      Owning a Leica is the dream! But the high price is more than just money... for me it's the opportunity cost of a plane ticket and time... lots and lots of time on location somewhere, taking photos, becoming better. It could mean the difference between affording a photo workshop or not. There are so many considerations beyond just the cameras and lenses themselves. For me, for now.. my Leica system is Fuji ;-)

    Just bought an M240 as I was an M6 shooter back in the day. I have a Leica Q. It’s so compact, easy to use and the image quality is fantastic. I just don’t like 28mm as my go to lens. So I’m selling my Q and planning to buy a CL. I also already have some Sigma L mount lenses.

    Great video, as usual. Thanks. I (regretfully) sold my M240 and three Zeiss lenses because my aging eyes could no longer do all that well with manual rangefinder focusing. Wish I had kept the lenses. I now shoot with the original Leica Q, Q2 Monochrom and CL for my "system" camera. I'm very happy with all of these.

    • @AskMOTT
      @AskMOTT  Pƙed 2 lety +1

      That's a great setup Fran, the Q is so solid and such great value as crazy as thought sounds to many. I'm considering either an SL2-S for video or a Leica monochrome. How do you like the Monochrome?

    • @frand6822
      @frand6822 Pƙed 2 lety +3

      @@AskMOTT , buying the Q2 Monochrome was a real gamble. I thought that it was far more practical to sell my Q and get the Q2 and to just keep converting images to B&W, but I also knew that though I didn't want to start shooting film again, I wanted a B&W experience like walking down the street with only Tri-x in my camera. Now that I have it, no regrets. When I go shoot with it, I bring no other camera with me. I love the limitation. As for the files, my experience is that they are just as advertised - incredible luminance range and wonderful higher ISO rendition. Yeah, I really like it.

    I needed this video. I have the M10 and Q2 today, and right now the M10 went down to Wetzlar for service
and Leica sent me the SL2-S with a 24-90 lens as a loaner meanwhile. I start to like the SL2-S, but it’s a monster
 I really like using it with my M-lenses, but I somehow feel that they belong on a M. Also, something you mention that makes a ton of sense for me is that using the SL2-S is a commitment to take photos, with the other two
I can just throw it down my messenger bag.
    Only had the SL2-S for a couple of days so maybe I will get used to the weight. We will see..

    The original Q is my all time favorite camera and I’ve used a lot of cameras in many different formats. I owned a few M film & digital bodies, but once I tried the Q I was in love. The M is great if as a photographer one is still and are waiting for the subject to enter the frame or are composing carefully. But as someone who moves a lot while shooting moving subjects the Q simplifies the shooting process.

    Just secured my first Leica, a Q2 007 edition. Expensive? Of course, but I have two special reasons for purchase. Firstly, Goldfinger was the first film that my mother took me to see in town. Went by double decker bus. Secondly, my mobile phone number ends in 007. Then there's the disease I have. Nothing serious. More an addiction. Don't panic, it is only photography and nice gear. Don't have too many premium products, most being middle of the range, but I'm at a stage where aesthetics and quality 'feel' are far more important to me than money [within reason].

    I used the Leica M system off and on for years as a newspaper photographers in Pensacola, Florida. However, the wide ranging demands of press work demanded most of my work be done with SLR cameras. But, in the few years before I retired the demand to shoot video for online and stills, almost always at the same time, pushed me to try and use the Leica V-Lux 114, a 25-400mm superzoom camera. I know the 114 is to Leica what the 914 was to a lot of Porsche fans but it's a very versatile camera, especially for travel. It never let me down and deserves some recognition.

    All of them? 😊 I’m lucky enough to have all three and each serves a different purpose. Q for casual, quick point-and-shoot activities. M-D Typ 262 for street shooting and is pure joy to use, for many of the reasons why you prefer M10-D. SL2-S for serious, fast moving situations, plus nailing focus and slower shooting with M lenses. The only SL lens I have is the 24-90, which is spectacular. I had a couple SL primes, but found them too large for what they are, and I prefer adapting M lenses instead (35 Cron, 50 Lux).
    I do not shoot professionally. All of my shots are for personal use. Going off my IG posts the M-D gets the majority of use.

    Nice episode. Fortunate to have all three. Not a pro. The SL2-S is my fav. Slap on a Voigtlander 35mm f2 or a summicron 35 or an elmarit 28 and it’s the ‘same’ volume as the Q but with interchangeable lens capability. At one point, may change either the Q or the M for another SL2-S. The stabilization and high ISO on the SL2-S makes it a viable platform to use tiny, small aperture lenses without compromising image quality.

      I’ve been kicking back and forth the idea between the sl2s or the m10
it’s a big case of “if I get this one, I don’t get that feature from the other”. The thing that I like on the sl2s is the built in diopter. Wish the m10 had a built in diopter as well. As far as the m10 goes, has has the durability and reliability been for you?

    • @belgiboing
      @belgiboing Pƙed rokem +1

      @@Deetroiter The M10 is durable. Own it for three years now and still looks new after many trips and everyday use. Reliability is ok. The rangefinder is the weak point of the M-system. Had to send it back to Wetzlar once when the rangefinder drifted and the arm that interfaces the lens cam was getting sticky. Leica maintains and adjusts the camera for free (excluding shipping), once a year; but takes between 1-2 months to get it back. You can buy the Visoflex for it to get the diopter. There's still nothing like the M for compactness on a full frame mirrorless. Having said that, if I needed another SL2-S, I would sell the M immediately. To me, the SL2-S is still "the best M", even now that the M11 is out.

The TTL hasn't been as reliable electronically and my tip to anyone buying a film Leica, ancient or modern and expecting to use it for decades is to find one without batteries. A word on value: as a professional fashion photographer I’ve used different brands over a long period of time. Next to Hasselblad, Leica cameras and lenses are easily the best investment. Not only because you feel less need to upgrade, but even when you do, the resale value is great. Once invested in the Leica ecosystem it’s actually less costly than others. You are very right about the Fujifilm X-Pro’s. I’ve had all three models and although they’re good cameras, they only remotely resemble Leica M in looks. The retro-look is nice, but the handling and overall quality is nowhere near an M10. A few years ago we were in Iceland enjoying a day long drizzle. My spouse’s X-Pro3 failed even though the weather sealings, while my M10 had no issue at all. I know this is an n=1 experience, but also during professional use the Fujifilm cameras (I’ve had about 10 of them between 2012 and 2020) gave me frequent issues. Nice cameras, but you get what you pay for

    Shooting Leica M with M-E 240 and several film M cameras. Love the compactness, less the luxury prices. No intention nor need to add or move to the L-system (too bulky, no need for AF or video). The summer of Leica continues. Their marketing department must be working overtime with CZcamsrs. But I will be fair here, I’m pretty sure you’re one of the few who would use Leica and make videos about Leica, just because. Others though, not so much. Since the beginning of June Leica has been all over the CZcams photography world. CZcamsrs who previously had barely mentioned Leica before and had championed the likes Sony, Canon or Fuji all of a sudden mention how much they dig Leica. Again, this comment isn’t to denigrate you or your videos, which are pretty stellar
 I just got triggered by seeing “Leica”, yet again, in a video title.

    The Leica M system was a huge fail and a waste of money for me. If you buy any of the nice lenses like the 75 Noctilux, it blocks half the view finder making it extremely difficult to focus. Yes you can add the Visioflex like I did but then you loose the hot shoe for flash trigger. So no professional portraits with that setup! You’re lucky if you can get half your money back on resale, so I has to get an SL 2 for the 75 Noctilux
