  • At 17 years old Maja Kuczyńska was the first junior world champion in indoor skydiving. As a seasoned sky dancing pro, Maja felt more comfortable dancing through air than most long-time skydivers. But Maja was one of the only sky dancers to jump into the wind tunnel without ever actually skydiving. All that changed when Maja decided it was time to jump out of a plane for real and skydive outside the wind tunnel for the first time.

For anyone who has not been in a wind tunnel or tried skydiving: Everything is much harder than it looks in the tunnel. Try to hold your fingers steady out the window of a car driving at 70 mph. Now imagine your whole body in wind going more than twice that speed. Watch some footage of beginners learning the four body positions to get a sense of what it is like for mortals. So impressive and inspiring!

Difficult for the Instructor to think of something to teach her? And he's got 19.000+ jumps? What about teaching her to track away for group separation, I'm sure she hasn't done that in tunnel. What about levels and long distances to catch up with the group/base in a formation of any discipline? There's plenty she can learn and she'd learn quickly for sure.
And yeah, that looked like a wacky opening, being one of the most expensive DZ in Europe I wouldn't be happy with that.
Very good on Maja for not letting the hard opening be a turnoff foe the course.

What if you could safely skydive without a parachute backpack? Like a giant net suspended 100 ft in the air or something? With her aerial control she could totally land in a net the size of a football field if such a thing could work.

She had a "hard opening". Basically when the parachute opened the slider (a piece of material designed to prevent the parachute opening too fast) came down very quickly. As a result rather than the deceleration being spread over 4 to 6 seconds the deceleration happened in about 1 to 2 seconds. Going from 110mph to about 20mph that quickly gave her some whiplash. Its quite rare for the this type of thing to happen hence why the instructor said she was unlucky.

I know that the video and the commentary already has a grey beard but I also wondered about it especially as I know the Polish reality. I saw some interviews with Maja and the subject became clear. Well, she actually got a great privilege, but not because her parents were crapping money, but because at a very young age she tried flying in the Flyspot tunnel where it turned out she was doing great and because the sport didn't actually exist in Poland yet, the owners decided to promote it by sponsoring promising jumpers.
…What I think is worth mentioning is that she used to get there by train and the ride from Wrocław, where she lived, to Warsaw, where the tunnel was took at best 5 hours in those days 😅
