Arnold was having the dreams and his wife was acting suspicious before the Recall business trip.
The problem with "it was all a dream/schizoid embolism" is that we see things happening that he's not present* for and he doesn't acknowledge they happen, so if it's all in his head he'd be hallucinating things & then immediately forgetting them for the sake of the narrative.
*eg Cohaagen (Ronny Cox) balling out Richter (Ironside) for trying to kill him
Philip K. Dick wrote the short story (We Can Remember It For You Wholesale) on which this was based and all of his work plays on the question of what exactly IS 'real'? Films adapted from PKD novels/stories: Total Recall, Blade Runner (Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep) , Minority Report, Imposter, Screamers (Second Variety), The Adjustment Bureau (Adjustment Team), Paycheck, Radio Free Albemuth, and Barjo (Confessions of a Crap Artist). Also the series The Man In The High Castle. I may still have missed a couple!

It was all a dream. Remember his mission in Recall told him he would save the planet and get the girl in the end. What happened? He saved the planet and got the girl in the end.

The special effects were so mind blowing for the day, the Academy awards created a Special Effects category award just so that they could recognize Total Recall.

According to the Making Of documentary, Paul Verhoeven deliberately told the fight choreographers for the fight between Melina and Quaid's wife to *not* make it the stereotypical "girl fight", instead making them fight like they're trained in proper hand-to-hand combat. As a result it's a lot more brutal and fun than most 80's movies managed.
Filmed in '89, released in 1990.
Yeah, back in earlier days, "girl fights" were just slapping, pulling hair or just plain rolling over each other. The actual fist-fighting, kicking and takedowns displayed on-screen were unique for two female combatants at that time.
@Dio We (myself & Snorpenbass above) are talking about on-screen fight choreography while you're referring to fighting in real-life situations.
It also works for their respective characters. Lori is an intelligence operative and highly trained. But Milena is more of a guerilla fighter and is very resourceful.

Is it just me, or does this movie have the most gritty bullet shots ever? It just seems super bad when someone get shot in this movie. That poor guy on the escalator! Ouch!! :D:D

I was around 10 or 11 when this came out and I did get to see it. It's funny - this is one of the lines that stuck with me for decades before I finally saw it again recently. Such a cool scene.
I do as well..I just love that scene..Doug playing off that line from earlier.
This was shown in a cinema in London for 1 showing only a few years ago. When Arnie delivered that line the entire crowd shouted it as well (its one of those cinema where the viewers are encouraged to to shout and throw plastic spoons at the screen)

@@Oz349 True Lies is underrated? All I've ever heard for the movie is the utmost praise. It truly is one of the greatest action films of all time.
I was long resistant to the idea that the events depicted in the film were just unfolding in Quaid's head, that it wasn't actually "real." But over the years, I've come around to the idea that this is almost certainly the case. Even so, the film is ambiguous enough that viewers can genuinely disagree on the question.
Yeah, the Rekall technicians showing the alien temple, the other saying "blue skies on Mars", all of Edgemar's prediction about the rest of the movie coming true put a lot of weight on the idea that Quaid is having a mental breakdown during the virtual trip. However, those things are usually picked up on rewatches, Verhoeven wanted the film to straddle the line. That's the great thing about Total Recall, it works on two levels: as an over the top action movie with lots of twists and turns and a cool sci-fi story about letting dreams and power fantasies taking over your life.
The more I've watched this movie the more sure I am that he never left the Recall office.

Sorry if I'm a bit late, or if you looked it up, but according to Verhoeven, it is intentionally meant to work both ways depending on how feel about it at the time.
@@DarseMan Yeah but if you remember, they said they hadnt implanted the secret agent portion yet, which would include the fighting for a free Mars part. Verhoeven's goal was to make interpretable in both ways simultaneously.
There are multiple clues pointing to the whole thing being a dream implant:
- Both Rekall agents (on Earth and on Mars in the Hotel) tell you exactly what is going to happen next in the movie.
- Just before the dream is implanted you see the Martian reactor on a monitor (actually those were the movie's concept art.)
- Quaid selects Melina as the supporting girl on the same screen.
- The over-the-top-action and impossible gadgets shown could not be real.
THis was the first Schwarzenegger movie I saw in the cinema, mostly because it showed a realistic Martian environment without air and was based on the works of Philip K.Dick ("We can Remember It For You Wholesale" and "Martian Time-slip".)
I like the somewhat open ending.

