  • You've got to be a little cheesed off when you score a hat-trick, but still end up on the losing side. Not only did that fate befall Dwight Yorke in this game, but he also hit the post and had another wrongly disallowed for offside. The remarkable thing is that he was still looking for his first goal of the season going into this fixture. Some real entertainment here, described by Peter Brackley.

Yorke was a great finisher. It's mad looking back how stacked Newcastle's team was, in terms of star quality.

Yup, in fact Shearer was actually an even better finisher, in fact the best pure striker in terms of his ability to score from any situation, if he had joined Man Utd, he would have bag quite a lot more goals and silverware.

Headers were so vital and precise back then. Because the ball was harder and when stuck, the header can arrow into a corner with speed and accuracy.

Yorke's 3rd goal should have been called offside. The "4th" was wrongly disallowed, so in a way the two cancel each other out. NIce football by both sides though.

Not a big fan at all of Wolstenholme or Johns, I must admit Brackley is the modern day commentator who resembles more those two old standing stones, and... in fact... I do prefer people like Barry Davies or John Motson. :-)
