The secret to Big Trouble in Little China is realizing Jack is the sidekick. It's like the camera followed Robin around all the time, with Batman saving the day off-camera.

He is also the stand-in for the viewer, knowing nothing on what's going on and experiencing the events + he is as adept in fighting as the usual viewer
Yeah, that's the trick. You think handsome, be-mulleted, 80's Kurt Russell is the hero, but in reality he's the bumbling sidekick. I remember the first time I saw this cut I was very surprised by that initial scene with Cheng praising Burton. In the original cut, the movie starts with Jack in his truck, talking shit. In the director's commentary, Carpenter says that the studio made him shoot that scene after the initial cut, because they wanted to market Russel as the hero, because they didn't believe that people would accept Wang as the badass, i.e., put a white guy in front.
The thing about it is, Jack Burton is not just the sidekick, he is also a hero in training - after the events of the movie take place, Jack Burton later on becomes a true, bonafied action hero. That was what I always took from the movie, anyway. And maybe the yeti creature becomes his sidekick (:
I have heard that there was a fairly recent Big Trouble comic book series that takes place after this, but I haven't read it.
I know this (👆) belief has become mainstream for some time now, but I disagree. Yes-I know Jack’s out of his element, & yes-I know he does things to take him out of the action (which allows Wang kick a$$), BUT…

It's really comforting to see so many other people in the comments saying they loved this movie when they were a kid because I wore out my 'Taped from TV' VHS of this when I was a kid. :D
I love this movie and had just watched it last weekend with my man. The skeletons used to terrify me as a small child though lol

I loved this movie as a kid at face value, then when I rewatched it as an adult I realised something that completely went over my head as a kid: Jack Burton is an American action hero trapped in a Chinese action film by accident. He is constantly spouting one-liners that everyone else in the scene is confused by, he has no idea what's going on at all times and other characters are just moving the plot along around him because they know the lore and culture, and his solutions to problems are seen as ridiculous and simplistic or quaint by everyone.....and yet for all of this, he is successful BECAUSE he is a complete wild-card, he is doing things that no one is expecting because they are so used to how things play out in their genre's stories and his actions are catching them off-guard.
That is a REALLY good take. I always hear the side-kick thing, but it never quite felt right. This sounds a lot more like what is going on. Good stuff man
On top of that, think about what's going on. Wang brushes things off instead of giving detail because there is no reason to. Jack basically just says "What do you need Wang?" and then goes along with it because he is his friend. He doesn't care about the why. His friend needs his help and eventually others need his help and he is there. He even says he has seen some unreasonable stuff and yet he is still there beside them.
Wow I might actually have to rewatch this movie after reading your comment. I thought it was a weird drug fueled concept from Carpenter, I also thought Russel's character was deeply out of place, but now I'm convinced I REALLY underestimated the level of thought that was put into this movie. Thank you.
1 minute in "I assume he is going to be a badass in this" Well here's the thing... not really. He's the sidekick.

The whole movie was a cheeky subversion of the white saviour trope, the joke is many reviewers and first time watchers never realised that.
@Kristopher Chavez No. John has pretty much come out and confirmed that yes he was subverting the "Western White Guy saves the day" troupe.
@Kristopher Chavez There was nothing subconscious about this film, Carpenter wrote and directed it exactly the way he wanted (okay, after he’d changed the setting form Wild West to Modern Day) and Kurt Russell played the part to that end - as a John Wayne-esque character-as-sidekick. Carpenter is on record (can’t find the link atm) as being disappointed that reviewers never saw through Jack Burton’s posturing and bluff, to see the fundamental truth that the White Hero had no idea what he was doing, no knowledge of the culture he was interacting with, and ultimately had very little impact on the story.
Trust me, what you see is as it was intended.
The lipstick gag kills me every time. I remember when this came out theatrically nobody understood that Kurt Russell wasn’t the hero, he was doing a John Wayne impression and the “sidekick” was the hero. Most of Carpenter’s filmography has gained the love it deserved originally.👍😂
@Kristopher Chavez not sure about the matrix trilogy, the sequels are just not good films in my opinion, nothing to do with not being ready to understand them lol. This is a classic from start to finish.
@Kristopher Chavez I'm not sure the reason for the movie not being well received is for the reason you think. Bruce Lee and Kung Fu Theater were extremely popular back then.
I lean towards it being a (sub)genre thing. This kind of modern day fantasy wasn't a huge draw for a wide audience. It found An audience and even became a much-loved movie -- just like a lot of them: Neverending Story, Labyrinth, Masters of the Universe, and a few others. Science fiction and futuristic movies were eating the box office for lunch, though

