  • Today we will take a ride on the metro line that was built in the 19th century, more precisely it was built between 1894 and 1896 and opened to the public on May 2, 1896. Officially this is Budapest Millennium Underground Railway, Metro 1 or M1. It is known locally as "the small underground" ("a kisföldalatti"), while the M2, M3 and M4 are called "metró". It is the first underground on the European mainland, and the world's third oldest underground after the London Underground and Liverpool's Mersey Railway. Line 1 runs northeast from the city center on the Pest side under Andrássy út to the Városliget, or City Park. Like Line 3, it does not serve Buda. It's daily ridership is estimated at 80,000. Fun fact: at 7:21 the announcer tells the passengers to stay on the train until it returns to the platform as it entered the service area. It does so too early for some reason, as this announcement should be heard only by daredevils who stay on board at the last station.

Why in the back of the train instead of the middle or the front?!

Just a little bit of pointing out the official max speed for the line is 50km/h, unofficially ;) ? Whatever the train can handle. My friend is a driver on the line and if he is late, for some reason he usually floors it to 60 or above. I heard a legend that during test runs car no. 21 reached 80km/h.

Thank you my dear friend, I found the information that the operating speed is 60 kmh, maybe it has been lowered in the meantime and maybe it's time for track reconstruction...

@@RailwayNetworks Track is in good condition its the trains that cant handle it. Their chassis is old. If you remember the big curve after Széchenyi bath where the train goes really slow couple years ago that curve was max speed. Some dtivers still floor it there but it takes a hea vy toll on this little workhorses. When they were new? Oh boy... they were fast as hell.

@@jasonswaglord1498 Of course, it would be a shame to replace these trains with newer ones, it would lose the charm it has now. I hope that there is some plan in the coming period to restore the trains, so that the spirit of the old times will be preserved on this unique line in the coming period.

@@RailwayNetworks There is the heritage train, no.11 its an original train from 1896. About these little machines they were given a refurbishment and so they were given another 10 years of service!

IDK if you're Hungarian, but I'll just say that these trains come in every THREE MINUTES , and they can only go with max. 50 km/h! (at some places jut 25 km/h) So the drivers are always in rush!
