U don’t need to attack the uploader She put a disclaimer to say no horse or riders were seriously injured at the scene meaning u don’t witness pain. All horses after going out on the corse r checked over as the have been galloping and jumping off uneven ground so any injuries would be found.❤️
The course designer didn't intend for this many problems to happen but there were so many first time eventers in 5* Eventing. It's the hardest and highest level there is so the course needs to be challenging.
Keun Kkum I understand that 5 stars are supposed to be challenging but if you compare this to this years Kentucky three day event, there were far more accidents at burghley-far more than can be attributed to first time 5* riders I think. Advanced and experienced riders still had trouble with this course. A course should be challenging but this just looked unsafe as you could tell a lot of the horses were unsure of how to tackle the questions. The white oxer combination especially seemed hard for the horses to grasp and I think it was just asking too much. The frangible pins are a great idea but it doesn’t mean we should be making the fences bigger and the combinations more difficult.
This course was not too difficult for the horses, the course designer would not have it designed that way. It’s meant to challenge the horse and rider. Some of the questions were very hard but that’s what eventing is. Its meant to test the abilities of the horse and rider and sometimes you fall in the process. If you look at the stats of the show most riders don’t finish the show.
after the horse and rider got off of the course the horse would have been checked over by a vet and made sure that there was nothing that could be of harm and if something came up later on i am certain that the rider would have gotten a vet to be safe
I was just about to comment on this video just about that. I was going to say that it’s brilliant the technology that’s gone in to the jumps as some of those falls could have been so much worse than what they were for the horse. Still wouldn’t find me jumping at this height though, even though we are both capable.
I think the hardest course I’ve ever seen hands down is the World Equestrian Games 2002. The course was so hard that none of the riders did the fast route for the second water jump and one rider did the shortcut at the bullpen and was forced to drop out after two refusals. Everyone had time penalties as a result, not including how many refusals happened on the rest of the course.
HorseLifeWithFloor horses are my stables were trained to stand still if anything like that happened. There’s still the odd few that still gallop off but I don’t blame them tbh
yes! the trust these horses and riders have for each other is remarkable. i don’t blame any of these fails on the rider or horse- completely the course designers
a bit smaller and with a significantly longer route to it. Now it was straight after another difficult big jump, a tight corner and from an angle the horse couldn't see the whole jump until right at it. Those jumps weren't fair to these horses.
It was more of a foot misplacement, and the rider was probably nervous as well (anyone would be did you see that jump) so the rider probably acknowledged it was their fault and didn’t want to punish the horse for something like that
Ikr sadly when you are riding many people push you to punish a horse for a refusal even if it was your fault. I got bitched out for not whipping a green mare over a jump. It's a good way to ruin a horses nerves.
@@jadenonnel8528 I trained my arabian (he was abused before i got him) and he’s 24 right now, and i can’t hit him, because if i do anytime i move my arm he flinches so bad, and due to this instead, everytime he acts up i just re do something over and over and when he gets it he gets a massive reward and now he’s an amazing horse. He may not know as much as an old warm blood hunter, but he will follow you without a lead rope and i never taught him liberty. Positive rewards are better than negative punishment by a long shot

