- Over 120 years old, the Budapest, Hungary Metro system is a great experience. There are 4 lines with a heavy Communist-era design, construction and even train cars. We will experience the super-long escalator that serve bomb-shelter subway station platforms. Riding 2 trains, the blue and the yellow lines, explore the metro system train stations and train lines. Enjoy
Trust me, the sound of the old Soviet (Metrowagonmash / MMZ) cars are one of the nicest sounds you can hear in your life :)
It is a sound I'll never forget.
They have a very specific sound of doors closing. They bang and do not stay closed straight away, it's like they jump open a tiny tiny millimetre jump open and close again (At least before modernisation they did, the shrill breaking sound is also very distinctive and of course the sounds and announcements. Kérem viggyazanak, az ajtók zárodnak lol. (also on the No. 1). No 3 trains also drive at highest speed into the stations and trains can rock on route. All part of the interesting experience. :-). general Public transport is really good in BP.
its the sound of the Moscow Metro. My favorite metro in the world (also the Tokyo Metro)
I love the sounds and also the "bum-bum" ringing and "kérem viggyazanok, az ajtók zárodnak!" on the No 3 metro as well as on the Földalatti. The sounds are unique and those two you recognise even blindfolded by the driving sound they make (and speed entering the station, for no. 3 when the breaks are applied and do this scratching soundclosing of the doors etc...)
@@Danny30011980 Kérem vigyázzanak az ajtók záródnak. I heard this voice until the new subways.
Budapest metro line 1 was the very first metro in mainline Europe and the second in the world (after London). New York took a lot of inspiration from it for the architecture of its stations on the IRT (the numbered lines).
Thanks for your comments. Very interesting information from you.
@@swissclimber1 You're welcome ;)
I loved Budapest, I was really surprised how clean it is. The metro is easy to use and I really loved. Super clean. The trash truck even washes the trash cans! Not to compare with the metro in Paris, saddly dirty and very bad smell, like urinal. I wish can return one day.
Because Paris has too many tourists, I refuse to visit it. Better to visit cities like Budapest that has interesting subway systems
I visited all over Paris, but no urine in December 2022. Those French are clean, organised, they wouldn't leave urine lying around. Metro in paris is cleaner than my bedroom.
Just back from Budapest...i enjoyed the metro so much. Public transportation are so well organized over there. Just had a little panic attack when i needed to use a DEEP escalator. The only thing that would brighten the image of Budapest is to teach busdrivers some kindness with tourists.... not all (tourists) are disrespectful! Please soften your tones
@azgalorr It’s not about generations but rather about people and personalities. It’s true that communism had some impact on mentality of people (I live in the post communist country myself and don’t like this type of mentality) but I really know nice people of all generations. I was in Budapest one week ago and met many nice people who spend the big amount of their lives before 1989. I thing this is rather a problem of not very pleasant personal. When people are tired of the work and don’t get enough money for it.
The acceleration is so extreme!
Russian/Eastern European technology - simple, brutal and effective.
@@swissclimber1 Sounds exciting, on my travel list. What else is Russian about budapest?
It must be loud. That is the best part of it. It scared the living soul out of me when I used to be a small kid. My parents kept me close as they weren't comfortable with it either, since we never wanted to get lost. We have used metro once a year to and fro in our travels to and fro to visit our grands so it was always were magical experience. I wasn't in Hungary for 20 yrs. My son never seen it but I shown this video to him and he said he wants to see it. If lockdown will end we are going to check it out together. I will feel alienated, because i know Hungary changed a lot but I was born there and I have desire to die there too. This video gave me tears while I was in wars, been imprisoned mid east never dropped one tear drop. Strange is it not?
Oh my gosh thank you for your comments. That almost brought a tear to me too reading your story. Sadly they are getting rid of the old-style Communist-era subway trains so hurry when you can travel to get there to see the subway trains. You can still ride Ikarus bus and the trams are from 1980's era. Have you seen my Keleti Train Station Video and my tram video?
I live in Budapest and I really like the old trains!
Haha! Me too!
And you have lots of old street cars, old stations, etc. But Budapest is changing. It won't always be old stuff!
I hope you got to experience lines 2 and 4. Line 2 has much newer cars than 3, which is very nice. However, the real jewel is line 4, which has self-driving trains where you can look out of the front. It also has brand new stations which are beautifully designed.
Szóval te fikázod a régi szovjet metrókat? :S
Most is teljesen jó használhatóm kivéve a Déli szakasz, ott tényleg életveszélyes a helyzet. A metrókat pedig sehova nem kéne újítani. Jók úgy, ahogy vannak.
