These guitars are surprisingly good for acoustic-type fingerpicking and strummy-strum stuff. Mine has a very glassy, crystalline clean tone, which is so weird considering it’s made of the same stuff your kitchen counter is made of. It does remind me of a Tele a bit. Honestly, I think they have a funky unique look, and nothing else sounds like a Dano.

The real secret to these are the adjustable height of the pickups. Simple to manage with the bolts on the back holding the pickups in place. Whatever you settle on, the output volume must match. So long as the pots are behaving the same, the timbre of the output is just glassy smooth.

I have a re-issue DC-59 12 string. I notice that the tone/volume knobs are different on this example as mine is one for volume and one for tone across the pickups as chosen by the switch. The biggest thing I noticed, which was true with the original as well as mine, is that the wiring is such that the middle switch selection does not make the sound twice as loud. The original wiring was in series between the two pickups, which meant that if you chose to have both then you had twice as much output as either single pickup selection. It thus seems that there has been some redesign of the wiring. Oh, and I use my 12 string Danelectro as a Rickenbacker simulator - much like Peter Buck did (though far far more proficiently). It is a gorgeous sound - zangly more than jangly.

Almost bought one of these Dano's a few years back. I rather like their quirkiness. I'll probably end up getting one, although I've been kind of stubbornly waiting for them to offer a lefty model with a zero fret.
Thanks again for the videos. Hope you are well, too :)

The weirdest part is the centre position on the switch puts the pickups in series not parallel. I liked it so much I put a series switch (takes some doing) on my Telecaster. That bridge is a massive improvement.

    I like this guitar!
I think it's got great clarity, you get a nice mixture of highs, mids and lows without any one if these being too dominate.
    Plus it looks great!!
If it's good enough for Jimmy Page, it's good enough for me.
You're playing shows just how good it must feel, nice and smooth, effortless.
But then again, you make every guitar play effortlessly!!! 😉
Great video as always, John, thanks so much!
Think I'll head out to Guitar Center and try one out .....😀

Ever get one of those quistical "I dunno" moments....
It certainly sounds good, so therefore destroying any of the arguments I typically have with the voices in my head.
It's just so milkshake American 50's looking, about as attractive as a formica dining-room suite, I suppose therein lies its unique kitch appeal. [coff, coff]
But then, if I had a spare £300, it would be a stunning instrument to whip out at a 'Cradle of Filth' tribute jam session. Which of course I would find to be a most amusing stunt to pull. And it does sound good.

I’ve played a 59dc3 deluxe almost 50 years. It was under my grandparents bed since before I was born. Just always liked it and despite playing other guitars that were a lot more expensive and attractive that I liked, it’s favorite in my collection.
So… I recently bought a 90s 59dc2 nos much like the one in the demo. Wonderful condition and ridiculously inexpensive. Im fiddling with a similar bridge and not thrilled with it as the tilt is a bit much. Doesn’t seem the inserts in the wood, but just sloppy slot. I’ll try a couple washers, but really would like to upgrade to a better one eventually. Suggestions for that are welcome.
My intentions were for the neck and pickups for a custom built body, but it looks nice as is and just intend to play it for a while first.

Nice review! I’m sure that the Dano will sell after your very comprehensive demo. Like your student I probably have far too many guitars but you can never really have too many. A few years ago I found a single cutaway Danelectro two pickup guitar at a car boot sale for £25, a bit of a bargain considering that it was still in its original cardboard box. As far as I can tell mine was built in the late 1990s as it has a slightly different shaped coke bottle headstock to the later guitars and a simpler bridge/tailpiece consisting of a strip of rosewood on a metal bass. Otherwise it’s pretty similar to your students with the aluminium nut, stacked pots and Kluson style machine heads. These cheaply constructed guitars sound amazing and make you wonder when it comes to the great tone wood debate.

I notice the volume control on the 64XT is a little forward of the bridge, I have an Epiphone V like that and I find it a problem being so far forward for strumming, do you notice that?