I'm pretty sure the horse at 2:23 injured his neck. The way he got up and walked with his head held stiff and low... looks awful. And the other rider stuck with his horse laying on him... ouch! Didn't like this video
after the horse and rider got off of the course the horse would have been checked over by a vet and made sure that there was nothing that could be of harm and if something came up later on i am certain that the rider would have gotten a vet to be safe
My goodness, who on earth is the course builder of Burghley H. Trials?? Horrific lines of complexes and fences. Are they deliberately trying to injury the noble, generous horse? Or do they not ride themselves shocking and so depressing for the poor equines.
The Werewolf of Wagga Wagga 2:39 especially this rider. I jump to with my horse but I have never had to hit my horse to get over the jump. I don’t really see the need to hit. If your horse can’t jump it, the only thing you are doing with hitting then is forcing your horse to get over it. It may bring you and your horse in danger.
I do not condone unnecessarily beating or hitting an animal for any reason but when you event sometimes a tap or smack with a crop is needed to give your horse some getup and go especially at upper levels they are not beating their horses.
@@julianacaggiano I agree that a small tap or reminder is necessary but sometimes it is really really hard over and over again. Repetitively using their whole arm to scare the horse into the jumps. There's one rider in particular who always does this but I forget her bame
This video just illustrates all that's wrong with eventing now...it's a show jumping course over uneven ground with more intimidating fences. It's grotesque how some of the riders were chasing at their horses upsetting their balance right before the leap, and just looking like a bunch of desperate cowboys..it was scary and seemed so irresponsible to ask those brave and honest horses to trust a rider that would even ask them to do that course.
I do eventing but even I draw the line at courses like these. They are designed for glory and praise and not the safety of the animals that gives you that glory. So sad. I never hope to go this big as it is just not fair the the horse in my opinion.
I agree... silly fences, poor Horses... can't people and riders that if horses have a bunch of qualities, they can't fly ? And plus one on the useless Cowboys... Real Cowboys would do better... by running around the fences. ^^
Maryssa LeBlanc yep! Saved a bunch of people who could have easily had a rotational. The fences, thank god, are designed to fall apart when the horse hits them. They have a sort of safety pin that holds the jump but collapses when hit. Saving many of what could be rotationals.. ❤️
that white corner is on a world champion ship course it was meant to test the horse and rider I agree it was a harsh course but it was built to see how they handle harsh lines and fences
I really want to ride cross country when I’m older, and I just started with the base of it with my horse. But I will never ever beat my horse over a jump like this. Its also terrible to see how some riders go on after they failed a jump miserably
I could barely watch the oxers and open corners at the maltings!! Everyone seemed to be really struggling to hit them on a good stride and we’re getting super deep to them all eeek
I think the horse was trying to get over the jump and got his hoof caught on the martingale, I don't think it was super loose but I don't know, still important to check that everything fits
Personally, if I saw how many rounds could’ve ended in a broken leg or even worse, I would not have even considering riding this course as anyone can see it’s badly put together. However I commend these riders on how well they handled the situations. I think that it must be so so tough to ride a course like this when you’ve qualified for burghley. However this course was just not it. Cross country is meant to be challenging and is very dangerous however so many issues could’ve been solved here. So many rotational falls it’s ridiculous
I used to be an equestrian, I was born with an infinite passion for horses, I took horse riding lessons, started to compete as a child, then I started doing eventing, coaching students, training horses, all this over a 20 year period. One day I was teaching and I seriously started to doubt the ethics of what we are doing to those animals. In the end, it came down to teaching people who just want to win ribbons and championships, some with money and doing this for social standing, once in a while someone who really loved horses but generally it is a very egotistical pursuit. My coach tried to push me to drug my horse after the cross country, to be sure he would pass the vet test the next day... I didn't do it. I also worked with race horses and the horrors that take place there in the name of money are unspeakable. I quit it all after 20 years, starting at 9 years of age, and quitting at 29. I love horses free, free to be what they are not some instrument to ego gratification. Do you really need to risk their lives? all for a ribbon or a trophy? this video shows incredibly treacherous obstacles, and not so qualified riders... it breaks my heart

Right, well ok... let me put it this way: if this is the standard of what's good in cross-country, then it's an abusive sport, on a par with racing, steeplechase and that disgusting thing that's done to the Tennessee Walker. I am an eventer… meaning I do cross country. However, even I draw the line when it becomes permanently damaging or dangerous to the horse. I never hope to jump this high as I don’t feel it is fair to them at all!