Love it! Last time I have been there in 1983)
I miss these old trains!
We can go to Kiev Ukraine to ride the good old cars as an example
Many thanks for the video. I spent a few months working in Budapest some years ago and I could experience riding with the metro once again here. I want to go back there for a couple of days, but sadly can't find enough time.
Yes you are welcome. Sadly some of the old Soviet cars are gone due to "modernization". Sometimes change is bad. The architecture is awesome at some of the stations
Thanks for sharing this video with us. You did a very good job showing us how it's like to be there.
I'm watching it because I love being in Budapest and the rides in public transit (they're way more enjoyable than in Recife, Brazil, where I live). I miss the sound of the buses and trains stop announcements. I makes brings me a unique felling when I hear "a következő megálló...".
Cheers!
Great and thanks for comments. Sadly the Soviet cars are being retired :-( But the stations are classic. Does Recife have subway system?
@@swissclimber1 it's not really a subway, as it doesn't go underground. But we have surface eletric metropolitan trains.
@@swissclimber1 indeed, it's really a bit sad that those charming, functional cars are being retired. I'll miss them, despite their loudness. :)
The sound of the old Soviet cars is the most pleasant sound you can ever hear.
Rock a bye baby when the wind blows the cradle will rock. Here comes my lovely 1950’s Soviet Tram with the electric motor sound to rock me to 😴
Very entertaining video with all the little text to explain various cool things about the metro, sweet!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Nice. I live in Hungary I use metro 2 and 3 in most of the weekends, I live 30 mins away from the capital btw its beautiful you shoukd visit it
very cool!!
It's fun exploring Budapest by subway.
Very nice.
wow, it hasnt changed much since my last visit in Budapest 5 years ago
Yes sadly the blue old communist-era trains are going to be retired
One the No. 1 Metro the stations with the brown/white tiling and the wooden panelling are actually the old stations built in 1896 (So people could get from town (Gizella Tér - now Vörösmárty Tér to Városliget (City Park) an Heroe's square where the big exhibition was held). The station of Déak Tér was added later. I think this one as well as the other ones added later on the end of the line, Szechényi fürdő & Mexikói Utca are in the same cold and ugly style as Déak Tér. Number 1 is my favourite line. Ok, trains can be noisy with windows open in summer, but the stations are cosy and the trains are short, so is the ride, only 15 mins from one end to another. Number 3 line has it's own character aswell, but I find it a pity they are getting rid of the blue colour and paint the modernised Russian trains now in the same white and black colour scheme as no. 2 and no. 4 trains. Lots of character gone. The No. 3 stations are a bit old and would need some modernisation (currently in progress a far as I know), but have their own charme somehow, including the fast escalators. :-) Line 2 at least still has old stations on route, no. 4 - purely for transport, not really exciting, just modern transport, no history no stepping back in time feel.
Wow thanks for your passion. I loved the old Russian style cars and the 70's and 80's feel from Communist times of the stations. Your comments are great
Even though the No. 3 Metro cars were real old style, they had their charme. At the moment lots of the No. 3 stations are closed due to renovation, so there's lots of replacement buses (Metrópotló) in place - however the service even with replacement buses is thorough and proper (unlike here in Ireland where you cannot rely on any bus times in normal service, let alone if there's construction on the road...) Whenever I come home from a holiday in Budapest I find the escalators here soooooooo slooooooooow. lol. Oh and the wooden ones I think Batthyány Tér still has one of these. I find the general concept of travelling underground interesting. No streets, no traffic, going under streets, houses and even rivers. Submerge in an underground station and emerge somewhere completely different after a few minutes only....
7 June 2020, Palermo, Sicily, Italy.
It is admirable that the company running Budapest's metro has kept the old style ceiling lights seen at 1:19. They look way more attractive than the soulless, dull and cold 99% of what contemporary designers have come up with since the 1980s for public transport worldwide.
Thanks for comments. This was a few years ago when I took the video. They already are getting rid of the old Communist-era trains and I heard changing some of the stations. :-(
everytime i go down to the metro in Budapest i feel like those stairs are actually time machines to the soviet era (i mean i love the soviet technology not the ideology)
Yes indeed. Back to the Past, not the Future.
