  • Victor Kioulaphides composed De Grote Markt in 2005 as a souvenir from Groningen, a city in the north of The Netherlands. It was inspired by the view of the bustling outdoor market place of Groningen, on a rainy day during the weekend the composer visited The Netherlands. He had come to Groningen to be present at a concert given by the Dutch Mandolin Chamber Orchestra HET CONSORT to witness the premiere of his 'Concerto per Orchestra a Pizzico'.
For this video Alex Timmerman plays a 1930 Raffaele Calace Neapolitan mandolin with a 3.5 cm. long Napolitan plectrum.

A performance that perfectly captures both the character of the composition and the happiness of the memories from that wonderful trip :-)