After all, we both love this movie. Haha.
About The Matrix films, though... I understood them because I had people who were very into the lore explain them to me. However, as movies go, the first one is honestly the only one I love to this day. The others were meh to me. But, maybe as time goes on, I'll be able to get into them more.
It took me forever to get into one of its source materials, Alice in Wonderland. But, I'm much more into it as an adult than ever I was as a child
@Kristopher Chavez If I think about most (but not all) movie series I've seen, the majority really should have done just as you wrote - either leave it at the first and maybe second movies, and not do more. Or, take their time to really plan out the story and what they're going to do. It just rarely happens.
But, then again, the few series I enjoy are questionable: The non-Rob Zombie Halloween series, Star Wars, maybe Harry Potter, kinda LOTR/Hobbit, and a few others. Hahaha.

It's a wonderful detail by Carpenter, that Kurt Russell actually plays the slightly incompetent sidekick.

Well said. Though I loved that his friends still respected him and had his back. Jack had an inflated ego but he was as loyal as they came and did defeat Lopan.
It's not exactly subtle but I'm always happy when people realize that.
Yeah in an interview Carpenter said that 'Jack is not the hero, he is an idiot!' Only reason why he is featured so centrally in the posters is because the studios more or less forced him to do that and add that opening scene where Egg straight up declares him a hero, since they weren't confident in a movie with an Asian main character would be successful, so it was marketed as Jack being the main character.
Truth! Wang is the hero and Jack is is loyal sidekick.
This is clearly a deconstruction of the John Wayne tough guy archetype. He's even doing a John Wayne impression. This movie was a bomb when it came out, critics and audiences hated it. I was working in a theater when this came out and went to the opening day matinee. Audience was just me and the manager of the theater, but we laughed our asses off.
Fun fact: The Studio demanded the opening scene where the investigator is questioning Egg Shen about Jack Burton because they were afraid audiences wouldn't understand that Jack is supposed to be the audience proxy even though he's really the sidekick. Bonus fact: the studio for The Thing also demanded the opening shot of the UFO crashing into earth, because they were afraid that audiences wouldn't understand that The Thing was a crashed alien life form. Movie studios think we're all idiots.
That opening scene was completely unnecessary. 1st time I watched this, I missed that opening scene for some reason, which made the supernatural aspect a delightful surprise.
John Carpenter once described this movie as John Wayne (think traditional Hollywood leading man/hero) thrown into a Hong Kong Kung Fu movie. When I heard him say in the interview Kurt Russell’s character suddenly made total sense to me.

This is the film that made me a life long fan of Kurt Russell , James Hong , and John Carpenter.
If you haven't heard the DVD commentary , it is just Kurt Russell and John Carpenter joking and laughing the whole time. Kurt Russell laughing will make anyone's day better.
I actually listen to that commentary track on my phone when I feel down. God I love that movie!
Oh, yeah! That is great. It's been a while, so I have to listen to that again soon.
I guess the producers of the DVD was expecting something else, but it was pure gold.
The commentary on the DVD of They Live with Carpenter and Roddy Piper is great too, even if they also talk a lot about the movie. ;)