Great video :)
I was in Budapest back in 2000, and I don't recall the subway system being that "nice". I do remember those same Soviet cars, though. And inside the ones I rode in there was all kinds of graffiti.... you didn't even need to translate it to understand that it was messages of anger and hopelessness of the cold war era of the 1980s. You could just feel the tension in it
Wow times have changed. 17 years after you were there it was awesome! But sadly they are modernizing the old Soviet era system. I'll the miss the time warp of the old style stations and trains
1:25 there are two light types. This is one of them. 2:11 There's no metro, BUT buses go directly to the airport, lines 100E and 200E.
I'm paused at 1:03... Compared to the subway system in Bucharest, as I've often seen here on CZcams, the Budapest Metro stops appear to be indeed well-lit.
Is it just me or is that train REALLY fast?! It was like a Ferrari taking off
Haha, you're right! Look at it again, with the lights in the substation it's like you're taking off into the Twilight Zone. Yes it seems so fast compared to other subways. Good Soviet engineering
Loved the video and the subtitles. Interesting to see the metro through your eyes. And yes, the old metro stopping does sound like farting lol.
Yes, it's always interesting to see how outsiders see what your see everyday and take for granted.
Hi, what camera did you use? It is secured to your head or how did you make the video? Somehow it feels "hidden" as I didn't see people staring at you. Or they just didn't care? :)
GoPro-t vagy hasonlót használhatott.
You have never been to Moscow or St. Petersburg, i see. The trains there are the same but it's cleaner than these ones and less loud. The escalators are longer than these in 5 times, you can visit Admiralteyskaya st. in Petersburg or Park Pobedy in Moscow, it's really long in a huge depth. But i really like underground in Budapest, it's so exciting i guess
I hope to visit their one day! Do you live in Russia?
There are new trains in the Moscow metro. Within 5 years they must replace everything. I did not find the video in English, but there is no need. It is possible to have subtitles. czcams.com/video/xDMt262lm0M/video.html
czcams.com/video/ahouiqLO11I/video.html
swissclimber1 yes, i do
Thanks for this video but 1. You chose Line 3, which was the oldest and ugliest at the time -- and which has also been renovated like the other lines. 2. All the other lines are super modern and cool. 3. Line 4, the most recent, is one of the most gorgeously designed, and state-of-the-art subway lines in the world. Welcome to Budapest. 😊
Yes but I liked the old lines. It was super cool and I enjoyed the feeling of going back in time to the 1980's.
the old soviet style metro line (M3) and its trarins got renovated, some staions are still under construction but it is nearly done, the trains look and shape are the same but they are brand new on the M3 line
Great - so we still have the tradition of the old but with the condition of new. Did I get that right?
yeh, but it has a mix of black and white colors now
I was going to say... because when I was there in 2000, there was still cold War graffiti inside those subway cars that resonated of counter-Soviet propaganda, for lack of a better way to describe it
The train is obviously loud because in the time the metro was built it was alredy realy old.
unfortunately, these blue trains are no longer in service, BUT the BKV is now repairing leftover Ev, EvA and Ev3s and there will be nostalgia rides
Oh no. So sad. We can always go to Khiv Ukraine where they have these
@@swissclimber1 That is when it becomes safe there and at this point who knows how long it'll take.
Please help from where I can get subway stations exit numbers information example A, B or 1, 2 etc.
There are signs all over the ceilings in the subway
You forgot the most important thing about the yellow line, the Millennium train: it is the third oldest metro in the world and the oldest in Hungary.
I put another video on YT I did ride this and highlight it in my video. That's the one that goes to the outdoor thermal baths?
There are some thermal baths in Budapest. But I guess you mean the Széchenyi thermal baths next to the park, don't you? Yes, this one is next to the Millennium train.
CCCP... sovjet steel...
Love Those metro station
Yup. I would love to explore all the old stations in Budapest
I lived in hungry for five years from 1986 to 1991 and I use all their transportation they are awesome
:sigh: I miss metro trains with interior incadescent lighting.. .. .. ..
i wonder why the company moved the old trains to the 2 line and left them to collect graffti and rust and no other use
A few observations with no detailed knowledge of the actual situation: 1) They want to make Budapest a more modern city. Soviet subway system would not assist this image. 2) Maintenance of old cars can get $$$ 3) It's loud 4) show that Hungary is no longer Communist 5) Subsidies of EU Money to buy 'Western Goods'. 6) Government bureaucrats who have to be seen as doing something 7) they want modern toys because they break down more
I'm honestly sad they upgraded them the old ones like this is unbeatable
Yes - some things get worse with change. I wonder if they increased the ticket charges
About escalator You should go to Kiev and saw an felt Kiev metro system ;)
thank you. i have every intention to go to Kiev. I'd love to take a train to Odessa too!
