    Excellent journlism , this is so cool to have something like that happen. With so many Iconic musicians having the guitars stolen so many years ago. Maybe this could start a trend, Im sure people know of famous Instruments out there but are too afraid to speak about them. Hopefully channels like this would inspire such a thing. Love your channel keep up the good work .

    You should look into how they recovered Randy Bachman's stolen guitar that went missing in 1976 at a Holiday Inn in Toronto. They used facial recognition software to match photographs of the guitar's unique wood grain patterns.

    If you look close at the Cavern Bass in later Beatles photos it’s sporting a chrome tuning key.
    The key is still on the bass today.
    George Harrison had a guitar fall off a van that was run over by some trucks in the mid 60’s it was a Gretsch.
    However it was reported it was his Country Gentleman that he played on Ed Sullivan.
    When the guitar was smashed Mal Evans picked up the pieces, the neck and tuners, some pickups, etc.
    When a tuning machine on the Cavern Bass broke, Mal replaced it with the Chrome one from the smashed Harrison guitar.
    Harrison’s Gretsch Tennessean has the same tuners that Mal used on the cavern bass.
    The Country Gentleman uses Grover Imperial tuners.
    So the Gent is still out there.

    This was really compelling. Instruments are special and can develop an intimate association with an artist. They deserve to be preserved especially when parted due to a crime. Neat "cold case solved"!

    The Beatles had three guitars stolen from them. George's 65 Rickenbacker 12 string is still MIA since 1969. John's Gibson landed in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame museum more than 50 years after it was stolen. Unfortunately, George's guitar, which was a gift from a local radio station in Minneapolis during a concert tour, came from a guitar shop that neglected to record the serial number on the receipt.

    Thanks! Nice episode on McCartney's bass. Dig the pod's vibe - so I subscribed. Specifically, the Divine Intervention angle - especially in realtion to facts. Very cool indeed. Tons of Divine Intervention sparkle in practically ANY part of The Beatles' story. And now this cjhapter. Bravo ROOTS Music History and Divine Intervention.
    Catch you in the next video.👍

    Paul ordered that bass special order from the Steinway store in Germany.
    Hofner had never made a left handed one before that.

    I find it hard to believe that the pub landlord didn’t know what he had hidden in his cellar. Paul McCartney put out pleas for its return within days of it being stolen in the local papers and everyone read the newspaper back then. I believe the landlord knew what he had and who it belonged to. His sons probably did too and probably his son was a big Beatles fan who got to keep it for that reason and probably knowing that Paul was advertising the fact his very famous violin bass was stolen and now all if a sudden they’re selling a violin bass made it too hot the sell. The family that still had it hidden in their attic for 52 years. They knew or at least the landlord knew!

    • @EnvyBlu
      @EnvyBlu Před 2 měsíci

      Exactly. I’m sure they knew how valuable that bass guitar was, hence the reason they kept it in the same family for decades 🤬

  • @nyncompute
    @nyncompute Před 6 měsíci +1

    History aside, one thing neglected in these stories about the bass is its value. A Stradivarius violin has nothing on the value of that Hofner. I would venture to say it has become the most valuable guitar in history.

    (I speak spanish please translate and to read my comment) En el mv de ‘Now and Then’ estrenado el 3 de noviembre 2023, aparecen dos bajos Hofner. En el minuto 1:52 y en el minuto 2:23. En el mv se ve el Hofner recién recuperado, de 1961, cerca de la pierna derecha de Paul, o quizá sea una réplica pues no se sabe exactamente si Paul ya tenía su Hofner cuando hicieron el mv.
    El Hofner de 1963 está al lado izquierdo de Paul. Se dice que el bajo apareció a fines de septiembre 2023, pero pienso que esto se mantuvo oculto para no opacar el lanzamiento de ‘Now and Then’.
    PS: Tu video es excelente, es el mejor, entendí mejor la historia del paramédico. Solo te sugiero veas las diferencias entre el bajo Hofner de 1961 y el bajo Hofner de 1963. En las fotos que pones en tu video ( minuto 2:28 y minuto 2:44) se ve el bajo Hofner de 1963, ese NO es el que fue robado en octubre 1972. Paul siempre tuvo su bajo Hofner de 1963.

      Nick Wass había escrito un libro sobre el bajo de cuerpo de tipo violín Höfner modelo 500/1 que se desapareció en los sesentas. En conversación con la BBC, Nick Wass dijo que la campaña para encontrar el bajo había comenzado cuando McCartney le preguntó por el famoso instrumento que le robaron en octubre de 1972. El libro se llama *‘HOFNER: THE COMPLETE VIOLIN BASS STORY’* by Steve Russell & Nick Wass, publicado el 1 de mayo 2013. 320 páginas. Ilustrado.
      *REVIEW OF BOOK*
      The Hofner Violin Bass Guitar is one of the most instantly recognizable musical instruments ever made. Its fame was assured when a certain young English guitarist walked into a shop in Hamburg in 1961, saw exactly what he was looking for, and ordered a left-handed version. The rest, as they say, is history. Also known as "The Beatle Bass," or more formally as the "500/1 Model," Walter Hofner's creation has acquired a loyal following of enthusiastic owners all over the world. This fully illustrated book charts the complete history of the Violin Bass, beginning with the rebirth of the Hofner Company after the Second World War and the conception of the bass in 1955. Its development over the years is described, including the full story of the re-issue models. Finally, the Contemporary and Ignition models are covered, as is the surprise appearance of a Union Jack bedecked Violin Bass at the 2012 Queen Elizabeth II Jubilee Concert in the hands of Sir Paul McCartney. The Complete Hofner Violin Bass Story has been produced using the Hofner Company archives, and with help from, and a foreword by, Walter Hofner's daughter Gerhilde. The book provides the reader with a unique insight into this famous bass guitar, and of the many people who have influenced its path over the last 60 years. Also covers: dating a violin bass, serial numbers, body dates, pickup information and much more. A must have book for all collectors 320 pages!

    Why do you keep showing pictures of the wrong bass? There are plenty of pictures of McCartney’s first Hofner. I saw way more pictures of Paul’s 1963 Hofner than the stolen 1961 Hofner in your video. I appreciate the story but it doesn’t really sound like you know the difference between Paul’s main Hofner that he used from 1963, and still uses today, and the stolen 1961 bass that was stolen in 1972. There are so many details to the story and Paul’s use of his Hofners that you neglected. Can i get my 30 minutes back please? I’m glad Paul got the 61 Hofner back, but the way the story was told in this video was sort of unintentionally funny. Just my opinion.