The DVD commentary on Used Cars is phenomenal. It makes for a great double feature and once you've watched the movie with the commentary, you end up watching the movie twice every time. Doesn't matter which way you start it, with or without commentary, you laugh just as hard the second time.
Not sure if it's part of the commentary you're talking about, but I remember hearing Kurt say during one scene he actually had a fever.
"I'm s'pose to buy this shit? Two thousand years and he can't find one broad to fit the bill? C'mom Dave, you must be doing something seriously wrong."
It’s right up there with some of the best lines this incredible script has to offer. Take care and remember to make sure no one slams the back of your “favourite” head up against a bar-room wall and asks if you’ve paid your dues…

This movie is just pure, don’t-question-it fun. It reminds me a lot of Ghostbusters too, that same mix of supernatural shenanigans and dry humour. A classic that deserved better on its original release.

Pork chop express is one of my favorite names. It's strange knowing many years later that the lighting guy and Lo pan was the inspiration for Raiden and Shang Sung in the Mortal Kombat videogames.

Most fun thing about this movie, the magic and mystical elements are not really hidden from the public...it's just in a spot of the city people just don't care ! And the more the movie build, the more the powers and mystic elements becomes crazy ! They are pretty much flying at the end !! It's insane that movie bombed at the time, one of the most fun John Carpenter movie no question !
Very bad acting might be one reason. A bit too bloody for kids another. Not a kids movie and not an adult movie.

In Real Estate the saying is, "Location, location, location". For movies it's, "Timing, timing, timing". This flick got lost in the hype leading up to the release of "Aliens". Another movie that suffered a similar fate was "Blade Runner", which got lost among Conan, E.T., and Wrath of Khan.

"He was a perfect representation of the audience". You nailed it. We're all witnessing this madness THROUGH the protagonist which kinda makes it easier to digest. By the end were all just along for the ride with Jack.
I think you finally have seen enough 80's movies that take on The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the 8th Dimension. It's a super fun Cult 80's movie with a ton of actors you'll recognize from Highlander, RoboCop, The Fly and Back to the Future. It was directed by the guy who wrote the screenplay for Big Trouble in Little China and has a similar fun vibe.
Just remember, no matter where you go, there you are!
I have no argument with any of those choices. Some may not be my favorites, but all are worthy.

Buckaroo Banzai is an excellent choice. So irrepressibly 80's, unfortunately the studio didn't understand it, like Big Trouble in Little China, so the promotion for the film was almost nonexistent. Unfortunately, the rights for Buckaroo Banzai is in a legal quagmire. That is one of the only films I'd love to see a reboot and continuation of the series.

Fun facts besides the sidekick thing: In Escape from New York, Russels performance was based on Clint Eastwood. In Big Trouble its based on John Wayne. John Carpenter was a fan of westerns and ironically Big troubles original script took place in the old west before re-writes made it take place is present day.

Lo-pan is definitely the inspiration for Shang Tsung
Interesting note is that Big Trouble in Little China was an inspiration for a couple of Mortal Kombat characters, Raiden (the character design), and Shang-Tsung.

The jump scare at 10:12 is one of the Funniest things I have seen in a long time. I must have watched it 30 times already. When I start to feel down about things I put it on. It makes me laugh until I cry. Thank you so very much.
What's hilarious about this is that *Jack Burton* is the SIDEKICK of this movie. Wang Chi is the Hero. He's the one that does the heroic acts, kills a four wind, gets the girl in the end, etc. The whole story is told from Jack's point of view where *he thinks* that *he's* the main character. It's hilarious.
To be fair Jack did kill Lo-Pan at the end
Yes but not quite accurate. Jack Burton is the one who ends up killing Lo Pan, the leader. Taking out the leader of "the bad guys" is always the ultimate prize in a conflict. I think the point implied was that Jack was valuable all along and not just a spectator.

While it's not known as one of Carpenter's most popular films, his movie Prince of Darkness is not as crazy as BTILC but still pretty good and damn interesting. I always felt it was underrated. It also includes a few members of the Big Trouble in Little China cast.
Prince of Darkness is a gem. It also messed with my mind for days.