Anything and everything you could list, could simply be a solipsistic perspective problem, where Quaid is creating his own interactions in his own head, basically.

From "aww, poor Benny" to cheering Benny's demise. It's awesome that it still comes across that way after all this time. :) The dude sweating when he was telling Quaid to take the pill is, for me, all the proof I need that it's real and not a dream. I've seen others mention that he saw Melina in his dreams before the implanted memories which is a great point too.

Arobein they are newbies to Arnie, I think they should watch that once they get use to his movies. At least watch the main ones, popular ones, well known ones first. That's what I did with my friend and his wife, showed them at least 5 or 6 ones before Last Action Hero
The problem with LAH is that critics and the audiences did not get it.
"Last Action Hero" had more success in Europe than in the US. I suppose it's because this movie is criticizing the Hollywood action movies. But it's really good ! 😍

Its a dream, technician at the beginning of the movie says "blue sky on mars?" when Quaid is getting strapped in for his Rekall
The clever twist is, it is absolutely open to debate. There are not enough clues to decide whether it was real.
Then why the push to keep Quaid away from Rekall, the looks of suspicion from the wife and friend, the dreams of Melania before the simulation and how Quaid knew exactly Melania looked and his wife knowing of her.
Also the drip of sweat on the executive from being nervous, why be nervous in a simulation that won't hurt you?

Having now seen "Predator" and "Total Recall," you really must do reactions to the first two "Terminator" movies. "The Running Man" is also well worth your time.

The Running Man, the only movie (so far) where Arnold's famous "I'll be back" is retorted with "only in a re-run!" by Richard Dawson!. LOL
For T1 they should watch the old DVD, as it includes the original mono mix with beefier sound effects!

A fun film. One of director Paul Verhoeven's three great sci-fi films of the decade. The others being Robocop and Starship Troopers. This is also one of the many film adaptions of the writings of author Philip K. Dick. Along with Blade Runner, Minority Report and A Scanner Darkly. All great films. Total Recall is from a PKD story called, "I Can Remember It For You Wholesale". Love the open ending in that one is still not sure if it was real or the memory implant he payed for in the first place.
Robocop especially is one of the all-time classics, and should definitely be on any future sci-fi polls.
Starship Troopers is one that I love, but... some people just bounce off it. I think it's because the satire is so broad that it almost wraps back around and people miss what it's going for. (That, and people who are fans of the book. The movie ends up taking the piss out of the fascism of the source.)
Screamers (1995) with Peter Weller & The Adjustment Bureau (2011) with Matt Damon
The irony is that, as awesome as Total Recall was, Robocop is on another level. It's arguably one of the greatest corporate satires in film history. The action movies from the 80s are hit-and-miss in regards to how well they've aged, but Robocop's themes have still remained relevant over 30 years after it came out.
Those three Verhoeven films were released in two different decades.

For the longest time, my brother and I would always say "two weeks, two WEEKS!" whenever we went through customs on a trip somewhere. Stupid I know, but it just goes to show how these things stay with you.

The author of this story, Phillip k. DIck is one of my favorites. He enjoys posing the questions "what is real, what only exists in my mind, and how important is difference, really?" though his work. Some others that have been adapted to film include "Minority Report," "A Scanner Darkly," and perhaps most famously, "Blade Runner."
Johnny Mnemonic with Keanu Reeves is another. Dolph Lundgren’s character was awesome too!
When I saw it at the theatre, I never imagined this splatterfest would become the classic it has. Thanks for letting me see it through fresh eyes - you guys are great!
You are correct, the ending was intended to be ambiguous. Movies traditionally fade to black and start rolling credits, this one flashes to white instead, which could symbolize someone waking up and opening their eyes. While most people prefer to believe the events starting from the ReKall scene are real, you could absolutely make the point that it's all in Quaid's head and you wouldn't be wrong as there are many little hints to support this theory, but the movie is especially smart in not giving us a definitive answer - you pick the one that works for you.
When the psychologist visits Quaid on Mars and pleads for him to take the pill, the Doctor states that everything will seem real to Quade in his psychosis, he will get the girl and save Mars and everything will be fine until he sees a blinding white light caused by a fatal embolism. That is why there is a bright light at the end of the film.
This was the only Sci Fi movie to win the Oscar for Best Visual Effects in 1991.
Most Oscars go to one film. I think you're referring to the fact that it received a special Oscar. There were no other nominees that year.
Well deserved too as the VFX still hold up pretty well even now.
Total Recall is a perfect movie and frequently makes my #1 of all time when I am asked. Back when this came out in theaters I saw it 8 times. My cousin worked at cinemark and would get free passes. Back then he couldn't use the free pass on New Releases. So we would usually theater hop. We would use the pass to get a ticket to an older release but then just go sit in a theater with a new release. When Total recall came out we ended up watching it as the old movie and then hopping to a new release. So over the summer of 90 I saw it 8 times. I saw it dozens of times when it hit VHS. I have sense watched it maybe another dozen on dvd/blu ray. It is easily a movies I have seen the most times.
I'm fascinated to see that "Forbidden Planet" was in your poll. It will never win a poll because it isn't well known by young people now, but you should see it because it's amazing.
That for sure, and other old classics like, "Things To Come".
Total Recall is still an underrated movie for it's time. It was a great science fiction movie. Watching it again with you guys gave me more appreciation for it even.
The remake was awful
It's corny, simple and the effects weren't good at the time. Oh yeah, there's also that whole problem with Arnie being a bad actor. It's gotten the respect it deserves at this point.

