So glad you had awesome weather on Mooslikauke!! I think we both missed out on that last year..... Another awesome video! SEE YOU SOON!!
It was a different mountain this time around!
Thanks for the shout out brother!! Looking forward to meeting up hopefully!
This will be so good...hope you both video the meeting
Go Evan!
Keep on trucking!
Going strong 💪 Five days ! Yoo-hoo! Looking great Evan ! 😀
Thanks for the video, Evan! Shortening your stride and watching that HR is my method for running hills too! Love that “lower gear” I get when I shorten up. It has been a couple months once my last backpacking trip, and your new videos are motivating me to make some time to get out there for a night or two. Thanks again!
Seems you are redoing one of the most scariest sections. Imagine the second time you are able to enjoy it more. You own it!
Thanks! To be truthful, I was nervous about doing the Whites. Or attempting them. Still am! I’ll probably say why in a video.
Yes, Liz's video was a great, good, fun contrast! Well worth a look-see!
And Evan, still enjoying and learning from your commentary and experiences.
So cool to be up to date with you Evan :) Thanks for bringing me along
Fun, of course it's fun, fun is a state of mind.
Channel where your mind was at this point
on the thru hike last summer and it wasn't
fun. You're on vacation now, they're fun.
When I was young I loved Hawaii so much
on vacation, I moved there. I lasted 6 months
and no part of it was fun. That's about as
long as a thru hike and every bit of it was
an ordeal. What happened to you on the AT
when you said it was nothing like you thought
it would be, happened to me in Hawaii. I
learned a huge lesson from that, never pre-judge
an experience because it's never what you think
it's going to be if you've never done it before.
Thanks, good points. Fun is a state of mind-but your body has to be in a good way too!
Hey Evan, what a different perspective going sobo. Great video. I’m going to be watching you like a hawk ready to pounce upon a bunny. It’s so nice to see you back on the trail. You must know your subscribers have been looking forward to this so much. Be careful you don’t slip out of those sandals on the way down the mountain. You’re the man.
Thanks. Still going NOBO though like last year. NH north to Maine.
Evan's Backpacking Videos Great, looking forward to it.
Evan, thanks for another good video. I commented (unfortunately lengthily) on one yesterday. I understand why some people question your re-hiking trails, but I'm with you. 20-plus years ago, when we lived in New Hampshire, I mostly did day-trips (two young children, two jobs), and I did Mousilauke at least three times; in early November, hiking it was like hiking to the moon; rarely encountered anyone other than my own party. Believe it or not, I hiked Lafayette several times when there was nobody else at the summit (I ordinarily did the loop up Falling Waters, then across Haystack and Lincoln to Lafayette, returning on the Old Bridal Path), but also came up once from the north on the Eagle Cliff Trail (steep!), and a couple times went up-and-back on the Old Bridal Path. Some trails are worth hiking multiple times, especially 25 years ago, when there was so much solitude. Be safe, and enjoy hiking the way you like to hike.
Thanks for another video. Really missed you and Liz this year on CZcams.
Quicksand has some really great videos ..I enjoy following him like I enjoy following you.
I love your camp set up
Keep it up and stay safe. Keep us updated on your gears and set up and your insights . Thanks
Thanks for sharing...great perspective on the whites, definitely a good video for my future hikes up in NH!
Hi Evan. Yeah, I watch liz's channel too, so I was already aware of the stuff she did. I'm watching this video Saturday night, so you must have gotten it uploaded in time. Glad you're having fun. I know I have fun just watching you. Take care.
Yes, got it uploaded. And realized I showed my room number in the video, so then worried someone was going to come banging on my door last night. No one did, lol.
You worked hard going up the steps with your trademark sandals. Good job!
Great to see you guys on the trail again. I watched your AT thru hike videos religiously, and it was amazing to meet you at Hiker Days. I was just in the Whites a couple of weeks ago for my first time. What an amazing place. That hike up Mousilauke (from the south) is something.