H e a r t B r e a k e r I had checked to make sure all horses were not injured after the competition. I think he either just couldn't get up or he was in shock. There was also a clip straight after this showing the horse and rider walking away.
It looks more like the horse knows the rider is under him and is waiting for help, if he kept rolling the rider would be done for. It happen to me once, I flip with my horse over a jump, I landed under her, she threw herself to the side to avoid me.
ok, the fact that most horses knocked over, flipped, or refused the same exact jumps probably means they aren't suitable jumps. I know it's high level but the exact same jumps got refused or knocked over by almost all the horses.
I love cross country and I love the gopro video's etc but this course and many others seem way and way to difficult. I know it's a high level of cross country but this is too difficult.
Lot of tough jumps! A lot of these horses are remarkably calm about a fall or a spill, though. They just kinda walk or wait for their riders to get back up. Shows the relationship they have.
Actually, stunned is more like the truth. When a horse hangs a leg or has a rotational fall they, like humans, are blindsided. Don't anybody kid themselves these horses walked away in onr piece mentally and/or physically. I evented for 10+ years and horses are affected by those bad things that happen accidentally or by bad riding.

What a brutal course so many falls, refusals, run outs, horses falling all at the same lot of jumps, that was a tad hard to watch but I definitely take my hat off to all the riders competing and their horses giving it their all 😊
Moral of the story: The more you kick, yell at and hit your horse before a jump, the higher the chances of a refusal or injury. 3:41 Check how when the horse gets up he moves away from the rider, probably because he knew he was in trouble. Jumping is tons of fun when you have a balanced and eager horse and a relatively reasonable course. I’m a jumper so I do things around 3’ for shows but I’m working up to four feet at home. This looks like the kind of course I’d never make my horse go through though.

Flailing arms, (I’m afraid if he flaps them any faster he’ll fly right off the horse!) pumping body, (I know what drivers seat is but that was excessive) and the yanking! Oh the yanking! Well,I have been riding English style for almost 40 years. Although I started with jumping, of course amateur lebel, in the last years I only enjoyed long rides in the country with.my beloved horse. I believe both horse and rider must have good time and relax and no rider should risk a horse just for his own interest
I think Badminton Horse Trials' course designers make some very attractive fences, but sometimes, they just don't seem that safe. I know they've since introduced frangible pins on these fences, and rightly so, but they're oftentimes still ostentaciously wide or large. Do they really need to be that big and daunting? Must be scary when coming off over one of these fences.
It is amazing how powerful these animals are but really hitting them over these difficult jumps is just a bit over the top. Horses have some hard vision in which they estimate the distances and it’s so amazing how most of these horses clear such huge heights and distances
Good comment re horses' vision. Recently a book was published noting in it a study regarding how a horse's vision works. Turns out they have pretty poor vision, e.g. show jumpers which consistently want to position their heads high coming up to a jump. It also explains (sorta) about their tendencies to spook at dangerous objects like a wayward leaf or a menacing pebble.
Very tough trials for horses & I don't think it is ok for horses & riders, especially the water points seems insane for horses to cover. Is there any limit where we can limit our race & thirst to win?

When I was doing cross country, the jumps were fully solid. No giveaway . This is a really great idea because I had a bad accident because of it and am still paying For it today. (Horse was okay, I cushioned his fall)

Manny jumps are way to hard to “see” for the horses so they don’t know how high and wide they have to jump and most of the riders are riding very poor, especially how they are sitting on their horses and how they support their horses (more not support them, or even make it harder for the horse)
why do they make cross country courses so challenging when the riders clearly are used to smaller jumps, therefore accidently put the horse off balance before the jump. there were so many instances where the striding was so completely off that there was no possible way the horses could have jumped the jump well. of course i am not meaning that the riders aren't good ones, i'm sure they probably are , but this level is just way too challenging for them and their horses.
The white corner was very high and not a tight enough turn for the horses to be able to judge. Personally I think they should have Made it slightly lower or atleast a more sever angle so they can see it better
Neither pretty nor entertaining to watch. Did the course designer not get some of the fences right or would some of the rider/horse combinations been better off in a 4 Star competition?
I think it was a mix of both, mainly first time 5* eventer combinations that fell off. Maybe some rider misalignment as well but some of the fences were big, I was there in person but nothing too exceptionally challenging.