Arnold is the ideal secret agent, because he is the perfect everyman and looks very ordinary.
His unrealistic appearance is kinda part of the larger than life fun of his movies.
Fun fact, Richard Dreyfuss was originally attached to star. Patrick Swayze and William Hurt were also considered.

I saw this in the theatres multiple times back in the summer of 1990; wasn't really interested in it at first but a friend took me to see it and I got hooked on it.
I'll always remember the anonymous voice in the TV commercials saying, "Get Ready For The Ride Of Your Life!" which was the promotional tag-line that was used to sell this movie to audiences back then.
That 'Last Resort shoot-out': each time when Thumbelina pulled out that bowie knife charging the bad guy while letting out that war-call, everybody in the audience laughed aloud when he screamed after she stabbed him.
The first time I saw it, I .......a-l-m-o-s-t believed it when Dr Edgemar tried to convince Quaid that he was really back at Rekall strapped in the chair the whole time. Man, he came off sounding slick and near-convincing.
Sharon Stone became an A-list celebrity after this film. The critics back from that era were both shocked and delighted that a woman could be seen on-screen both blatantly punching and then stomping on a man's (Arnold's in this case) balls which had never been done at that level before.
Great predictions! The idea is that from the MOMENT he sits in the chair everything after plays out exactly like the secret agent memory he paid for , he saves the planet, gets the exact girl he asked for and there's blue skies on mars (blue sky was the name of the memory implant) - or it could have been real. Really cool way to have the audience guessing
This was expected to be one of the biggest movies of the summer of 1990 and it was one of them. There was a little bit of a controversy over the extreme violence, a contrast to the adventure and comedy of 1989's summer hits. It's one of Paul Verhoeven's signatures. All the futuristic details were fun to see, especially with it being this new year, new decade of the 1990s.
Looking back, the whole thing with Benny seems extreme, or at least for him to pop up again in the drill machine. That would have been a good way for Michael Ironside's henchman to go out.

@@MrFredstt that's because most films of the time were (and many still are) made from the perspective of the "male gaze" and women in them were just flat-character sex-objects. Quite literally sexist, no quotation marks.
Plenty of sexy stuff in film still, and much of it is done with more class and respect, which is more tasteful, and ultimately more sexy. A woman's body isn't just a thing for a man to masturbate into/onto, sex is better when both parties are enjoying themselves... and yes, sometimes that happens to be using a woman's body to masturbate on/in consensually, because that's what *she* is into.

8:06, this film was given an X-rating for the strong graphic violence but they had to trim some scenes to get an R Rating.
Verhoeven is all about the graphic violence in his films.
There was supposed to be a director's cut release featuring all of the cut, trimmed and even cropped shots but that just didn't happen.
Yeah, definitely. Different countries often get different cuts according to certain standards. For instance, in certain European countries, I have heard about them banning certain types of weapons. But there are cases where the country of origin carries out the censorship based on their own standards and none of the countries have the scenes that were cut out.
For instance, one of Bruce Lee's movies (The Big Boss) had quite a few scenes cut out after the initial release. Those scenes are not available in any recent version. Then you have other movies like "Cobra", Event Horizon, etc.
I myself am pretty fascinated with different versions of films...to an extent. The filmmaking process from what I understand is pretty messy in general.
@@mosesjones5376 I'd love to see a fully uncut version of Cobra! I really like that movie a ton, but I feel it would definitely benefit from some more explicit violence - it'd be very appropriate to the dark tone of the film.