Thanks for this series of videos.
Great to see you on here again!!
Nice video Evan glad to see you back. I have been following Quicksand on the trail and I would like to see yall meet up as well. Hike on brother.
Great video, glad to see you out on the trail again. Enjoy the whites. Shout out to Liz.
Great video! Looks like a great hike.
Another great video
Awesome beautiful hiking, vlogging, and scenery, all the best.
Quicksand is in Andover! 👊🏻 I don't like those stairs. I actually prefer the rock slabs. I don't mind if they put ladders, but those stairs are really slippery when wet, not that the rock slabs are not, but there is a technique you can use to get off the rock slabs when wet. That does require you to do some sitting and scooting when descending or bending and using your hands when ascending, but I think it is a better option to those stairs, in my personal opinion. That might be a single seat glider made of fiberglass. I heard a lady exclaim that no one was in there, but they make gliders for one person. I would start with a resting heart rate around 55bpm and try not to over exert myself. My optimal is 105bpm. I average 120bpm. That is smart you stop to monitor. Everyone should do that. I have mentioned before that not everyone can make the trek...and I meant that when talking about Mt. Washington. This one hiker almost passed out three summers ago and his heart rate was probably almost to his max. Happy trails! 🌺
Lots of info, thanks.
@@EvansBackpackingVideos HeeHee! 😂 Thanks. I compile notes on everyone's vids I watch, so I can go back for research. 👍🏻
Thanks!!!
Glad you’re back making hiking vids again! I remember during hour AT thru hike you said you were done making vids forever. Any chance you could talk on one of your vids about why you decided to pick it back up? Thx!
When I did my NOBO thru in 2009 I stayed at several huts on a work for stay basis. My impression was that every hut croo back then sorta looked down upon the SOBO’s not the NOBO’s. It was almost like they felt like the SOBO’s hadn’t paid their dues yet or at least that was the overall consensus of my hiking group. Did you ever get that vibe?
I’ve never stayed in a hut, so-not sure.
Looks like you're a week ahead of me - we hit the whites next week, can't wait! Super nice weather and views on this one and according to the weather reports, a cold front is about to bring some epic cool weather and views for you. MAF - very interesting! I need to look at that. We're hoping to cross paths with Quicksand also - been watching him progress South and the timing is pretty close.
fun watching! Both you and Liz! No soup at the hut? Waiting patiently for the next one!
Great video, Evan! Hope you're enjoying the Pa'lante pack. Bet you have some Thru hike memories when re-hiking these sections! Take care -
Yes, many! And I love the pack ...
3:58. I recommend the Garmin Instinct watch for beats per minute and other information.
Great video congrats 👍😎
Always enjoy your explanation of what you are doing and why. Is the midday break working out for you? Looks like you are having good weather. Hike on!
Yes, working out!
Glad to see you back with videos. What I would ask is what do you appreciate or notice more this time around compared to your thru hike last year? Great to see you and Liz kidder together again as well, don’t see the continued “traimaly” sp after the thru hike as much in videos.
Wow. No delay. I saw Liz’s video. She got some stuff you didn’t record. I was wondering if you were going to pass quicksand.
Great video! You've talked a bit about the through hike mentality. Do you think there is less intensity for a section? Do you find yourself able to enjoy it more or do you slip into the, 'got to make miles' mentality? Also, what training do you do when not hiking?
Mostly I run. I’m still slipping into the “must make miles” mentality and fighting it.
Interesting that you don't use hiking poles. I love them and they help the knees and thighs on the way down. Mt Moose is my favorite White. You are in my backyard neighbor! Happy Hiking!! And I know you did the whole App Trail in sandals, didn't you?? And here you are in sandals again! Evan you are a Wild Man!!
That's not a plane . It's a fixed wing glider from Franconia. Take a flight sometime. It's worth it. Love the videos. Nice job. Keep on hiking in the free world.
It’s a bird, it’s a plane! It’s a glider, as I pointed out in text in the video!
