My bike came with Shimano MT 501 2 piston brakes and they've worked great. The lever for the rear developed a leak which actually sprayed brake fluid on my head tube, so I was able to get a great deal on a Shimano Deore lever. I like the feel of the Deore lever pull, so when and if I replace the rest of my brakes it will be with a full Deore set....maybe even going as far as a set of 4 piston calipers.

People hating on Tektro are missing the connection that Tektro makes TRP brakes. They know what they are doing. They're also just smart enough to put up a budget line for entry level or big box bikes.

I've had many issues with TRP's dhr's evo, whatever people paid to shill them say lol.
Of course it's under warranty (myself I just returned both set to the retailers) but failure rate counts for something I guess, I'm a two out of two 😂
Also had issues with a set of tektro Orion 4p that came OEM on a bike, they lasted 2 Mt Tremblant run before leaking from the pistons ...

@@dennisyoung4631not that great to be honest, even when they work properly, they have superb modulation but raw power is on the weak side, much like the hope E4, good news is they are 1/4 the price of the hopes 😂

Another awesome vid. Great info. I know you really test brakes.
I've been into e-bikes since 2017 & watched the HB100 mechanical hydraulic hybrids jump in price, specifically because they're popular for e-bikes. You're absolutely right about them being an easy upgrade without giving up the stock motor cut-off levers. (There are magnetic cut-off attachements for standard brake levers or complete hydraulic kits with motor cut-off levers).
I hope you start looking at just some pads. I know that pads can make a huge difference in even the worst brakes. Would be great to know the best pads so we know what to use when the pads go on the Tektro M-285s.

im buying them for my dualtron scooter since the jak mechanicals are just junk. Cant trust brakes that barely stop me at 15 to stop me at 40mph. I also like that they have color options. I didnt want to go full hydraulic since i just got the scooter so it gives me a good options to keep it mostly stock but be able to stop. I also noticed alot of scooters are starting to use them as stock brakes instead of mechanicals.

Hi WT, did you guys test all the brakes with the same pads (brand, type)? I'm wondering how much of the difference is actually due to the brake caliper itself and how much to the pads. I have tektros on my cannondale trail 5 (their budget entry level mtb) which aren't 1-finger brakes (more like 2) but after the pads wore down and I replaced with them with aftermarket organic pads, it was like night and and difference. Much more initial bite and better feeling modulation to the point I can almost stop 1-finger. Since then I have experimented switching out with sintered and also semi-metallics and have to say they all have noticeably different stopping characteristics (bite, warm-up period, wet-weather, fade, etc). Love your videos btw~

I wish I could of found the MT200 brakes when I purchased brakes for my Axum DP. I went with Zoom HB-875 after about 2 weeks of looking. The right leaked a ton of fluid out when my kid set her bike against mine and it was leaning on the brake lever. I bled them and added fluid still not 100%. I have seen the MT200s on Ebay recently for $51 and almost bought them.

Shimano servo wave levers and a swap to the BH90 brake hose for the MT200 👍
Any MT501 or up lever uses this servo wave technology.
MT 201 levers are slightly better shaped but the main difference is they are aluminum levers instead of steel levers like on the MT200 and have no other changes to the internals....it's about a 30 35 dollar upgrade for both front and rear 201 levers...For 35 dollars you can have a Shimano M6100 front brake lever..The servo wave levers are the way to go...You need an upgrade to the SLX lever to get the free play adjustment feature.
Here's a tip to get rid of free play on non adjustable models.
Measure the thickness of your rotor and sandwich together some cardboard or some old credit cards to be ever so slightly thicker than your rotors..maybe 1 mm each side thicker....Put it between your calipers and squeeze the brake a few times with that sandwiched between the brake pads....the pistons will stay in place but will now be closer to your rotor...Now when you re install the caliper you'll have very little if any free play with the lever...Now you can adjust the reach inwards without crushing another finger or being so close to hitting the bars.
For what it's worth you can get a Deore M6100 brake set for around 160.
    My brake set up:
    Deore M6100 front and rear.
    BH90 brake hose.
    MT200 calipers.
    Shimano RT-56 180/160 rotors

Which is actually not surprising bcoz they are both Taiwan made...love Tektros too and cant disagree with the 285 being ur top pick...those are great brakes and tektro makes good pads...they have better feel than all of the shimano budget brakes which are as you said is either on or off and no feel....u may also want to look into the tektro orion as an alternative 4piston brakes...those things are powerful...its like the 285 on steroids😊😊😊