I love eventing but the courses for this event were clearly never designed with the horse and rider’s safety in mind. It doesn’t matter how plastic or “safe” you make your jumps, riders and horses still get hurt because of irresponsible course makers.

i’ve been riding for half my life & while cross country can be fun & exciting (i’ve done it myself), i think it’s just too risky & harsh for both the horses & the riders, it looks like they barely have any control

It is supposed to be extremely intense. You just have to really work hard to be good enough🙂

@@martinap6728 I think horse at 2:23 was doing that because the bridle slipped forwards and his ear was stuck underneath it
All of the horses were thoroughly checked by vets afterwards and there were no injuries. They take them off the course immediately when this happens.

Some of the jumps that broke saved the riders and horses from bad injuries, if some them wouldn’t of broken, no idea what could of happened.

This is way to intense. Can easily see how horses break bones and get severely injured.

that white corner is on a world champion ship course it was meant to test the horse and rider I agree it was a harsh course but it was built to see how they handle harsh lines and fences

I really want to ride cross country when I’m older, and I just started with the base of it with my horse. But I will never ever beat my horse over a jump like this.
Its also terrible to see how some riders go on after they failed a jump miserably

I could barely watch the oxers and open corners at the maltings!! Everyone seemed to be really struggling to hit them on a good stride and we’re getting super deep to them all eeek

I think the horse was trying to get over the jump and got his hoof caught on the martingale, I don't think it was super loose but I don't know, still important to check that everything fits

Personally, if I saw how many rounds could’ve ended in a broken leg or even worse, I would not have even considering riding this course as anyone can see it’s badly put together.
However I commend these riders on how well they handled the situations. I think that it must be so so tough to ride a course like this when you’ve qualified for burghley.
However this course was just not it. Cross country is meant to be challenging and is very dangerous however so many issues could’ve been solved here.

I used to be an equestrian, I was born with an infinite passion for horses, I took horse riding lessons, started to compete as a child, then I started doing eventing, coaching students, training horses, all this over a 20 year period. One day I was teaching and I seriously started to doubt the ethics of what we are doing to those animals. In the end, it came down to teaching people who just want to win ribbons and championships, some with money and doing this for social standing, once in a while someone who really loved horses but generally it is a very egotistical pursuit.
My coach tried to push me to drug my horse after the cross country, to be sure he would pass the vet test the next day... I didn't do it.
I also worked with race horses and the horrors that take place there in the name of money are unspeakable.
I quit it all after 20 years, starting at 9 years of age, and quitting at 29. I love horses free, free to be what they are not some instrument to ego gratification. Do you really need to risk their lives? all for a ribbon or a trophy?

I am an eventer… meaning I do cross country. However, even I draw the line when it becomes permanently damaging or dangerous to the horse. I never hope to jump this high as I don’t feel it is fair to them at all!

H e a r t B r e a k e r I had checked to make sure all horses were not injured after the competition. I think he either just couldn't get up or he was in shock. There was also a clip straight after this showing the horse and rider walking away.
It looks more like the horse knows the rider is under him and is waiting for help, if he kept rolling the rider would be done for. It happen to me once, I flip with my horse over a jump, I landed under her, she threw herself to the side to avoid me.

Absolutely agree. I know one horse died (it was even the level under this) and the rider said the horse mistook the jump as a bounce
ok, the fact that most horses knocked over, flipped, or refused the same exact jumps probably means they aren't suitable jumps. I know it's high level but the exact same jumps got refused or knocked over by almost all the horses.
It’s awful to see people using horses mouths to carry them over long jumps that they set the horses up for to begin with. 😥😢
They are fine they get great treatment and care and they love going over the jumps you can tell how excited they are until they get hurt.

I love cross country and I love the gopro video's etc but this course and many others seem way and way to difficult. I know it's a high level of cross country but this is too difficult.

