Grey shirts & Southampton 6-3 Manchester United 1996-97

- In their previous league game, United had been on the end of a 5-0 thumping by Newcastle. "Just a blip," said Alex Ferguson. A week later, the blip got much worse. And it still wasn't over then. United also lost the game against Fenerbahce in Europe and their next league fixture to Chelsea.
They had previous at the Dell too -- United had lost there 3-1 the season before and it was their grey kit that infamously got all the blame. There's a bit about that at the start of this video. Ian Darke narrates, Steve Banyard commentates. - Sport
One of our best results ever in the Premier League!! Imagine Peter Schmeichel conceding six at the Dell! Beautiful days.
As a Southampton fan I can never forget these games. They were both in 1996. Beating Man Utd 6-3 was amazing. We battered them in this game. But the strange thing is that despite this result we didn’t win a game for another 2 months and only just avoided relegation and United went on to be champions. Only a blip for United after all. Just goes to show you never know in football.
Sounds like 2015 when we beat Arsenal 4-0 right in the middle of 2 months of dreadful form
This is the beautiful game! Some great football played by Southhampton here, truly earned win!
Liverpool suck even know they beat Manchester United
ta mush!
Beckham's reaction to Keane getting sent off was priceless
He should have been booked the ref was running backwards to get away...
Berkovic was in beast mode!
Berkovic's 2nd goal's celebration was cracking XDDDD
Le Tissier, the man of the incredible goals! The 4-2 for Southamption is another incredible goal!
Not just incredible goals. He could do amazingly accurate crosses and long range passes. Plus, beat an opponent almost effortlessly. Not too shabby with his head either. Poor tackler, that was all. And no pace when he was older, But he didn't need any.
The fact that he casually lobbed basically the best keeper in the premiership...maybe even on the planet then just showed that and I actually asked Le Tiss himself if he did it because he saw Newcastle lobbing him the week before and he answered....yup...made my day.
As a Saints fan this is probably one of my favourite premier league games of all time.
That second goal is what dreams are made of! Top 20 best EPL goals?
And 4th Southampton goal!
Yes what great memories this this match was delighted to be among the Saint supporter that day... what a shame we couldn't keep the Israeli what a player..his temperament stoped him from becoming a legend of the premier league
This game alone gives him legendary status.
PL was much more fun in the late 90s then it is today
Yes, even if the level of football has probably improved, the PL just seems so sterile these days. Too much money at stake for players to get up to nonsense.
I loved every second of this game
What a great day out this was. Proper football, proper ground and a decent result. Can I go back to the Dell please??
ive never been wish it was still here so i can get the atmosphere from the dell
I remember it well...the arrogance of Man Utd in not just swapping a kit in the middle of a game but completely discarding it thereafter. What about all the people that had paid for one, where does that leave them? Terrible sportsmanship and treatment of the fans. Recently they wore a 1958 retro kit vs Man City in honour of the Munich air crash. They lost that game and sulked thinking they had some divine right to win it because it was their show.
I remember it well too and yes Man Utd are the sorest of losers when things don’t go their way. I did enjoy the Man City game almost as much as the Saints beating them twice in a row.
Berkovic was some player. Played two great years for us, booted Hartson in the face and off up North he went.
Hartson booted him
@@shlomoh.6148 Right you are.
The arrogance of Man Utd, ruthlessly ditching a shirt their fans had paid hard earned money for just because they were losing.
Was that the last match Man Utd ever played in that grey kit?.
Or maybe because gray kits are hard to play in
Nice one Matt Le Tissier, the goal and the comment 😂😁😀🤣😂😁
Ostenstad "The Striking Viking" got to love the Saints..! never a dull moment supporting them. Shipped 5 goals the game before and then beat Man U 6-3 ahahahaha!!! and then we got relegated....now 4th !!!! talk about roller coaster
Haha and United blamed the grey shirts. I remember it so clearly.
Grey shirts, first 45mins, lost 3-0. Change shirts, second 45mins, won 1-0.
The change of shirts worked then?
That's the sort of thing Fergie used come out with!!
well, they won the League, so...
I find it hard to understand why that Saints team grabbed a point one week later at Everton only to struggle for the rest
berkovic the king!!
Every single time Southampton kicked the ball towards the goal, it went in.
Beautiful days indeed! 🔴⚪️🔴⚪️😇
I like that Berkovic lad, great technical player. And a United supporer, I've read.
That Scholes goal never should have stood. Foot was dangerously high.
Saints had two goals disallowed in that game too, so we stuffed 8 past PS! :-)
Okay! Am I the only one to notice that all 3 Utd goals were from set -pieces. :/
I will never forget that day.
I was there !! Happy del days
berko with one of the best goals ever!
