Peter Pratt is a seriously under appreciated Master. Without appearing physically due to the mask, He embodied the pure hatred the Master was reduced too and conveyed it perfectly. Whilst Delgado had the charm and of course was THE master, Pratt managed to convey mainly through voice alone what the master was truely capable of doing without any care. Possibly my favourite Master!

I think the main problem for all of the incarnations after Delgardo, Pratt and Beavers was rationalising all 3 very different interpretations as the same character. Ainley and Dahwan succeeded, Gomez and Roberts failed and I don't know what the fuck Simm was doing but it was as akin to the Master as Tennant was to the Doctor. IE no resemblence at all.

@@mrjekyllandhyde9941 : Dr. Who started first airing in my area of the USA in around 1975 (I was around 13yrs old) beginning with *Robot*. Wasn't sure what the regeneration thing was all about, seeing John Pertwee change into Tom Baker in my first ever viewed episode, but read about it in the American fan magazines later. Loved the show from the "get go", but was disappointed when the Doctor never went back to retrieve Sara Jane after this episode. Thought that the BBC gave her the boot for some reason and was bummed out. (Didn't hear the real story until years later.)
Anyway, I was a Tom Baker fan from *The Golden Voyage of Sinbad* (1973 - '74) on and was overjoyed to see him as the Doctor on our teles in '75. I met and got to spend a significant amount of "one on one" time with Ray Harryhausen the last weekend end of May 1993. Ray couldn't say enough good things about Tom or his talent.

One of the weird things this episode implies that's never really been explored is that there are a lot more versions of the Master than we knew about. If he's run out of regenerations it means there's at the very least 10 incarnations we never see on-screen (if we count the kid in the flashback, Delgado and Pratt/Beavers as separate versions). Yet I don't think even the EU has truly explored the implications of it. I think it'd be a neat twist if the next time the Master shows up it's a version a lot earlier in the Doctor's timeline, maybe when he wasn't as insane or Blofeldy

Big Finish actually introduced one of these earlier Masters, and he appeared in The Destination Wars (1DA Vol. 1), The Home Guard (EA #6.1), The Psychic Circus (MA #261), and Blood of the Time Lords (4DA Ser. 11A). Unfortunately, the actor has supported transphobic organizations and made transphobic remarks, so Big Finish will not work with him again. He was actually intended to be the very first Master, but Big Finish carefully retconned that in BotTL with a witty remark by the Doctor that suggests he's a couple of regenerations in.

He burns at the centre of the universe and watches eternity and sees the turn of the universe. And he also responds with gentleness and some humour 'You say that many times sir' and then he says gently 'may I go sir' and the man responds 'certainly you may and with the utmost expedition' and then says 'perhaps you will see that the transduction barrier is erased cassilin' and cassilin (however his name is spelt) says yes sir and as he leaves the man says 'Oh doctor' and the doctor responds 'Sir?' man: 9/10 and the doctor shows himself to be much flattered and says: thank you sir.

@@thesacredlobo : The "thumbs down" are probably by youngsters that just don't get it... or just did it to piss us off. *Dr. Who* was the first "no-budget" show in the UK or the US to transcend it's "handful of shillings and a half-pence" budget and deliver truly riveting Science Fiction television, with superior acting performances. One could argue *Lost in Space* and *Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea* in America, but they had way more money to do those shows... and got really silly with their aliens and storylines. That never happened on *DW*. Not all of the aliens looked the greatest in every episode, but it was not for them trying hard to do what they could. And, they always approached the material in the most serious way possible... and the stories were always the best back then. Make-up effects, costumes and VFX are now at a level that modern audiences often "throw the baby out with the bathwater" when watching retro shows... unless their parents train them properly at a young age. Too bad, as they just *don't* know what they are missing.