Lot of tough jumps! A lot of these horses are remarkably calm about a fall or a spill, though. They just kinda walk or wait for their riders to get back up. Shows the relationship they have.

Actually, stunned is more like the truth. When a horse hangs a leg or has a rotational fall they, like humans, are blindsided. Don't anybody kid themselves these horses walked away in onr piece mentally and/or physically. I evented for 10+ years and horses are affected by those bad things that happen accidentally or by bad riding.
@2:20 wow that could’ve been so much worse! I get worried for my horse is she rolls her ankle in a miss step, I would be a wreck if I didn’t cross country. These horses are amazing athletes, some of these jumps made me wonder what they were thinking with design though.
What a brutal course so many falls, refusals, run outs, horses falling all at the same lot of jumps, that was a tad hard to watch but I definitely take my hat off to all the riders competing and their horses giving it their all 😊
Moral of the story: The more you kick, yell at and hit your horse before a jump, the higher the chances of a refusal or injury.

Jumping is tons of fun when you have a balanced and eager horse and a relatively reasonable course. I’m a jumper so I do things around 3’ for shows but I’m working up to four feet at home. This looks like the kind of course I’d never make my horse go through though.

Well,I have been riding English style for almost 40 years. Although I started with jumping, of course amateur lebel, in the last years I only enjoyed long rides in the country with.my beloved horse. I believe both horse and rider must have good time and relax and no rider should risk a horse just for his own interest
I think Badminton Horse Trials' course designers make some very attractive fences, but sometimes, they just don't seem that safe. I know they've since introduced frangible pins on these fences, and rightly so, but they're oftentimes still ostentaciously wide or large. Do they really need to be that big and daunting? Must be scary when coming off over one of these fences.
These courses are getting plain dangerous. I think this is bordering cruelty to the animal. No better than horse racing

It is amazing how powerful these animals are but really hitting them over these difficult jumps is just a bit over the top. Horses have some hard vision in which they estimate the distances and it’s so amazing how most of these horses clear such huge heights and distances
British eventing, in particular, has taken to handing out penalties for improper use of whips!
Good comment re horses' vision. Recently a book was published noting in it a study regarding how a horse's vision works. Turns out they have pretty poor vision, e.g. show jumpers which consistently want to position their heads high coming up to a jump. It also explains (sorta) about their tendencies to spook at dangerous objects like a wayward leaf or a menacing pebble.

When I was doing cross country, the jumps were fully solid. No giveaway . This is a really great idea because I had a bad accident because of it and am still paying

Manny jumps are way to hard to “see” for the horses so they don’t know how high and wide they have to jump and most of the riders are riding very poor, especially how they are sitting on their horses and how they support their horses (more not support them, or even make it harder for the horse)

why do they make cross country courses so challenging when the riders clearly are used to smaller jumps, therefore accidently put the horse off balance before the jump. there were so many instances where the striding was so completely off that there was no possible way the horses could have jumped the jump well. of course i am not meaning that the riders aren't good ones, i'm sure they probably are , but this level is just way too challenging for them and their horses.
The course designers at these big competitions are forgetting they are horses not machines.

The white corner was very high and not a tight enough turn for the horses to be able to judge. Personally I think they should have Made it slightly lower or atleast a more sever angle so they can see it better

Neither pretty nor entertaining to watch. Did the course designer not get some of the fences right or would some of the rider/horse combinations been better off in a 4 Star competition?
I think it was a mix of both, mainly first time 5* eventer combinations that fell off. Maybe some rider misalignment as well but some of the fences were big, I was there in person but nothing too exceptionally challenging.

I love eventing but the courses for this event were clearly never designed with the horse and rider’s safety in mind. It doesn’t matter how plastic or “safe” you make your jumps, riders and horses still get hurt because of irresponsible course makers.

i’ve been riding for half my life & while cross country can be fun & exciting (i’ve done it myself), i think it’s just too risky & harsh for both the horses & the riders, it looks like they barely have any control