So this was a cult classic with my unit in 1986 when we were stationed in Europe. Sitting in the barracks watching the video on vhs we came up with a drink called the Pork Chop express. Two cans of 7up, 7 shots of absolut vodka , 3 shots of triple sec and 2 ounces of lime juice served in a liter mug served on the rocks.
That... is a lot of vodka and triple sec. I have heartburn just reading about it.

I caught this movie in theaters when I was a kid. Me and my brother went to the dollar movie theater, it was like next door to the "real" theater, but it was only a dollar. Purely chose it because of the poster. We were blown away, the fun and excitement were like nothing we'd watched before. To this day we quote the movie at each other. This and Army of Darkness, we watched both at the same dollar movie theater, we got to go to the dollar movies pretty much every weekend... Ahhh the 80s...
1987's Prince of Darkness should be the next John Carpenter classic in the watch list! Also, The Fog (1980) and Starman (1984)!
My two favorite things about this movie: For the first half hour no one knows what the hell is going on and Jack Burton is a side character in his own movie.
John Carpenter is a underrated genius. He does things so understated and simple but keeps you on the edge of your seat the entire movie . He totally immerses his viewers in the world he wants you to be in.
I grew up with this movie as a kid from the 80s. I still love it so much. Even my mother ask sometimes: "Remember that movie you always watched with Kurt Russell?" And she is asking about Big Trouble in Little China. I always wished since i was a kid that there would be atleast 2 more sequals. Like Indiana Jones, but with Jack Burton. As always, great reaction and great editing. "Like Jack Burton always says: What the hell."

Fun Fact, Kurt Russell did the voice for Elvis Presley in Forest Gump. It is uncredited role so not many people know.

The look on Sam's face when Jack says "Call the president" made thus completely worth it. Crazy to think half the characters in this movie influenced Mortal Kombat lol
This movie has brilliant writing: Jack is both the main character and the comic relief, often at the same time, w/o the movie being a full blown comedy. He saves the day at the end, thanks to one skill he has, which isn't even a skill, "it's all in the reflexes". And Kurt Russel was born to play Jack.
You have a very low bar for brilliance. This was the stupidest screenplay ever put to film.
I would say that JB has "skills". He figures out creative ways to overcome adversity in an element he is totally unprepared to deal with.

Also, I wonder if they made a reference to Clint Eastwood's Man with No Name from the Dollar Trilogy at the end when Jack Burton leaves. That brown leather purse over his shoulder, where he put Wang's check and the beige jacket suddenly reminded me of Clint Eastwood.
This is definitely Carpenters most fun movie and maybe his best. I love how Kurt Russell pretty much plays a Buffoon thrown into this crazy story, it's so funny.
An overlooked Carpenter movie is Prince of Darkness. It’s a very intellectual horror movie.
Carpenter has a series of non connected movies called The Apocalypse Trilogy, they are in order;
The Thing, Prince of Darkness and In the Mouth of Madness.
Not everyone likes Prince of Darkness but it is a slow burn but it builds dread and suspense til the very end.

So cool 😎 seeing a younger generation enjoying some older movies. Had the pleasure of seeing this in the theater on its release and always loved it. Always thought they could have made a trilogy of movies with Kurt Russell's charachter of Jack Burton...
Once again John Carpenter was ahead of his time by creating the non hero, hero. Completely unexpected by the studios and his audience who didn't understand why Jack Burton's character was such a dweeb.

I love that movie. It is so out there, and Jack is such a odd POV character. Normally we'd probably be following his friend as I think he's the best qualified to be the protagonist, but by instead following Jack who is more a color character it gives us this weird but awesome tone.

A classic, and often overlooked these days.
One of my childhood favourites. Still love it. It's pure madness! So many genes just blended seamlessly and our two main characters are fantastic together. Wang is just awesome. Loved the scene where Jack is desperately trying to get his knife out during a fight but Wang takes care of business by himself. So funny.
Jack Burton is one of my favorite movie characters! Such a goofball and full of confidence.
Kim Cattrall was great back in the 80's, when she always played the "hot but tough girl" role.
And she played the Vulcan in the last original cast movie where she gets mind-raped by Spock...powerful scene.

