    350 Yamy 780lbs x2 = 1560
    300 Merc 635lbs x2 = 1270
    300 Yamy 571lbs x2 = 1142
Almost 300lbs difference. I own both a Yamy and a Merc, both great motors it's a preference.
But if you head down to Venice LA or any major fishing city you will find out 90% of the outboards are Yamys.
Hauling fish\crab\shrimp\oysters, why do you think most hard working ppl shell out their own money purchase Yamaha?
Contractors\government\independent companies that buy motors for all types of boats choose Yamaha as well for work?
I do ask a lot of these workers why Yamaha, "they break down far less than Mercury especially on heavy loads".
I think Mercury makes great motors but if I owned a company that relies on my motor to work hard, I would not sign a check to Mercury.
My 2 cents, it's my opinion, no reason to get upset.

Hahaha welcome to 2022 mate, 8yr and you look a right tool. They don't even sell mercs in the UK now that they've became so unreliable. The only thing we are sad about is Jonnyrude stopping making outboards for the time being as they can at least make a reliable motor that lasts more than one winter here.. unlike Merc. Dont even bother defending Merc now they are known as Fisher Price outboards here.

yes my friend what you have said is some what true.people do not understand that with out bords your pat for what you get.with the merc they use the super charger to get to the 350ph.but Yamaha use 2 exta pistons.this means that it comes at more of a price tag than the merc. what Yamaha like to do is make engins that are not under alot of stress i.e not having a v6 inline super charged.
for all the merc fans this is another fact that you can shove up there!

I completely believe it. Merc has taken back the lead in outboard technology. The Verado is the most technoligically advanced outboard motor out there - by far.
While I'm sure the Verado beat it in a drag race, I'm not sure which would have a higher top end. You'd think the Yamahas would eventually catch up, but who knows with (literally) a ton of outboards hanging on the back.

Yamahas being a more fuel efficient long lasting outboard, while mercury is more of a light weight go fast engine. thats why its a v6 with a turbocharger (i think the new 350 sci even has two)

No, Verado's are four strokes. I said put these two boats up against an identical boat with two strokes and the two strokes will walk right off from those.
That gear clunk is due to rigging. The linkage needs adjusted. Yamaha doesn't have the gear lash like Mercury does. It's more direct. I know, I've owned both.

Would really like to know how they are propped and watch a drag race like that right up to the top end. All this talk of peak horsepower is fine but I'd love to see a dyno curve of some of these modern outboards and see whose making what torque where. That verado supercharger could run some serious boost then bypass on the top end, not sure merc does this though. The naturally aspirated engines are limited by the cams they run. Would be good for these mfgs to publish some sae standard dyno runs.

The verado's supercharger means torque early on in the rev range more than matches the big yam v8 when you take the weight into consideration. But I wouldn't all get excited and pro American or slate the yams. Yams are excellent quality powerheads and mercurys heads are generally Japanese sourced anyway. Yes the mercury seems like a good choice for 200 hrs worth of hard fun filled work but beyond that I think the less stressed a yamaha will out live it.

I'm not a big fan of Yamaha brand anchors either :) "Ignorance is bliss in your case", Ive owned 3 mercury products. They were expensive, broke down fairly quickly and cost a fortune to have worked on. The only mercury product Ive had any luck with was a mercruiser alpha one drive, the mercruiser engine on the other hand was a piece of crap that quickly broke down right out of the shop....multiple times. Who knows maybe I've just had bad luck with their products, the newest ones might be better.

  • @robiandolo
    @robiandolo Před 2 lety

So this is why Yamaha discontinued the F-350. I’ve been saying they need to take the XTO platform and do a 350 and then a 500 to compete with Mercurys V-12 500 & 600 Verado’s!
The fact that Mercury has lower gear case steering is a huge advantage over Yamaha. The other thing is Yamaha in the higher HP range causes underpowered boats. Look at Pursuit Boats, look at the top end. They can barely reach 60mph although they manage to get a roughly 30mph cruise. I think they could get better top end and cruise with a 350 Yamaha rather than a 300 or even triple 300s. I mean you could save a ton of money buying 2 engines vs 3.

Every type of engine will have its fair share of problems. i drive a 17' launch with a 2001 yamaha 25 on the back of it. it gets slammed into reverse and pinned every dock landing. it gets driven at full throttle rather often. this boat is running at least 8 hours a day, 7 days a week for three months a summer since it was new in 2001. we havent had a single problem with the motor. we have had two mercury's and one only lasted two summers and other lasted 3. now we have all yamahas.

Yamaha is a 327cid V8 quad cam 32 valve from Japan (60°funny that, this revolution was in the 1955 Chevy V8), Verado is a 161 cid supercharged/Intercooled straight 6. Both of these are expensive to service/repair. Guess i'll stick with my 1993 186 cid looper 225 OMC. Been running for years and still will. I will not see a gas mileage difference of AU$20K by going to an Evinrude ETEC. forget 4 stroke outboards in small craft to 40 ft to heavy . Try 3 Packards in an ECTO 75 footer instead better.

horsepower does not necessarily mean top speed. top speed has everything to do with the amount of rotations the engine is capable of withstanding continuously while moving the craft a certain distance with every rotation... meaning prop pitch, rpms, and boat wieght = top speed... not horsepower.

That whining noise on the wheel is the power steering pump that hasnt been installed correctly. The noisy gear changes are because it hasn't got the proper prop spacers the merc will hole shot better because of the weight differace but the v8s are doing it easy while the mercurys are driven hard all the time using alot more fuel. Verados are troublesome expecially the gearboxes. Verado do a beefier gearbox that also doubles fuel consuption. The person who made this video is a silly yank who don't belive another country can make a better thing. Arrogant yanks!

Go to any SKA or Redfish Cup tounament walk by and look at the support tents Mercury guys are busy all night long repairing their garbage...powerheads, lowerunits, or whatever else breaks....the Suzuki and Yamaha guys are back at the hotel long asleep Etecs are very bad about blowing up right out of the box the run it wide open out of the box is false watched a guy who bought a e-boom blow smooth up at 4hrs and the lowerunit went boom at 26hrs seen other e-booms go bye-bye with less than 50hrs

its funny how things work. the american muscle racing car was all about big engines and relaible power. the japanese racing cars were all about the same power in a tiny engine. why the opposite in outboards? Why because at sea you want relaible engines that last long... yamaha is doing the right thing as usual.

Ignorance is bliss in your case....I'm not wild about the Verado either. Outboard engines with valve trains, cams, tappets, valves, timing belts, etc...are far more likely to fail than modern 2 stroke designs. I've owned numerous outboards during my lifetime and the current high tech 2 strokes Mercury Optimax, Tohatsu and Etecs are all simple reliable engines. The big Yamaha is a 900 pound boat anchor.

Reliable is yamaha. Mercury just for short run and shorter life.
Horses are the same. How the props does the rest is the PERFORMANCE.
Nothing else. Just stay with yamaha. They rules marine.