"what a total genius"
For two seasons Southampton played like Barcelona against United.
I was at the 3-1, didn't go the following year, wish I had.
But in the modern era of Premier League/Sky coverage is there any match camera work worse than that of the 6-3 win. It's bloody criminal.
As an Israeli I'm glad to hear so, but he's retired 6 years ago at the age of 34.
He was a good player, a member of the Israeli football Hall of Fame, he was chosen as the number 10 best middlefielder in the history of the English premier league by The Times newspaper, and even got nicknamed "Ha-Kosem" (the magician in Hebrew) but he's more of a talky talky than a great footballer :)
Today he's a commentator in the Israeli sports TV channel and a manages in the youth team of F.C. Nesher.
After we hosed them 5-0 at St James it was a great performance by Southampton to give them another hiding. 👏👏👏
Ostenstad is my uncle!🤩
he's my daddy
They glorify this match but not the win against Liverpool at anfield The following season. Having not won there for so long... Since like 1981. And the way they did it they scored 3 goals...
With David May in defence, there is no hope
Anyone remembers who was fouled for Beckham's first goal?
25 years later and we destroy them 9-0. 🤣🤣🤣
that Berkovich goal in 3:33!
damn i wish Israel would have more players like him!.
and that freesyle dance haha.
There was no way that shot was being saved haha. It was like the ball had been kicked by a horse.
Haha 11 goals against in 2 games tough week for United.
Epicoooo, vamo el manya papá Uruguay nomaaaaaa!!!
i watched the whole game of saints beating united 3-1 on dvd. the saints 5 man midfield really knew their high pressing football.
1976 was even better. only a 1-0 win to saints against man. u but it was the FA cup final.
GET IN THERE!!! COYR!!!
And this was after losing 5-0 to Newcastle. United was still able to win the league after they're bad forms.
I didn't buy the grey shirt excuse then and I don't now. most of the people in the stadium were wearing southamptons red and white striped shirt, surely the saints players would have found it harder to spot each other than uniteds players did
kflem80 not really u fuck wit coz the fan's were not were all not wearing back shorts duh
This just proves that you don't need the money Man City have spent to put 6 goals past United! Come on You SAINTS!!!
Can anyone see the United players?
Even they did, they still can't period.
They could easily blame on Keane for this lost 😅
How could this be a slap to Man U fans? We still have all those league titles... and a hell of a lot more wins. This game just goes to show even a shitty team like Southampton can get lucky.
It does mean that United still search manfully for goals despite having ten men.
OK - we watched the space ..... what happens now? ;-)
The US Army based their grey digital camo on them shirts
Another excuses by Fergie
wow Berkovich !!!
And Fergies still coming up with lame excuses when United dont perform!!!!
Dont forget Man City put 6 past them at OT a long long long time before they became rich too
Number 30 are oncel to my freind
Why replay Man Utds goals but not Southamptons?
They didn’t have time because there were so many lol

well its utd have scored 13 goals in the last two leauge games thi season...chelsea on sunday woot
United have been beaten twice at Old Trafford by 1-6 both times by Their neighbours who actually are from Manchester .CITY
So you're taking cheat to be allowed in the game? Doesn't that makes your team win by cheating in this case then?
Would could have scored at least 10 against united that day.
😁
Is that you Eyal?
to be that they are relegated
Hadn't the Geordies just battered utd 5-0 the game before??!!
That’s correct and also I think it was the the week before the Newcastle game they lost 5-0 to Chelsea!! Hahahahaha
of the season. Typical Saints!
+GingerRum
Football is a mad game. haha
Don't Blame The Grey Shirt For Losing The Game Utd Us Lost The Game Because Us Didn't Turn Up & Play & I'm Talking About The 3-1 At The Dell Not The 6-3 Game. Everyone Blames The Grey Shirts Well I Blame The Team For Not Turning Up If Us Had Turned Up & Played Us Would Have Win At Game.
Why capital letters all the way?
The real man utd here
Just typical United , always blaming somethink when they lose .
This is the beuty of southampton. We hate united and every time we play them go and have go
Watching this in 2017 and it's funny. Like if you agree.
@TheRNP93 Do you understand jealousy? I would have to envy something about you or Southampton to be jealous. Sorry but I'm not sorry, I don't envy you guys at all. Good try though :)
HAHAAAAAAA
@jimmymillerdood lol jealous much?
Saf..u're quite funny
HAHAHAHA! stamps in the face to all man u fans
once again le god steels the show
Lol @ the last comment typical glory hunter can't take a 6-3 thrashing by back then a bottom half of the table Southampton!
Possibly the worst use of the English language i've ever seen!!
ScumUnited OUT !