It’s a bird, it’s a plane! It’s a glider, as I pointed out in text in the video!
I missed you by one day! 😊
Liz’s video clued me in that you are back on. Great. Your videos are very informative for a wannabe - a couple years out most likely.
I must ask, at 5:49, 5:51 two great waterfall in the woods shots, would you give permission to a quilt artist to do a wall hanging in fabric of one of these? They take a long time to do, but if it works it could be quilt show worthy - permission is a must though. I plan to try your sandals soon. They look like they would save my toenails better than even the longer, wider toe box shoes. I enjoy and learn from all your videos.
Yes to permission, send me an email. My email address is in the video description.
Another great vid. Keep'em coming.
Do you ever snag roots/rocks with the tips of your sandals?
Thanks Sam, I’ll try to answer that in a video.
Thanks again for another great post. You were pointing out other peaks on top of Mt Moosilauke. How do you know what peaks they are? Are you using an app to identify them?
I was using Google Earth plus some locals on the mountain. I just got the PeakFinder app though. That’s what I’ll use now. For Google Earth, you have to have phone service. And it uses lots of battery.
You need to do the Dacks next!
So great to see another vlog from you! Glad you are enjoying the trip. Are you redoing this section because you were sick the first time around?
I wasn’t sick for this part. But I think it was my favorite part of the trail along with Maine.
Great video and I would like more detail on your diet
Same as when I was on the AT. I think you watched those. I might do a long video on it but I’m not excited about having to put up with a lot of nonsense in the comments. There’s a ketogenic backpacking group on Facebook.
Pretty sure that glider flies out of sugar hill NH near Franconia. Big glider club there and have flown with them. My question is why do the at section again already complete and not something new like their ADKs ( my personal fav) or wherever
The N.H. and Maine sections were my favorites but I was worn down and couldn’t enjoy them fully last year.
makes sense. good luck!
So happy to see new videos from you! I loved your vlog last year! Your bug bivy, does it have a floor? And it seems it’s quite possible to stop every couple days for food to minimize a heavy food carry. Is that correct? I’ve hiked some in the Whites. More on the northern side.
Yes that’s correct. And yes to the floor.
Hi Evan, thanks for sharing another great hike. I admire your sleep system but wonder how you deal with bugs. As a kid in scouts I used pine needles for comfortable bedding but got lots of chigger bites. Do you rake up leaves or try to find a soft natural spot where they lay? Is your gear sprayed down? Last year you slept next to logs sometimes, which would all be loaded with fire ants where I'm from in Florida. Are there fewer ants at the altitude you're at? Thanks and have a great trip.
No fire ants. I use a bivy to prevent problems with bugs.
I started my training hikes this morning so that I do not look like a total nubbie come October for our hike. I have got to get my butt up to the northern area of the trail. What have the temps. been like ???
Hot in the day, upper 50s at night.
Gotta laugh at the "This is a carry in, carry out site" at the hut. Not for THEM is isn't.
@Evan, you said that your knees were shot after finishing the AT, but it seems you’re still in pretty good shape. What did you do post-AT to keep your fitness up?
I walked for fitness and then ran as soon as I could, starting after about 3 weeks.
Hi Evans. I noticed that you don't use hiking boots, but sandals. How is the experience, because I use hiking boots on my hikes and my experience is that if it wasn't for the boots my toes will be gone. Hiking boots kills my toes on the descents and because of that i would love to use sandals when I hike, but im afraid of, due to my experience hitting rocks or roots while I hike. Any suggestions.
A video I made about sandals -- czcams.com/video/WcrR7wwJPpI/video.html
Question: What has been the best thing about repeating this section of trail? How have you seen it differently as a section hiker, as opposed to a thru hiker? Thanks again, man!
In sandles ? You look healthy, hows your feet ? Love Liz
Feet are good!
Baldface loop
at 6:35 in this video there on the far left I think I saw those people at trail Days, any idea who they are ?
No, no clue.
