to lose power, and people assume they took in air.

  • @cunvericht

    I have that one as zrace 4 piston (minor differences like reach knob adjuster not present on zrace). Beautifully made brakes. But: the lever stroke is pretty long, about 25-28 mm. The lever blade shape makes it difficult for me to find the correct lever position on the handlebar. I bled the brake couple of times to find out if I can shorten the lever stroke but it's still the same. I swapped the pads to run the brake with something I'm familiar with but it wasn't as grubby as my shigura. Mixed feelings for me then.
