Rescuing A 1940 Ford Coupe From It's 60 Year Slumber

- We recently took a private tour of an upcoming estate sale in Port Royal, PA. The auction has since passed but Matt and Steve were able to document the extraction of a few of the cars. This 1940 Ford was parked in 1964 due to an engine issue. The car appeared super solid when we looked during our preview and hopefully there isn't anything hidden. Matt and Steve get to work moving all the items leaning on the car, and airing up the tires. Thankfully the estate has a machine to help move the car, hopefully it rolls free and gets to see the light of day!!

Seeing those n.o.s. headlight surrounds was amazing. I doubt there are any others in the world still in the FoMoCo paper bags. What a find.

@@chuckb9867 Same here. Must have been low moisture in that barn or they would have pitted a little anyhow. I think a tiny bit of pitting looks more nostalgic. I hate perfect re-crommed bumpers. Got an aftermarket front bumper on my 72 XLT short-bed. Bugs the shit out of me!

W O W!! My first car in 1960 was a 1940 Ford businessmans coupe. It was/still is in our family. It is powered FLAT HEAD as I hope this one will return to? They are a truly great driving car and this one will bring you much fun I am sure. Be safe and thanks for the memory of finding one.
Yes sir I would imagine that this car would make a good driver. I'm a GM fellow but would not mind having a 1940 Ford Deluxe coupe.

In my teens I had a 39 Standard Coupe,mainly because i have loved that shape since i was little kid. One of Fords nicer looking products for sure.

WOW!! What a find. The '40 Ford coupe was one of those "perfect" cars. In and out it's so pleasing. It looks like that one was used for many years with the previous owner adding turn signals back and front and aftermarket back-up lights. The NOS bezels in the trunk are quite a find! Highly desired pieces. I sure hope it's kept as stock as possible. So many would rod it out.

Very cool! The 40 is one of best looking. Have about a dozen 40's in the family stash in various models. 2dr's 4dr's a coupe a convertible a sedan delivery a couple pickups. The coupe is a 60's hot rod.

Great show!!!! That gray colored toolbox in the trunk is an "Official US Navy" storage/tool/equipment box. Surplus sales at Naval Repair Shipyards offered some COOL military stuff to the general public. Perfect container to store the NOS headlight trim!!!!! WHAT A SCORE!!!!!
My 48 Mercury also has a house plug for trailer lights. My Dad said it was what they used to use. Our plugs here in Oz have 3 flat pins

I have a 40 deluxe coupe just like this one. Someone started to make a street rod out of it so I am continuing to finish it as a street rod. I have a 350 chevy zz4 and 400 turbo trans and 9" ford rear. I purchased a custom frame from California with all the goodies. I am still working on it but there is not enough time in the day, if you know what I mean. Hope to see you buy this car and finish it in your way.

I grew up in the seventies building 39 + 40 Fords with my dad we used to have a yard full of cars forties 39 sedans 2 doors 40 Ford pickup truck 👍💜

I always envisioned a 1940 with the hood off and a 7.3 powerstroke turbo hanging out. I think it has nice lines with the hood off.

I sure hope you got this one. That is a rare gem. Whoever got it had to have dropped a truckload of money.... I drove one of these for about a year (until the folks had enough to tell me to sell it) back in the 1960s. It had been hot-rodded by someone who knew his stuff. The car had a 1955 Roadmaster nail head V8 coupled to an early 1950s Mercury 3-speed manual transmission. The clutch assembly and rear were from a heavy duty Ford truck. The suspension setup was dialed in perfectly. The car would hook up and fly off the line. I have a photo showing it pull the front tires off the strip and carry them for about a hundred feet. My best time slip was a 14.85. There were a lot of hot muscle cars that were embarrassed by that old jalopy. The build was not the neatest in the world. The firewall was "modified" with a hatchet to clear the distributor. The front motor mounts were 2-inch angle iron stands with heavy log chains bolted to the motor and the frame to hold it down. She sure was a lot of fun while it lasted. The only problem was the transmission. It would not stand that much power. I scavenged every transmission from every junkyard within a hundred miles. I know I rebuilt it at least nine times, even then, it seldom had all three forward gears at one time. Second was usually the one that grenaded on me. I did drive it home from college with just Reverse and High gears once...lol. Anyway, hopefully, someone will do her right and put her back on the road...
I feel sorry for this old classic and what it's future will inevitably be. Wish it could be fully restored, but.....

When I was in high school (early 60s) there was an elderly lady who drove a grey 40 coupe as a daily driver. All us boys drooled over it as we watched it sprout new dents and dings as the lady’s driving got worse. I went away to college and have no idea what ever happened to the ford.

50 mercury flatmotor perfect for this one i also have 40 ford mandarin maroon
Awesome condition 44 k the original engine is on a stand since 1950
Great grandad installed a new 50 mercury flatmotor with warmer cam headers
He loved the mercury flatmotor he bought in late 19 50 new mercury coupe same mods to the engine drove both cars till 19 61 parked them in the garage fast forward
2022 brought them out of long slumber the 40 has 44k on clock the mercury 27 k
Found pops notes on his cars these two had transmission fluid in both tanks and
Marvel mystery oil in cylinders and oil he would spin engine 4 times a year never started along with other stored cars this stopped in 19 82 9 months before his passing .. the 40 has been on 2 1,000 mile trips 25 k mpg in overdrive original paint

I have a 1942 Ford pickup half ton short box in my garage runs and drives needs a few things I know where one of those are sitting in boardman Oregon it's been sitting there since 1942 guy went off to the second world war and never came back it's been sitting there on blocks ever since his mother left it there sitting in the driveway it's still there last time I looked that old lady has been dead for decades
It doesn't matter what gear it's in with no engine in it. Be sure the parlking brake is released, though.
even black tractor paint on it would be sweet.

Careful when airing up those old tires, mixing old 1960s air with new 2023 air has been known to cause catastrophic implosions and alter the fabric of time.
Id keep that one 100% stock original if it was mine....just to annoy the barb wire & saw blade rat rod guys who butcher up nice old cars that could have been traditional hot rods.
The past tense of drag is dragged....etc.
"Drug" is something else entirely.
