- An emotional moment at Glastonbury 2010 when Ray Davies dedicates "Days" to the memory of Pete Quaife, the original Kinks bassist, who passed away on 24 June 2010.
Playlist:
1. "Waterloo Sunset"
2. "Days" at 3:45 - Hudba
I love how emotional Ray is at the start of Days. Two great songs. Nothing wrong with a little sentimentality in my book.
I am not even British, yet Ray Davies' music has always moved me deeply. He is a people's poet.
I thank God that I have been on this planet at the same time in history as Ray Davies.
I agree. What I want to know is why he hasn't been knighted.
and David Bowie!
I don' t beleave in God. But I thank him too.
So true
Well Put. Me Too. 🙏
Possibly one of the best songs ever written. And as for days it’s going to be played at my funeral.
What blew me away was that he 's singing and playing in the same key that he did it with the Kinks 40 whatever years ago.
No he isn't.
Ray is a national treasure. My childhood would have been poorer without his beautiful songs.
bigtone1348 So unbelievably underrated.
Always giving me shivers down my back🍀😍
Same here mate. Some amazing songs with beautiful words, which we could all relate to at the time. Just Fantastic to hear them again, especially Waterloo Sunset, and Days....
Bless you my friend~ Your words got to me. You make the eWorld a better place 😁
Mine as well
Very touching tribute to Pete. The original Kinks lineup was damn close to being as good as the Beatles in my opinion.
Also The Beatles had much better sound engineering. Compare the sound of their 1967 albums. Or even 1965. It’s really sad, because the Kinks music itself is brilliant.
Ray Davies should be England's poet laureate.
dgrichmondbc Appreciate the sentiment but Ray Davies IS England's poet laureate
If Bob Dylan can have a Nobel prize ...
In October last year my wife of 50 years marriage passed away and Days was, played at the Cremation service. This performance of the fantastic song was magic and brought back memories and tears to my eyes.
Sorry for your loss, can imagine that "Days" offered you some solace...
Some artists just transcend rock music and become so uniquely legendary through their material. No laser beams, no smoke machines, no dancers. Ray Davies (and The Kinks) were these artists. This is a festival audience and they know the lyrics to his songs. Some not yet born when they were hits. Absolutely stunning. Ray never fails to send chills down my spine. Bless you Ray Davies.
John LaStrada I just love this band and this song
yep me too bring me to teers
John LaStrada
Arise Sir Ray. A true English poet.....
Absolutely.
Tho" I have no doubts that had Kinks been part of the first of second wave Britpop (ie Blur or Franz Ferdinand) they would've donned all the confetti required, and fitted in perfectly
(Just try, mention one Kinks song that does not befit the Britpop Saga. . .)
That 2:51, "So am I", interjection makes me cry everytime I hear this.
Still sends a tingle up my spine hearing this tribute to a good friend.
Not one Kinks song sounds dated
Gallon of gas sounds a little dated, but still a great song I listen to it to try to work out
At the very moment he choked up at the beginning of Days, all the glory and awesomeness of the Kinks hit home right THEN and there. So moving and poignant
Beautifully said. I choke up when he does every single time.
Waterloo Sunset almost always moves me close to tears, this version finally drove me all the way.
However, not far enough.
"Days" does that to me
It looked like Ray was ready to cheer up. He looks really emotional in the beginning of the song. But he's been emotional with every song throughout his career
How very English and only 6 years ago , i wonder what our new Marxist overlords would say now .
@@zethraelofteldrassil3149 me too.
RIP Pete Quaife, true Kinks fans will always remember you and thank you as you co-founded one of the greatest and most influential British groups in our history, and your bass playing was so underrated. Ray, you really are something else - truly one of our greatest songwriters ever.
It breaks my heart when Ray start to sing Days... :(
1967: This song is great!
2022: THIS SONG IS LEGENDARY!
God save The Kinks. I cannot tell you what their music has meant to me in my lifetime.
"every day i look to the world from my window". surely one of the best lines ever !!!
That was the best line up: the Davies brothers, Pete Quaife and Mick Avory.
Yep, it takes a whole chorale here to match the backing vocals those boys put down in the 60s.
Sir Ray Davies. Has a nice ring to it. Most songwriters would be lucky to write three or four classic songs during their career. Ray must have written at least 50. Many of the B sides of The Kinks songs are stunning and still sound fresh more than 50 years after they were written. God Bless Ray Davies and The Kinks. They make me proud to be British. Pete Quaife R.I.P. A superb musician. Just listen to the riffs he played.
Old Guys Still Rock I'm Not Like Anybody Else - B side to Sunny Afternoon.
+Old Guys Still Rock Ray is a Labour man and has refused two honours so far. Make him the Poet Laureate because he always has been.
Alongside Bowie, Lennon and McCarthy he has been England's greatest lyricist, imo.
Tis a pity Harold Eugene Clark from The Byrds couldn't get a knighthood...American counterpoint to Ray in so many ways...