The mutant with the “half face” is Hank Schrader from Breaking Bad. FYI. Great movie and great review. Another little tid bit. I believe I remember from the extra on the Blu-ray, the music cue that’s at the end of the movie signifies he was lobotomized/dreaming in the chair at Rekall. The same music is used in all the “dream” sequences throughout the movie. Look forward to your next Arnold review. True Lies is awesome too - James Cameron directed!

The only thing that throws a wrench in the whole "it was all a dream" theory is the fact that he was dreaming of Melina well before he ever went to Rekall. That's the one thing that always leaves it in question for me.

He’s also the SWAT Team leader in Terminator 2 as well (“Pull out! Pull out!”).
This was the greatest "ambiguous ending" in a movie until Inception came along two decades later. It's actually not possible to decide definitively whether it's all real or all a dream, since there are clues to support each POV.
But that's the point. You choose what you want to believe and act accordingly. Free will is paramount. As Kuato said (in what's the best line in the movie in my opinion, and certainly the most deeply philosophical), "A man is defined by his actions, not his memory."

To anyone still in any doubt, yes, _everything_ since Rekall was all in Quad's head. The reference to the program being called "Blue Skies of Mars", the fact that the adventure played out exactly as the salesman said it would and finally, that the film's DIRECTOR confirmed it. (Also, the story it was based on, "We Remember it for you, Wholesale") was a dream.
Whenever I go in for a MRI, I yell “ You fools, you blow my cover. They come, they kill you ALL,”. MRI techs love it.

Honestly if I had to pick a top 5 these five would be it. There are so many that it rare I see someone have the same top 5.

Conan The Barbarian is still one of my top 10 favorite movies of all-time.
One of my favorite movie! So glad to see someone reaction on it! When I was a kid it was one really fun story about this movie. Here in Russia we often have recorded movies on VHSes from TV for our home collection (kinda pirate thing but without any profit). When commertion breaks starts we should stop the recording to record only a movie itself. And one more fact to undestand the main joke of hole story - that time we had one commertial of ice-cream with this words (which cute little girl speaks): "Have a little break! Jamka Ice-Cream!" (means "have this delicious ice-cream named Jamka! Cool down, relax!" (in Russian it was a cute rhyme there). So... That time I was responcible for recording and it was this movie that I love so much. And I missed the commertial starting and in result we've got this hillarious moment: Quaid run in the subway from his "mates" and then suddenly cute little girl say "Have a little break!" (and here I stop the recording and then start again) AND SHOOTOUT AND CHASING CONTINEUING!!! THAT WAS REALLY A MOST LITTLE BREAK OF SHOOTOUT EVER! xDDD I hope someone read it and laughing! My English is tarrible but I hope it's understandeble enough... xD

Verhoeven is an interesting director. You need to check out Robocop and his follow up to this Starship Troopers. This was based on Phillip K Dick’s story We Can Remember It For You Wholesale. You may know Dick as the author of Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep which was turned into Blade Runner.

Highly recommend True Lies. Arnie with Jamie Lee Curtis, Bill Paxton, Tom Arnold, and directed by James Cameron. Its more of the same only better.
Cameron stole the script from a French writer. La Totale! is worth a look.

i feel for this generation, 80s films (even early 90s films) were pure gold, this was a very violent movie that became a nintendo video game, robocop was Rated R during VHS day and it became a cartoon/tvshow/videogame/toy lines etc (even terminator 2)
A little bit of trivia: The actor who played Benny (I've got 5 kids to feed) appeared in an episode of The Fresh Prince of Bel-air where his character gets fired and he says "I've got 5 kids to feed".
TWINS (1988) starring Arnold and Danny Devito is absolutely HILLARIOUS and such a FEEL GOOD movie - highly recommend it :) Arnie did so MANY great films is hard to choose a favorite but Total Recall is defo right up near the top!

Rob Bottin did the effects for Total Recall. He also did the effects in The Thing, The Fog and Robocop. Unfortunately Bottin has seemingly become a recluse and has switched to real estate(!).

Happy you guys did this one! One of the best memories I have of my early college years was seeing this one the day it opened: we sent two of our buddies to the theatre box office early to get seats and the showing was sold out! We saw it and when we left the place we were amped up! We went to our local Perkins and just talked about it for 2 hours. And we went to see it again exactly one week later, sent the same two guys to the box ofc early again because that showing was sold out too!