About 35 seconds in... the map looks kinda similar to the Metro Subway map in Washington.
Haha, good eye
Try metro/subway in Prague. :-)
Лучше в москве.
Thank you for posting this, its great to be able to see it. Also, I like your comments . "Sounds like farting" . Hehe
Haha, Yea that's what it sounded like
@@swissclimber1 It did. Haha
4:53 in... No kiddin'!
u should listen to the jubilee line train in london and the metro trains in Lisbon
What would I hear?
Ежи)))
2:33 things getting interesting
Please let me know what is interesting. I can't figure it out....Please advise.
@@swissclimber1 you see the couple in front of you? They are 😗
The new Alstom train is on the red line, not on the blue! At Nyugati Pályaudvar, Alstom mustn't come, because the tunnel is so small for those new cars
Yes but who made that new train on the blue line then!??
Metrovagonmas
4:50 How to be louder???
Why they don't have turnstiles like on the NYC Subway?
Because they use people to check In/Out
0:30 wrong picture, it was just the plans but the real green line much shorter in reality
Really? Oh now I see - it's a dashed line meaning it's in planning
Iove from pest
Thanks. Buda - Pest, the only city with 1 city name but 2 sides each with a different name. Interesting
Why do you have to criticize instead of just telling us what this subway/metro has, like "its clean & there is a lot of light" (stop here) dont go, "unlike the one in NYC or Mexico City or London" & then talk down on them! You are doing something cultural here so learn to stick to it & dont start controversies or division... cheers from Germany
Sattler London’s is clean tho
I'm from Hungary
Now the cars are white, renovated, also the stations. :)
None of the cars were renovated. They're new
I will miss the 1980's style stations.
@@swissclimber1 Some of the '80's style stations still exist yet
There are some mistakes in this video. Lots of tourist believe that we ride on communists metro cars. Yes, we did til 2012, but the government is changing this metro cars years by years. The first modern Alstom metro car arrived in 2012 to metro line 2 and for now they changed the cars also on metro line 3. The other mistake they believe in that metro line 1 is built in 1896. Yes, it's true, but they rebuilt it in 1973 and these cars and stations are just 45 years old :) -- Citizen
Thanks. Wait those blue cars that look like from Communist Times you think are not from those times? Impossible! I was just on the cars in 2017. I am confident in my other videos for Line 1 I don't state that the cars are from the 1890's. I wouldn't ride those for sure!
Yes, the blue one is from the Communist times. I agree, but I wrote, they are changing it years by years. At the end of this year, they will change all blue cars on the line 3 for new cars. 95% of this cars are new now. Check out: czcams.com/video/WVnzHXOo-_g/video.html
:)
NO!!! I love the old Commie Blue cars. Keep them
Actually the first Alstom cars arrived back in 2009
I live in Budapest :-)
Ria, ria, hun-ga-ria!
"Alstholm" xDDD It's Alstom dude.
Thanks. Do you work for them?
Oh hell no, haha. I just know them, because obviously, you know they are around me, I'm interested in machines and stuff.
Actually, originally they were Alsthom, with the H: Alsace-Thomson
They wanted to build a line to the airport, but this project is failed.
Haha, the government is afraid of the Taxi Mafia!
Some of the Asian looking people actually the native Hungarians. Very attractive.
Are you referring to the lady in 5:13?
Nothing wrong with Asians: czcams.com/video/AOCTSnk9tCQ/video.html
The first train look like soviet trains.and Azerbaijan use this trains.
They were Soviet cars - but not sure exactly what part of USSR they were made or the Eastern Block
You should do a newer film. Nearly all stations are modernized, and we no longer have soviet metro cars. They have been replaced by new cars. M4 is all automatic with no driver or crew on board. AND there has NEVER! been wooden escalators. LOL u are fooled EASILY :) It's only decor as in most cars of today ;)
Oh no but I liked the old Soviet metro calls. What are you saying that inside the train that was not wood !? OMG if it is not wood they sure fooled me
The M3 consist of new Russian cars though
"metro in budapest is clean" yes, but actually no :D
Well I felt it was clean.
Nice. But in my city metro is more beautyful.
Where are you from?
I love Hungary.
I love eastern Europe
I love Viktor Orban.
Yes Yes Yes
Eastern European is your mother!
I'm hungarian so
I'm eastern european
and I hate orban.
please don't enter into our political situation because you don"t know what is orban what makes he and we don't need your enthusiasm.