WOW! Ray Davies still has the beautiful voice from the 60s co spidering his age in 2010, he has done well, well done Ray Davies. You deserved your knighthood
What a fucking legend. What incredible songs... He may be singing them on Mars in 200 years and yet wouldn't lose none of the freshness and the wonder... 👏👏👏👏
Everybody strains their eyes to see, but I see you and you see me, now ain’t that wonder…
The English equivalent of Dylan. His and The Kinks' back catalogue is/are quite outstanding. Captured the real spirit of being in London in the 1960's. A remarkable songwriter whose songs still sound so fresh and interesting. Thanks Ray 😋
Couldn't have put it any better myself.
I was born in Waterloo (1955), I've seen more than one sunset, Ray's words are forever in my soul - thanks Ray
Saw the Kinks opening for the Who at the Kinetic Playground in Chicago, 1969 I think. Marvelous show, and when the Who came out, they dedicated their set to the KInks. Two great, great bands.
I was there. How's that for a double bill?
Wow, just mind blowing....
Waterloo sunset imo is the best song ever written
Frank Mccallum Probably the perfect song
Ok ....but why is it the best song ever witten?
I am Kinks fan and a Beatles fan but stop saying this is best or that is best without saying why...
+de mazzelaar ! "Opinions" dude.
@@demazzelaar8018 he did include the "imo" so it is a perfectly valid statement. I happen to agree. At least i cant think of anything i enjoy listening to more off the top of my head.
i love it but its not even the best song by the kinks imo
Amazing how after all these years the voice has held up better then many others. And the songs. They will last.
Indeed. And in 2010 he could go for a couple of hours. I saw him in a small theater in Chicago in March of 2010. He did a long acoustic set solo, with a lot of audience participation. Then he brought out a band and went through all the Kinks hits, and did Lola for an encore. I was hoarse for 2 days from the sing along.
Robert Pullman Same here, but at the Vic Theater here in Chicago in April 2006. It was magical. Met him after when he came out to the stage after the show and met fans. He was absolutely lovely.
He's on a par with Lennon and McCartney as a song writer. Brilliant. Deserved his knighthood.
Easily better
At " least" on a par
Totally agree he deserved the knighthood. A wonderful songwriter. On a par with Lennon and McCartney is a stretch to me though. The quality of music they churned out in such a short time and while on tour between 63 and 66 is stunning. But to each their own. All great music
I am a Lennon/McCartney fanatic and I think Ray may well be better than them.
@@IainTheWizard Ray was doing it all on his own and pretty much producing it too. Ray is our Brian Wilson.
Ray and the Kinks so underrated just brilliant.
Yet another VVANQUER using the word under-rated. As if THEY know more than the rest of us.
Just look at the audience ya dikk-head.
Still one of the most beautiful songs ever written and recorded.
A treasure in America too for those of us lucky enough to be in the know. High School in the early 70s would not have been the same. We love you across the pond!!
Uptown theater summer 1979 incredible show.
Ray Davies is absolutely the nicest guys and one of the smartest singer/songwriter/musician/producer in the business and one of my favorites for sure...
wasnt very nice to his brother...
Kyle Chase true, especially when birthday cake is involved
Even though I’m a big fan. He really isn’t known to be a nice guy. Read Dave’s book “Kink”. I’m sure he’s mellowed with age though.
He's not a nice guy. Unsympathetic. Lot of bands witnessed about his behaviour during concerts tours. Big Respect for his writing, however.
Hope the youngsters in the audience realised they were watching and listening to a genius.
Greatest underated songwriter ever
Do you really think he's under rated ?, Most people rate Ray as one of the greatest song writers that ever lived.
@@southerner4566 I agree, my English professor said the same in 1968 after Days came out .
THE man really ought to be honoured...the guy was certainly the backdrop to my life in it's formative years...his really clever lyrics strongly contributed to the feel of the 60s/70s...and in hindsight his influence has been greatly underestimated....
Ray, if you read this...thank you for the days...
Always a pleasure to hear Ray Davies songs.
Very emotional, a real hommage to the peacekeeper of the Kinks.
Millions of people swarming like fly's round RAY DAVIES !! because he's the best !!!
Ray is a charming, charismatic performer. saw him at mountain winery in saratoga, california a few weeks ago. still can rock out, too.
Great guy - great music. Always got the impression that Ray Davies was very intelligent. Not being very intelligent myself, I might not be the best judge. But I think I'm right this time at least
A true artist.
Thank you for saving my life so many times. Beginning in my childhood. I love you so much
how can you not smile
Saw him in a pub in Chicago in 2001 where he dedicated this song to Dave who apparently said, “say hello to the yanks for me,” upon hearing he was doing a US tour. One of my fondest memories.