Love this film. The open ending is great, did he just dream it all or not? Personally I think he did, the mention of Blue Sky On Mars and the pic of Melina while he in the chair before passing out at Rekall does it for me as all a dream.
There also a fan theory he is suffering a schizoid embolism during the whole film while at Rekall and the bright white fade out at the end is him dying. 👍

I saw this movie in the theater. It was raining like crazy, and my buddies ran out of my car. So I did too. Walking back to my car after the movie. I realized I didn’t have my keys. Turns out I left my car running with the wipers on the entire time. 😂

One of soooo many stories written by Phillip K. Dick which have been adapted from his books. Let's see there's Total Recall, Paycheck, The Adjustment Bureau, Screamers, Minority Report, Blade Runner, Blade Runner 2049, A Scanner Darkly and the recent TV series, The Man In The High Castle. The books are amazing. A genius writer.
This film is of course is an adaptation. Check 'em out because they are ALL amazing.
If you go back , the name of his Recall package was "BLUE SKIES on Mars". To me , that really hints that it is his dream package.
This is probably the most intelligent plot in an Arnold movie. That being said, it still has cheesy moments. I love how violent this one is.
That's because it was based on Phillip Dick story, which is now a classic SciFi.
@@bessarion1771 Yeah, but the short story it is based upon is drastically different compared to the film. The film has a much more complex plot/subplots, and the ending is better. The ending in the short story is more suited for a different style of film.

@@skullkrusher4078I think, If you know PKD books then it must be pretty obvious that movie plot is a combination of elements from "We can remember..." short story (Martian dreams/mind vacation/mind alteration) and from his another novel which i really like - "Time out of joint" (double agent/mind alteration/fake reality). Though neither scriptwriters nor Verhoeven never spoke about it. Copyright issues probly...
Total Recall is the best PKD movie adaptation. And probably most faithful to the spirit of PKD works. Blade Runner is overhyped eye-candy borefest.

Think about it...the title of the memory implant was "Blue Sky on Mars." He was a secret agent, he got the girl, and saved the planet. The whole thing was a memory implant.

Total Recall was a movie way ahead of it's time. At the same time I don't think it could have been done better anytime else.

I saw this in the summer of 1990 at least four times in a theater. It was a smash hit and remains one of Arnold's best films!
Director Paul Verhoeven made two other sci-fi blockbusters in the same decade: "Robocop" and "Starship Troopers". Together, with "Total Recall", the trifecta are known as The Dutch Triple. He's also known for a terrific medieval film called "Flesh + Blood", the steamy thriller "Basic Instinct" and a remarkable World War II film about the Dutch Resistance called "Black Book". He infamously directed the cult classic sleazefest "Showgirls", too!

Three of Arnold's recent films that are excellent include "Collateral Damage", "Escape Plan" and "Sabotage" as well as the fun "Expendables" franchise where he's part of an ensemble of action heroes!
The Running Man is another great movie.

So the ending--- the "fade to white" is supposed to be "Quaid" getting lobotomised as it was all an out of control dream after all.
One of the giveaways- when Quaid is getting his "Ego Trip" at Rekall and sitting in the implant chair, the male technician with the glasses reads the name of the memory implant disc out loud:
"Blue Skies on Mars"
Which of course is literally what happens at the climax of the film.
But- you don't have to take my word for it- in the dvd commentary Director Paul Verhoeven states at the end it truly was all a dream. :)

Can't really go far wrong with this movie, it was inspired by the short story "We can remember it for you wholesale," by Philip K Dick. Terrific stuff.
This was the first time I had ever seen Sharon Stone and she was a beauty! The movie was a bit tongue in cheek but had some great action fight scenes that I'm sure we're the inspiration for the Bourne movies years later. It was a good film and Michael Ironside was great.
Inspired by the Philip K. Dick short story "We Can Remember It For You Wholesale" published in 1966. Philip K. Dick is a science fiction author who had a huge influence on cinema.
Did you notice that the girl he selected at Recall was the girl from his dreams, Melina? With that in mind, it must be the Secret Agent program. Your see, he is already in the program while it appears he is still in preparation at the Recall facility. This sets up the concept that the program is reality despite this glaring flaw. He of course doesn't remember the actual preparation, that would spoil the vacation.
Kinda weird to imagine that if Philip K. Dick hadn't written his short story "We Can Remember It For You Wholesale", Total Recall would've never been made.

I still think this is one of the greatest science fiction films of all time. And a whole lot of fun. Star Wars? That is actually fantasy. This is real science fiction.
