A unique band that raised the intellectual bar for rock and roll audiences by expecting them to understand Davies tongue in cheek, poetically quirky lyrics and stories. Davies rarely wrote lyrics with boy-girl themes. He's a story teller. And he did it with one of the most clever bands in R&R history.
They are under-rated. Became a Kinks follower when I was 15. Seen them lots since then. This concert is from before I got into them. Fun band with quality.
Right up there with the greatest of all-time. In terms of songwriting, my list of the greatest is short... Ray Davies, Pete Townshend, Lennon/Harrison/McCartney, Thom Yorke, maybe a few others.
I saw these guys at the Community Concource in San Diego in 1975. Ray Davies looked like he couldn't be happier than to be performing to the intimate crowd that night. I found out later that a friend of mine fixed Ray's guitar and got a backstage pass. He didn't want to give up that pass and had it framed.
This might be the best live video of The Kinks on CZcams, it's in good quality, has an immaculate selection of songs and is performed so well. I love Ray Davies flamboyant coked up stage persona he's got going here.

I know music critics like to lump The Kinks with The Beatles and The Stones, but when I listen to them, they sound completely different. Ray was ahead of it’s time in terms of songwriting and musical arrangements. He was also better singer than his peers, IMO.
I just cannot agree with him being a better singer than his peers. Paul McCartney, John Lennon, and Roger Daltrey all had way more power and range. Ray has a beautiful voice but it shines on the calmer, quieter songs. Paul, John, and Roger all shined when they really cut loose. Why Don’t We Do It In The Road - Paul, Twist and Shout - John, Love, Reign O’er Me - Roger. I do agree with everting else though. Ray was an amazing songwriter, arranged beautiful music, and was way ahead of his time. Just don’t think he was a better singer than The Who or Beatles. Better than the Stones, for sure, because Mick was not technically a good singer.