Anyone else cry when Ray tears up at 4:08? I was already a huge Ray Davies and The Kinks fan as a young teen in the early 70s when not many of my friends were listening to him/them. And I was glad of that, because the music felt more personal for me. I was glad that no huge tidal wave of popularity was taking The Kinks away from me. I didn't have to share them with people who just hopped on board the next "popular-to-like-so-an-so" train. When Ray wrote "Misfits" he wrote it for me. And for all of you here commenting on this page, my fellow Misfits. I remember purchasing the Kinks Kronicles double album at my town's record store. I was about 13 years old at the time and the girl behind the counter (an older 18-sh year-old girl with a dirty girl look and a sweater full of goodies and whom I was secretly madly in love with) made sort of an odd face when I handed her the album. She looked at it, flipped it over a few times, then just looked at me and said, "You know this is a double album, right?" I guess she thought a little squirt like me didn't know what I was buying and didn't have the money for it. Lol! I opened it up the moment I got home, listened to it a thousand times on my record player while reading the print right off the liner notes! I got to see The Kinks on several occasions, once at a smaller venue in Upstate NY in 1981 and had the honor of shaking Ray's hand from the general admission first row that I had managed to move up to. Thank you from the bottom of my heart, Mr. Davies. And no, Ray, you're "not like everybody else". God Save The Kinks!!
Wonderful story, thank you.
Ray actually learned about Pete's death whilst on stage at Glastonbury, only minutes before this. He says it here: czcams.com/video/dbgJO_ZIbKc/video.html
brought tears to my eyes ...they were my favourite band of the 60's ...God bless Peter Quaife
springsteen had some balls calling himself the boss at glasto last year, especially in rays presence-the real boss, sprigsteen would be lucky to make a sales supervisor with ray playing on the same stage.
how amazing he is . this song brings a wave of memories and reminds me of my roots in London hackney
Very moving and to see all those young people singing along pure performance.
Gorgeous Ray. Simply Gorgeous.
You're something else, Raymond.
I get sentimental over this and I'm not even English.
I play bass and PQ has grown on me over the years. I've learned from him--and from JD of course. Just Kinks in general. Good bass.
Rock on, man!
RIP Beautiful Pete! This is a beautiful tribute....
this gentleman goes so far beyond what you see in front of you it's unreal. A legend to British music.
One of the greatest ever ..the kinks are as great as anyone...songs go through you....real genius...literary he is.
A great artist. I love the Kinks since 1965. I was born in 1955.The way Ray Davies remembers Peter is beyond believe.
Waterloo Sunset always makes Me smile and Days was played at My Sister in Law's funeral, it really does mean a lot to Me, and also meant a lot to My Brother who passed earlier this year.and dedicated this to his Wife, Thank's Ray.
The Kinks played for 30 years. They changed with the times but never sacrificed their sound.
Totally agree, 60s 70s 80s awesome band to say the least!
A World treasure Ray Davies is!
Absolutely beautiful no other words needed
I love the man. He touched my life. I thank the universe for Ray Davies.
Beyond beautiful. God bless The Kinks and Ray and Dave Davies a gift to the world
Stunningly beautiful..How lucky I am to have experienced life at a level where I could appreciate this artful genius...
Best version of Days I've ever heard - truly EPIC performance.
Tears in my eyes.. everytime.
OMG...I LOVE the Kinks
Sir Ray Rocks!!!!
That choir is a great choice, really lifts up this superb classic!
kinks albums are brilliant. keep rocking xx
The moment at 4:12 when he has sung the opening line and then pulls away from the mic to control his reaction has me in tears every time.
That just floored me.
Indeed. He dedicated the tunes to Pete Quaife, who had died soon before this concert. Pete and Ray were lifelong friends. Surely, his emotions were for Peter.
He wrote the song about and to his mistress when she left him after he refused to leave his wife and marry her. His mistress, who was also married.
I love this song. Maybe it has evolved for him over the years. But originally it wasn't an innocent love ballad.
A songwriting genius.
The genius that is Ray Davies. Now go and see Sunny Afternoon in the West End in London- brilliant.
Good God! THAT was an emotional explosion. As a Scottish/Italian I am SO happy to see someone freeing the English from their emotional shackles. These two songs are pure magic....and did JUST that!!!
God bless xx
Pure magic, memories, magnificent... it reminds me of my school days...
Still going - and still packing them in.
The kinks and the doors way way ahead of their time and will last way way long in the future
Hey Muswell Hillbilly Ray, I just want to say thanx..... Two masterpieces. So emotional.
His voice still sounds great here!🙂
that's when the music was a real music...
May God bless the younger generations that they may have musicians and writers as we did
There's a billion great songs on CZcams.
This is one of the greatest of the great. Songs to treasure all the days of our lives. Timeless. Perfect.
Can't put into words how great this performance is. Living legend Ray Davies
Thanks Ray and God Bless you.
Lessening to this song I am in paradise ! Amazing kinks !
Rest In Peace Pete. You will be always with us in these songs.
God bless the Kinks. So under rated
Only came across "I'm not like everybody else" the other day. The legend of The Kinks grows. This man is a genius.
I will ever love this music. Magic tunes. Thanks so much Ray
Amazing versitility in the melodies. The same songs sound as great in a headbanging rock genre or with a cathedral choir backing.
thank you for the days
I was in a state of chills all the way through that.
ray daves thank u for putting this song on it makes me cry and my dad
The Kinks are my favourite band of all time. RIP Peter Quaife. You are a legend and will never be forgotten.
No one like Sir Ray Davies...he made my teenage years Full of happiness on music issues even 4 decades after He keep being my favorite.
