  • "The British government has left us out in the cold," says Terence Knott. He's the man behind EUBritizens, an action group of British people living in #Europe whose lives have changed dramatically due to #Brexit. They've lost their freedom of movement and their right to study, their professional qualifications no longer apply and some are even stuck at home unable to drive as their driving licenses are no longer valid. They're aiming long term to win back European citizenship, starting with a legal case to allow them the right to vote in Europe as they say they've been disenfranchised. Knott joined us for Perspective.

    I applied for residence when I arrived here 20 years ago. When my UK driving licence expired 10 years ago, I swapped it for a Spanish one. And the residence/id cards for non-EU citizens are now available to us, so I applied and received one last year.
    These people are simply fools for not having got their act together...

    • @AnexoRialto
      @AnexoRialto Před 3 lety +38

      Quite right. Since I was American and didn't have their privilege, I just applied and got my Spanish citizenship as soon as I legally could. This is just paperwork, but since they think somehow they're owed special treatment, they're not willing to simply jump through the hoops every other foreigner has to do when they immigrate to a country.

      @@AnexoRialto Indeed. Likewise, 2 years ago, I passed the nationality and language exams, so they were in my back pocket in case Brexit turned really nasty, so I could change my nationality a little quicker if it became necessary. Quite why people are not prepared after all these years of the UK fumbling around with Brexit is beyond me...

The UK is not being treated differently from any other 3rd country. Dear Scottish friends, even as I am just one EU citizen: you are welcome to the club at any time. Just leave, we can solve all problems. On the island one will be the divorce settlement, as you do not have a “prenuptial agreement” and we’re (forcefully) married in 1707, or?
      I am sure the EU governments will find a way to convince Spain (which some newspapers say could be the only Nation which is concerned regarding a Scottish EU membership - due to Catalonia).
      But as love and live always finds a way, the EU -we- will find one. Remember mate, in case of emergency (if somebody is concerned), schedule the meeting next to a Scottish distillery and you use your magic juice ;)
      Cheers and all the best from Germany.

      @ThePeperich, as 'just one EU citizen' you should know that it is not your place in invite new members into the EU.
      There welcome is an unknown and a question mark as to why they are not in formal talks with the EU about membership.
      They don't have to 'just leave' they could organise becoming an EU member now (before leaving the United Kingdom) but they do not explore that option.
      There would be no risks to talks to pave the way to a smoother transmission if a referendum was granted and leave was the outcome. But for some reason they remain resistant to the idea.
      Could it be that it is not as easy as you suggest.