The fact that Kurt Russel is the comic relief sidekick who thinks he's the main character makes this move better on ever rewatch and solidified James Hong as a national treasure in my eyes.
Slightly less fun fact the hand sign the good guy gang uses got me one day suspension from school because they thought it was a gang sign and weren't in the mood to hear otherwise.

I've been waiting for you guys to watch this one for forever. One of my all time favorite movies. I must've watched this daily growing up. I think it's one of the few movies I can recite word-for-word. Such an underrated classic.

This has been my #1 favorite movie for decades. It's the ultimate mix of entertainment, comedy, action, mysticism, special effects. It's a roller coaster of a film.
When 2 of the design of the characters becomes Raiden and Shang Tsun in Mortal Kombat, you know it's pretty creative !

My favourite line is the "call the president" one. Especially when you find out in the commentary Kurt Russell had majorly come down with flu that day so all his lines were thrashed out early so he could go home. So that line has been rushed by a sick Kurt Russell and its STILL awesome.
Another couple of great Kurt Russell movies are "Overboard" with Goldie Hawn; and "Tango & Cash" with Sylvester Stallone.
Also, the character Rayden from Mortal Kombat is based on the lightning guy from this movie.
One of the few channels I actually watch regular alongside my own content constantly editing etc.

This movie is a family favorite, it's so much fun. The humor in this movie and the kind of 'hero' Jack is, he literally brought a knife to a gun fight. When it came out it got lost in the competition, for one thing , it was the same time Aliens came out.
They also didn't know how to market it. So they didn't. It had almost no advertisng at all.
Prince of Darkness is another great John Carpenter movie. The guys who play Wang and Egg Shen are both in it.
Me and my old man watch this movie all the time when I was growing up it's a truly special movie to me
One of my all time favorites, ever since I first saw it on TV as a kid. Holds up amazingly well too. Creative action scenes, the gags land every time, and the practical creature effects are gnarly.
This is one of my all time favorite movies. I was 8 when this came out and my awesome mom took me to see it. I still love it.
The sheer amount of one liners in this movie is outstanding. Jack Burton earned his place into the 80´s League of Extraordinary Gentlemen. Call the President!
Kurt Russell and John Carpenter made 4 films together. The one everyone forgets is "Elvis"(1979) their first film. Kurt is brilliant playing Elvis.
A John Carpenter film a lot of people forget and is one of his most successful is "Starman"(1984). A beautiful film about an Alien that comes to earth starring Jeff Bridges. Starman is one of Jeff Bridges best performances and he got a well deserved Oscar nod for Best Actor.
One of my dad's all time favorite movies! Because of that, I've seen it quite a few times. I'm so happy to see you two reacting to it!

This has always been one of my favorite movies. My favorite character is Lightning. I thought he looked the coolest with the lightning crackling around him. I used to play RPG's with my sister and some friends and I always gave my characters lightning powers because of him. This movie gave us another badass character named Jack. Burton, Skellington, Sparrow, Bauer, Bristow, Ryan, O'Neill, Shepard, Reacher, Torrance, Frost, Traven, and so many more. And the Hauling ass on his truck is epic.
In 1987 my friends and I drove a 35 foot/10.5 meter motorhome through San Fransisco on our way to return it. We got stuck in an intersection for about 5 minutes trying to turn, going 2 inches forward, turn steering wheel fully, then two inches back, turn steering wheel fully the other way, repeat about 30 times. It was fun. :)
I was 11 when this came out. Really loved it. It became an instant family classic in my house. I got a bunch of other kids to have their parents rent it and everyone i knew loved it. The one liners and their delivery is the standard. SO MANY GOOD ONES !!! May the Wings of Liberty, Never Lose a Feather !!!
You should consider "Starman" next. It is another side of Carpenter in the 80's and his only movie to have an Oscar nomination (for acting).
Rumor is he made Starman to apologize for The Thing being such a horrific monster.

Also the main theme song at the end is John Carpenters band “The Coupe De Villes”. Nick Castle who played Michael Myers & Tommy Lee Wallace who directed Halloween 3 were also in the band. Check out the music video for it! Goddamn I love this movie!

The guys in the hats are the Three Storms. They are servants of the main villain. They are called Thunder, Rain, and Lighting. The characters in this movie were inspiration for Mortal Kombat characters.

Not according to Ed Boon. Only Lightning and Lo Pan were the inspirations for characters in Mortal Kombat. Shang Tsung and Raiden. The rest were based on other characters/celebrities. Kano and his infrared eye are based on the damaged terminator, Liu Kang is based on Bruce Lee, Sonya Blade is based on martial artist Cynthia Rothrock, Johnny Cage is based on Jean Claude Van Damme, and the ninja characters are based on ninjas from Enter The Dragon, American Warrior, and Ninja Gaiden.
Margo, the redhead, was played by Kate Burton (yeah Burton), an actress who's been in a lot of stuff, but the role I most remember her for is as Meredith Grey's mother in "Grey's Anatomy."
This is one of those quiet gems, a superb movie, it's funny, fast paced and totally off the wall. Loved it as a kid, love it now.
For a good Kurt Russell movie you have to watch "Soldier". Truly excellent movie about super soldiers in the future, brought up from birth to fight wars, they're made obsolete by a new generation. Good action movie but also one that goes for the feels too. It's also one not many people have reacted too as it wasn't a huge movie on release but grew to be a cult classic.
Google Soldier and Blade Runner. Rumors say they are set in the same world.

@@snorpenbass4196 yeah but it was never marketed or officially recognised as such. You really think the studio wouldn't have pushed the whole Blade Runner thing in the advertising and marketing? Every time it was mentioned it would have had a "set in the Blade Runner universe" tagline.
Basically it boils down to It having a few cameos like the "spinners" being in both films and Todd being listed as being at some of the battles mentioned by Rutger Hauers character. It was also based on/inspired by a missing scene from Blade Runner but it's not an "official" thing. It's more like references, little nods and the writers head cannon than an official part of the series. The simple fact it was never advertised as being "set in the Blade Runner universe" shows that the most imo. It would have been heavily pushed by the studio if it was officially accepted by the holders of the license. I mean the writers intended it to be a "side universe" story but it was never officially acknowledged as such, that's what I'm getting at.
That jump scare reaction at around 10:12 was the best I have seen in a long time lol. Thank you. Liked and subbed. 👍

I'm glad you enjoyed it as much as I did! This movie is hilarious and the one liners are pretty good! People all over the world still love this movie. There were talks of a Sequel to the movie, starring Dwayne Johnson, as a new character but its been put on hold as the sequel was supposed to be a remake. John Carpenter refused to make it happen, as he didn't want any of his other films, except for Halloween and THE THING, to be remade. There are even comic books that act as a sequel to the movie, with Jack befriending the monster, calling him Clyde, and ends up in one last showdown with LoPan, and even finds out that Snake Plissken (spoiler alert) from Escape From New York is his twin brother in a cross over called BIG TROUBLE IN NEW YORK! Growing up in the 80's I wanted a sequel to Bladerunner , Goonies and this. Bladerunner 2049 happened still waiting for the other two.

Fun fact: both John Carpenter and Kurt Russell agree that the final shot means that Jack is dead about 20 seconds after the credits roll.
as I told you: the most entertaining movie of all times - its a timeless gem :-) NOW "Prince of Darkness" as the next John Carpenter please - sooo intense, thrilling and creepy. LOVE IT

Starlord from Guardians of the Galaxy is based on Jack Burton that you can clearly see, hence Kurt Russell even being his Father in the 2nd Movie.
